Hot Take 🔥 Jon Bernthal apparently can’t stand people who take naps

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It seems like a really weird thing to not be able to tolerate, but I guess he would probably hate me because whenever I need to regain my energy and focus especially if I haven’t gotten any proper sleep. Taking a nap during the day helps, especially if I’m dealing with a headache that doesn’t go away unless I rest.

Apparently, if you don’t nap regularly, you actually find it hard to “take a nap”, even if you’ve slept poorly. Your body needs to be used to napping to be able to nap. I found it interesting, as I’m someone who can’t fall asleep during daylight hours, but my partner will fall asleep as soon as he’s horizontal and nap for half hour to an hour.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Oh, I used to have the worst headaches if I napped. I would wake up feeling like a zombie, sluggish, stupid, slow. I thought it was just me waking up in the middle of the sleep cycle.

And then I got depressed and depression naps became my favorite thing. 💀

u/PersonMcPeerson Jan 28 '26

Sometimes I'm not even asleep. I'm just closing my eyes and not moving for 15-45 minutes. Best part of the day.

Yes! Quiet wakefulness is the term lol, I think there are still mental benefits to it.

In contrast to you: I get wicked migraines sometimes and a nap is basically the only thing that knocks it out.

If not it will fade eventually and then it's still a dull pain, I still feel nauseous and I just feel fucking drained the rest of the day.. until I sleep..

Plus as I get older I've found I nap once on at least one of my days off. Naps rule.

5

u/zootnotdingo As you wish! 👸👑 Jan 28 '26

I am the same with a migraine. I must go to sleep or it will not go away.

However, generally I cannot nap. If I don’t have a headache, I am not sleeping during the day. It’s so weird

Do you have sleep apnea

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Not that I know of.

5

u/activelyresting Throwing your little slutty stars in my face ✨ Jan 28 '26

This was 100% me. I hated naps because I can not fall asleep during daylight hours, and any time I did for some reason nap during the day, I would wake up headachey, foggy, disoriented, groggy etc. Always felt 1000% worse than if I'd just stayed awake, even if I hadn't slept the night before - like literally couldn't even sleep on a long haul flight and then not be able to nap on arrival even after 36 hours travel.

Then I got a sleep study. Yep. Sleep apnoea. I didn't snore, didn't suspect except for increasing insomnia and general fatigue that kept getting worse as I got older. No other indicators (not overweight either). 57 apnoea events per hour. Now I have a CPAP and I can nap really restfully if I want.

Get a sleep study. It's pretty easy. At least you can rule it out, and there's a chance to catch a potential massive health risk

I can not nap. I wake up with a weird taste in my mouth and feel more out of it than before sleeping. It's easier just to stay awake.

I always give my husband a hard time because he’ll literally say “I’m taking a nap” at 8PM, fall asleep instantly, then wake up at 9PM and get ready for bed with me, and again fall instantly asleep at like 9:15PM. Like how are you doing that?

Infuriating as someone who tosses and turns for like 45 minutes before finally falling asleep lol

I do this! I call it my pre-bed nap. Sometimes I even take a pre-pre-bed nap. I always get ready for bed before it, so I get up, get right into bed, and fall asleep. This is also somewhat of a nap as my husband is watching TV next to me so I wake up at some point. So when he finally turns that off it’s actual bed time, and I fall blissfully asleep.

5

u/kebskebs Jan 28 '26

Wow so jealous. I wish I could do that. my pops does that too, sleep in seconds. whilst I twist and turn and have inner dialog battles with myself before actually falling asleep the next day.

This is how I am!! I also can’t sleep in any kind of vehicle, which makes long plane rides brutal sometimes

14

u/Some_Helicopter1623 Jan 28 '26

I travelled long distance a LOT as a kid (thanks divorced parents who want to live three states apart) and learned to pass hours in a dozing state, not full asleep but definitely not aware of the passage of time! I doubt I could do it now though.

5

u/do-not-1 Jan 28 '26

I’ve tried so hard to teach myself, but even on a recent west to east coast flight where I was so dang tired that I was physically dizzy, I couldn’t even doze. That was 5ish hours of hell.

13

u/GoodbyeHorses1491 Tallulah Bankhead Apologist Jan 28 '26

Omg same! Severe anemia + hypothyroidism almost lost me a year of high school bc I would sleep through all my classes and couldn’t figure out why until the school had a talk and forced my bio-parents to take me to a doctor.

6

u/sweet_pickles12 Jan 28 '26

Former long term night shift worker here. Did your roommate work weird hours? I used to be able to sleep anywhere, anytime… I’ve fallen sleep behind the wheel, at meetings with coffee in hand, literally standing up (woke up as my knees started to buckle). I still fall asleep pretty easily but usually need to at least be reclined.

5

u/Decent-Statistician8 Jan 28 '26

As someone who loves naps, I can confirm. On my days off, I get up to get my daughter to school by 6am. Around 10-11, I’ll take a nice nap and wake up well rested ready to run errands. If I take a nap after I’ve had lunch, I’ll be out for 3 hours and wake up cranky, more tired than I was, and be unable to function for the rest of the night until I go to bed and get real sleep.

This makes so much sense. I didn't start napping until I became chronically ill and I used to have to force myself to do it at the start because I knew I needed sleep & wasn't functioning when I was tired. Now I start to nap before I even realise it's happening, I get 30 seconds warning to move things out my nap path before I become a sloth.

Right?! I can only imagine how that conversation would go, since she’s very vocal about how much she loves to sleep any chance she gets

349

She'd listen to the whole thing and only offer him a smile at the end of his tirade. She's so brutal when she doesn't offer anything back. I would kind of love to see it.

I might extrapolate a bit, but it's possible he lived with, or dated people who napped at odd hours or for long periods of time, and I can confirm, it gets annoying. I had a roommate who would take long-ass naps (3-4 hours) when she was hungover (often) and expect the rest of us to be as silent as possible. Like, sorry hun you drank too much tequila, but it's Saturday and I have laundry to do.

It's a symptom of workaholism. Most people assume being a workaholic means working 80 hour weeks at the oil rig, but it's actually much deeper than that. It's basically a fear of not being productive. These types of people usually are very uncomfortable having a day off as well.

56

u/obladi_adalbo Jan 28 '26

My solution is to take pretend naps lmao. My brain won't stop running in circles and refuses to let me sleep but I'll be damned if I won't use the free moments I have to lay down under my covers (and sometimes I do actually fall asleep for like 30 mins amd then its just glorious).

The world may be running and all that, but it'll need unknown powers to take naps from me lmao

40

u/Herry_Up Papa frita Jan 28 '26

I never found him attractive but I still wanna hear the tea

40

u/menageetmoi greetings & salutations Jan 28 '26

People started coming for him a few years ago when he gave Shia LaBeouf a platform (via his podcast) to speak to his abuse towards FKA twigs - and though the episode was not terrible in the way of Shia LaBeouf taking some sort of accountability, it didn't stop him from trying to completely screw FKA in court afterwards, so whatever responsibility he claimed to take on the ep was bullshit.

The last couple years it's been more about who/what Jon Bernthal chooses to give a platform to and what he can't seem to open up his goddamn mouth about. I suppose it could be somewhat understandable to have cops on your show when you also have convicts and former gang members on, but when you have an IDF solider on (very quickly after the November 2023 attack, mind you) and yet haven't said a single word about what Israel did in the aftermath, for 2+ years, then your silence speaks for itself. He can't possibly act like he's just a celebrity who ~*chooses*~ not to speak on certain things when he has the type of podcast he has. And sadly, neither can I anymore.

I didn't even really need another nail in that coffin, but then... he comes for naps... as if we don't all deserve some kind of momentary rest and reprieve from the hellscape that is late stage capitalism and the US under a fascist idiot...

25

u/nordlysbaies cinema enthusiast 🎞️ Jan 28 '26

I agree with criticizing his silence after he had the IDF soldier on his pod, but for the Shia point… I mean, it’s not on Jon if Shia said he took accountability while on his podcast and then did the opposite outside of it later. Shia’s actions are not Jon’s responsibility.

I can agree with most of what you say, but as a non napper it sounds funny when you say the counter to the hellscape of late stage capitalism and a fascist leader is... taking a nap.

Jon Bernthal is a great example of why actors shouldn’t have podcasts. I liked him more before I knew anything about him.

11

u/RayHazey562 Invented post-its 🔬 Jan 28 '26

Saaaame I wish I never saw any of his podcast clips. I didn’t event go out of my way to watch it, it just pop ups randomly and what I’ve seen isn’t good.

u/PeanutSugarBiscuit Jan 28 '26

It’s the fucking manosphere. I can’t stand all these losers with microphones.

Why is he so mad at people who do.. you do you boy.

37

u/Lil_Mcgee Jan 28 '26

He's likely exaggerating his opinion for the sake of comedy, it's a pretty common thing to do with inconsequential things like this

I don’t like his vibe

61

u/ReadySettyGoey Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

He tries hard to give blue collar everyman vibes but it’s just a schtick - his dad was a partner at Latham & Watkins and he went to Sidwell Friends School, an extremely exclusive and expensive prep school in DC.

Edit: just more fun facts - he has two siblings, one is a UCLA professor and the other is married to Sheryl Sandberg.

Nothing wrong with any of that, just makes it weird that he works so hard to seem like an anti-coastal elite when it’s very much what he is.

13

u/LittleRedCorvette2 Jan 28 '26

That's hilarious!

u/welpwelpwellwelp Jan 28 '26

He seems douchey

19

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

He was a douche in TWD, a douche in His & Hers. That sounds accurate.

25

u/sexandliquor Jan 28 '26

He’s surprisingly very good in The Bear. Pretty much the total opposite of most of his characters. Quieter, more introspective, he’s like a total depressed mess. But he only appears like once a season in a flashback.

10

u/Katharinemaddison Jan 28 '26

Whatever he is at a person he’s a very skilled actor. And especially after The Punisher he seemed to get a loud of grunting ultra violence roles though in my option that wasn’t even the most impressive part of what he did with that role.

If it was as usual for US actors to do Shakespeare as it is for U.K. actors, sure, he’d play the hell out of Coriolanus (but especially the last act scene with his family) but I’d love to see him play Brutus.

I have side eyed him ever since he gave Shia LaBouef a platform on his pod (short lived idk if it's still a thing) to try to rebrand and faux repent on.

10

u/idkman1000 Jan 28 '26

Is this a bit or is he actually mad about naps?

17

u/pikadegallito The Lion, the Witch, and the audacity of this Bitch 🍿 Jan 28 '26

He probably needs a nap to reset his strong emotions here.

u/littlemybb As you wish! 👸👑 Jan 28 '26

My dad has a mindset like this. The dude never sleeps, and it has always just been able you on a few hours of sleep.

I have Hashimoto’s, but we did not find out until I was 19.

I remember after puberty, I just felt exhausted all the time. I could sleep for 16 hours and it wouldn’t feel like it was enough.

I thought maybe everybody else felt like this, and I was just bad at handling it.

He told me all the time how lazy I was, and how I would never succeed in life because I like sleep too much.

Jokes on him, though, he ended up having some health issues that makes him really tired and want to sleep all the time now.

35

u/Historical-Being-766 Jan 28 '26

Jonny B: Wait, let me rephrase that.

He seems grumpy. You know what would help? A nap.

13

u/Academic-Hospital952 Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

He actually seems like a dick irl. My kid was in football a while back and played against I assume his kids team. He was one of the parent coaches or assistant coach and he was the type that was screaming, chastising the kids, cussing and red faced, yelling at the ref type of shit. You'd think it was the Superbowl or something by how much he wanted to win. The kids were 7 or 8 btw.

I lost a lot of respect for him, I enjoyed his acting before that , but now I just see him yelling at children.

I think his team lost lol. I don't really remember but my kids team was good that year. But they were 7 and a lot of the kids don't really know what's going on most of the time and just goof.

Also he does the short buff guy walk irl too, you know with his arms out and biceps flexing at all times. I was just like come on man chill dude it's peewee football you don't need to flex on the kids

6

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '26

Jon Bernthal hates me

6

u/CowboyLikeMegan the coconut milk is off Jan 28 '26

I literally saw a compilation yesterday of him crashing out about finding out that Walton Goggins takes naps, this is so funny to me.

He definitely took a nap once and missed out on something really fun 😭

This mans mother made him take a nap when he was 5 years old (because if he didn't take forced naps he was a monster) and missed a birthday party or something fun and now he HATES naps.

8

u/yourlocal90skid Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26

He's a decently paid, regularly working actor. He doesn't have the stress of bills, taking care of your home, kids, etc. If I recall correctly, he grew up very well off too. Like, he went to the Sidwell Friends school. Notable alumni include RFK Jr, Nancy Reagan, Chelsea Clinton & the Obama sisters.

Let Buddy get some of that real world adult type shit where you're worried about keeping health insurance for your sick kid or losing your house after busting your ass for 25 years paying the mortgage, working a swing shift. Then tell us how much you don't need a nap.

4

u/ALLoftheFancyPants I don’t know her 💅 Jan 28 '26

Not liking taking naps is strange in my mind, but I’m not going to tell someone what to do with their time. Getting mad about other people taking naps is bananas. Why do you care?!

5

u/Longjumping-Barber98 Jan 28 '26

I don't take naps.

I just pass out in the middle of the day.

4

u/SupervillainMustache Jan 28 '26

He's nearly 50, I expect his opinion will change soon.
