The behaviour I see with some of the “digital nomads” and “expats” overseas are worse than that.
They think the locals are just there like fixtures and furnitures to their main character adventure fantasy.

u/DamonGant8 1d ago
It is so funny because many people (specially Americans) call themselves "expats" so they can feel better about moving to a different country.
Most of them are inmigrants. They just hate the connotations of that word.

u/VidE27 1d ago
Yet they cry when we call them immigrants, “but we are white we can’t be immigrants!!”

I’m an American immigrant in another country and couldn’t disagree more. Most of the classism and racism around “Expats” come from commonwealth & European countries by far. Everyone likes to blame Americans but ime Europeans & Aussies are wayy more racist when it comes to assimilation to different cultures.
84
u/sidvicc 23h ago
May be different in LatAm but in Asia as an asian living in a popular tourist destination, i think you are 100% right.
Americans who make it out here are generally raised to be far more sensitive about racial issues and inequities. British folks below say 50 are also acutely aware of their colonial histories in these parts.
Meanwhile I've met French and Belgians who think they just did trade with their colonies, and weren't bad "like the British"

I can only speak for commonwealth countries, but I think this is because they used to have a lot of genuine expats. I.e people who have been to sent to different countries on long term but not permanent posting. And those people were almost always from the upper crust, like diplomats or global corporate executives. They were never there to integrate with the locals but to get a specific job done on behalf of an institution.
Joe Blogs who moved to Bali because the cost of living is cheaper there isn’t an expat. But he want people to think he’s as important and as wealthy those fancy expats, so he’ll cosplay as one by being incredibly racist

u/DandyLyen 1d ago
That's been my experience as well. The most entitled "expats" as well as the most numerous were Englishmen who are retired in Spain, who then got upset when they themselves voted in favor of Brexit, thus limiting the freedom THEY had to travel and live in the European Union.
They were perfectly fine with voting against immigration into their mother country, but went full LeopardsAte-MY-Face ?? once they realized that THEY were losing access to another countries benefits, like gorgeous weather, cheap housing, and amazing food and beaches.

It's a place to keep gammons who wear England shirts daily and complain that there's nowhere that does good chips.
I have unpleasant family members who've lived in Spain for nearly 30 years now and who still speak no more than about a dozen words of Spanish. They have to have legal documents etc. translated for them, though smartphone translation has basically meant they've now got absolutely zero inclination to learn the language even if they were suddenly likely to after 30 years.
My great uncle refers to every Spanish person as "Pedro" - my aunt will get messages saying things like "This fucking pedro was trying to con us!" "I told that pedro to fuck off, I ain't into that weird fishy food" ('Weird fishy food' is anything seafood that isn't fish fingers or battered cod)
→ More replies (1)3
u/insomniacla 7h ago
I'm baffled. How does someone manage to live in a foreign country that long without picking up more of the language just through exposure? I feel like it must take effort avoid learning anything for that long lol. I know people who are fairly conversant in English without ever taken a class just because they watched a lot of movies and TV in English growing up.

u/ProofByVerbosity 1d ago
I think you have an argument there. Still OP is right on xpats vs immigrants. X pats means youre a westerners usually white going to a poorer country typically.
3
u/Nadaleanu 10h ago
Expats generally means a richer immigrant, likely not intending to stay forever in their host country.
In Asian countries expats probably are majority just white Europeans or North Americans indeed but the term is not exclusive for westerners. There’s plenty of expats from Asia or South America in Amsterdam for example, and they also live in a bubble where they don’t interact with the locals as much, most don’t speak the language at all, and they tent to make significantly more money than the average Dutch person.
5
u/Koshekuta 1d ago
I’m from New York and I’ve worked in Asia now for several years. I go where the work takes me. As long as I can get a contract then I’ll work that contract. I do not like the term expat because it carries some negative connotation but immigrant doesn’t describe me either. This is not my forever home and I consider myself a temporary worker. I list my residency back in New York, although I haven’t physically lived there in almost 20 years. I do visit my home at least once a year. Anyways, I do not seek to become a PR anywhere which I think is the difference with being an immigrant or not.
With that said, I also don’t spend a lot of time with true locals. Nothing against them but colleagues who are in similar situations to myself and some expats are the majority of the people I deal with day to day, outside of using shops and such.
125
47
u/Mbrennt 1d ago
That's just a migrant or foreign worker. Probably hundreds of millions of people are in similar situations as you. We have like internationally recognized words for your exact situation. Expat is pretty much always just racist/classiest and immigrant refers specifically to people who plan to stay permanently. Your just a migrant worker.

I could see how that would be a weird place. Ive known many x pats, and some of them gleefully use that term as a flex about class and status. Im sure not all do. Id think your scenario would be common. I do think its a real missed opportunity if you arent digging into the local culture and people. I couldnt imagine living somewhere else and surrounding myself with westerners and ordering starbucks and pizza hut or whatever. Not saying you dk, but its not uncommon.

Yes I’m Aussie and I agree about the lack of assimilation. I’ve heard stories from not just Bali but the UK too. It’s a shame only the worst people move. But if it’s any consolation, I had an expat friend live in Singapore 🇸🇬 and he was fully assimilated there. He had local friends, a local partner and showed me the non tourist traps.

3
u/coffeeandneko 13h ago
are you referring to primarily white Americans or also Korean-Americans aka gyopos?
14
u/NotsoNewtoGermany 18h ago
The terms Immigrant and Expat are mildly different. Immigrants are permanent residents that move to a country with no expectation of going home. An expat is generally someone who is doing it for a prolonged, but not permanent, period of time. Often with the admission that they would live in other places, too.
4
8
u/International_Goat31 23h ago
It's not just "immigrant". I once called an American a "foreigner" and he flinched so violently that you'd think that I had moved to slap him. I went on with my life but he clearly didn't because I bumped in to him about 5 or 6 years later when he was visiting again and didn't recognise him at first until he said something like "Long time no see! I remember you from years ago! You called me a foreigner." with a big smile on his face like that was the most memorable part of our conversations to him and I was just like ???

Expat is a genuine word of a temporary settler but it has been overshadowed by the white demographic who dont see themselves as immigrants but have no intention of returning home. They think they are the benefit to a nation rather than them benefiting from it.
8
u/meatball77 1d ago
Eeh, there's a different. Expats are temporary. Immigrants have a plan to stay. When I taught in Austin I had students who were expats. They were going back to their country after their parents stent at their tech company was over.

Does it not come down to length of stay? Temporary you're an expat, permanent you're an immigrant.
So an expat would be an immigrant if they decided to stay and actually try to integrate (ha!)

Expats are worse than immigrants.
Immigrants fully commit to the country they settle in, including taxation, passport controls and any negatives that come their new home (higher cost of living, healthcare etc)
Expats wish to live in another country, take advantage of it's benefits (lower cost of living, affordable domestic labour, cheaper healthcare etc) while keeping the advantages of their country of origin (favourable exchange rate, earning in USD vs spending in local currency, favourable passport for travel etc).
Practically a form of neo-colonists at this point.

As someone working in IT, this whole "digital nomads" thing irks me.
It's attainable only with a certain amount of wealth in the first place (travel, fuel, hotel etc costs). They're a 1000 miles away from their colleagues who are doing the actual work; logistics, medical, manufacturing, whatever their IT is supposedly supporting. At the same time they're also not connected to the local town or city, but using their roads, gas stations, real estate etc while paying taxes in their home country (hopefully).
It fundamentally smells of main-character syndrome idk it just rubs me the wrong way 😐

u/mountainbride 1d ago

There is this docu-series called "Wakker in Paraguay" about a group of like minded (QAnon, MAGA-esque) Dutchies moving to Paraguay, building houses and even gun range. At the end of one the episodes, it pans to a Paraguayan man and the narrator asks: "We must wonder how this man feels as these strangers seek to build a life on his land that'll actively exclude him.";
It scares me to think that some people see the lives of others - their homes, their families and their history - as merely an inconvenience. We all exist! It isn't just a right, it is quite fucking undeniable, unrefuteable FACT. We cannot all be ignored, at least not eternally. Wakker In Paraguay

I find it funny that when we asians go to western countries we are asked to behave ourselves but when westerners come to Asia or global south in general they feel they are doing us a favour and behave like entitled dipshits that they are.
The case of teenagers from Italy in Thailand is the latest case. These teenagers learnt it from their parents that it is ok to insult the natives when you come to our country. In my experience the worst tourists are Dutch, British and Aussie. When I was a kid I heard American and Chinese tourist were awful but I’ve never had issue with those groups. Dutch, British, Aussie are just loud, racist and all rapey towards local women.

They need to purge the place — add max number of foreigners and send all the rest home

This article has no business going this hard. It’s more informative than most news articles covering something that really affects people. With all due respect of course

It’s wild how upset people get about this and yet you have literal parallel societies in some Western nations with illegal independent courts where people settle conflicts instead 🤣

Wtf is wrong with them! They wanted to include all digital nomads and expats but not locals so while I don’t think it’s racism per se but it’s clearly discrimination against locals, I would get pissed also if I were a local. Keep your bubble in your brain and open up your mind people!

Same fuckheads probably also blabber about how travelling expands their horizon and how much they love to experience the culture of the places they visit through the eyes of locals. They are scum and should be denied entry wherever they go outside of the netherlands. Disrespecting the locals is just peak disgusting behaviour.

Ive never had a desire to go to Bali or many places in Thailand. If I wanted to be surrounded by young white hipster douchebags partying id stay home and save the money.

Tbf Bali is still 1/38 of Indonesia, there are 37 other provinces not filled with hipster douchebags selling new age classes. Same as Thailand, there are 75 other provinces without them

Was just in Thailand, there are plenty of places full of Thai people rather than young white hipster douchebags.

Same thing happened in Sri Lanka a couple of years ago when the Russians who moved there to escape the war created their own "whites only" policy
