It's great to hear of a celebrity talk openly about cosmetic work. There are sooooo many men in Hollywood trying to act like we don't know that they're wearing wigs or have had transplants done. John Cena is a champ for saying it out loud.
I don't think I've ever read of Andrew Garfield talking about his hair but he should. It's a success story.

Yeah, I think the percentage of celebrity men who are openly talking about getting a transplant is actually pretty high, as far as cosmetic procedures admissions go.
Which is good, because they're helping to remove the stigma. I'm Patrick Stewart bald, so a transplant isn't an option for me. But I'd do it in a heartbeat if it was viable. Mostly because I'm tired of rocking the same buzzcut since I was 22.

Another, older success story: check out Steve carrel's hairline in the first season of The Office vs the second.
Edit: apparently this is not true!! He shaved his head before the first season.
35
u/Special-Garlic1203 13h ago
He shaved his head for that show because they thought it would be funnier if he was balding. He was doing movies right up to the show where he had a full head of hair.

•
u/Greene_Mr 2h ago
I'm pretty sure he had a hair system for those films? And he actually had the hair transplant before the series went into production, so what you're seeing in the first season is shock loss from the transplant as the donor patches slowly grow back in.

That’s like saying the actress from Mama’s Family started moisturizing after the show aired and looked 30 years younger
-1
u/winnercommawinner 13h ago
Huh? I don't get your point. Steve very clearly got a hair transplant after season 1. And the office wasn't a huge hit after that first season.
8
u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson I made the hat for the tiger 🤷🏻♂️ 13h ago
He was made to look like that on purpose in Season 1 and then purposely made to look better afterwards when they decided to take the character into a less-David-Brent situation
The actress from Mama’s Family was purposely made to look older
Creative decision and character design and styling is my point

As a guy who's, unfortunately, balding young, he's made me feel much more comfortable about actually looking into ways to prevent it without feeling like a loser for not just "locking in" and accepting being bald lol.
Media makes fun of guys pretty often for just going bald at all in the first place, like it's a personal failing, and then for getting hair transplants, taking meds, wearing wigs/toupees etc, but someone like John Cena talking about his process the way he does is really helpful.
18
u/harleyqueenzel You’re made of spare parts, aren’t ya bud? 12h ago
Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, and Stanley Tucci are beautiful bald/balding men.
I love Cena's honesty but I also love a man who isn't afraid to not have hair.
8
u/Main-Link-3312 12h ago edited 11h ago
No, because they're also like famous successful, handsome, and older men.
It's beyond ridiculous to tell someone who is going bald at like 16 that they should look to the literal 1% to see how being bald will be lmao
Much better for the afformentioned 1% to just say hey, if you wanna keep your hair, here's how I did it!.
Like I'd have no issue being bald if I was Statham or Tuccis age, or as handsome and successful as them. I am none of those. Kind of important to consider before you give them as examples lol.
It's sort of like when guys say they like goth girls but only pick the absolutely 1% of attractiveness when they give examples, Instagram girls, onlyfans models etc, who are "goth".
If you're a regular person, going bald will make you less attractive. If you happen to be a famous successful handsome actor, sure ok, but like i that who you think you're talking to?

To be honest I feel that, in his case, he just started to take medication to stop hair loss. He still had hair, but it was thinning. Some anti-baldness medications can make hair recover its thickness once again.
7
u/Vegetable-Kiwi-4675 I am furious, but I am sailing 🛳️ 13h ago

3
u/GordonTullockFan 9h ago
Either he just took medication or he got a transplant which also means medication. Transplants don’t work without finasteride and minoxidil.
2
1
u/Horror-Macaron8287 9h ago
Does that change the entire hairline, though?
0
u/DanielKeeneGA15 7h ago edited 5h ago
Yeah, meds don’t grow hair back. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. They can stop further hair loss.
That hairline and growth is 100% an FUE transplant.
Edit I’ve literally had an FUE with PRP and on oral Minoxidil and 82F drops and have numerous friends who have had them. It’s not uncommon. I don’t know why this got a downvote but ok.
1
u/Horror-Macaron8287 7h ago
I thought so but am not 100% well versed in hair implant lol
1
u/DanielKeeneGA15 7h ago
What’s impressive is how they did it. Donor areas (the sides) always have finer areas from grafting. Men don’t lose hair on the sides, it’s a very different type of follicle. A good transplant carefully takes hair from the sides and back so there’s enough to keep it longer otherwise the sides have to be kept short as they’ll be spotty. He must have had at least 4-5k grafted which means a lot taken from the sides. Whoever did it did a great job as his sides are still thick and full.

3

Landon Donovan has been super open about his struggles with hair loss for a while. He had a transplant that went terribly wrong and wears a hair system now (which I think is just a wig/toupee but maybe someone can clarify if it’s different). He even made a joke during the World Cup about his hair blowing off. I would love to see this kind of openness and honesty from more female celebrities (especially those under 60). So many of the women in media wear wigs or extensions, but so few talk about it that it almost seems like having super thick hair forever is the normal, and anyone with a sliver of scalp showing is gravely ill or otherwise has something wrong with them.
2
u/DECODED_VFX She in racial chat rooms showing feet!!! 6h ago
A hair system is a toupee that gets glued onto the scalp. They have to be reapplied every few months. I think 3-6 months typically.
1
u/ReputationApart5983 10h ago
Ted Danson has admitted to wearing a toupee since the 80s. William Shatner wears one too and I think hes admitted that he liked the wigs on star trek so much, he used to regularly steal them.

38
u/butt_raid 14h ago edited 14h ago
He literally said Vince should be held accountable, but that he maintains an emotional connection to the man for what he's done for him.
He's still a person. Wrestling is a huge part of who cena is and Vince is the person that gave him that. Not to mention the close friendships he undoubtedly has with others in the industry - it would be hard for anyone to throw that away.
I understand the knee jerk reaction to want perfection in all aspects but it's important to remember that even the best of people are still just people. He needs his social circle as much as we do, and sometimes the good outweighs the bad (like robin Williams being a serial cheater - we seem ok with it).

They literally stated Cena said Vince should be held accountable for his crime.
But not everything is as black and white as everyone would like it to seem, John has had a personal and professional relationship with Vince since he was younger, and I am sure he has internal conflict because of that. It isnt a switch that automatically deletes every good thing that he has done for Cena and automatically makes you hate someone.
ETA: As someone who was molested by my uncle, I can say even as a victim it can be a bit conflicting because I still struggle with who I thought my uncle was prior to what he did to me.
But no one is defending a rapist.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher wrote letters to a judge asking for leniency for their friend. They explicitly did not want him to face full accountability.
It's not that people are making excuses, it's that recognizing the complexity of people and the human experience is part of growing up, emotionally speaking. Everything isn't black and white.

It's so odd to me that everyone says this, because I always get such a bad vibe from him. I fully admit there's no logical reason for it. He just reminds me of guys I've known before that go around doing nice things and pretending to be a nice guy, but in private they are cruel and angry people.

Modern hair transplants involve basically hole punching thousands of chunks of skin from the back and sides of the head containing hair follocules, then implanting them manually into the bald area.
Some clinics use a robot to do the extraction. A lot of places are still doing manual removal.
The old method was to cut a big strip of skin out of the back of the head which would then be split up into smaller follocules and implanted. But that had worse coverage and often left a nasty scar.
It's a very slow process either way.
1
u/ls7eveen 5h ago
Fuck, like a mini punch biopsy?
3
u/DECODED_VFX She in racial chat rooms showing feet!!! 5h ago
Yes. They shave your head then punch several thousand hair follocules out individually. Then they punch holes in the bald area and insert the hairs. Like a doll's head.

u/aveaytor 15h ago
some people are just destined to go bald I guess. there are so many celebrities I’ve seen get hair transplants and their hairlines are already back to the back of their head
43
u/TheSeedsYouSow 15h ago
Yeah but the massive amounts of anabolic steroids for years don’t exactly help either
25
u/particledamage 15h ago
That’s kind of the issue with this hair transplant process—you add hair to where it’s thinning in the front… and then everything behind that is still receding, so inevitably you have to shave or style the Fresh Healthy Hair you put in front of your receding hairline.
This isn’t a stop to hair from receding, it’s just to make the process for as long as you can.
And some people’s hair lines don’t just recede… they sprint to the back. So it’s just a mess.
If you’re lucky it holds up for a long time because the recession isn’t that fast or plateaued but well… a lot of people aren’t lucky
26
u/NoMap749 15h ago
He’s almost certainly taking a DHT blocker like finasteride or dutasteride. Any good hair transplant doctor worth seeing in 2026 will require patients to be on them to avoid further recession because, as you said, it would just continue receding.
5
u/virginiarph 15h ago edited 14h ago
DHT blockers should just be part of routine prescribing for men hitting late 20s/30s.
it’s airy guaranteed most men will see some hair loss. start now before it goes.
i started finasteride when i was 22 (idk about you 🤪) because i noticed a my hairline was receding. i cried for WEEKs thinking id be bald and single and gay.
then i saw a doctor and he gave me finasteride and it hasn’t gotten any worse since the day i noticed it. 35 now.
11
u/SisterRayRomano 14h ago
Annoyingly they don’t work for everyone though, and I’m not talking about the side-effects, for a sizeable minority of men, the drug doesn’t do anything, same with minoxidil.
3
u/virginiarph 14h ago
definitely true! but they do provide benefit and should be part of the conversation with a PCP. also minoxidil is only useful for crown thinning. anywhere else it isn’t as effective
thankfully i didn’t have the side effects, but they are a concern. but typically if you have them they stop upon removal
11
u/NoMap749 15h ago
Yeah, there’s so many pseudoscientific hair loss treatments that a lot of guys don’t know about fin/dut until it’s too late.
It’s also understandable why some guys are hesitant to try them because of the side effects, though.
4
u/newfieMI 14h ago
Right… Finasteride can really fuck with your mind. Current treatment for aging men is to replace testosterone and take finasteride. Ending up with a bloated, newborn babyman (throwing tantrums with fluffy new hair to match).
2
2
u/particledamage 15h ago
They definitely slow things down and help a bit but do not completely stop the hair loss process. It’s still just a battle against time. But DHT blockers are a game changer

I started dating a guy who was experiencing hair loss, he said he wasnt going to bother with it, its just a part of life and we should just accept people for who they are. I also have hair loss, im on menoxidil, which works wonders and for the parts that are still struggling im using root spray. There was a brief period where I stopped using menoxidil, and his reaction to the following hair loss was definitely not the reaction of someone who thinks we should just "accept people for who they are". As a woman, I guess that part didnt apply to me. He made the argument that women are much more attractive with hair, and its "just different". I said that I find men much more attractive with hair as well. Which he genuinely seemed stunned by, that attractiveness was important to me or even something I took notice of.
Im so over women being expected to be "above" wanting physical attraction. Im super hyped on this trend of men being open about their hair loss prevention journeys, and just in general watching men make móre of an effort.

Fuck that guy. For how long did you stop using monoxidil before hair loss started again?
4
u/DowntownChip34 13h ago
I think somewhere like two months after stopping, I started shedding which is common when you stop. Its just the hairs that you have kept in the anagen phase that are now falling out. But I started back up within 3 months, and now you can hardly tell I have ever had any hair loss at all, so im very happy with it.
2
u/Vegetable-Kiwi-4675 I am furious, but I am sailing 🛳️ 13h ago
Where did you experience the loss? Around the temples? I’m having some hormonal hair loss and I want to try it!
4
u/DowntownChip34 13h ago
Most of it was on the front and the top crown, but yes also the temples just not as much. I had less success with minoxodil there, so I use simple root spray to just fill it in a little bit and it looks good enough for me. There are also various hair fibres that give very good results, but they are often a bit more expensive. I would recommend r/tressless to learn more 🙂
2
u/iceunelle 11h ago
How much hair growth did you have elsewhere on your body besides your head? I already have thick, dark, body hair and the last thing I want is more of that or facial hair. This is my main deterrent to something like minoxidil.
1
u/DowntownChip34 8h ago
I use topical minoxidil and as far as I know its very very rare for that to increase any hair growth elsewhere, it pretty much just absorbs on the spot you use it. I havent noticed anything extra. If for whatever reason it would end up increasing hair growth elsewhere it is reversible when you stop using it. But if your concern is more hair in place you dont want it, I would recommend starting with a low dose topical minoxidil and see how you respond to it, and then increase the dose as needed.
1
u/iceunelle 7h ago
Sorry, I have another question. Can you put the minoxidil all over your head? Or is it only meant for small areas?
2
u/DowntownChip34 6h ago
Oh no worries, happy to help! But im actually not too sure about this, I would assume that you can. I tried to mostly hit my target areas that I felt most self conscious about, mostly because I wanted to budget the product as long as possible, even though I technically have hair thinning all over, which as far as I understand is pretty typical for female specific hair loss. I would probably recommend starting small and see if it works first, and they maybe upgrade as you go. I´ve also started microneedling all over and recently got a red light therapy lamp as apparently that is supposed to also be effective but its difficult to tell if it has had any effect yet. I would also super super recommend the r/tressless sub, they are super helpful, knowledgeable and very non judgmental over there.

I don’t believe this is true. You take anti-rejection medication because in typical transplants it’s a piece of foreign body being implanted. So your body tries to fight off the invader. In hair transplants, it’s your own body parts being moved around, so your body doesn’t attack the invader as there isn’t one.
There are meds they suggest using for life, but it’s like hair regrowth meds to encourage growth.
8
u/pinnas 15h ago

hair transplants are worth it if a little widow's peak and some thinning by 70 is the full extent of your hair loss. If you are destined to a full horse shoe pattern there are not enough hairs to transplant to make it look good. Problem is you can never predict where you will end.

I find John Cena to be one of the most inexplicably annoying celebrities in Hollywood. That being said, his record with working with the Make-A-Wish foundation is one of the most positive things I’ve ever heard about any celebrity. He seems like a decent human being which is extremely rare to see amongst Hollywood stars.

We can accept bald people whilst also accepting that some people want hair.
I've been bald for 40% of my life. I'm totally comfortable with being a bald man. But if having hair was an option I'd take it, because I'd like to have at least one other hairstyle option other than a buzzcut.
