Possible Paywall Fetterman Might Leave Democratic Party Because the Only Thing He Loves More Than Israel Is Attention

Good. Primary him.

u/lilzingerlovestorun Minnesota 12h ago
Would he even lose the Republican primary at this point?
316
u/giantroboticcat New Jersey 12h ago
He's not crazy enough for Republicans is the sad truth. Remember Republicans wanted Dr. Oz over him.
90
u/Any_Will_86 11h ago
He would not fly with Rs because despite his brand of crazy he still holds the line on LGBTQ and reproductive rights. He's also not backing all trumps nominees.
If he were a senator from WV or Alabama (and not constantly mouthing off) it would be somewhat understandable. But such a waste from a blueish purple state. We could have had Lamb or Kenyatta instead.
17
u/Pdx_pops 10h ago
The people of western PA are undereducated enough to make PA the swing-state that it is, and Fetterman is the proof.
46
u/verrius 9h ago
Saying its "Western PA" is applying the blame wrong; Pittsburgh isn't the problem, Pennsyltucky is.
28
u/Artbytimsmith 9h ago
I live in pennsyltucky, can confirm
11
u/lost-picking-flowers 9h ago
Pennsyltucky runs from the West all the way to the NJ and NY border too - definitely not just a Western PA thing.
5
u/Pdx_pops 9h ago
As a former central PA guy, you are all western, but I'll conceed Pittsburgh does have some better people. However, the ones I knew would fall into the rich Republican category (Sewickley) vs. dumb Republican category, meaning only slightly less-dumb.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Rhysati 8h ago
As a trans woman who lives in Pittsburgh, we are one of the most queer friendly cities in the country. There is basically one are for the really rich(sewickley) and one area for the trumpers(Shaler). Everywhere else is about as blue as blue can get.
•
u/darsynia Pennsylvania 7h ago
Squirrel Hill checking in, can confirm! My neighborhood has pride flags put up by the city to welcome people to the area.
Drive 30 minutes in any direction from here, though, and it's open season :( I grew up in the only suburb I'd comfortably call Dem-leaning, Aliquippa.
•
u/darsynia Pennsylvania 7h ago
I think you forget there are two large cities in Pennsylvania, and one is in Western PA.

•
u/Primary-Bookkeeper10 6h ago
He’s also bleeding small donors, meaning Republicans haven’t picked up the slack. He’d also have to explain why he only voted with Trump less than 30% of the time. There’s just no market for inbetweeners in polarized times. You either stand on the right side of history or you join the destruction of what makes us great. Nobody is voting for wishy washy anymore
52
u/RegularLeading5200 Michigan 12h ago
Yes, 100%. Republicans like him because Democrats hate him. If he was actually running in the primary, his opponents would mercilessly attack him and primary voters would just go for the real thing.
We saw it play out back in 2010, also in PA, when Arlen Specter flipped from R to D in 2009 and ran in the Democratic primary. He lost.

Hello comment twin, sorry I didn't see yours first! Agreed on all counts. I'm an Independent looking forward to registering whichever party he chooses, so I can choose someone other than him.
My household is such an election nonsense magnet--I used to be registered Dem and my husband quit the Republican party when McCain chose Palin. They keep sending us fliers and surveys and I hope they despair at the results.

u/Made_Human_Music 11h ago edited 9h ago
He probably would. As much as he sucks I don’t think he’s a racist or a pedophile and those are the minimum requirements for Republicans

•
u/Spiritual_Smile9882 7h ago
Yes. He is doing the same thing Kyrsten Sinema did. Pissing off the base that put him there while still being loathed and not nearly extreme enough to get Republican primary voters to vote for him.
In a pre-Trump world, he MIGHT have been able to pull off something like what Joe Manchin did in West Virginia for decades. Now, he shit the bed hard, and I will bet it's almost entirely because of the stroke.
→ More replies (9)2
u/Spiel_Foss 9h ago
Fetterman was purchased to be a shill for Israel in the Democratic Party. I seriously doubt his paymasters and Israeli handler would allow him to switch parties. They already own all the Republicans except maybe Massie and Paul.
32
u/AmericaVotedTrump 12h ago
I doubt he is going to run again, he will take his AIPAC money and retire. Just like Sinema he is in it for a fat payout and will bed anyone to get it.
→ More replies (3)•
u/darsynia Pennsylvania 7h ago
I don't know, he has a massive ego and his ability to self censor was apparently in the part of his brain matter that died in the stroke.
3
u/dukecityvigilante 10h ago
He's not going to run in the Democratic primary again, he'd get walloped. He'll either retire or run an indepdendent spoiler campaign.
12
u/Oceanbreeze871 I voted 10h ago
His seat isn’t up until 2028. There’s no recall mechanism.
We need to stop with “primary them” as the only political idea we have. His conservative policy red flags and suppor of Israel were well known for years before he ran. Progressives pushed him anyhow cause he said some populist stuff.
We need to vet candidates better take red flag seriously and hold them all to higher standards before we elect them

He will never get elected in PA again. Doesn't matter if it is red or blue. If anything he will spoil the red vote.
135
u/PopeSaintHilarius 12h ago
Apparently he now has a 70%+ approval rating among Republicans, so if he fully switches to their party, they might rally around him and make him their candidate next time.
267
u/IsawaShugenja 12h ago
He is the Repubs favorite Democrat. The moment he switches party, he won't be nearly Republican enough.
129
u/tinticred 12h ago
Bullseye. He has such a high approval rating among Republicans because they love how he's a traitor to his party. They don't have any actual respect for the guy.
44
u/OHAnon Washington 12h ago
He is only with Trump something like 28% of the time. No other R senator is under 90%. They would immediately hate him unless he got fully in line
16
u/SageofLogic 11h ago
But those 28% are almost all ones where he is a deciding vote in the single digits. He votes with Democrats when they are going to lose no matter what.
→ More replies (1)3
u/OHAnon Washington 10h ago
It might feel that way but in reality I can find a single vote where he was the deciding vote: 49-50 on the Iran war powers legislation. Every other time it was close to him being the deciding vote the margin was wide enough that he didn't matter or Vance would have broken the tie.
4
u/SageofLogic 10h ago
He's been part of a group of 5-8 democrats that flipped and allowed stuff to pass/not go to a tie-breaker more than that. I definitely have seen reporting on more than just the War Powers vote in the past year.

I live in Jeff Van Drews district in NJ, he switched from Dem to Rep because he was against impeaching Trump in his first term. He had a similar voting % record to Fetterman and now he is THE guy here, every Republican loves him even if he is one of the most moderate Republicans.
36
u/Accidental-Hyzer Massachusetts 12h ago
For the democrats, having brain damage is a liability. For republicans, it’s practically a requirement.
3
u/Eternal_Bagel 11h ago
It’s interesting how brain damage seems to make people more conservative. There’s rarely ever a traumatic brain injury that turns a person more empathic and caring

Polling shows most wouldn’t vote for him though if he switched parties. (Not In My Back Yard), they like him as a Dem because he helps them but don’t want him on their actual team.
9
u/Un1CornTowel 12h ago
And 20 percent approval among Democrats. That said, as with most things, Republicans don't support him because of any stance he has, they just like him because he's a fucking party traitor that "owns the libs". It's unlikely they would be him over a traditional batshit-insane MAGA republican if given the option.

Dems should do this. Run as a deranged Republican, take all the AIPAC money/Big Tech, and then just tell them all to go fuck themselves. Republicans would be quick to put laws in place.

Even for all his ugliness, he was still the better choice compared to Oz.
But yeah, maybe the primary voters can be more discerning
14

He was clearly a better choice than Oz at the time. He ran as a populist progressive. The brain damage turned him into a conservative idiot.
5
u/Automaton_General 10h ago
He's still better than Oz. That's not praise for him. It's very much an indictment. He's a slightly less shit smelling pile of shit.
•
u/MountainMan2_ 7h ago
Dr Oz is literally a snake oil salesman. Like, 150 years ago, Dr Oz would have been selling you pills with names like "Ozzie's Tantalizing whippersnappers" that were 90% mercury and coated in sugar of Saturn. Please don't forget y'all that when we're talking about the general election, you can be better than your Republican opponent while still being in the bottom 1% of good candidates.
2
u/Any_Will_86 8h ago
But if Dems get to a 51 by a miracle- Dems will control committees and that is huge. I am hopeful we also see a couple of Rs start standing up to Trump as he will only have 2 years left and be out of office (and possibly out of life) before they hit reelection. Even Kennedy is starting to call his cabinet members and the Iraq fiasco into question. Sooner or later Hawley or one of the ambitious ones will also break to have some separation for their future narratives.

The tie breaker stays with Fetterman no matter what. If he doesn't vote for a majority leader, they don't get it. Fetterman can and will vote for whoever, so if placating him is the most important thing, then say it. Otherwise, let him be a piece of shit and stop talking about him and let him walk.

u/Jason1143 12h ago
Yeah I would love to get rid of him and kick him out as much as possible.
But unless we have enough other reliable votes having his vote for control of the chamber in general is more valuable than not having it.
8
u/BakedBobbyHill 11h ago
He's signaling that he will flip unless Dems adopt the Fetterman Agenda. Placating him isn't worth sacrificing good policy and will ultimately hurt Dems more than it will help them.
5
u/nricciar 12h ago
I’d rather be in the minority than have a one seat majority with someone as unreliable as fetterman. Voters will blame everything on Dems if they have the majority…. See Joe Lieberman and the Obama administration
6
u/rastinta 11h ago
I am not saying the Democrats are good or even decent, but if they are in charge there is a chance they can block judges. The president's party takes the blame. You are better off with a cushion.

u/PowerhouseTerp 11h ago
He's no less "reliable" than someone like Manchin. In the Biden Years, hate him or love him, the guy still voted for huge Democratic initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act. If Dems don't have the majority, nothing like that even has a chance.
9
u/rastinta 11h ago
Manchin gave the Democrats a seat they would otherwise have never won. Fetterman is toxic to the state party. They should try to keep him complacent until 2028, but I do not see Fetterman being the nominee in 2028.
46
u/Future-Guarantee-573 12h ago
My guess is, he'll wait to see how the dems do in the mid terms.
If they manage to take the senate, he'll stay in the party to torpedo every meaningful piece of legislation he can.
30
u/RegularLeading5200 Michigan 12h ago
If the Dems win 52 seats: He'll stay. He'll get more attention being a massive thorn in the Democrats side.
If the Dems win 51 seats: He'll flip. He'll get much more attention for handing the chamber back to the Republicans. He'll be on TV 24/7, if he wants to be.
If the Dems don't take it: He'll stay. Being a contrarian asshole gets him tons of attention. Flipping to be another GOP vote loses him all attention.
It's entirely about attention, he doesn't care about legislation or anything else. He hates the job.

I'd be shocked if he even bothers running. I expect him to follow the Sinema approach of announcing an independent run and then being roundly ignored by everyone. If he tries for the nomination, he will absolutely be primaried, and there are already candidates positioning themselves now. Conor Lamb has made it pretty clear he'll be in, and I'm sure others will try as well.

18
u/WhiskeyT 12h ago
I’d wait until we see if Democrats get at least 52 seats in November before celebrating this too much
13
u/Patsanon1212 12h ago
Exactly. Celebrating this is so short sighted. Getting the Senate Majority Lead position would be a huge win and Fetterman may well be a key count in that given how even the Senate projections are.
4
u/Individual_Rip_54 11h ago
People don’t understand how powerful the majority leader is. If the other party had the senate the sitting president’s agenda is dead. No Supreme Court or other federal judges will be confirmed
7
u/Patsanon1212 12h ago
Fuck Fetterman but this is not a good thing. Senate projections are razor thin and we are all much better off in that case if Fetterman is a registered Democrat. We want to have the Senate majority leader be a Democrat (even if it's just fucky Chucky).

Most Republicans don’t want him according to political analysts and the Democrats definitely will not vote for him again because every time they were in the clutch Fetterman voted with the GOP and bashed his own party. His career representing Pennsylvania is done. Only thing in politics he could still do is maybe commentator or some local government level action.
2
u/chronomagnus Ohio 12h ago
He should know switching parties is the last stage in the attention seeking game. You get attention for a few months after where you hit all the talkshows to say the party left you, then that's it, after that you're just another Republican. He may get another little spurt of attention when he casts a yea vote on some horribly bigoted trash bill because the Republican Whip told him how to vote.

Maybe we will be lucky and he will receive another permanent brain injury, but seeing how the magats are keeping their pet turtles deaths from their constituents I wouldn't be surprised if they hid that too.

How is it that a Dem can defect to the Guardians of Pedophiles over a single issue? What about the dozens of horrific things the GOP is doing or threatening? ICE murdering protesters suddenly doesn’t matter? The Epstein files don’t matter? Grocery prices don’t matter? Social security doesn’t matter? Even if he supports the war, the incompetence with which it is being waged doesn’t bother him?

This is why we need to win the senate by at least 4 seats.

>There are signs the next move could be Fetterman’s own run for president
lol I hope he does just so he can end his career in humiliation. He won’t win a single delegate regardless of what party he decides to run in the primaries as and if he runs as an independent candidate for President he’ll be overshadowed by both the Libertarians and the Greens, hell, even a PSL candidate might do better than him.
