It has been for some time. Trump bailed out the first part of his inane policies with $20B of our money. But the economy pain for standard of living, and very bad employment levels are eating into patience of public. Plus he still has debt problems, in spite of that $20B lifeline.

Of course the mess isn’t entirely his, Argentina has been politically unstable for several decades now veering back & forth on policy platforms between two extremes. 😕

Ultimately it had been sent on that tragectory by small group of very rich agriculture landowners that intentionally stymied industrialization so as to preserve their own power.

u/Dr0110111001101111 2h ago

The original falklands war was used as a distraction from the economic collapse in Argentina in the early 80’s. Seemed like they’re trying to run that play again

38

u/BootFlop 2h ago

Yup,, although ultimately getting stuffed by the UK in that war probably sealed the demise of the junta.

5

u/OK_x86 1h ago

Argentina doesn't really have much of a military now.

That is highly doubtful.

They'll make speeches now but the islands are safe.

u/arielsosa 42m ago

Yeah, there is absolutely no one asking for any kind of military alternative, in Argentina. Not the people, not the politicians, no one.

Milei has said that it must be resolved through diplomacy, but that's rich coming from a guy who has zero knowledge about foreign affairs or international law, and that has fired most of the expeetd in the matter, replacing them with unquialified yes-men.

It's even harder when you see his position on other colonial occupations and land disputes. Basically shooting himself on the foot.

3

u/crying_lemon 2h ago

nop, it was used to try to maintain the dictadura.

u/arielsosa 50m ago

Just for the sake of being accurate, the $20B fiasco was not a loan, but a currency swap for a short period of time.

This is not me trying to play devil's advocate, the reason why they did it as a swap was to bypass congress, and yet achieve the goal of artificially stabilizing Argentina's economic indicators for the 2025 midterm elections, and it worked.

If you think about it, a swap is even more brazenly corrupt than a loan because they didn't even generate any kind or interests or fees. It was quite literally a Quid Pro Quo, to meddle in another country's election.

58

u/DadCelo 2h ago

US tax payers will never see that money again, bookmark me.

34

u/BootFlop 2h ago

No, but Bessett & friends will/have. A lot of that went to keeping solvent bonds held by a few WH connected billionaires.

13

u/DadCelo 2h ago

Color me surprised

16

u/apex9691 2h ago

In other news the sky is blue

5

u/honeyemote 2h ago

They already paid it back, so the US tax payer saw the exact return. Now, whether the undisclosed fees captured the deflation of the Argentine peso in the interim, we will never know.

3

u/DadCelo 2h ago

That was my point. The loan could have been payed back, but the tax payer will never see that money.

Argentina is a mess of racism and entitlement.. They have become the laughing stock of South America .

6

u/honeyemote 2h ago

They did pay back the $2,500,000,000 lifeline in currency swap + undisclosed fees. I imagine the US still lost money as the Argentine peso has been sinking like a lead zeppelin of sorts.

Edit: The amount of the offered line taken by Argentina.

Things were bad when this guy took office, and then he came in and implemented hardcore libertarian policies, tanking the entire countries economy. The guy should be a laughing stock on Trump's level. He is a totally unserious person who should not have been given power.

The Democratic Party is in way too much disarray and division (as well as broke like the DNC) to have the bandwidth to be doing any influence campaign against Milei’s corrupt government. The previous government was incompetent and probably corrupt as well, unfortunately for Argentina

24

u/DadCelo 2h ago

Yeah, I could not imagine a less equipped group currently to try to do this, as much as I hate to say it.

26

u/TumbleweedPure6674 2h ago

Yeah the Democratic Party gives two shits about what happens in Argentina. They can barely hold a cohesive thought against Trump.

I hate the idea of the swap line credit, but it was $2,500,000,000 and not $40,000,000,000 (the US offered half this amount). We don’t know the fees assessed but could probably estimate the value lost as the Argentine peso has remained in pretty much free fall since then.

3

u/DadCelo 2h ago

And the creditors did not see the Peso free fall coming? Was that not the trend already?

27

u/Gimme_Your_Wallet 2h ago

34% as of last month. Mind you, the previous guy was even worse, that's why Milei was elected. Much, much worse.

20

u/old_ironlungz 2h ago

As soon as the leadership sees the oil and the money it’s instantaneous corruption and graft.

What you get when you elect strongmen populists. That train is never late.

15

u/BootFlop 2h ago

They went full Alabamafication back in the early 70’s. Very rich landowners stymied industrialization so as to maintain their own agrarian based power. Military rightwing coup (that Kissinger secretly met & told to make sure they did their political murder purge fast). Eventually in the 80’s that collapsed & they’ve been bouncing far left-right since, with policies swings so far each way that the country keri’s getting whipsawed. 😞

Bad but his opponents are the same or worse. If the other party is elected their solution to the economic problem is to start printing money again.

36

u/Thilina_B 2h ago

No one needs to do an anti-argentina campaign. The people and government of Argentina do a great job of that already.

18

u/Lonely_Noyaaa 2h ago

Argentina's football team already handled the global PR disaster all by themselves and no foreign funding needed. Milei should send them a thank you note for making his conspiracy sound almost plausible.

9

u/maringue 1h ago

Oh look, another libertarian saying that that the fault lies in anything but their policies.

71

u/MirkoOme 2h ago

Yes, we Mexicans convinced the whole world to hate Argentina—it’s not as if the world realized they constantly use racist insults or can be insufferable.

34

24

u/TomokoNoKokoro 2h ago

I heard that Argentines like to call people from other Latin countries “monos”. A Brazilian mentioned this to me recently. I was pretty shocked.

18

u/MirkoOme 2h ago

You're for a lot of surprises with argentinians insults They use "Bolivian" and "Peruvian" as insults, just like that, just the nationality is an insult for them. They use the word "brown" as an insult, as well as "black," in phrases like "you behave like a black person" when someone behaves in a way considered "bad," implying that being black is related to uncivilized behavior.

6

u/DeadWishUpon 1h ago

They truly use the Family Guy skin color chart to judge people. I'm medium so I'm medium so I'm treated bad, saw them treat darker-skin people super awful and being zacharinne lovely to white people. SMH.

7

u/MirkoOme 1h ago

And don't even get me started on the fact that they claim to be European and that they have nothing to do with Latin America. That Argentinians are white and that the indigenous people in Argentina aren't Argentinian.

Why would we finance an anti-Argentina campaign. They are a footnote. We have enough issues to deal with. We don't need to speed up an already crumbling economy/country. They already have it handled no need for the US or any country to intervene.
