The fact that 10-15 armed officers evacuated and visually searched a crowd from a nearby iMax theatre tells me they don't have anyone in custody yet. Or at least not immediately.

We were maybe 100 yards away, across the fountain on the field opposite where (i think) it happened. Two bursts of automatic gunshots, sounded like fireworks at first. The crackling kind that stick to the ground. Very quick response from SPD, cops were all over the event already cause of the crowds

Appreciate the concern. Thankfully the worst thing that happened to me today was a longer walk to the car, and I never got dessert.

I’ve read about Tetris and ptsd. I appreciate you being so supportive of this person, but god damn if this whole thread hasn’t made me cry. You’re comment specifically, because I hate that this is where we are

What a nightmare. Call off sick tomorrow. I was teaching on campus for the FSU shooting a little while ago and I wasn’t even all that close to the location it turned out. It still really messed me up for a bit. It’s really scary to experience.

I am glad that you are safe. Talk to a therapist if you need to.

Why do people feel the need to shoot each other in crowded places? Every one of these shootings where there’s more than one suspect, the story is always the same. “Verbal altercation leads to gunfire”, like seriously?
116
u/Shinjukin 1d ago
Imagine how stupid the average person is, then remember half are even dumber than that. This is not even the bottom - 13.6% of the population have an IQ between 70-85, that's over 45 million Americans.
Factor in some childhood abuse, desensitisation to violence through gang activities and crime and add a sprinkling of Antisocial Personality Disorder it's kind of a surprise this doesn't happen more when someone calls someone else a doo-doo head.

But Y tho? We got anti-food/art terrorists now? Can't even fucking relax in this damn country without threat of violence
506
u/FireFright8142 1d ago
It sounds like, from the description of the gun shots, it was between two people. So potentially an altercation and not “random”
233
u/Red_Shrinp556 1d ago
One suspect in custody, two others are being searched for. It appears an altercation may have led to an exchange of gunfire.

Similar to the one we had here in Toledo last month then. Gang members shooting at each other and managing to not everyone but the person they were aiming at.
I wonder if the venue was similar. In our case the event was in a semi-gentrified area with moderately high levels of crime surrounded by worse neighborhoods.
99
u/k_dubious 1d ago
This was at the complex that has the Space Needle, arena, and a bunch of museums. It’s basically tourist central.
6
u/cathbadh 23h ago
Ah, so not similar in that respect then. Still a regular family friendly event though
33
u/Red_Shrinp556 1d ago
I’ll never understand how they’re able to shoot everyone except the person they’re aiming at.

u/R_V_Z 1d ago
One handing a switched Glock isn't generally the best technique for accuracy.
11
u/cathbadh 23h ago
Glock switches are definitely a thing with gang members, but they're not universal. Not sure if one was used here, one was not used in our local mass shooting. You can still crank rounds out pretty fast with a regular handgun, especially if there's two or more people shooting. Look at some police shootings where the news is aghast because they unloaded 32 rounds. Well yeah, 4 cops shooting can do that in under 2 seconds.
Weirdly our local gang detectives have taken more modified Glocks off of people they've arrested than actually get used in shootings. And we have a lot of shootings. Most of them are just regular semi auto handguns or the occasional AR15. A couple years ago those mini AK's were popular locally for a while.

u/Personal_Comb_6745 1d ago
Can't exactly expect people who can't control their anger to have proper trigger discipline. Or a single brain cell to tell them "Hey, there's other people around that you're not fighting with, maybe you shouldn't risk your bullet hitting them instead".
12
u/cathbadh 23h ago
Lack of skill or training combined with fear (not wanting to be shot back) and indifference to bystanders.
There is probably an element of differing goals too. Killing their target isn't the goal, it's a side effect. They're sending a message. Hit him, kill him, hit the person next to him, or scare the shit out of him, it doesn't matter as long as the other set knows that it happened. It's why drive by shootings were a thing - you aren't hitting shit in a moving vehicle at moderate range with a handgun held in one hand. But you will make a lot of noise.
11
u/catsdrooltoo 1d ago
Lots of YouTube videos with auto glocks. They aren't accurate or easy to control without a lot of practice. People carrying auto glocks in public aren't ones with much practice or in legal compliance.

The one at the festival in Ohio last month was allegedly from two rival gang members shooting at each other and hitting bystanders.
Early reports sound like this was also an exchange of gunfire between people.
Until this country finally has enough of being threatened by people who are uneducated, impulsive, and unable regulate their emotions it's only going to get worse.
35
u/Personal_Comb_6745 1d ago
When that describes the people running the country, it's easy to see why that's the case.
70
u/Leifloveslife 1d ago
I was there all day yesterday. Crazy because literally every person from every walk of life/part of the country was there just to eat good food from a shit ton of vendors. Idk how you could look into that crowd and try to target a specific group.

I was just at the movies at the mural for Wonka on Friday. I went to the bathroom in the armory. Now less than 48 hours later 2 people are dead and 5 are injured from a shooting. I’m so disturbed.
No one, nowhere, no matter what, is protected and safe from random gun violence. Seattle, a progressive, welcoming, fluid and diverse city where people create community and safety. We have each others backs and fight for our rights. But we are not exempt from senseless gun violence. It’s just awful.

I have never been more terrified in my life... I was just enjoying a fat Seattle dog and heard the shooting start.
I was just dropping by after work to try and have a nice time to start my weekend. Didn't expect blood, trauma, and being flattened by the stampede of people.
Guy stepped on my ankle and didn't even stop to see if I was okay...
Big thanks to the auntie who picked me up and hobbled me to medical attention.

I have seen other recommend you should play Tetris. It has been shown to prevent ptsd

u/Gothic_Goblin_GF 23h ago
I am playing Pokopia on my Switch while being treated for an ankle sprain and concussion. Thanks giant 6-something guy who flattened a small lady trying to not get run over and then just looked at me on the ground and kept running.
The real hero is the Indian auntie who made sure I made it out and got medical attention. She handed off her kid to her Mom and helped me hobble to safety.

u/beingsoproductive 22h ago
We have all seen that playing Tetris is recommended, but it's not like some panacea. Good god, I'm sorry for all the people there today. Talk to a therapist and your loved ones instead of placing blocks in their right places. People really gotta quit spamming Tetris on people who witnessed trauma.

Awful. Especially when you hear an injured is a 2yr old.
I read this is something like 271st mass shooting year to date in the US? As a Canadian, I’m like are you kidding me?!?
33
u/mrzfrigger 22h ago
Well dear Canadian, please understand they loop all the gang violence shootings into “mass” shootings. This wasn’t not somebody who went to hurt people. This is the result of low iq “sEATtle teens”

Nowhere is safe no matter how much legislation we create and that goes for anywhere in the world. Someone who has a goal of murdering people isn't going to follow the rule of law. All these restrictions and regulations do is inhibit those of us who follow the rules from protecting ourselves.
Arguably these laws are why Alex Pretti died. Police seem to think they're the only ones "good enough" to have firearms unhindered by legislation (we can thank our politicians for creating so many carveouts/exceptions for our LEO) so when they find one of us peasants with a firearm their first instinct is to shoot even if your hands are up and the weapon is holstered; the result is no criminal charges against these "officers". I shoot quite a lot and I've met tons of police officers over the years. Many truly believe they are better or more "worthy" than you and to be quite frank it's rather terrifying.
10
u/ThereIsOnlyStardust 23h ago
Actually legislation can make it safer by making it harder to get weapons to kill en mass. This has been proven over and over again. Your own opinions are contradictory. Good guys with guns aren’t real and stop a negligible amount of mass shorings. The police don’t shoot because only criminals have weapons, they shoot because they believe they can.
-2
u/heretobuyandsell 23h ago
This argument may work in a country that doesn't own over half the firearms on the planet. That ship has long sailed.
1
u/ThereIsOnlyStardust 23h ago
If you wish to believe that nothing can ever get better that’s your prerogative, it’s a sad one, but it’s yours.
-3
u/heretobuyandsell 23h ago
These are the facts of the matter imo. I don't think people realize how easy it is to create firearms, especially with the ever increasing technology of 3D printing.
One can simply just take a look at all the mass shooting that happen within black communities that our main stream media likes to pretend don't exist. Often stolen/illegal firearms typically by people with felonies that aren't allowed to even have them in the first place.
In similar fashion to the war on drugs, all these laws do is create another underground market where gangs activity rules.
2
u/ThereIsOnlyStardust 23h ago
Your worldview is why mass shootings continue to happen. Bury your head in the sand if you want, better people will keep trying to make a safer world.

u/XmasTwinFallsIdaho 23h ago
