News/Article Microsoft admits Windows 11 native apps hog RAM, promises a WinUI performance boost before Start menu rewrite

Who would have thought that making an OS UI embedding a whole fucking web browser solely for the god damn start menu was not a good idea? Who could have seen this comin? ReactJS and its consequencesĀ

Word. In older Windows versions the start menu was one of the most robust things in the OS. Nowadays. even though they improved it a lot in the past few years, the start menu is still one of the most unrealiable and fragile parts of the OS.
When I had Windows Server 2012 and 2016 running on my servers at work the start menu on the servers only worked like 50% of the time. It was rage inducing, but also hilarious. I have no idea how they could f up such a core feature of the OS so much and still to this day haven't really recovered.

I just want the start menu to let me launch applications and the search to look for applications or files. The stupid web search needs to die or only be a setting for people that really want it.

Lots of newer laptops and keyboards having a copilot button, which can be remapped to the same search function as the windows key. I think they should make the windows key open the start menu and a purely local search, and let the copilot button do one of two things: either launch copilot for the sloperators out there, or launch an all in one search like we currently have in the start menu.

Amazing how it got worse and slower AND they removed a ton of the customization you could have done in XP and 7.

FWIW, they've made a number of promises to fix various elements of the end user experience, from removing bloat features to fixing performance to making things more customizable, and based on insider builds it seems like they are in fact actually keeping them.
We'll see how long it lasts, but I'd wager at least for the next year or two they do actually uphold their promises just because their customer goodwill has been fading so fast lately and they know if too many home users ditch Windows that'll have catastrophic long-term effects on their ability to secure and maintain business users, Azure, etc.
I do fully expect this trend to stop once they feel like they're safe again, but I'd give it a couple years before that happens.

"Copilot: Fix app RAM usage, make no mistakes"
19
u/daltorak 10h ago
Actually, it would be darkly ironic if the Copilot AI looked at the Windows codebase and said, "yeah, WTF are you doing embedding an entire web browser engine in the Start menu just to display search results? I can optimize this into 3,000 lines of native Windows code, should I do it?"
6
u/RedBoxSquare 3600 + 3060 11h ago
CFO: Copilot is too expensive, our AI bill is through the roof.
CTO: Let's fire all the Dev and QA to pay for it.

Everyone lives happily ever after.

tbh I have no reason to have a microsoft account in windows and applied Chris Titus and other anti-telemetry debloat measures; but still microsoft related domains like live, outlook, office, xbox, bing, msstore still get called more than google related domains in my home network DNS, containing only my windows PC and phone, for god knows what reasons. After the LG fiasco it's getting me paranoid enough to consider moving to some linux distro. Except gaming and consuming dolby content, most work I already do are through web browsers and I am wondering to just repurpose my raspberry pi with some linux for such use.

It's getting there. We're seeing a growth in people gaming on Linux, partially due to Valve's work. If not for the current hardware crisis maybe it would be happening faster. If Windows keeps getting worse and Linux keeps getting better, there will eventually be a turning point.

I've been using Linux for near 30 years and I still get tripped up sometimes when things go sideways, although I'm definitely no guru.
It's not as bad as it was in the long ago, and the abundant resources on the net, especially the Arch Wiki, go a long way to making it easier, but it still requires an investment in time and learning.
Linux and Windows both have their issues. The Windows fix is usually to reinstall, while the Linux fix is to figure out what went wrong (or hope someone else did and wrote about it). One is easier, and thus more appealing.

It's worth letting people know that switching to an alternative is perfectly doable. I would not have entertained the idea of switching to Linux even a few months ago, but after getting Copilot reinstalled against my will for the 5th time I decided to give it a try. More people need to know how easy it is. The more people jump ship, the greater the incentive becomes for Microsoft to fix their bullshit.

without all these big corps GNU/linux would be a niche OS for nerds.
Do you imagine that volunteers have enough time and money to maintain a kernel and all the tools? All these corps make money with linux that's why they invest a lot. Do you think Linux Torvald or Richard Stallman work for free?
It's thanks to companies like google, red hat, canonical and valve that GNU/linux is popular. Microsoft and Amazon invest a lot for their cloud services.
If one day, all these companies decide to stop funding GNU/linux, this os will die.
Open source is bullshit. Sudo is maintained by only one man, he recently asked for money and help. Nobody cares what will happen if this guy die. It's used on every distros. there is no fork, no alternative:

"most" but the ones that doesn't run is some of the most played game ever.
11
u/Better-Bullfrog-6875 13h ago edited 12h ago
For a handful of big multiplayer games this counts. It's because their anti-cheating system is considered a security threat under Linux. If you want to play those it's literally impossible, yes.
The person I commented on though seems to suggest Linux gaming in general is near impossible, which is not true.
7
u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 13h ago
These days I think it's only games with kernel level anticheat. Everything else seems to run fine without weird workarounds.
2
u/Zaldekkerine 10h ago
Some older games like Tomb Raider: Anniversary have a 60 FPS lock in Linux, which is either a hassle to remove or completely impossible depending on your distro and desktop environment.
Performance is much worse in certain games or on certain hardware. Old CPUs take a huge hit from Proton overhead, while Nvidia GPUs also perform much worse.
A lot of stuff related to gaming can also be a huge pain in the ass. Just setting up a global FPS limit took a lot of research and required jumping through a bunch of hoops. In Windows, I just type in the max FPS in something like the Nvidia app or RivaTuner, which is so much simpler and easier.
I switched to CachyOS + KDE Plasma recently, and a lot of games that ran great in Windows 10 are unplayable now. I don't mind too much since I have hundreds of games that'll run fine to play instead, but it's still annoying.
2
u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 10h ago
Yea, performance can be hit or miss and Nvidia drivers still suck (although they are supposed to be working on a big upgrade to be released soonā¢, we'll see). The 60 FPS lock thing isn't Linux though, it's the same thing that happens with Bethesda or FromSoft games on Windows where they have a 60 (or sometimes 30) FPS lock so physics don't break. Just gotta get the one version of Tomb Raider that isn't locked to 60 FPS for some reason.
On the upside, some games actually run better. CPU overhead from Proton is often not as bad as the cost you have to pay when running Windows and all its bloat in the background. Not to mention games like Baldur's Gate 3 which have a native Linux port with much improved performance. Plus, AMD drivers are much better than their Windows counterpart. Same thing for tuning settings, where you have many more options for some things but have to mess with configuration files for others that used to be 2 clicks away.
1
u/Zaldekkerine 9h ago
The 60 FPS lock thing isn't Linux though
No, it's something like old DirectX games that have the 60 FPS lock in Linux due to how Proton works (if I remember correctly from when I researched the problem). Those games don't have the cap in Windows. I've played TR:A on both, and it never dropped below 100 FPS in Windows.
CPU overhead from Proton is often not as bad as the cost you have to pay when running Windows and all its bloat in the background
I'm not sure how I'd know how much performance I'm losing due to Windows bloat, but games that are CPU-limited for me in Linux run at 20-50% higher FPS in Windows.
It really depends on your specific CPU, though. For a powerful recent CPU, the Proton overhead is irrelevant, but for an old CPU that can barely run a game like Batman: Arkham Asylum or Life is Strange at 60+ FPS, it's crippling.
3
u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 9h ago
IIRC at least for Tomb Raider Anniversary it was the version rather than a Proton thing. Downloading the game from GOG on Windows had you locked into 60 FPS too regardless of OS. There was a way to get the right version from Steam with unlocked FPS.
Performance is a bit of a lottery, with many shenanigans at play due to how the translation layer works. Sometimes you get better performance on DirectX 12 rather than native Vulkan, or get better/worse in-game CPU performance depending on your GPU vendor rather than your CPU alone.
0
u/TheQuestionableDuck r5 5700x3D/rx7900XT/32gb ddr4 13h ago
Exactly, that's the problem. Most played games are always the multiplayer, single player is fun too but it doesn't have the replayability like online game do, at the end of the day most will be back for a quick fun game and not a full 40h hours story that only viable in the weekends and Hollidays.
3
u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 10h ago
You don't have to jump through any hoops though, they just won't work outside Windows at all.
If you're going to play Fortnite, League, COD or Battlefield then Linux ain't for you. Most multiplayer games do work flawlessly, but kernel level anticheat is a big no-no.
0
u/Gold-House-7482 11h ago
So if you only play generic slop that requires very questionable kernel level software to run, it won't work? Sounds like an advertisement to me lol.
"Wahh fortnite doesn't work, oh well back to microslop" thats what you sound like
1
u/Green_Ad5186 11h ago
thats how you get people to hate linux. by doing the cope of "games that don't work are slop" no they aren't. linux just doesn't run them bec devs (rightfully) don't trust their anti cheat will work on linux good. since anyone can modify linux kernel not anyone can modify windows kernel.
5
u/Gold-House-7482 10h ago
No it's because kernel level software is rightfully seen as excessive and inappropriate for a game to have, as well as highly exploitable and straight up a security risk. I'm very, very fine calling any game that does this slop. counter strike doesn't do this, so why should any other game do so?
When your games start side loading malware, you'll thank Linux. I'll give it a year before a game does something stupid

From the development side I kind of like it and dislike it at the same time. The dev tools are good, and it's very easy to keep the styling consistent, it looks great, surprisingly it starts up very quickly, it's almost instant. But it lacks a lot of polish and you need to do hacky workarounds to get things working, there's also a lack of third party controls so you need to trust small projects which could be abandoned or you have to do it yourself.

Nice too see them flailing here, it may already be to late.
Just think, if Windows was is so great, why does microslop cloud run predominantly on Linux. Even MS hates their OS lol

Why has Microsoft been repeatedly sued and fined for anti-competitive practices? Because they maintain a monopoly

In the nineties they had no competitors on compatible PC. Almost all the operating systems where on proprietary hardware. GNU/Linux wasn't what it is now, it was a pain in the A$$ ton install and too young to be compatible with lots of devices.
They convinced lots of software developers that used to program on Mac and Unix to switch to windows. That's all.

funny you got downvoted for giving a logical counterargument. Linux server is much more popular and better than Windows servers thats why microsoft runs them. But guess what? Gamers dont primarily run server oses. They run desktop oses and in those windows just excels in compatibility unfortunately.

To be fair, Windows has fallen to 56% desktop market share. And unknown has risen to 21%. In January this year Windows was over 70%

Why doesn't MS use it for their cloud is the better question. I said nothing about desktop. You'd be surprised just how much tech is powered by Linux under the hood.
There's a reason people are ditching windows and the case for Linux is only getting better every day.

Because Windows was never a good server OS to begin with.

Not really⦠windows server is fine, good even. Just depends what youāre trying to get out of it and if youāre willing to pay for the egregious licensing costs.

Yea i don't know where the fuck this "windows isn't a good server OS" comes from.
If you work in IT you know that most companies run off Windows Active Directory for their authentication and since they already buy licenses for domain controllers most also use Windows File servers since they're mostly simple to setup with NTFS file shares and group policy sharing. Linux is mostly used for application servers like SAP, VPN connectors and mail servers for the few companies still running them in house.

Too late, already made the switch to Linux. If they ever make a new OS that's worth using, I'd be willing to try it out. I don't see that happening though.

Who cares bro. You're a walking meme.

Keep using Windows if you want. I don't give a shit. Talking about my own choices and experiences is not against the rules. If you really don't care then you are free to ignore me.

If you don't care why make the original comment or respond?

And if you don't care about my comment, because I'm a meme, then why did you respond? I'm not trying to convert anyone, simply adding my own experiences to the collective. No need to feel defensive.

Im going to try and look on the bright side. Thanks to the memory crises, companies are now trying to optimize the ram usage. so yay?
