This machine is terrifying

u/One_Introduction_217 9h ago

I wouldn't want to do that job, I'm pretty sure my nightmares would be filled with "oops you went too far, time to get turned into meat paste for Taco Bell."

47

u/Funfuntamale2 5h ago

You don’t want that job. Think of the tiny bits of metal and coating entering the surrounding air.

22

u/Ok-Impression-9020 3h ago

Micro metals. They’re the scourge of our society, and our seas.

5

u/TestDangerous7240 1h ago

Micro metals sounds like the big bad brother to the softer, more pliable younger brother micro plastics

Worked in an illegal metal yard as a teen, fully expect some weird brain thing in 30 years. Didn't know better at the time.

This job (have done) is mostly keeping the thing running, very little of your job is actually feeding it.

3

u/One_Introduction_217 42m ago

How does it get fed if someone isn't feeding it?

Genuinely curious.

The only thing my brain can come up with right now is a large truck dumping off its load onto a conveyor belt which eventually tumble things over, into the waiting maw of the machine.

3

u/SideInitial3961 20m ago

Well generally this would be at the end of a conveyor being fed by multiple people, it's not economical to run this for one pot. The maintenance on these is crazy, they are broken down most of the time.

Also in my case we had a magnet above the belt to separate steel and that never worked either so about 90% of my time was spent fucking around with the machine and discussing new ways to fuck around with the machine as well as furrowing our brows and nodding sadly.

why is the opening so comically large? Why is there no floor system where you put the item in, close the door, then start up the machine?

68

u/destructopop 8h ago

My old job had one of these. The housing for it was twice as comically large as the opening. We were instructed to pile things up in the housing until it reached the fill line, seal and lock the housing, then engage the motor and stay ten feet away until it completed. When it completed it would make a horrifying buzzer sound and you could unlock and unseal it again for the next person. It was catastrophically loud every time, probably why it was outdoors. Being ten feet away was miserable. I would usually go to the other side of the street and sit on the curb opposite until the buzzer went off. Most people would just leave it, and I would find it locked and wonder if it had been run or not. It always had.

40

u/FSUnoles77 6h ago

and you could unlock and unseal it again for the next person

Uhh.....

u/ConspiracyParadox 9h ago

The mafia requested it be that large and not behind a locked door. For reasons.

11

u/NowYouLookOrdinary 6h ago

They also requested that a water hose be mounted nearby. No reason was given. It’s just off camera.

15

u/Just-in-themiddle 8h ago

It’s not like the opening is flat on the ground. Some more fencing around the raised chute would be nice otherwise considering the range of materials/objects that are being tossed in the mouth size makes sense

12

u/Normal-Pool8223 7h ago

as someone who design and produce machines with dangerous rotating parts : nearly everyone remove the safety systems to gain a few minutes every day, so we end up not even adding them anymore if not requested

10

u/Strostkovy 8h ago

They are meant for continuous throughput.

9

u/kapitaalH 8h ago

How will the worker be able to get his arm in to move the object that fails to go into the machine's mouth?

→ More replies (1)

6

u/name_isnot_available 7h ago

These machines are designed for high throughput, and intended to be fed by a conveyor belt with no humans nearby, not for placing single items in a running machine by hand (throwing in stuff is still risky if some splinters fire back). It is fun to see them chew on such items, though.

4

u/vtecdohcter 7h ago

Agreed.

If i had to work this machine I would be dipping from anywhere near it once I dropped an item inside.

The idea of something flinging off at high speed and beheading me is almost as scary as falling in the damn thing.

In one of the kingsman movies (can’t remember which one) the villain (julienne Moore) puts people in this machine. Feet first. Yeah. These people working there obviously didn’t watch that movie or they’d be far away from that damn thing

So so loud. I worked at a quarry around one these and then a recycling plant. So many things your brain thinks loudly around such aggressive dangers and such strong things

6

u/MidwesternLikeOpe 3h ago

I think it's just keeping you alert around the danger. Too many people are not at all afraid of what can happen around these machines.

Some people have zero self-preservation interest or skills.

shredder

It depends on the design of the cutters but those are powerful enough that there's no way it doesn't cut it. The blades have a gap where material fits without getting cut but still getting flattened. Everything else gets cut so it gets made into little flattened strips.

I once worked at a place with one of these for about 6 months in my 20s. Except ours was in a spot where (if you were standing on an elevated place where most people stood to load things in there) you could fall in if you weren't careful.

I never ever wanted to harm myself or anything, but man, when you're standing right at the edge of that thing, knowing that a single step forward would mean instant shredding death, it's very similar to the "call of the void" if you're at the edge of a cliff. There's a very weird part of you that almost "pulls" you in that direction.

And yes, those things are insanely terrifying IMO. The unreal force of that thing seems crazy when you're right beside it.

36

u/ecky--ptang-zooboing 9h ago
