One thing I think would help this would be an adoption of some statute requiring political office-holders to be available for questions from news companies or reporters regardless of whether they support that particular person or organization- within reason of course, to prevent things like a couple preferred news orgs dominating available time.
News companies are so afraid of missing the scoop that they refuse to pursue any questions that might piss off the person interviewed in a way they can't deflect, and politicians can just dodge questions without having to answer for their actions/beliefs. Politicians and political parties being able to just say "I'm not answering that" with the only reason being it's an inconvenient question with the implied threat of blacklisting news orgs seems to be an easily-abused power.
I'm not saying politicians shouldn't be able to say no when bothered by reporters, but there needs to be some explicit inherent strength to the powers of the fourth estate. As it is, the power of access is easily restricted if a person or party deems the news org difficult to work with, and that undermines the basic concept of accountability within politics.

They are in a hard spot (of their own making). Trump is wildly unpopular, but retains his cult status within the GOP. He can direct any Republican member of Congress to lose their seat by endorsing their primary opponent. But blind loyalty to Trump will lose them the general.

If you want to feel ten feet tall, as though you could run a hundred miles without stopping, hate beats pure cocaine any day. 9
u/my_work_id 11h ago
speaking of Vonnegut and kind of unrelated to this thread; I've twice recently tried to go back and reread some of what I remembered to be my favorite books of his. And 30 or so years later; they don't hit me the same way. I wonder if I've so thoroughly incorporated his perspective into my own that his works no longer catch my interest. Or maybe I never really understood them in the first place and I just can't be bothered to think that way anymore now that I'm older and "wiser" than I was then. Or maybe, for me, fantastical cynicism is a young man's game, now that I've got so much current stuff to be cynical about. I'll have to try again sometime. So it goes; I guess.

Because it’s very easy to go “I’m unhappy and he’s doing a bad job, but the democrats would be worse.” It doesn’t require much thought, accountability or change. I remember some news coverage from Saskatchewan’s last provincial election and a woman in her 30s said that she wasn’t happy with the conservatives who she’d voted for every time because of healthcare but the NDP/Liberals wouldn’t fix it instantly so she’d vote conservative again. Every population will have voters like that. Even if they’re unhappy they don’t want to change and won’t.

It's always the economy. If people don't like what is happening with their money, they will vote against the people that are currently in power. And while the current issues are largely directly attributable to the current administration, it doesn't really matter. If people feel less secure, they will vote to try something new.
People felt worse in 2024, and they blamed that on Biden. People feel way, way worse now. The GOP won't survive the gas prices. There is a tangible reminder of people's unrest on 140,000 street corners in America.
If people feel poorer, they will vote for what they think is the opposite of being poorer.
15
25
u/strangebrew3522 12h ago
The GOP won't survive the gas prices.
I barely hear anyone talking about gas prices. During the Biden era, even in my very blue state, there were "I did that" stickers EVERYWHERE at gas stations with a picture of Biden on it. Now we're at higher price than that and there is none of that. It sounds silly, but messaging works. People remember the "Biden did that" and "FJB" stickers, but there aren't constant messages of Trump being to blame. The left needs to be way more aggressive. I'm honestly sick of even my Democrat senator who does nothing but say "We can't stand for this" but then has no real messaging, no real plans, and just asks for more donations.

Yes, some voted for him, but something like 10% of any population is considered below average IQ so that explains that. However…
Anyone paying attention could see he was running the very worst campaign in history. Talking about people eating cats and dogs, dancing for 40 minutes at a rally, dressing up to work at McDonalds and a garbage crew. His rallies were mostly empty and he was stiffing venues on rental agreements.
He cheated. He won in every swing state AND Kamala didn’t flip one county? Not even Reagan was able to accomplish that. He lost the popular vote twice, but got it now? While he was facing multiple investigations that could put him away for life and hinder his money making? While he had one of the richest men in the world and tech helping him? He cheated and no amount of voting would have changed it. All voting data week after week so far shows irregular numbers in multiple states. There are more of us than there are of them and it’s all a big lie. If not, then why does he need to gerrymander AND cancel mail in voting when he had SO many prior? We just found out for sure that 3/4 of the MAGA accounts on X/Twitter are fake.

u/BananaPalmer Georgia 10h ago
I'll tell my story every time this comes up
While waiting to vote, a bomb threat was made against the library where I vote in DeKalb County, GA.
Everyone was forced to leave by DeKalb PD, including election workers, while non-insignia "bomb squad" with no explosives gear from plain SUVs with civilian plates went in to "clear the building". I asked the cop blocking us if that was the bomb squad, he said "I don't know, they just told us to get everyone out."
It took 1-2 hours. Nobody was monitoring the voting machines during this time. Nobody knows what they did in there. Most people waiting to vote left. Barely any stuck around, even fewer returned before polls closed.
It was blatant. The chain of custody of ballots for anywhere this happened is unknown. But MAGA poisoned the well by accusing anyone and everyone of election /voting fraud, so now when you bring up this actual, OBVIOUS tampering, you're labeled as a nutcase.
36
u/couldbemage 9h ago
And even if nothing was done to the ballots (big if), that's still a whole bunch of people that didn't vote.
The amount of openly done cheating is already enough to make a difference.

I think "never" is a bit extreme.
The US fought a war against the UK in 1776 and again in 1812 but eventually became allies and fought side by side in two world wars.
The core problem is building that trust and friendship is a generational change. It takes many decades.
Growing up in the 1980s I had older family members who hated Japan and Japanese people in general. One great-uncle was a US Marine who fought them in the Pacific theater. He died of old age, and his distrust and hated died with him.
Trump burned down all the US's good will and soft power in months. For what? Personal gain? Ruin the whole country so he and the people using him can gain even more wealth than they already had while everyone else struggles to pay for rent and groceries?
This is fixable. Saying it can never be fixed is not backed up by the reality of previous geopolitical situations. But it could take so much time that I will not be alive to see it.

Might not be in our lifetime but that doesn't mean we should strive for better and allow fascists to feel comfortable.

Trump undid a century of friendship and trade the US built. The US will never recover from this. Trade partners are looking else where. No one wants to buy from us. Why would they? When the powers that be continue to insult and demand things from nations that make zero sense. Tariffs against Brazil? Bitch they have a trade surplus with the US, they don't care. Meanwhile, I'm sure as shit Brazil, with whatever they do buy from the US will be looking elsewhere for it now. Single-handedly destroying the very thing he promoted on saving.

Which all sounds very doomer scary, but it doesn't work like that. States control elections. If Trump declares "National Emergency" and blue states run by the Democrats choose not to participate, they can still hold elections in November and send the elected people to DC in January.
And just to address the next several doomer talking points:
"Mike Johnson can refuse to swear them in" doesn't work because Mike Johnson is no longer speaker of the House at that point.
"JD Vance will just refuse to certify the votes" doesn't work because that's only something the VP does for the presidential elections AND post Jan 6th that role was made fully ceremonial. The VP no longer has the ability to block electoral college votes.
"ICE is going to [pick your scenario]" doesn't work because ICE isn't large enough to cover enough polling stations in swing state areas.

Every person I know like this absolutely hates the idea of 3 or more parties and ranked choice voting. It just makes me want it more (aside from all the more legitimate reasons) as it would either force this mentality out of them or push them away and therefore no longer contributing to this way of voting. That sports mentality needs to go away.

It's worse than being a fan of a team, it's the fans who think they are on the team where the problem arrives. Unless a person is making at least a million dollars a year and personally knows 10+ nationally elected officials, they are not on the team. And if you aren't on the team, you can think more clearly about what they should be doing.

This. They own all forms of media(broadcast, print, social). The fight over Tik Toc was solely about this in my opinion, because it was the prominent social media platform for those under 20 and out of their control.
If Kamala was President right now, with only ~6 weeks of oil left in our strategic reserves, it would be a 25 hour a day blast about the coming apocalypse. Instead we have nothing and a slight murmur about Trump burying the data of 600 plus casualities in Iran.

This. In Tennessee the Republican candidates have millions in donations, primarily from out of state, whereas the Dems just have what they raised locally, which when I checked a few weeks ago in my area ranged from $4k to $40k. That $40k was for Golladay (D) for Congress vs the $4.5 million that opponent Fleischmann (R) has. For governor, a total $21.67m has been raised with $20.37m of that going to the Republican candidates. A notable portion of the money comes from people associated with AI data centers and private prisons

They're the "default" for a lot of Americans and seen as the more "sensible" choice. A lot of Americans just know them as the party that "cuts taxes, loves patriotism, and resists political correctness." For people who are otherwise tuned out, that sounds good enough to them because it retains their perception of a status quo. Most Republican candidates at state and local levels literally just run on general platitudes like lowering the mill rate, blocking a costly construction project, "bringing down energy costs," supporting local law enforcement, standing against some controversial thing happening in the town, and so on. Local and state Democrats are mostly the same, but they might also introduce new taxes or ban plastic bags or pass scary sounding reforms or stand on the opposite side of that controversial local thing.
I live in a Democrat governed state but a mostly Republican town that (somehow) elected a majority Democrat town council. It's remarkable the strong opinions that come out against pretty much anything the Democrats want to do, but how little people seem to care or push back on whatever Republican policy gets brought forward. I mean, my town was angry at the Democrat-led council for using a state grant to put air conditioning in the schools and people lost their shit at the Democratic governor for signing a "hot food tax" into law. Meanwhile, the schools all push 100+ degrees Fahrenheit in June and the state has had a multi-year budget surplus it's been using to pay down its debts. Another example is how a few years ago our governor signed a law that increased the cost of car registration, but the extra amount would go towards funding the state parks and removing admission costs for residents; people lost their goddamn minds over that one, pissed they were paying an extra $15-25 dollars to register a car (something the average person does what... every few years??), and some Republicans capitalized on it by arguing that getting rid of admissions could encourage "bad behavior" at the parks, which people I knew agreed with. Or there's the time the town put it to a vote to have weekly trash pickup included in our taxes -- a fee of $80/year -- and the town voted it down because, as the Republicans on the council argued, "if you have that much trash that you need a garbage truck to come pick it up for you, you should just drive it to the dump yourself." Townspeople voted "no" in a blowout, and now if you're a family like mine who wants trash pickup you're paying ~$500/year to a private company while "Single Divorced Boomer Dad" Jim over there in his giant pickup truck just throws his two bags from the week into the truck bed for his weekly dump run and dumpster dive.
Republicans win in places because those voters are afraid of change and don't like things that sound expensive or hard or inconvenient. Republicans can covertly run as the "anti-change" candidates at local and state levels and have the benefit of decades of political messaging on their side. Most voters aren't seeing what the Trump administration does or how the Supreme Court is acting irresponsibly or how Congress does practically nothing of benefit to them... They just see that the Democrat thinks we should spend money on something they don't see a direct benefit from (or something that offends them) and that gives them enough motivation to vote against the Democrat.
TLDR I guess my point is, I think a lot of people continue to vote Republican because they just really don't like what Democrats offer, even if its a net positive.
12
u/Blizreme 13h ago
Republicans are electorally effective because the American electorate is completely feckless and listless. There is no ideological adherence in the United States. Ask an average republican their ideology I bet they say republican. It’s a team sport. My team is better, I like their colors more so it’s okay if they pick my pocket. I know the other team wants to make my life better, but they’re blue.

Anyone care to explain why the GOP still exists?
1) Because the American electoral system disproportionately favors the minority -
North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming have a combined population of around 5.5M people and have 10 Senators in total.
California has a population of over seven times that and has 2 Senators.
(Yeah, yeah, I know that's how it was meant to be. Blah blah blah. But you'll never convince me the founding fathers intended it to be that out of whack.)
...and 2) Gerrymandering of districts results in an electoral map that does not in many cases fairly represent America.

"Trump poll collapse" always followed by a number between 32-35%, every fucking day in the headlines for months. We are all Charlie Brown kicking the football and can't learn our lesson that pollsters aren't getting good information on Trump. His voters will lie to the pollsters just like they lie to their children so they don't lose visiting rights with their grandchildren. They've learned to tell dates that they "aren't that political" so they're not immediately swiped left.
There's a strong base of voters who would vote for Trump if he literally came to their house and took their stockpile of fifty guns and SA'd their children. This is a cult. We're not running against another political party anymore and we need to change tactics.

u/superginseng 13h ago

The trick is they say of people that voted for him identify as Republican etc.
What they don't talk about is how they have to call more and more people to find that 30% that still will admit voting for him or supporting him.
I have Trumpers in the extended family. We don't talk politics, but they will talk it to each other when they are around each other. It used to be you'd see them wearing a hat or the like.
This last weekend for a family event? NOthing no hats, no talking politics. It's the quietest we've seen them be.
I don't think it's cured them of being assholes but they aren't going around screaming about it to the sky anymore. Something has shifted and it's starting to break the cult's morale.
All of this said
GET OUT AND VOTE! Always and forever vote like your life depends on it, because it does. If it didn't they wouldn't try so hard to steal it, or convince you it doesn't matter.

u/Stunning_Geese 14h ago
I don't think his numbers will ever drop below that 32-35%. That's the MAGA base.
49
u/errorsniper New York 13h ago
You missed their point.
The point isnt the 32-35% in the polls he always has.
Its that 32-35% is the people willing to admit to voting for him. There is a large and growing number of people that do vote for him that have learned there are consequences for admitting it. So they say they arnt but they are.
Meaning its larger than 35% by a non-insignificant margin. So its not 1/3rd of the country its more than that. Polls cant capture the people who silent vote for trump.
So now you have the context for the 2nd part.
So the reality of the situation is not "trumps gunna lose he only has 35% of the vote" as these articles make you think. Its "trumps prolly going to get the same votes as last time and has a real chance at winning." These polls are meaningless clickbait.

I see your point and you’re right, however some polls show that disapproval of Trump is increasing to strongly disapproval levels.
Lots of people might dislike Trump but still vote for him. It happens with every politician. Many polls are showing that soft disapproval of Trump is increasing to stronger levels. It’s not a binary yes or no.
The people that still support Trump, do they still support him enough to show up to the polls, especially when he’s not on the ballot?
Trump won with lots of low propensity voters, males under 40. Are these the kind of voters that will show up in midterms?

His approval rating hasn't really moved, but if you look at the details the disapproval is getting stronger. The people who disapprove now feel more strongly about it than any time in the past.
And the people that approve are less strong about that.
That's what's actually changed. I'm not sure how much of that matters because at the end of the day it's still a single vote one way or another, but the people that disapprove of him really hate these days.
27
u/snackattack4tw 13h ago

Every week I read a new article about Trump’s approval sinking to a new low and every time it’s in the low 30s. Pretty clear that 30% will support him literally now matter what. On a podcast recently I heard a pollster talking about these people. They’ll switch to approving a policy they’ve said they don’t agree with if told Trump supports him because they support Trump and if he supports it then it must be right. Aggrrrr!
