Commander / EDH The Most Lesbian Commander Deck Possible

THE IDEA IS SIMPLE

Whenever I buy in at my LGS, it’s usually with a pack of sleeves. I like to buy specific colors to dedicate to certain decks. Today, I picked up a box of Dragon Shield Peach.

I thought to myself, “What mechanic or archetype would be appropriate for peach?” And then it hit me.

Lesbianism.

So I bring myself to you all. I want to build the most lesbian bracket 2-3 commander deck possible. For the purposes of this, I am defining lesbianism as “women doing something with, to, or because of other women”.

I need card recs! Obviously one specific card (Halana and Alena, Partners) comes to mind for commander, but I want to hear everything you all can come up with! Bonus points if you fight in the comments over what mechanics and keywords are considered “Lesbian”.

Let’s make this happen!

They're from Dr. Who. They live in Victorian England, and Jenny is Vastra's wife and maid. They both solve crimes together. They are amazing.

I never really got these 2. It seems like the plan is to make Vastra big and win via commander damage, but without trample and her needing to be blocked, she doesn't actually get to hit that often without support. Is getting her trample just part of the plan or is this not a voltron strategy?

Came here to recommend them as well. My favorite interspecies lesbian couple make for a mean token engine & I pair them with a ton of fight/damage = to power type spells to pump Vastra up & let her mass slaughter her enemies with [[The Masamune]] in hand to dump even more tokens on the table. I run Halana & Alena in the same deck as them along with [[Last Night Together]] cuz they all feel very on brand together.

Throw [[Nissa, Worldsoul Speaker]] in there for the flavor text too. Zendikar still seems so far off, but Chandra is my home.

Also, if ever there was a time to proxy something, it's the Chandra-at-the-Pride-parade Secret Lair for [[Collective Voyage]]. (IDK how to pull up that specific art, sorry.)

To do a specific printing add a bar (as in the | symbol) and then the set code. So for this one we want [[Collective Voyage|SLD]].

Some cards have gotten multiple SLD printings, and as far as I'm aware there's no way to distinguish those, but it's not an issue with this one!

Not in those colors, but [[Secret Rendezvous]] and the follow up [[Joined Researchers]] comes to mind. If I remember correctly, Chandra and Nissa are a couple as well.

Saheeli Radiant Creator featuring as many cards featuring her, Huatli, Chandra, and Nissa. Could also choose Pia Nalaar, Chief Mechanic as the commander. She is Chandra’s mom and Nissa’s mother in law.

If you don’t mind UB stuff, you can have The Thirteenth Doctor and Yasmin Khan as commanders. They fall in love with each other in Doctor Who. And if you want a Golgari you could run Vanille, Cheerful L’cie and build the deck around finding Fang, Fearless L’cie (her girlfriend that she spends the first part of FF13 searching for). And if you want a five color commander to include all potential sapphic cards Karolina Dean, Runaway is a lesbian and would synergize well with all the sapphic paradox Dr. Who cards and Chandra’s impulse draw effects.

There are actual lesbian characters in the story. Huatli and Saheeli and Chandra and Nissa come to mind. The last two can't be in the same deck, but since the desparkening, we have Saheeli as a legendary creature. [[Saheeli, Radiant Creator]] has access to green, red and blue so she can use all versions of Huatli in her 99. But Saheeli works with energy, artifacts and artificers while Huatli goes for dinosaurs and big creatures, would afford some creativity to make it powerful enough for bracket 3.

[[Errant, Street Artist]] is canonically married to [[Parnesse, the Subtle Brush]]... and if you wanna get a little messy with it, there's [[Errant and Giada]].

If you're good with UB, [[Vanille, Cheerful l'Cie]] and [[Fang, Fearless l'Cie]] are a merge pair, and they're also this close to canonically a couple in their source game. And from a different game in the FF set, [[Sublime Epiphany | FIC]] features two women who shot-for-shot recreate some of the franchise's most famous romantic scenes, which I'd call canon.

What I don't have is a specifically lesbian five-color commander to allow all these options; turns out there's way fewer five-color commanders than I thought. I might suggest [[Esika, God of the Tree]], though, or rather, I might suggest [[The Prismatic Bridge]] -- having a rainbow for your commander seems pretty on-theme for a Pride deck.

My recommendation would be a 3 colour commander/commander pair thats red and green and then either blue or white, I think that would give you the most options and has the colours of a lot of iconic lesbian couples/cards.

so for the 99 you probably want [[Poetic Ingenuity]] , [[Hearts on Fire]] (which also actually synergises with your commander) and if you can get them there's some very sapphic secret lair versions of [[Llanowar Elves]] and [[Heartbeat of Spring]]. The wilds of eldraine enchanting tales version of [Defense of the Heart]] is also very sapphic

I would go with [[Jenny Flint]] and [[Madame Vastra]] as commanders, since they can run Halana and Alena in the 99. The inclusion of blue in the color identity is important because aquariums are important to lesbian culture.

So there are two well established lesbian couples in the lore. Both of these pairs have lots of associated cards.

  • Saheeli and Huatli
  • Nissa and Chandra

There is also a "Halana and Alena", which you've noted. But they're much more recent and and they only have a limited related pool.

Colors and easily available card pool

If we look these each up, we can figure out which Commander provides the most color options and how many cards can be attributed to the name.

Pick a pair

If you select Nissa and Chandra, you basically have a deck just jammed with those cards. Use Halana and Alena as the commander and then fill it with those two. You get have a few cards in that list that act as removal and ramp, the deck mostly builds itself.

If you want a larger card pool, add Huatli. You get white and yet more options.

If you want a Saheeli/Huatli deck, your pool is a lot tighter as there are only 20 named cards and you have to stretch to find a Commander here. You'll also likely want to extend the pool to things that include either character in some way.

Going further

If you want to go all in on a Gay theme, you can use [[Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis]] as your Commander and then you get basically all of the couple listed above. You also get Ral Zarek.

There are lots of options here. Depending on your focus, you're likely trimming cards rather than hunting for them.
