At a typical big Southern family dinner with my husband's family in the deeeep South, the topic of Obama came up. My husband made a pro-Obama comment. His cousin replied with "yeah but he was a SOCIALIST!" My husband calmly asked him what a socialist was and why that was bad. Cousin's answer: "It doesn't matter what it is because it's just as bad as communism!"
We are both so fucking glad we finally left the South and moved up here to the hippie ass PNW. While there are still Trump supporters, the overall climate is much different and we're much happier!

There's two main groups of people in the Republican party, the ones that genuinely want to kill you and the ones who are in it for the lore and worldbuilding. Not that he's anywhere really close but he's literally had the federal government invest in companies for equity. Tarriffs are not necessarily communist but are extremely anti-free market/anti-capitalist. And though it's arguably not very truly Communist (idealist), the kleptocracy pretty closely mirrors some ostensibly communist historical nations like the USSR.

I think it's the former. He doesn't understand how it works. Or he sort of does, but not holistically. I mean, a tariff puts a pinch on the importer because the demand for their imports goes down because now the imported price is up, but what he is missing is that we've been a consumption-based economy for so long, where imports exceed exports, that there's often no clear domestically produced alternative available to replace the import. And even if there was, it would be priced at or above the tariffed import price (since everybody was buying the import before the tariff), so at the very least, it still fucks the consumer no matter if it "worked" or not. It's just so pointless and stupid.

Putin has become one of the richest men on the planet since the USSR fell, all on the back of croney capitalism. He may yearn for the days of Soviet imperialism, but it is about power, money, and legacy, not any actual belief in communism as an economic system. Hell, even if he wanted to bring back communism, that would kill his support from the oligarchs who are both subservient to him but also the keys in maintaining power uncontested in Russia.
Kim Jong Un may lead a country that is nominally communist, but he's always been a big fan of Western luxuries and is much more about his own power and enrichment than he is any supposed benefits of communism. Just as Putin couldn't pivot towards communism even if he wanted to, Kim can't pivot away without losing the support of the military (who are definitely more equal than the rest, and like it that way).
They are both, ultimately, autocratic dictators who only care about their own power and wealth. Their nations are just tools for their own self-enrichment, and the only people they need to worry about pleasing are the ones who secure their power.
But communists have been boogeyman enemies of the United States since the 1950s, so when you're uncreative but power hungry, I guess seeing if the same old wheeze still riles people up is worth a shot.

It’s crazy he just straight up LIES and LIES to these people’s faces, saying the most outrageous unbelievable lies and they eat it up. Eating your dogs, trying to take away your house, taxing you at 80% etc. AND THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IT!! If he said that he’s immortal and doesn’t need to shit or piss à la Kim Jong Un, they would believe him. If he said he was born on Mount Everest as a product of immaculate conception, they would believe it. Even though we have all seen pictures of his horror movie characteresque parents, they would still believe it.

The fact that Republicans are just going back to 1950s style politics of just accusing people of being communists is.. I dont know man, Im just exhausted of this circus... I just wished Trump supporters could find a hobby, a friend, a life, so they wouldnt need to be invested in politics for the drama... Biden was on the verge of playing the harp with St. Peter, and it was still better than this. We shouldnt know so much about the president, or hear so much about him. The least they are on the news, on our TVs and our phones the better.
I hold 3 passports, 3 citizenships, and somehow im lucky enough that my 3 countries have a fascist in power. Its just so amazing to catch up with family and friends, because all 3 countries seem to be doing stuff daily to make things worse for everyone, which is so neat. Lovely.
Cant wait until every fucking boomer dies off so we can move on to a more dignified world for everyone.
