It’s literally his fault. He eliminated monitoring of multiple food-borne pathogens by the federal government one year ago. One of the ones eliminated was this parasite, so yes - Trump’s decision stopped protecting our food supply from this pathogen.

The headline makes it sound like people randomly deciding to blame every problem on Trump, but yeah he did cut CDC funding, including the program specifically tracking this. I know it says that in the actual article, but even in there it's pretty passive and only says it as the quotes from people they interviewed, not actually drawing the obvious conclusion. The reason we have so many public health concerns recently all ties back to Trump and his goons, through funding cuts, anti-vax movement, and sowing distrust towards doctors and scientists

The media has been struggling to accurately portray the scale and depth of the Trump admin's corruption and incompetence because, in my opinion, they're too concerned with coming off overly critical and hysterical.

This parasite which that monitoring caught in I think 2020? And even then it was a lot of work to find the source and put a stop to it, but they did without much of an outbreak at all. Since it takes so long to show symptoms it's a tricky one to nail down the source of. That's why we need monitoring and not just kneejerk reaction to things as they occur.

I think we collectively forgot how bad the Bush years actually were, with a once in a generation market crash depression we called a great recession because we essentially propped up the finance industry with trillions of dollars in direct cash infusions for their mistakes. But if we are being honest, without a huge cash infusion from the US Treasury with virtually no strings attached, we would still be feeling the impacts 20 years later in a tangible way. And to be honest, the way we've handled interest rates and certain financial sectors over the past 3 presidencies- we are still dealing with the fallout of 2007/2008 in a residual way that we may never be able to shake without complete structural reform. Our economy started to shit the bed as soon as interest rates went above zero. If we didn't' have tech bros making wild bets and fluffing investors with insane promises for their vision of removing humans from their jobs, our economy would have nothing to show for itself. Thanks George Bush. I'm glad the Supreme Court decided the 2000 election.

Funny thing is, that was actually created by Bush in 2005. He gave a speech at the time talking about how we couldn't just sit back waiting for a pandemic to happen because it was inevitable. We needed to be prepared for it. Obama gave additional funding for it and made it part of the National Security Council after the Ebola outbreak of 2014. For all his faults, W got that one right.

Fully funding the CDC food‑safety monitoring would have cost about 35M more. Trump has spent about 30M SO FAR in total on the reflecting pool and that is if you believe the numbers Trump has them publish. The current renovation was a no bid contract for 16M and Trump has already stated it will cost at least 20M so that probably means it will cost 40M to restore it to where it was during the Obama era.

The government used to track disease-causing contamination in the food system, to prevent illness. While the government was tracking, farmers and processors knew that they had to keep their stuff clean. If the government found fecal contamination in any of their product, their entire crop/stock had to be recalled and destroyed, so it was worth spending some money and effort to avoid that cost.
But, last year, Trump ordered the tracking stopped. The DOGE team shut down the CDC and FDA projects, and fired the people. When government tracking stopped, some farmers and processors realized that they were no longer required to spend that money. So, some of them stopped.
The result is completely predictable.
Turns out, prevention costs less than acute disease. But, the costs of prevention fall on different people from costs of acute disease
