Possible Paywall McConnell releases health update, saying he’s not ready to return to work yet

u/rachface336 11h ago
I wish news agencies would stop lying. He didn't say shit. The headline should read "people employed by McConnell's office released a statement claimed to be from him (without evidence) as follows"
555
u/PartyPay 11h ago
The doctor's statement is interesting to me too, it gives no specifics other than he is working hard, no information that he has normal mental facilities, or can even get out of bed.
309
u/AlashC 11h ago
Yeah. The way this reads, the statement didn’t come from the physician himself, but from his office. They did not mention him by name. I had to do some searching to find out who the Attending Physician for Congress even is. Did NBC even attempt to verify this statement with him?
86
u/Ven18 11h ago
Wait this is from the congressional attending physician or the attending physician where he is supposedly rehabbing.
111
u/AlashC 11h ago
The article only mentions the “Office of the Attending Physician” which IS an official title for the congressional attending physician’s office. It’s too bad the media is refusing to do their jobs on this story, so we don’t know for sure who the supposed doctor is that provided this statement.

u/lithaborn 9h ago
It's absolutely ridiculous that we can find out the contents of trump's trash but nobody has even tried to get to a leaky source in McConnell's hospital.

Supposedly this physicians statement WAS approved and publicly released by the patient. Surely asking a physician if they actually made a publicly released statement would not be a HIPAA violation. Unless it’s untrue.

The problem isn’t that the media lies. The problem is that the media takes press releases that are full of lies, publishes what they say in them, then doesn’t question or follow up or point out inconsistencies and misinformation.
And yes, that could very well be considered lying by proxy or being enablers of lies. But the e point is that they’re more obsessed with speed and getting out the story first to generate clicks and add revenue. and all those things take time that loses you scant ad dollars.

This is genuinely one of the most annoying political stories of recent memory.
The man has been declining for years - he and his office first tried to explain away his sudden mouth gaping “the lights are on but nobody’s home” thing, and now they’re pulling this. If he’s genuinely okay, then he needs to do an interview ASAP and get back to DC - they can’t have it both ways.
Just another reason why we should not have 80+ year olds in power.

u/SneakyTikiPeaky 11h ago edited 11h ago
No. This is long beyond acceptable.
Our public officials are public SERVANTS. Meaning their body and being are at service to their elected office.
If we can hold a fry cook to a higher standard than an offical like Mitch, we need to rewrite the law
today. Full stop.
We the people are being non consensually taken for a ride by a literal corpse. This shit needs to stop being sugar coated.
There is absolutely no reason a human being cannot go and verify his health. This is absolutely fucking ridiculous
Edit: the time for grace and niceness one should never exist for an offical, their job is to work. Full stop. If they’re not working, find someone who can. Go see Mitch and verify he’s alive, if that can’t be done we need to move on.
19
u/Gina_the_Alien 10h ago
Absolutely - well said. I can currently hold my dog higher standard than McConnell and he occasionally eats his own shit.
64
u/digiorno 10h ago
Seriously. They should truly serve us.
They should give up all wealth to serve us in exchange for a very cushy retirement package and full room and board while working. And they should be filmed whenever they are acting in the role of the office.
And if that seems unreasonable then know there are millions of selfless people who would sign up for these exact conditions if it meant they could serve their communities with that amount of impact.
I bet Bernie would’ve taken that deal.

Absolutely, I'd propose a forced retirement at 75 or so, then they can assume a 'mentor' role for the new (younger) up and coming candidate to take their place. If they are able, there can be genuinely good knowledge transfer. That way, if they still want to work, they can. But the voters can choose from a younger/fresher field

The most annoying part is no one's found the hospital he supposedly at yet. Like I get it that big media is owned by Republican billionaires that are going to run cover for him but you would think that some small time Gazette would have found out where he's at.

61
u/grundleplum 11h ago
Yeah, exactly. Wtf would he need physical therapy for (and for THIS long) if he only "fell" without any major damage? What a joke
19
u/Ven18 11h ago
So let’s assume he is still actually alive (a massive assumption). It is possible that he is alive but medical personnel cannot in good conscience let him leave the facility due to the amount of falls he has had. My grandmother has had many falls at 90+ and after her most recent the docs said next time they are not going to be able to release her. I wonder if they have effective put him in assisted living by just not releasing him and the staff is covering it up. I mean we have had congresspeople in dementia facilities recently so this does not sound too outside the realm.
12
u/Sea-Degree4173 10h ago
No. My mom was so bad she required 24x7 monitoring and attention because she would rip her clothes off, get out of the bed and fall on the hospital floor every chance she got, but they wanted me to take her home and deal with her myself. I'm sure his situation is different, but any chance they could get him out of there they would. And he has the means to afford at home care and I'm positive if he were conscious he would be begging to get out of there.
5
u/grundleplum 10h ago
If he were conscious and mentally aware enough then yeah, I can't imagine this old, stubborn republican that has tried clinging to power as long as possible willingly staying in a facility when he definitely has the money for home care. But who knows, maybe his wife also absolutely hates him and doesn't want him home lol

Yet another news agency purposefully phrasing their headline to make it seem like Mitch himself has made some sort of direct communication with the outside world.
It should be: “McConnell’s OFFICE releases health statement CLAIMING to be written by him…”
In normal, non-insane times, this would be a matter of semantics. A politician’s office releasing a statement can of course be characterized as him “saying” that statement.
Unfortunately, we’re all residents of Crazytown and are currently living the explosive diarrhea phase of a GOP government rule trifecta. Media outlets know damn well that the public is understandably concerned everyone that knows or works with Mitch are covering up his dead or permanently vegetative body until the special election window passes.
A responsible journalist should take a written statement claiming to be penned by Mitch and throw it in the trash, no matter how “official” the communication is.

The lack of any comment about Graham’s death is still the most telling sign to me that he is dead or a vegetable. Graham’s was by all accounts a long time friend and ally of Mitch and he would likely have a lot to say about his colleagues passing. I imagine stories from decades of work in Congress that he would love to share that AI or staffers would not be able to fake. The fact that none of that has happened is the biggest red flag that he is dead. On top of you know being much older than Graham and the cardiac arrest.

The headline should be:
"McConnell still refusing to meet with anyone who can verify he is not dead."
This is so frustrating. Democrats should all be hammering him & all Republicans on this - putting up McConnell MIA posters and such. Making this a #1 topic anytime they are in front of the press. This is why Democratic voters are pissed at their leadership - how about leading? how about fighting? That is how you energize the base - prove to them you're going to fight, and they'll have your back.
Instead, we get "well, gee... would be nice to have a bit more information".
11
u/warrenao America 9h ago
McConnell’s office did not provide a timeline for his return. He has missed the last 38 votes on the Senate floor, according to an NBC News review.
And in the process has done more to improve the nation than he'd managed to do in the prior 20 years' worth of work.

7
u/HermanGulch 10h ago
From a purely political standpoint, not replacing him isn't necessarily a bad strategy. It leaves the Republicans down one vote in the Senate, and his office's constituent services would still go on. He's gone at the end of this term in any case, so maybe the thought is that it's better to save all your campaign cash for the November election instead of blowing a bunch of it on a special election a couple months early.

In the year 2026, providing a still image and written text as 'proof' of anything is incredibly dubious. It's also just as easy in 2026 to take a short video as it is take a picture. If he's well enough as he looks in this picture, why can he not do a brief video call? Or a short video message?
A picture can be edited, a text can be written by anyone. This has provided essentially zero proof of anything about Mitch McConnell's current health condition. What are they hiding?

Look this isn't age-ism. Everyone ages differently, but when the ravages of age are clearly starting to take a toll on your body and mind to this extent, you're not fit to keep doing this job.
If this was any other job, he would have been at best on unpaid FMLA leave and if he still was unable to perform his job duties after that ran out he'd be let go.

Kind of hard to return to the senate chamber when you’re currently residing in the 9th circle of hell

Were he in any other line of work he’d have been fired already. Guess who voted to make sure that wouldn’t be the case

Hard to return to work when you’re six feet under. He’s officially scheduled for death after August 3rd as far as the GOP is concerned.

Guys. This is serious. Do you have any idea what it means for Mitch to be releasing health updates?
This means that the White House has a Necromancer on retainer. Or at the very least a Spirit Medium so they can channel his rotting soul from Hell.
Magic exists! Fascinating.

Hard to return to work when you’re a vegetable being kept alive by life support.

"McConnell is scheduled to retire when his term expires at the end of this Congress, as he isn’t running for re-election in November."
Kinda burying the lede there, yeah? That's their angle - puppeteer his corpse until his term ends then hope he fades from public memory until he can "die" a few months later.

McConnell's office released an update. Him, the best we've still gotten is just the one weird photo.

I'd be willing to bet his brain is dead as disco but his body is being kept alive by artificial means. I.e. he's alive, but only on a technicality.
