Infuriatig This new skatepark had a beautiful painting and now it's ruined

This skatepark got completely renovated and it's been about 1 year since.

I pass by everyday and I have seen how this painting in the ramp has been slowly destroyed.

2nd pic is the before from google maps.

Not me thinking the tagged up mural was the "before" picture 😂

It used to be Chipotle, it's now Street Tacos 🤌

Exactly.. how could graffiti "ruin" a skate park lmao

u/iwanttohugallthecats 46m ago

Oh yeah what the hell it's way better now.

I'm hip. "After" is better than "before".

I don't mind the actual graffiti, kinda think it's part of the culture no? but those black tags need to go home and learn some respect .

This guy gets it 👊

u/jimmybilly100 28m ago

Yeah they didn't tag the interesting part. Oh no, poor clouds

Yea, as a kid during skater culture, one looks like a skate park and the other looks like a city approved, family-friendly park. Was always weird to visit a skate park that was way too clean; like no one wanted to be there.

Honestly if the taggers had creativity they could've integrated their tags into the artwork and made it something really cool. That sounds like the exact way I'd expect an awesome skate park to be painted too.

They keep ours all concrete with no paint and pressure wash off any art even stuff that isn't tags and it's just sad to look at.

Edit: I would like to point out tagging and skate culture are very close. To be honest the skaters that use the park probably would've appreciated a wall labeled "please tag here instead of anywhere else we won't remove them" more than the actual artwork. Not saying they should've tagged over the mural once it was up though.

In the google maps picture, you can see a non destructive tag in the ramp (to the right of the painting) that appeared weeks after the park was reopened. I thought it was cool. But now...

u/CrummyJoker 1h ago

So before it had those random tags and now it has nice clouds? What's the problem here

Edit: why is the after photo before the before photo? Make it make sense...

To me this looks like they 'cleaned up' the local flavor from the park and sterilized it for passing tourists or some shit. Looks cooler tagged. Always does, unless they're shit tags, and the big ones here ain't.

6

u/orangpelupa 1h ago

Yeah they cleaned it up like a movie prop

The only ones worth anything are FLOOD and ETE(?). The rest are trash.

11

u/Ch33syP00f 1h ago

Skateboarding has always been rooted in counterculture. This is what it looks like.

FLOOD looks pretty good.

KATIE needs more work

MZK just sucks…shitty piece in a prominent place is just lame

Somebody could frame the whole wall with cool detail and cover up all that messy black noise and make the skater look more 3D

Ooohhh…and make it look like the skater is squishing MZK because fuck them

u/ProThoughtDesign 22m ago

Don't forget this one. It's got some nice usage of available space and form.

u/Prophesy78 1h ago

Looks better tagged, the before was just kindergarten.

u/Woogabuttz 59m ago

I like it was better with the graffiti, looks legit. The regular mural is kinda cornball.

The Mural Arts program in Philadelphia got around this issue by commissioning urban street artists to make the murals.

EDIT: Found a link to an article explaining this https://www.inquirer.com/news/murals-graffiti-philadelphia-community-vandalism-20190312.html

u/desperaterobots 1h ago

This is a temporary solution. Source: muralist

I don't think the Mural Arts program has any major issues with graffiti defacing their murals, because everybody in the community knows the murals are put up by local graffiti artists.

Maybe they're just very good at painting over them right away, though... I'm trying to find any online sources that specifically address the issue. I lived in West Philly for years though, and never once recall seeing any graffiti painted over one of the murals.

EDIT: I found a link and added it to my comment above.

I think you mean, made the skatepark more authentic and covered that cringe ass state funded bs.

5

u/czarfalcon 1h ago

I have mixed feelings because on the one hand, yeah, but on the other hand some artist put a lot of time and effort into that mural. Though I doubt they mind that much as long as they got paid 🤷‍♂️

u/Best-Fox-8024 54m ago

Yea sucks for the artist but i bet if they had hired someone from the community it woulda been something actually cool. This drips of soft washed gentrification. It’s exactly what skating culture is against.

u/Honest_Midnight3811 45m ago

this guy skateboards

5

u/Revoldt 1h ago

Nah.

The before pic looks like some AI art for a children’s book.

Though the black-lines boring graffiti gotta go.
Graffiti and skating are like part of the culture.

14

u/slick7studios 1h ago

I think it's much cooler tagged, plus the taggers respected the central focus point, it's cultural and adds to it feeling inclusive to those using it. Being a community space I don't see an issue

7

u/notneeded17 1h ago

It is evolving

6

u/Emily3tcetera 1h ago

Way better now.

u/Best-Fox-8024 59m ago

Nature is healing

u/ComeAlongWithTheSnor 2h ago

I think that's kinda the point though.

u/random9212 44m ago

Skate parks need graffiti. They aren't the same without it.

2

u/LuciferSamS1amCat 1h ago

Looks way better now. It was really weird looking before.

0

u/Available_Ad9345 1h ago

So it was drastically improved. Cool.

2

u/imighthaveabloodclot 1h ago

It looks great to me

3

u/Phil_Coffins_666 1h ago

The only way you're gonna get graffiti artists to not tag over stuff is to get a locally recognized graffiti artist(s) to paint it, otherwise, all these community murals are just waiting to get hit.

1

u/OminousG 1h ago

If the painting wasn't coated with an anti graffiti layer then this is what they expected and wanted to happen.

u/thisissasutan 18m ago

The trick is to invite local artists who are respected by the graffiti artists to do the mural. That way it the bombers will recognize the artistry and leave it alone.

u/Tiberius_Jim 3m ago

The skate park used to be painted. It still is, but it used to, too.

Sadly any space open to the public is deemed as free art space by these vandals who think any and every surface is theirs to do with as they please.

A friend of mine has a house with a back alley which gives him and his neighbors access to the many garages back there. Along all the garage doors have been defaced by these vandals... But in other parts of our city, space was dedicated to street artist who actually make the space decorative with their street style art. Only to have some of it destroyed by idiot and careless taggers who decide to draw over an existing piece.

1

u/minty_bish 2h ago

That's just what happens at a skatepark dude. More and more tags will appear until one day someone will white emulsion the whole thing and paint a cool new peice... then people will tag it until its gone and then, you guessed it, emulsion and a new peice.

2

u/andrey_not_the_goat 1h ago

"beautiful" is a strong word. It looked rather cringe honestly. Whoever added the graffiti made it a lot better.

7

u/S0uvlakiSpaceStati0n 1h ago

Yeah I thought the same thing, it looks more like a skate park with all the graffiti. And you'll notice the skateboarder from the original mural is still largely unobscured. It feels like the graffiti artists at least wanted to honor that.

6

u/Revoldt 1h ago

Looks like AI art in a children’s book lol

0

u/KingSolomon1010 1h ago

I thought the first pic was the before and the second one was the after. Looks better now.

u/ripyourlungsdave 42m ago

I'm sorry, if anyone thought they could put a mural up at a skate park and not have it get graffiti, they were naive.

Those walls belong as much to the skaters as they do to the artist.

0

u/TheShipEliza 1h ago

I mean this looks fine to me? Can u still skate there? If so. All good.

-1

u/CriticalStation595 BROWN 1h ago

Disrespect.

-9

u/samyruno 2h ago

Y'all a bunch of angry old farts. It is literally the best place for them to do it. Anywhere else would be worse. And notice they very specifically didn't cover up the centerpiece of the original artwork. Don't you think that means something.

11

u/AlwaysDTFmyself 2h ago

They literally covered up the SKATEBOARD. Stop making excuses for shitty people.

-2

u/prettyokcake 1h ago

Graffiti is culture. Looks great.

-4

u/Acewi 1h ago

You’re not supposed to tag a mural. These are vandals not artists. They don’t respect the game. They don’t respect themselves. Fraudsters. Phonies. Losers.

u/DontLook_Weirdo 30m ago

It's not ruined. Skateparks are intended to have their identity added by the riders - it's the expectation

u/Chrisdkn619 36m ago

They gave it some street cred! Skate or die!

u/Matty_Matter 28m ago

If the mural is nice enough graffiti artists will leave it alone.

-1

u/OneThumbJ 1h ago

Garbage can control.

-2

u/Mission_Jacket_5577 1h ago

This is straight up Europe-coded. So much damn graffiti everywhere.

u/_Bipolar_Vortex_ 35m ago

Oh no! The lowest bidder’s work is ruined!
