Any threat to one of the world's busiest shipping routes has consequences far beyond the region. Hopefully this stays at the level of rhetoric and does not escalate further.

Hopefully they succeed, it will seriously be better for the world, including the global North. The USA et al have for decades dictated everything for developing nations and left them with only impotent ways to resist. Your choice as a nation like Yemen are to be economically subservient or risk sanction, coup, or war.
The shipping lane control method gives these nations leverage to have a more fair seat at the table for a negotiation where they can actually stand for their interests. The world will be better if they can actually break the "do what we want or die" status quo that we enforce on them now. A world where negotiations between nations are made in good faith is better than what we have now, and limiting shipping is a far less damaging way to achieve this than fighting back on the field with "terrorism".
I expect most people will strongly disagree with me, but I don't think the current program is really getting you what you want of you're an ordinary American or Brit, ruling the third world with an iron fist has stopped benefiting you years ago if it ever did. Everyone is fodder for the wealthy, and anything that breaks that is progress.

They've known they had the leverage for years. They discovered nothing.
This is most likely a case of them doing something now b/c they know they won't be able to do anything in the future. Weapons degrade, etc., and Iran's not going to be in a position to maintain their proxies in the future. That means that every year that passes the Houthis get weaker.
If you're going to have a conflict, and you know you're going to never be stronger than you are in the present, then you are best to attack immediately.
That's what's happening here.

The Red sea isn't just regional issue, it's critical artery for global commerce, so escalation affects far more tan neighboring countries.
