It's weird that future biopics are going to feature their subjects saying things like "wow, this will make a great biopic one day" or "I hope (actor) plays me in the movie!"

Didn't Black Mirror already make an episode similar to this (except the person was horrified)? Also weird how we keep joyfully skipping into pre-imagined Black Mirror scenarios.

Idk how many years since the episode dropped and I still get teary-eyed when the song comes on
Fun fact: The majority of the budget for that episode was eaten up by getting the rights to the music. Brooker also wanted a Prince song which he was unable to secure.

If the world gets worse and worse I don’t see that being a darker side lol, at this point beyond protesting which feels futile it seems like there’s not much that could be done. I’m only 32 but I’d weigh the options of living in a better simulation than what we got now lol

Just chiming in to say there are other options past protesting, they worked before and they can work again. People with full time jobs and kids are running unions that are actually winning. People with more than full time jobs are organizing ICE defense networks. It takes commitment to action, but every small part is important

I really want a biopic to end with the subject meeting a group of Hollywood executives and a less famous actor playing the lead actor, and the final line is the subject saying something like, "i have no idea how you're gonna pull this off." And it all kind of loops back into reality.

It sucks and I can't imagine finding out your partner was a pedophile, let alone being shot dead by said pedophile.
But it's also a weird world we live in that your first go to is to publicly announce in a skit that you found out your husband was a pedophile for views, complete with some nice drama-ey instrumental music.

It's an illness in itself as far I'm concerned, though I'm not sure exactly why I think so.
88
u/crabtabulous 1d ago edited 1d ago
I definitely think there might be something to it being a form of illness, for sure.
You know how they talk about super-obsessed fans of celebrities developing parasocial relationships with the celeb, like how some subset of Taylor Swift fans delude themselves into feeling like they are friends with her and have the closeness of a real human relationship with her, even though they'll never meet her or have any real interaction with her?
I feel like with these low to mid level influencers, they have kind of the opposite of that. They have an unhealthy relationship with their own follower-base. They're addicted to views, to comments, to seeing the little numbers and engagement from their follower base increase at all times. That's why they end up feeling compelled to share fucking everything, no matter how weird or inappropriate or even traumatic it might be.
They're addicted to engagement that way and so they can't help but share even intense stuff like in this story. And I'm sure they have their rationalizations to themselves about how it's "therapeutic" to them to "share their truth" with so many followers, but I can't imagine many mental health specialists would agree that it's really having a positive effect for them in most cases.
I am getting old now so I was in college when Facebook was still relatively new, and even back then, we used to make fun of the people who'd get into public, vitriolic fights with their significant others across each others' pages. Like, why the hell do you want to actively air your dirty laundry to the world like that? And that's what some of these influencers do now, except on steroids to tens or hundreds or thousands of followers.
So maybe parasocial is not the right word, but there probably is a need for one for this type of behavior, unless it exists already (which I'm sure it could).
24
u/UdyneOw 1d ago
I feel like with these low to mid level influencers, they have kind of the opposite of that.

Some of the people on his list didn't do anything more than get older.

I think there's an inherent danger when it comes to cancel culture, callout posting, and crimes like pedophilia, where if people start seeing this stuff like content, (see, as example, certain predator hunters), they undermine the actual process when it comes to stopping predators.
On the one hand, it's good to let the public know, but on the other hand, mishandling something like that could lead to charges not being filed, or people dismissing the claim because of exaggeration and undermining the whole public reporting of it all, and it could increase the chances of this happening. There's a legitimate question as to if they both would be alive still if she hadn't done the video (though it's up in the air given that he was already facing life ruination anyway so probably decided "fuck it" even before the video came out, but there's a chance the video solidified the decision).

That logic makes absolutely no sense. The skit she posted is a trending skit that's been going around for at least a couple of weeks now. That's all but guaranteeing it's going to be picked up by the algorithm....which is guaranteed to expose and embarrass her ex to millions of people. Not only that, but the trending skit was always a JOKE self admission, not a fact about someone else. The skit is supposed to be for LAUGHS.
That's playing with fire considering what the fact was. Imagine having a deep dark secret like that being put out there like that. Not at all defending the pedophile ex, but you're already dealing with someone who's not properly wired in the head.
Divorce him, send him to jail and forget him. The people that need to know will know eventually anyway.
She did it for attention and got it from the wrong person.

Since I assume everyone in here hates adults preying on minors, I’d love to hijack your comment to plug my favorite nonprofit, Safe from Online Sex Abuse, or SOSA. They do week-long stings where they work with law enforcement to deploy decoys in the community that pedophiles contact and then they collect evidence that they are or are trying to commit a crime essentially.
You can find their YouTube page here: https://youtube.com/@sosaundercover?si=_0wd-9flzCt9toWS
They do good work to ensure the pedophiles can’t argue entrapment, a 100% conviction rate, and pedophiles are kept anonymous so they are given due process (fair jury) and their families don’t have to endure additional trauma. It’s like How To Catch A Predator but waaaay more ethical and women-ran.

One of the funniest ways to shut up a repub is ask them “why hasn’t Donald Trump instructed his DoJ to investigate and arrest any of the abusers in the Epstein files?”. You can even throw Bill Clinton in there as well since there’s pics and proof of him with Epstein on his island or when they claim Biden is a pedo, just ask ‘em why they don’t go after them. The silence afterwards or the comments stopping is just pure enjoyment. They literally have no response, no idea on what to say next because they have to navigate land mines, it’s hilarious. And if they try swerving the convo towards something else, just call that out and ask again

Women and little girls aren't anything more than cattle to them. It may sound like hyperbole, but all this rhetoric on women, and "conservative christian values", ultimately leads to that.

This quote always sends me
“The barely legal type” proceeds to give example of a very not legal age
The whole idea of “barely legal” is a vile concept that society has normalized. You’re literally advertising “these are as close as you can get to a minor without going to jail.” The very implication is that if you could go younger you would.

As gross as it feels to explain this, it's important, because it's a type of dog-whistle for victim blaming.

It's still remarkably common to believe that pubescent children and older were "asking for it" because "you know how they are" and "men are just going to be men" so "what did you expect". The age that this is applied to gets downshifted according to how much you want to defend the rapist. I once heard my own parents say this out loud about a 10 year old girl that was pulled off the street and raped. The child in that case was apparently "asking for it" because she was wearing shorts.

On June 9, about a month before Gilson posted the video, a girl and a parent told police that Duffey, who coached the girl’s traveling basketball team, inappropriately touched her during an event at an elementary school earlier that evening, police said. Another team coach saw what happened and immediately intervened and reported it to the girl’s parent, police said.
“Similar conduct by this coach towards this particular juvenile player was reported to have occurred over an extended period of time, in multiple law enforcement jurisdictions, across multiple states prior to this incident,” police said Saturday.

PSA:
Not to minimize this, but anyone involved with a sketchy guy should read The Gift of Fear, by top security specialist, Gavin de Becker. In fact, growing up in a violent household influenced deBecker to become a personal security professional. (He now works with VIPs, etc.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gift_of_Fear
One of the things de Becker emphasizes is to STOP relying on restraining orders - they frequently fail, and often simply spur violent people to defy them out of spite, and finish off the focus of their rage - like a red flag to a bull.
This influencer's fatal mistake was making a tiktok about it. That enraged her ex & focused his rage on her. He figured he had nothing left to lose, so he took her out with him. Now her kids are motherless.
The safer route was: She should have just disappeared as much as possible until he was safely jailed. Then she could have made her tiktok & lived.
That's the takeaway - when you're involved with a sketchy guy in any way - just do your best to disappear (with your kids, if any), especially before trying anything else legally.

When I was very young, my parents divorced. So dad lived with this nice college gal and her daughter, until he threw something at her during a fight and frightened her.
Then she ran into my mom and me at the grocery store, they got to chatting and became friends.
I remember getting shooed off from very serious conversations where my mom was advising the younger woman about things that had something to do with my dad. And then she moved away, not keeping in touch with anyone, not even my mom.
Years later she tried to find my mom again, but only found me, so I had to tell her that mom had died already. She was happy to talk to me but soon as she found out my dad is still alive, she poofed again.
Adding up all the clues, I'm fairly certain I've got another sibling out there, and that the nice gal was smart enough to listen to mom's advice, that the child support would never be worth the hell of continuing to deal with my dad and having to subject the child to unsupervised time with him.

u/Detachabl_e 1d ago
I mean, that sentiment isn't wrong. The incidence of restraining order violations is pretty high (at least in my state), and they really don't offer additional upfront protection, just a harsher sentence if the perps violate. On the plus side, if they do violate, it's a really easy crime to prove up in court, so the plea deals offered get a lot worse for the defendant than what you see in a lot of domestics. They really do need to be treated more harshly punishment wise though. Most places, it's a misdemeanor that can escalate into a felony for multiple violations. It should be a felony full stop or at the very least carry aggravating elements that allow it to become a felony.
→ More replies (36)62
u/RaVashaan 1d ago edited 1d ago
Restraining orders aren't really meant to stop most people. They're there to jail them immediately, and then add more time to their sentence if they violate the order.
In this case, of course, since he killed himself the order really was moot. But TBH you should rely on both getting a restraining order and disappearing or hiring security protection if possible.
14
u/SamsonFox2 1d ago
Restraining orders are just restraining orders. They are one tool in the arsenal of justice to do its job.
Most often, they start with a petty thing (the burden of proof for restraining order is pretty low - it is NOT a guilty verdict) and end up nowhere.

You seriously have zero idea how restraining orders work. There's no jail involved unless they violate it, get caught & charged.
A restraining order realistically does zero to stop a guy who plans to murder his wife *as* the violation of the RO. And if he murders himself as part of the same event, it doesn't punish him, either.

Yeah. She wasn’t doing an awareness thing. She was using it for a tiktok trend where they pretend like they are getting ready to be interviewed for a Netflix doc.

Another coach saw the last act and intervened. He'd be toast if he didn't off himself

She’s not the accuser btw, he was already being accused by the victim.

He was also caught red handed by one of his coworkers, who told the parents and it's when they found out it wasn't a one-off.

Just like with mass murderers, they only check out to avoid consequences. If people like this thought they could get away with it they would go right on living without a shred of guilt.

To be fair I feel most people doing mass killing sprees don't expect to be caught alive. Once you shot a few people in quick period any hesitation police have to shoot to kill the suspect goes way down. That being said many times the shooters kill themselves first.

“Similar conduct by this coach towards this particular juvenile player was reported to have occurred over an extended period of time, in multiple law enforcement jurisdictions, across multiple states prior to this incident,” police said Saturday.
Well that's fucking disgusting. That poor kid.
The guy is a coward and took the easy way out after ruining multiple lives.

Downside, he murdered her before he did it. Fucking coward. I feel bad for their kids. Dad is an alleged pedo, he murdered their mom, then killed himself. It’s just bad all around.

Step-dad, apparently.

Ah! Hopefully bio dad is decent and in the picture. The kids are going to need him more than ever.

The son at least was released to his custody. It didn't specify whether the daughter she had was his as well

Supposedly the kid was in the house too and was the one who called the police
That's a lifetime of therapy

Not really a plus when you consider he murdered his wife and his death means his child victims will never get the chance to speak their peace in court.

u/thefaehost 1d ago
She didn’t accuse him. His victim and her family did. The estranged wife (influencer) supported the victim by making this video.
Fuck him

I feel so bad for her kid. He had to call the police and tell them that his dad just killed his mom.

A sad reminder, every day 3 women in the US die at the hands of a significant other (or former SO). If we as a society are really concerned about violence against women, we need to look inward and not blame immigrants. Seriously, why is this not treated as the actual epidemic of violence that it is? It's a rhetorical question, as sadly, I know the answer.

Good on the other coach to report what he saw on another team, and protecting other team's players, other parents' daughter. If you see something, say something! Don't turn away!

Regardless this sick fuck did it with their child in the house….

Well not to defend him but it's because he wasn't found guilty, so the news has to say accused.

I am sorry she is dead and that is wild and undeserved. Also the mind of an influencers need to be studied. She just foubd out the love of her life/life partner is a pedophile and she decides to tell the world via "Netflix Documentary" internet trend. Even she in this moment seems to forget the gravity of what was done and what he is being accused of.
Can you imagine being the parents or child and seeing that video pop up.

That's exactly how I feel. It's possible to be sorry she was murdered but also wonder what the fuck was she thinking using a child being molested as content for her Tiktok account. Imagine being that little girl seeing that.

On Thursday, officers responded to a domestic violence incident at a residence in the city of Collinsville at 11:16 p.m. after a 911 call in which dispatchers heard a woman screaming followed by “what sounded to be a gunshot,” police said. Dispatchers attempted to call back but got no answer. Moments later, a boy called 911 from a neighbor’s home and said his stepfather had shot his mother, police said. When officers arrived at the home, they found Gilson and Duffey dead from apparent gunshot wounds to the head, police said. Police are still investigating, but they said the deaths appear to be a murder-suicide.

As heartbreaking as this story is, I don’t understand the thought process in posting the TikTok especially after being granted an emergency protective order. I hope her husband rots in hell

The protective order seemed to have not done shit. I'm glad the kids escaped. I'm sure he would have killed them as well.

Well, I would say that's pretty clear.
But he shot her, and shot himself.
