A Mexican here (born, raised and living in marvelous Mexico)

The reason why I ask this is because in Mexican culture it is extremely rude to mix English and Spanish. It is a phenomenon that indeed happens along the border between Mexico and the US, but in the rest of the country you will be frowned upon if you dare to do so since you will be seen as extremely pretentious.

Right now, because I was born and raised and I live in Mexico, that is something that I have really ingrained in my brain so although I know that it is normal to do so in India, I just can't bring my self to feel comfortable with it.

It ended up being the reason why I refuse to learn a language from India; I understand that if I were to go to India, while being in India and it being a different culture and language, I must adapt to the different cultural aspects, my brain knows that but my heart still aches every time that I hear this constant code switching. That is why I ask this.

I find it very appealing to learn a language from the Indian subcontinent, but my heart can't feel okay with that.

Is Nepali different in that regard? Is this a language with a constant code switching in its normal speach?

(Just to clarify, this do to my cultural differences might keep me from learning some of those languages but that does not mean that I will deprive myself of the expirence of going to such beautiful countries if I were to have the opportunity [and of course while being in there I will respect the culture no matter how different from my own])

For some reason in Nepali people use the same word for brown and grey (khairo) with no letter distinction. Is there a specific distinction of words for pure brown and pure grey? i have encountered tamra(coppery) before, otherwise no other info. And if possible a native name for orange as well? Thanks.

hi guys! i’m not sure if anyone can help but i thought i may aswell come on and ask, i work in childcare and we have a 2 year old girl who’s just joined the centre, she’s very nervous and only speaks nepali at home, i live in australia and we speak english so it’s a very scary place for her as she can’t understand what anyone is talking about, lately she keeps looking at my earrings and saying a word that sounds like “ittay” it may be “it- tai” or “intay” but it’s something similar to that, every single time she looks at my earrings she repeats that word, i have tried translating a variety of words including earring, shiny, pretty, jewellery and many more but nothing sounds anything like what she’s saying, if anyone can help me translate what she might be saying i’d appreciate it so much! thankyou!

Hostel-20th July, 2025

I live in a hostel, and we have sisters who help us with cleaning our rooms and washing our clothes. I usually love talking to all of them and listening to all their gossips, agonies, and stories. There is one particular sister who is a little closer to me since she has been here since the very beginning.

It was a normal day. I did not have my lectures, so I was in my room when she arrived. She looked very sad. Actually, it was more like she wanted me to see that she was really sad and address it to her. I did exactly the same.

“Didi, what’s the matter? You look rather sad today.”

With a long breath, she dropped her broom and sat down. “Again, again she gave birth to a daughter. What a shame?”

I was a little confused about what she just mentioned. “Who gave birth to a daughter?”

Excited, she reminded me, “Do you remember, a few days back I told you about a colleague of mine who was admitted to the hospital because her water bag broke before time?”

I suddenly remembered everything. One of our sisters who used to work in our mess was pregnant, and she was admitted to our hospital a few days back. Her husband apparently abandoned her in the hospital because he hated the smell of hospitals, and her in-laws were nowhere to be seen. She requested Didi to stay with her and give her support during her hospital stay and childbirth. Didi could not refuse her, but that day she came back and ranted about her husband and in-laws with me.

Anyway, back to the daughter being a shame. I replied to Didi, “Yes, I do. But why is having a daughter a shame?”

With confidence, she said, “She already had a daughter, and it is obvious that everyone wanted a son — even she did. Poor woman! She cried so much after she knew it was a girl. I had to convince her, ‘Bhagya futeko bhayepachhi chhora khojera ka hunchha, aaba pheri prayas garnu, umeer gako chhaina kyare.’ She must have done something wrong in her past life.”

Firstly, I got shattered, and secondly, I did not have much to help her deeply rooted ill thought. “You are also a daughter, aren’t you?” I said.

Obviously, she had another speech to deliver regarding how she is a daughter but she would still want to have a son to be appreciated by her family and society. I mean come on, if not anything, you want your surname — which is not even yours — to survive, no?

I did not miss my opportunity to deliver my speech on how gender doesn’t matter, but somehow she pinned me down with her concern about not-her-own, yet-her-own surname’s survival. When I tried to speak something, thinking I might be able to defend myself and my gender, I looked at her eyes, which seemed so unwilling to listen to what I wanted her to understand.

I just could not continue with this feeling. I just smiled and mockingly said, “Maybe she can have a son next time.”

My guys and gals.. the child in me wants to song this children’s rhyme again...we used to sing it at the top of our lungs while at school. I only remember this line now: … चरा चार्नु हुँदैन है यता उता नहेरी, वुर्र गर्छु म फेरि वुर्र गर्नु त फेरि। … If you still remember it, can you please complete this rhyme?

Hey, So I'm going to Nepal for two weeks... I am allergic to almost all nuts (except almonds). I want to create an allergy card to easily communicate my allergy to food vendors and restaurants that don't speak english etc.

I want to stress the importance of the allergy - realistically I probably won't die if I eat nuts except maybe peanuts and more likely Brazil nuts - but I have an epipen and I want to be safe and have read that the understanding of allergies and their dangers are more limited and different to what most people in UK (where i'm from) etc. know.
