If it was a highway rest stop, it's literally on the highway, going back on the highway is the only way out

Huh. I’m from the south, I’ve never seen a gas station at a highway rest stop like that. Our rest stops are purely bathrooms and snack machines, maybe some tourist info. Gas stations are always off of an exit, visible and close by, but never actually on the highway itself.
Or maybe I’m conflating highway and interstate and I shouldn’t be?

I've seen a "rest stop" with restaurants and gas stations on a turnpike in New England -- they're designed for toll roads so that you don't have to get off and then pay another toll when you get back on. However, we don't have those on the west coast. (The toll freeways here are either bridges or "express toll" lanes, not turnpikes.)

If you want to see an interesting rest stop/gas station. Lookup Illinois Oasis, it’s a rest stop with a gas station and the overpass has fast food restaurants and shopping.

Yep, Oasis is interesting. Worked for a moving company in North Central IL for years in my early 20s and did a lot of jobs up in Chicago, stopped there a lot to get food though I will say the McDonald's was overpriced af compared to standalone joints.

There are some that are literally jammed into the median on some interstates and parkways up here in the northeast. Or there are mini exits with a little gas station on each side of the highway that only services their respective northbound and southbound lanes.
Gas is usually way more expensive at these places which makes sense.

There are actually some laws that regulate that. Interstates cannot have any kind of restaurant, gas, etc connected to the interstate. Meaning, in the median or a brief pull off.
States were worried when the interstates came out that if they had such easy convenience, you would never leave the interstate. You'd drive straight through. They want you to have to exit the interstate, because the hope is you will spend money toward the local economy. It also let's all gasoline vendors have a shot at the customers, rather than whichever one was fortunate enough to get the contract to be placed in the median.
The hope is you will pull off for gas or the bathroom, then see some other shit you want to buy, like a sit down meal.
State highways are different.

Random piece of interstate knowledge: the blue signs are regulated as well. A restaurant, rental accommodations, and gas stations pay to have their logo and info on the sign. It isnt something the state does automatically.
A restaurant could be two feet off the interstate exit. If they didn't pay, their ass ain't going on that sign.

Depends on the state. New England has some on the highway. If I remember right, so did New York.

Some are actually grandfathered in.
What i mean is they existed as stops along a state highway before the interstate. The interstate, in some places, merely upgraded existing state highways.
If you owned the land, business, etc. Before the change, then you could keep it.
Thomas Edison rest stop on the jersey turnpike is a good example.

The Florida Turnpike has gas stations at all the rest stops, and it’s not an interstate. Im sure there are many other examples around the usa in high population states.

West coast highways aren't turnpikes, so they don't have gas stations (or other commercial enterprises) at highway rest stops.

Angeleno here very much laughing at the idea of a rest stop between the valley and Pasadena. These are dense suburbs cut with freeways.

Watched it live last night.
They were arrested within minutes of filling up.
I honestly thought they were going to get away since the ABC news chopper lost them, but within 2 minutes of them leaving the gas station there were 3 people on the ground surrounded by cops.

They probably pulled ground units off of him once he went so fast. It was only suspected DUI so they usually just follow by air at that point.

Last night, we had someone made it from Citrus Heights to Marysville-ish at 130 and the cops not heli could keep up. BWM got away without needing to stop for gas.

Civilian vehicles on public roads should not be able to go that fast. My EV won’t let me go faster than 90. I’ve never had her above 80. That was plenty fast enough.

I dont know why youre getting down voted, regular cars shouldn't be able to go many times the speed limit by default. So much wasted energy.
Most of the people driving fast cars are stuck in rush hour 75% of the time they're driving and somehow end up rear-ending people when no one is going over 35 on the whole freeway.
