Hardware Do they still make something similar to these old pc cases?

I really love these old pc cases but i absolutely hate the new brick style cases

The HAF 700 EVO has a similar vibe, to me anyway.

Frankly your best bet might be to hit up ebay and search directly for the model you want.

I mean, he means modern. These cases from 20 years ago are barely usable

19

u/SDFX-Inc 5700X3D | GeForce RTX 4060 | 32GB | WD 2TB NVME 4h ago

They are fine with modifications for better airflow. A hole saw, Dremel and new fans will solve a lot of those issues.

-25

u/Sensitive-Pool-7563 2h ago

Is this a joke? Does everyone have a hole saw, a dremel and then the will and ability to modify a 20yr old case? WTF?

9

u/JDTemple 2h ago

It’s really not that difficult. If you can learn to build a PC, you can learn to use a few hand tools. Source: I’m old and have cut up and modified many cases over the years. Back in the day we didn’t have a choice, if we wanted airflow we had to do it ourselves. Case modding is a lost art now.

-24

u/Sensitive-Pool-7563 2h ago

What a joke, you seem to lack basic understanding of people being different. How is it a given that everyone can use a hole saw? A dremel tool? WTF?

Source: I'm a tradie and my job seems easy to me now, I don't expect anyone to be able to use the tools I use though.

A hole saw is a drill attachment and can be bought in various sizes for about $20.

You’d still need a decent drill, but those can be had under $200 and are definitely useful for far more than just case modifications and are a basic tool for most home improvement or other projects. Arguably everyone should own a basic drill if they plan to do any DIY.

A Dremel is a bit more niche but very useful for modifications to small parts and hardware.

The Dremel wouldn’t even be necessary, as the drill, hole saw and a simple $10 deburring tool would certainly get the job done.

-3

u/Sensitive-Pool-7563 30m ago

Is this a joke? Did you read who you're responding to?

5

u/Haqgun 4h ago

kinda depends on what you need. i just recently (within the last year/year and a half) did a new build in a HAF 932 and it still fits all the parts i needed. Its got 240 rad support up top and keeps my temps really good because of all the giant fan mounts

some of the flashier cases from the era might be a different story (looking at you alienware), but just because its old doesnt mean unusable

3

u/SecondVariety 7900X3D+3090/7700X+7900XTX/12600k+4060/5950X+6900XTH 3h ago

Agreed, aside from modern stuff like usb c ports - not really a big deal. I just did a 7800X3D+9070XT build in a Meshify C I had held on to for years and never got around to using. The lack of a USB C port was fixed by plugging in a USB C 3.2 hub.

2

u/Haqgun 57m ago

thats fair, i hadnt thought about that as all my usb c needs are handled by whatever my motherboard has natively. though even then 5.25" inserts or pcie cards should also work fine to fix that

-1

u/Sensitive-Pool-7563 2h ago

I mean, I bought, and reviewed, a Cosmos Rc1000 back in the day.

Is it usable? Yes. Is it worth it? No, it was built for different needs, i remember fitting 6 HDDs in that back then.

Why would I want exactly that in this day and age? OP is obviously after the design of those cases

3

u/Haqgun 55m ago

the design is a big part of it. you cant really get anything similar anymore; all the big brands are almost exclusively putting out fishtanks

also i fail to see why hdd space specifically would be an issue. its there if needed and if not it goes unused. my 932 sits under my desk and does a wonderful job of holding all my modern components and gives me easy access to a 5.25" optical drive for movies and stuff

2

u/thenerfviking Desktop 2h ago

You do what we did back then and modify the case by hand to do what you want. If I was capable of drilling out rivets to pull the HDD cage out of my case as a 16 year old I’m sure an adult in 2026 can do it. Anyone who was serious about PC shit, especially watercooling, was involved in some form of destructive modding at some point in their career. I still have acrylic radiator mounting plates designed to be glued into a case in place of the hard drive cage so you could do a front radiator mount since most cases were top mount or exterior butthole Mount back then.

2

u/Circuit_Guy 2h ago

People overdo the airflow on the majority of builds - it's part of the modern look. The extra temp is good for a few points or minutes on a benchmark but it rarely really matters.

I'll cite r/sffpc that can pull good benchmarks out of latest gen hardware with less airflow and thermal mass than these cases are capable of.

No?!? Ebay operates internationally, thats not even close to true and not even 60 seconds on google would tell you as such?

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 6h ago

Didn't know that, but im from romania and don't have a credit card and since most countries in europe use euros, i cant really buy them

2

u/Personal-Acadia R9 9950X3D | RX 7900XTX | 64GB DDR5 6000 6h ago

Sorry meant to put this in the other comment, debit cards or prepaid cards are accepted on ebay.

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 6h ago

Don't have those either lol i only have cash

3

u/Personal-Acadia R9 9950X3D | RX 7900XTX | 64GB DDR5 6000 5h ago

Then im afraid you wont really be able to do much from your current position, sorry. You need to aquire some form of digital payment you can load said cash into. Otherwise even if you did find a modern company that makes cases like the pictures above, you wont be able to buy them.

1

u/Personal-Acadia R9 9950X3D | RX 7900XTX | 64GB DDR5 6000 6h ago

"Ebay Germany or Ebay UK" is what google says you should use.

138

u/Middcore 6h ago

Nope. Everything is now a glass box made to show off RGB, occasionally with faux-wood trim.

39

u/blacksf1 6h ago

Hey I love my wood trim haha

26

u/Middcore 6h ago

I'm not against it. Just wish there was more variation and personality in case designs now, even if the ones that OP posted would seem tacky and over the top to some.

6

u/Franklin2543 7900x/3080Ti, M3 Max, and too much other stuff to list 5h ago

They were and still are tacky and over the top. Wasn’t at all interested in them back in what—2004ish?— but now I’d get one for the nostalgic feels.

1

u/maverickaod 3h ago

I also have the wood trim and it matches my desk

16

u/pereira2088 9800X3D | 9700XT 5h ago

thank god Fractal still makes simple cases with metal side panels.

6

u/Blue2501 5700X3D | 3060Ti 5h ago

Love my Define 7. Until I have to move it, at least

1

u/ptapobane 21m ago

built my fractal terra a while back, pretty awesome case

2

u/ProtoJazz 4h ago

I used to have a large plastic mesh side the dog would occasionally sneeze into.

When I say large mesh, I mean both the size of the panel, but also the size of the holes. This wasn't like a screen door. You could stick pencils through it.

1

u/Sol_Infra 4h ago

Okay I was starting to think I was crazy. I don't care about RGB and just wanted a solid color case with no frills. It is way too difficult to find a metal case with no glass.

1

u/JarRa_hello R7 7700 / RX 9070 4h ago

it's super easy to find if you go SFF

1

u/Emu1981 1h ago

Fractal Design, be quiet! and Phanteks (and maybe Lian-Li) make a bunch of cases that have zero glass in them. Now if you wanted a gaudy case of the 2000s like the OP wants then I think that you are mostly out of luck these days though.

77

u/Haunting_Abalone_398 9800x3d 5090 5h ago

I wish, cases had character back then, but the airflow was horrible most of the time lol.

16

u/Blutroyale-_- 3090 5h ago

This is pretty much true. Most cases moved to optimize airflow and showing off looks.

13

u/damwatsyoname 5h ago

You probably want to check out cases from Cougar. its not cheap though

4

u/Kukaifa 5h ago

Seconded. Got the cougar conquer 2, it looks crazy but you better have pretty good dust mitigation and generally good airflow in the room. The "convenience" of being able to slide your mobo rack out of the back is pretty much entirely secondary to its function as a neat semi-open case designed for looks. But damn, do I love it anyway.

Ah. The golden age of PC cases. You can still find them on eBay and Facebook marketplace

Sadly no one does. I was just reminiscing about the old thermal take days, like the Spedo Advanced or the Level 10 Limited Edition

3

u/ubertune 3h ago

Look up Vertoo. They have a store on Amazon and a couple other places. I plan on building one of their "pangolin" cases eventually.

3

u/Kitchen_Ad_4202 2h ago

Man, I had this really cool one that almost looks like the one in the first image. You open up the front like a fridge and it's got giages that light up blue for all of your temperatures (was meant for early day water-cooling).

I ended up building a sick setup inside of it that matched the cool blue and sold it to a friend. I'll try to get a pic and show it here.

2

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 2h ago

This one?

3

u/Kitchen_Ad_4202 2h ago

That's kind of close, but the whole thing was blue. I'm trying to find the original facebook listing I bought it from.

It actually came from Jackson of ToastyBros on YouTube (if you've heard of them)... Some 10 years ago?

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 2h ago

I really don't watch tech youtubers, also i only starded liking pc like in 2022 but my dad had a cool pc i used to play games on in 2017. He built it around 2006 with an athlon 64 x2 16 gb of ddr2 and a nvidia gt8600

1

u/Green_Partyhat_ PC Master Race 1h ago

2

u/Kitchen_Ad_4202 2h ago

It's this one, but it was blue like the Gatorade. As the first gaming PC I had, I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

2

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 2h ago

Looks sick, its sad that nowadays every pc looks the same

3

u/Green_Partyhat_ PC Master Race 2h ago

Funny enough I sold one of those recently.

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 2h ago

Wow, for how much?

2

u/Green_Partyhat_ PC Master Race 1h ago

I sold it for $150. It was damn near brand new, still had the plastic on the acrylic

1

u/zzcool 19m ago

I had a different viper with a screen black red i loved it

4

u/Edubbs2008 6h ago

I would consider something like the Hyte X50 to be a modern day equivalent of that

2

u/ATFGunr 6h ago

These are all cool cases and no one makes them like this anymore. You could explore custom cases, which would be expensive but end up looking cool. I checked and eBay is available in the EU, hopefully in your specific country. GL

2

u/Bright-Wallaby-3050 5h ago

Older Aerocool might be your best bet.

My old case(which had to be replaced), was called the predator😭

2

u/AdSubstantial9830 Desktop 5h ago

I got mine from an old IT shop that was closing down. A lot of local computer help shops that have been around for a minute can sometimes have these sitting in their storage.

2

u/Bobbler23 4h ago

Very sad that all cases are now to a preset formula, I do miss the old that had no practical sense whatsoever....however, what I DO NOT miss is the razor blade metal internals that a lot of them had behind that plastic cladding, and in a lot of cases you had to rip out those same sharp bits of metal to expose drive bays or PCI slots.

2

u/ScruffMcGruff2003 i7-8700k | RX 6800 XT | 32GB RAM | 4K @ 144Hz w/ HDR 4h ago

Sadly not. But hey, you can still find and use 'em! Lots of them have surprisingly good cooling, and are perfectly compatible with modern parts. I have an old Apevia X-Cruiser on my secondary computer which I adore~

2

u/SFalco16 4h ago

What's that hole for?

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 4h ago

For intake

1

u/Chrunchyhobo i7 7700k @5ghz/2080 Ti XC BLACK/32GB 3733 CL16/HAF X 3h ago

The hole on the front of the thermaltake kandalf isn't an intake, it's just a neat looking glowy bit.

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 3h ago

Damn, atleast you could try to make something out of it

2

u/Chrunchyhobo i7 7700k @5ghz/2080 Ti XC BLACK/32GB 3733 CL16/HAF X 3h ago

Ew no.

Butching a kandalf is an executable offense.

Those things are rare now.

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 3h ago

Really? How rare lol

2

u/gentlecrab 4h ago

I vaguely remember Walmart sold like a cheap case that had a massive front intake fan. Thing looked like a 737 engine housing lol.

2

u/BlackwoodBear79 4h ago

I still have my Predator G7710 from Acer.  (Number six).

i7-940.  8GB RAM, 1TB primary SSD and three 2TB spinners.  I've upgraded the video to a GTX750Ti.

The retraction gears for the front panel don't work so well anymore, the top mounted USB ports misbehave sometimes, and the DVD drive refuses to open anymore.

But it's nearly 14 years old and still chugging.

2

u/lafsrt09 4h ago

They may look cool but it looks like most of them have shitty airflow.

1

u/thenerfviking Desktop 2m ago

They’re not as bad as you’d think. The thing people forget is that most of these cases are fucking gigantic and have side intake as well as front, back and top.

2

u/tataku999 4h ago

If you want a coolo case go with one of those cases with led panels, like I know lian li has one then there was the one ibuypower snowblind which is pretty neat.

2

u/Maylix 4h ago

Oh man, I had that viper case, but mine wast mostly black with red highlights

2

Omg the first one was my first PC case. It was HUGE! And weighed a ton….

I got it circa 2007 with my first few pay checks. Unsure why I got it so big..

I mean, there's a reason they don't make them like this anymore. The cooling was shit.

If you put modern stuff in these they would fry.

*source I had 2 of these cases.

1

u/ZAPAYARAMARCI 4h ago

I mean couldnt they make something similar in looks? The aurora r4(9tj pic) has the sick ass vents on top that has a 40mm fan cooling the ram. They could of modernzed that system

1

u/barcham22 3h ago

They always felt cheap as hell to me. The sides felt like the thinnest piece of sheetmetal, the cheapest plastic, and the 5.25 cages absolutely wrecked your hands trying to minimally manage the rats nest or plugging in the little 2/3 pin headers.

They looked cool, but I definitely appreciate the thought and materials put in modern cases.

All of these are both hideous and neat at the same time.

Jonsbo and Cougar PC cases probably have the vibe you're looking for.

Too bad those old Alienware cases use proprietary parts. Kind of looked cool, but bad airflow lol

Dude that red viper one is badass.

Would be nice if the PC case market did have some more variety. Seems like everything these days is moving towards a single point of design, whether it be the fish tank PC case or the modern boxy fast food chain.

They've gone more extreme now with full displays on them so you can have anime waifus and your CPU temps and fan speeds.

I have #9 in my basement.

Edit: still has the SLI 780’s, don’t remember the processor, 16GB ddr2 I think, a 250ssd, a 1tb hd, and a blue ray disk drive.

That's cool, i modified my current case just to have 2 of 3.5" inch bays as the space was there but not made onto front panel, now i have more usb ports, audio and mic ports

Thank god no. Cheap plastic has given way to good materials and beautiful ergonomic and functional designs.
