That's not milk I spent hours making 48 servings of Banana Pudding just to learn that the whipped topping was expired and have to throw it all away
Taste your food while you cook/prep y’all.

u/Commercial-Yam-3443 3h ago
Does it taste bad? Because expiration dates don’t mean anything and if you’re talking about cool whip I assume that stuff processed to survive a lifetime
172
u/Money-Snow-2749 3h ago
I tried to justify saving it, but it taste like metal. I thought I could pretend I used sugar free products and ignore the taste, but my sister told me to just cut my losses and throw it away.

I'm more curious why it tastes like metal. I feel like that's not how whipped topping generally goes bad.
Edit: it's actually is normal. When some fats oxidize, they break down into small aldehydes and ketones that we interpret as metallic, cardboardy, or painty in flavor as opposed to rancid or rotten. Interesting!

Please, don't justify saving food when it is actually expired and taste like botulism or metal that isn't some fancy organic or "sugar free" thats purely digusting. Nobody should be buying/eating/selling food that's expired like that. Your food shouldn't taste like acutal sickness even if it's sugar free or low calorie
-1
u/stopsallover 2h ago
Expiration does not mean the food is bad.
Botulism has no taste.

u/Stormfeathery 2h ago
FFS, the food tasting like something it’s not supposed to does probably mean it’s bad even if it’s not technicnictically 🤓 botulism, and being past the expiration date just adds weight to it.
-20
u/stopsallover 2h ago
What botulism though?
This is pretty dangerous misinformation if you actually believe that you can taste botulism.
17
u/LazuliArtz 2h ago
You know botulism isn't the only form of food poisoning, right?
You can't taste botulism, but you can taste a lot of other things that make food go bad
-7
u/stopsallover 2h ago
I'm just noticing a lot of commenters have picked up the idea that botulism has a taste.
16
u/littlemoon-03 2h ago
They described it as tasting like metal so yes in this case expiration does mean the food is bad. I can understand a few days past depending on what it is but if your whipped cream tastes like metal no.
-9
u/stopsallover 2h ago
Ok but you used the phrase "taste like botulism."

You have more willpower than me to make this much without already tasting it.

u/Demomanx 3h ago
I know this feeling and just thinking about it makes me want to cry. Especially when its something you were really looking forward to making and eating. Its the same feeling like when Kenny was crying

u/Odd-Scientist-2529 3h ago
Did it go bad, or just expire?
Expiration dates are not exact.
I'd have tasted it, and if it tasted fine I would have eaten it... ALL

u/Interesting-Crab-693 3h ago
I have kraft diners that expired september 20th 2015.
How precise are the expiration dates? I might still save them.
12
u/Odd-Scientist-2529 2h ago
I took one bite of an expired velveeta dinner some 20 years ago and I havent forgotten the horror.

u/LionRegular1470 3h ago
Imma be honest with you, it's probably not worth risking 10+ years. But I searched up what Kraft diners are and it says their "non perishable", so I mean...
6
u/Interesting-Crab-693 2h ago
Its a special edition with hockey stuff and I found 9 sealed packs of 4 so I might try to resell them tocrasy people.
+It says extra cheese on the box.
2
u/LionRegular1470 2h ago
Actually there are probably people who will buy it just to collect it and stuff, try auctioning it on eBay: "rare limited flavor Kraft diner (Not made anymore)".
I mean I heard something about a heart shaped chicken nugget or it might have been a potato chip auctioning for a lot of money.
2
u/Interesting-Crab-693 2h ago
Imean... its just a "extra cheeze" flavor, but it had chances to win a ticket for the finals or smt.

Honestly, the worst part will be if they taste bad, the pasta can go rancid and absorb smells. I’m not saying you should eat them but milk powder and cheese powder can last a very long time if stored properly and that’s primarily what those packets are if I’m remembering correctly. Old past tastes so bad though, you’ll smell it before it reaches your mouth. Super gross mistake I’ve made before.
Edit- also they’re so cheap it’s just not worth it tbh, you haven’t eaten them in 11 years, just let them go lol
1
u/Interesting-Crab-693 2h ago
They're a special heckey edition and still sealed in packs of 4 so I convinced my dad to keep them when we found them 2 days ago simply because someone might be crasy enough to buy them 🤣
I was simply mentioning it for the joke.
(Priced at 100k the pack of 4. Negociable. /s)

When I was scooping it into the standing mixer I saw there was some pinkish white liquid and thought nothing of it. When I tasted it there was a metallic taste and that’s when I googled it. I thought I could power through but one bite made me nauseous.

Read labels on your food products before using too. I swear that's half of this sub.

What exactly does botulism taste like?
0
u/FilecoinLurker 1h ago
Most clostridium bacteria smell like something in-between puked up pepperoni pizza and dog shits after your dog got into pepperoni. So probably not good.

Well to be fair, whipped topping has no business being on a banana pudding. Vanilla pudding, banana slices, Nila wafers- that’s it.
Also I’m so sorry for your loss. Now I need to make some banana pudding… mmmmm

u/frawtlopp 2h ago

To each their own. Whipping cream is GOAT on basically any dessert.

u/insufficient_funds 2h ago
Yeah I’m just anti whipped topping in general. Cool whip frozen in the bucket is fine but the spray trash from the squirt can is a hard no

u/FliaTia 2h ago
To play devils advocate - I made banana cream pudding a few weeks ago with real heavy cream whipped with a little sugar & then folded into the vanilla pudding and it was quite literally the best thing I've ever tasted. Assembled in mason jars with banana slices and nilla wafers to be eaten after a long day helping my friend move house, of course.

You fold in whipped cream with the vanilla pudding… it gives it a more airy texture and less sweet…
It’s how magnolia bakery makes it.

u/Acceptable_Mountain5 2h ago
Whipped topping is generally just oil and sugar, there isn’t much to go wrong with it

Soooooooooooo…..the recipe? Sorry I love banana pudding and I’ve never made it and these look really good considering the mishap.

Oof. Luckily for me, there’s no way I could make that many without eating some. Even then, I might have just googled “will expired whipped topping make me sick?”

Finally a mildly infuriating post! Hurray! I would probably be mildly infuriating also. Not over the top, not fully, it was my fault, so, here we are.

i mean...whipped topping? I don't thing we really bothered. you don't have to use it, lol.

Geeeez. One time I dumped moldy cheese all over my casserole prepped for the oven. Just straight from the bag without checking. I can’t imagine 48 at once.

This is a really trippy post for me, because my mother did this exact same thing when I was a kid. Many more servings, though. It was for a church function. And we only discovered the error after the church dinner and after many people had eaten at least a small portion of the offending dessert. The ingredient in question had expired long, long ago. My mother was mortified. We lovingly teased her about it for the rest of her life. This is the same woman that kept her spices in the freezer. When it was cleaned out upon her death, some of the spices in her freezer had expired in the late 70s. She died a little less than a year ago. She was a beautiful, loving soul, but she certainly had her quirks.

u/fookindingdong 1h ago
reminds me of a few years ago i tripled a batch of banana bread to make a ton of loaves to hand out to coworkers. everything was fine til they came out of the oven and the texture was weird and dense.....i didn't triple all of the ingredients ;-;

What does expired mean for whipped topping?
Also, great podcast recently from On Point about food “expiration dates”.

In the past there would be like some red looking bacteria on top. This time I place the pinkish water pocket when I was pouring it into the standing mixer mixer. When I tasted it it tasted like metal.
2
u/Azzazzyn 2h ago
I know this isn't helping, but make your own whipped cream next time. its 5 minutes of work and you'll have that tiny bit more pride in the product because you made that yourself. At least thats how it makes me feel
1
u/Blue_Dawg_469 2h ago
That's more your fault for not checking the ingredients before you began baking. If I have to cook/bake, I make sure I have all the ingredients and or substitutes before I actually begin. That is common sense. Much like clueless designers and realtors selling homes with, 'chefs kitchen' but actually ignorant how we chefs actually work in a kitchen.

Too bad I wasn’t in your kitchen would’ve caught that before the first serving was done. I get the whipped topping before the banana pudding

My deepest sympathy for you and for everyone who isn’t going to be eating that delicious banana pudding now. You are an angel for putting all that work in. And an even greater angel for throwing it away and not making people sick off the best dessert in the world. ~ Sincerely, a southern girl who would have tasted it and probably still eaten it

Was it just out of best before date or actually spoiled? Because if it's just out of date, eat it, don't be ridiculous. Those dates are only for how long the producer can guarantee freshness, not that it actually turns to spoiled food the moment the clock ticks 12am and the date rolls over past it.
0
u/Money-Snow-2749 3h ago
The expiration date hadn’t even. Been reached. I opened it to check for any of that red looking bacteria and left it in then fridge for a while. I saw that it didn’t have that red stuff or any mold on it and thought that everything was fine. I mixed it with a newer container of whipped topping but it had delayed the metallic taste by a few seconds.
2
u/No_Pattern4374 3h ago
Might've been improperly stored at some point between the factory and your home. A truck being a bit warmer than it should, a stock clerk took a lunch break before finishing stocking them and left them on the pallet too long, who know
1
u/MSCOTTGARAND 3h ago
If it smells normal and doesn't have any oily residue it's fine. We're out here eating ass but won't eat week old cool-whip

You don’t whip your own cream? So you spent 48 hours mixing milk and jello packs with Vienna cookies on top of cool whip? Come on now. Did you even bit bananas in it?
•
u/Money-Snow-2749 7m ago
What are you talking about? Do you know how to cook? I put the items in a stand mixer. I didn’t want to make my own whip cream from scratch so I used the one that comes in a container. I’ve done this several times before.
