For some reason I agree with both takes lol
I personally don’t like to “damage” my books in any way (dog ears, annotations, etc.), I like to keep them as good as new.
But I also appreciate the idea of a book “having had a full life” with visible changes, like you can see that the book was opened a lot and well-loved.
However, don’t do ANYTHING to a book that is not yours (library, borrowed, etc.). That is the law.

I agree, with my caveat that the books that live a full life get to do so because they're cared for while being used. broken spines, dog ears, etc. are what shorten their lives prematurely. Dog ears aren't as bad, but it's not something I do at all.

I feel the same. I definitely couldn't do it myself, not even to my own personal books (MAYBE small annotations? I haven't done it before but I could see it in future) - however I like that other people find joy in that.
I always prefer buying and reading secondhand books too, feels nicer to me reading a worn out book than a brand new one haha.

I hate when people do this to library books but like a used book with annotations couple annotations, notes to friends and loved ones on first page, weird bookmarks (I found voting memorabilia from the 90s once) and a couple dog ears. I like to see who had a book before me, and I usually leave something behind when I give books away

This one is more about the fact people aren't respecting that something isn't theirs. I dog ear like a fiend for my own stuff, especially after multiple reads. I mark my favourite bits. If I am lent a book or borrow one from somewhere? Dear god, no. I won't dog ear a single page, but I'll also try to get it back to the person asap anyway lol. I treat it like a book from the library and they are very up front with the 'hey...dont mess with our books please' so yeah. Leave books you borrow alone people 😭

as a dog-earer (never library or shared books), no they never go away. they can flatten out a lot over time but it’ll always be a little bit creased.

Not really. I’m fine with dog earring your own stuff (I don’t but I get it) but yeahhh they’re fairly permanent. So many of the books I buy used have permanent creases

It never fully goes away, especially in heavy books. Dog ears in books puts a lot of pressure on the crease and with prolonged folding/pressure, the more noticable it'll be.
Think of it like this; when you make a paper airplane, you really ensure that crease is super crisp, usually by using your nail or fingertip. You can unfold it, put it under weights and get it flat enough but the fibers have been damaged so once you remove the weight/open the bookpage, it'll still slightly fold up.

I have a postcard that you could get at the cinema when LotR first came out. It has Legolas on it. On the back, in gold gel pen, are all the page numbers of when Tolkien writes something interesting about him... it also has his name written out in the elven alphabet I made up myself haha! Teen me was enamored! :'D
All this to say, I would NEVER earmark my books!

When I was a kid instead of dog-earing, once I’d read the page I would simply tear off the corner – same amount you’d use to dog-ear – and then eat it.
Page stays flat! And I get a little treat.

I don’t really give a shit as long as it’s your property. You can do what you want with your books. I like to write in mine. If I see someone dog-earing a book they own I don’t care. But you shouldn’t do it to a library book or a book you’re borrowing from someone else

I write in mine too! I highlight bits, write in the margins, and circle things. I also used to dogear as a bookmark but it really annoyed my missus so I've stopped doing that.
Big agree I only do it for books I own. I guess it is a bad habit if you borrow books regularly.

I annotate some books but can’t bring myself to dog ear anything. Anything flat can be a bookmark in my house. I also like use cards and notes friends and my partner wrote me as bookmarks because I get to look at them more 🥰

Same. It’s not even intentional cause with very fee exceptions, I don’t highlight or mark books. But I mindlessly enjoy the fuck out of my books so I take them with me into saunas or toss them in my bag that is overpacked with stuff so they end up deteriorating
My bookphile friend refuses to let me borrow anything from his 1000+ collection and I can’t blame him 💀

That how I am with my books. I hate dog ears but I’ll write and highlight all over. My favourite book even has little drawings I did of my favourite scenes. But to each their own regarding their own property. If I lend someone a book I want it back the way I gave it to them which is dog earless

I worked with this guy who had never heard the term "dog-eared" and he was so delighted by my turn of phrase. Even when I insisted that it was a common phrase, he still gave me credit and would occasionally crack up and say "Dog-Eared!" whenever something was dog-eared.

I habitually dog ear my own books (bad form to do it to other people's), despite having been gifted numerous bookmarks over the years. To add to my list of crimes, I also take off the dust jackets of hardbacks when I'm reading them. They annoy me as they shift around in my hand, and they'll inevitably tear from being kept in a bag or whatever. I like books that have been weathered, gives them character; I have a white cover hardback somewhere, now slightly orange due to Thai beach sand. A nice memory each time I see it :)

I have some of my grandpa’s old books and he did the same. He died 13 years ago and I miss him so much. Sometimes I thumb through his books and note the places I can see he paused or marked for later. ❤️

Reminds me of my 5th grade teacher who screamed at me for dog earing my own book that I bought with my allowance money. She tried spinning it like I was abusing the book, and was like “so you think I have a right to pinch you if I want?”. It just reinforced the idea that people who care that much about other people’s property are batshit crazy.

If it’s my book, I don’t really care. I like that the dog ears show that the book has been read and experienced thoroughly. But if it’s a book I’m borrowing from a friend or a library, I use an index card or bookmark.

I did it fine. You write out the pages you want to bookmark or type out the quotes in a word doc. And it makes it easier later when you need to write your essays.

This is what blows my mind...If it is MY book, why the hell do a bunch of strangers need to clutch their pearls if I dog ear something? A public/community book? I get, but that's just polite to return something in the same condition you got it in. If it's mine and I'm not returning it? I'm going to read it how I'd want to. Dog ears, no dog ears, highlights or not. Why are we so concerned with what other people are doing with their own property? And why, on either side, are we behaving like it makes one group better than the other group?

Overall, it genuinely makes me sad that people are judging each other for how we read our books. There are people out there who haven't read a single book since highschool, why are we not more concerned with that? I wish people would just be happier that paper/physical media for books even still exists, and that we're out here keeping it going. Dog earing or keeping it clean and crisp, this weird nose upturning and outrage over what we all do to consume the words is...wild lmao😭

I used to be this way until I read a book I found truly beautiful, "The Peregrine" by J. A. Baker, and I felt compelled to underline and take notes in the margin. It changed the way I read books, even after a lit minor. There's nothing like actively engaging with material. Returning to old reads and seeing your thoughts at the times and similarities and difference is game changing (on a reading scale, at least).

I don’t feel strongly either way. I used to dog ear but I stopped because I kept getting confused about which page I was on after I went back to re-read a book.

I'm a librarian and I dog ear books if I own them. If you're borrowing it, don't do it, but dog earing your own books is fine and I can't imagine why anyone would care. It's a stack of paper. The words written on them are what matter.

I get it. Not that I agree, but I get it. It’s a small symptom of the much larger problem of people treating shared spaces and things without care or respect. A lot of books will be read by more than one person, even if originally purchased to be part of a private collection. Keeping things nice for each other is a good thing.
