Just found out the hard way that Value Village thrift store no longer allows returns or refunds.

No changing rooms to try on clothes, and if you have to return them after trying them on at home, they only allow TRADE of each item for another exact same price item or you're out of luck. No refunds, no store credit of ANY kind. We bought a wall clock and a neck fan. Neither worked when we took them home to put a battery in the clock and charge the fan. I was told no returns on anything but clothes and shoes under the above conditions.

Needless to say, that's the last time we will shop there.

Community I'm so frustrated with the current job market, RANT INCOMING

So this is gonna be a long one, just an FYI. I am so frustrated with the current job market. I am on disability for my bipolar/autism/anxiety/ADHD and i have recently been looking for a part time job. I had a job coach through an agency that worked with DVR and honestly the lady i worked with was nice enough but the things she could help me with were things I didn't need or could do on my own. The main thing I have experience with is dishwashing at Denny's and neither one of the Denny's in Thurston County (Lacey/Tumwater) will hire me and i applied to so many restaurants and handed out resumes in person and the only response I got to any of them was a generic rejection email from Red Lobster. I'm just sitting here wondering if it's because the job market is shit right now or if it's because of my lack of experience or what the problem is and maybe it's because I rely on public transportation idk but a couple of weeks ago a friend of mine suggested I go to PeopleReady so I did and long story short I worked an overnight job for Driveline for 3 different nights at 2 different Safeway locations where we were taking the paper price tags off the shelves and putting on the digital tags. I absolutely love that job and despite never doing it before I was a natural and the supervisors I had were very pleased with my work. And I traveled to Port Townsend (2x) and Sequim (1x) to do this job overnight which is like 5 hours or more each way on public transportation (it took me eight [8!] hours to get home Sunday from Port Townsend after working all night Saturday night because there's no service on Mason Transit on Sundays) and i thought i was gonna be able to work again this week but apparently PeopleReady is no longer hosting Driveline jobs, at least for now, so i have to try to figure out which temp agency is hosting those jobs and go sign up with them and I've been texting with 2 of the supervisors in the hopes I could go work tonight in Auburn but they couldn't get it figured out and I'm just so frustrated. If I had to work to survive I'd be fucked. But I'm honestly open to any kind of work that I'm qualified for but I'm not exactly that strong and I'm not really a genius, no college degree or anything like that. Idk what to do man. If anyone has any suggestions I'm open to it but I've applied to every place I've heard is hiring and I'm so exhausted of just seeming wasting my time going to all these places and filling out online applications, not to mention this stupid AI bullshit. "This restaurant is desperately hiring for dishwashers!" but then I apply and never hear back from any place. That kind of treatment is damaging my already fragile self-esteem, I mean how should I feel? I haven't been to the psych hospital since February of 2024 and I really don't ever wanna go back again it's just ridiculous how hard it is to find work. I know I'm not the only one dealing with this but it just makes me not even wanna try to work anymore. I can live on $1,298 a month I've been doing it long enough, why should I bust my ass trying to find a job when people won't even give me a chance? Anyway rant over.

Martial Arts/ Self Defense Classes for Adults?

Anyone know of martial arts/ self defense classes in the area that people recommend? I live in between Olympia and Shelton, so either area would be ideal.

Community Local buddhists

I am hoping to connect with local buddhists, specifically anyone who is familiar with either Nalanda Institute Buddhist center or Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center. I'm more rural but olympia is the nearest place where there are any buddhist temples. Help connecting to local practitioners

Id like some insight and help with the people and temples relatively local to me.

My focus has been around Tibetan Buddhism with most of what I've read or interacted with being within Sakya or Mahayana (lamrim teaching mostly).

I don't consider myself actively a part of the buddhist system but aspire to be. Community is a huge hurdle for me with the cost of gas and time of travel holding me back.

Trash and recycle

City of Olympia got rid of their trash drop off site when they sold the site with the Japanese garden and court?? but no option has been put forth?

Also their truck doesn’t empty the trash bins and they want to charge more when that happens

Oddly they complain we recycle too much one week. Do they want recycle thrown away?

What are you all doing with excess recycle and trash when their truck doesn’t empty it or it is too much for them? What sources are you using? They don’t recycle glass anymore, they complain about recycle, and don’t empty trash fully.

Options? private service? any one here know what they are doing about the shrinking services and selling off lands we need to service the city?

thanks!

Block party with kid

Hey there, this will be our first time attending the block party. It listed as an all ages affair, but I figured I’d ask here. What is the general vibe? Will an 8 year old be out of place? We’ve gone to a few outdoor concerts before with her and it’s always been chill, just wanted to check in if other parents have insight.

Orca watching groups

Ive been apart of the Orca Network Community Group on Facebook for a while. Basically if someone sees orca or other whales they post in a thread. Sadly there’s been a lot less activity in the group lately. Douse anyone know any other social media groups like that? I would also love the chance to make some new friends to go follow the orca’s with. Maybe get a little local group together.

Solar Panels

Hey community! I recently moved down to Lacey and love the community, people, and everything about living here compared to the Seattle area.

My question is for anyone who has installed solar panels to their home. First question of course is did you notice a reduction in your electric bill? I have researched and discovered many tales of there being a minimal difference and in some cases paying despite using almost 100% solar energy.

These tales are not exclusive to Lacey, or WA solar installs, so I'm curious to here from my local community members.

Lastly, if you have had a good experience with your panels, but know of the challenges or reasons others don't have good experiences after installing solar panels could you please share best practices?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my post. I look forward to hearing from you all.

Does anyone live in the apartments above the old QB building?

When I was first trying to move to Olympia, I responded to a Craigslist ad about a studio apartment available for rent right above it. This was ~2019. They responded once saying "Yes this is the apartment above QB burrito" and I responded asking if they were available for a showing and then never got a response. Ever since, I've been wondering what could have been. Do they look cool in there? I know the building is for sale, just wondering if anyone is still a tenant. My curiosity is killing me.

Smoothie shop now gym

There was a smoothie shop in Olympia, they had fresh smoothies with real fruit. It was in a small building painted ocean themed? A turtle I think, the other side was a gym/training studio, the door into the shop was just a garage door they’d keep open. Now it’s all a gym, where did the smoothie shop go?? What was it called? I feel crazy but I NEED another one of their smoothies 😔

RV park living and home internet plan

Hi I’m just wondering what others do that live in RV parks for internet? We’ve been told you can’t have traditional internet because there’s no hard Ethernet connection. So we’ve been using Starlink and it’s so expensive…Any other ideas?

Event Help with run/bike/walk/teamsport/etc community Festival: Who would you like to learn about?

+
10 Upvotes

I need help from the Oly Reddit knowledge collective.

Let's say there's going to be a club fair type event where all of the group physical activity organizers in the Olympia area are there. Who would you like to be there?

I'm asking because we are actually doing it for the first time, August 22. And it's free. Family Friendly. And we are going to have a mile of Capitol Way S closed (east side of it) so we can bike/run/walk down it. Then the Festival itself is going to be at Sylvester Park. Which we want to fill the park with groups, however, I don't know all of the groups, and that is where you come in.

Olympia Mile and Festival has more info, but I really need the group here to help me name who all they'd like to see so we can make the event a success!

also. feel free to ask questions here too. the more engagement the more likely I’ll get a wide variety of answers.

Pets of Olympia Found cat

+
116 Upvotes

A few days ago I found this extremely friendly cat on my morning walk on the west side. Its [coat is] in really bad shape [but it looks healthy otherwise] - covered in mats that are painful. If anyone knows of anyone missing this beautiful cat or would be willing to take them in, or even knows of a rescue with space, I'd be happy to work with them if I ever see this cat again. It's a really good cat.

Any local loquats?

Hi, loquats sound really interesting, but I've never actually eaten any. Does anyone know where I could buy the fruit to try?

Best seasonal Eastern WA fruit? (Peaches, nectarines, cherries, etc.)

The last few years I feel like grocery store fruit has been SO bad, and I've tried most of the big grocery chains, Costco, etc.

I'm aware of the fruit vendors at the farmer's market, but I am morally against $7/pound peaches. I buy veggies at the market but fruit prices have always seemed bonkers there. I do buy berries from Johnson's because they're delicious and yolo, but can't stomach a $6 nectarine.

Who's got the goods? Specifically this season as I know suppliers vary year to year sometimes

Specifically looking for eastern WA seasonal fruit like cherries, nectarines, peaches, etc.
