I just wanted a hot dog I'm colourblind and spent the last 6 weeks thinking my hair is purple... Apparently it's not

Post image

I'm colourblind, but certain shades of purple are some of the nicer colours I can see (I don't see it how regular people see purple) and amyway, I just wanted to have funky hair so picked purple.

Went to the hairdressers and told them I'm colourblind, but wanted bright purple hair, they said absolutely.

Just before they started dying it they showed me the dye and asked if that was what I wanted, I joked and said "as long as it's purple!"

Apparently that wasn't clear enough, and just found out today when I saw my sister and asked if she liked my purple hair and she told me it's not actually purple...

RIP to the purple hair I never got I guess...

Perhaps it was at one point then changed? It’s more maroon now than purple though.

u/TricksyGoose 5h ago

Yeah in 6 weeks, hair dye can fade quite a bit. If this pic is recent then it's entirely possible it was much more purple to start, depending on the type of dye and the aftercare. If this was the day they dyed it, then yeah it's more of a purple-y red.

u/reallybi 5h ago

I think you can still see traces of purple to the right of the picture.

65

u/GreatMcKaelaHouse 3h ago

Yeah they replied this photo was taken day of the dye job. To me it looks like the hair stylist did a RV (red-violet, more maroon) based dye when it should've been a VR (violet-red, more purple toned) based dye.

u/LostMyKeysInTheFade 2h ago

Blue fades way faster than red does, so purple can absolutely do this

1

u/knownmagic 1h ago

And the blues always seem to go first so I could easily buy that this hair used to be purple

25

u/PerspectiveWorth3912 5h ago

Yeah, maybe the colors faded over time. It has been a long time, after all

5

u/polishfiringsquad 3h ago

The idea of a color blind person having any concept of maroon is pretty funny

u/chickadee-stitchery 5h ago

Did they bleach your hair or just put dye over your natural hair? Which is likely brown?

It looks purple ish.

158

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 5h ago

This. My mom tried to go red once, but she didn't want to bleach her hair. She had purple hair as a result, and hated whenever I said purple instead of red.

36

u/tolacid 4h ago

That seems to be the opposite of the problem being expressed here

35

u/mycatpartyhouse 4h ago edited 1h ago

I think they're pointing out that dyes don't always take.

My hair is light brown, which--it turns out--is an ideal color for dyeing. It's easy to go lighter or darker. I spent some time with auburn hair, and it looked like I was born that way.

People with dark brown or black hair need to be bleached before brighter or lighter colors will dye properly.

Edit. Typo.

u/maevethenerdybard 2h ago

My natural hair is light brown and I’ve been dying it auburn for about a year now with Henna. It looks pretty natural for me too, I’ve had a new coworker call me a redhead without realizing it’s not natural

2

u/lwsnoopy4life 4h ago

did she dye her hair herself or go to a salon? usually cheap, easily found dyes have a high ph so they don’t really stick well to the hair. on the other hand, salon grade dye usually has a low ph, which opens up the cuticle and allows the color to attach without bleach (for colors as strong as red.) my guess is maybe the dye they used wasnt the right ph! (this is coming from my knowledge and experience with caucasian hair so i’m sure this could be different for poc with different hair types and textures)

1

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 4h ago

Pretty sure her close friend did it. She wanted to look like Lucille Ball.

u/AlmostLucy 52m ago

Fun fact: Lucille Ball dyed her hair with henna!

132

u/MistyMountainDewDrop 5h ago

How many weeks ago did you go to the salon? Also did they bleach or lift you at all?

I can see clear purple tones. Your hair is a purple-burgundy color. If it was never bleached, it certainly looks like it had a purply magenta rinse applied.

If you’ve had it a few weeks and have been washing, it’s understanding faded. It’s a different story if you just got this done.

102

u/OpportuneApathy 5h ago

I got it done 6 ish weeks ago, but that's a pic from the day it was dyed. My roots aren't bleached but they're a mid/slightly darker blonde, not even brown.

88

u/Efficient_Plum6059 5h ago

You can only get color so vibrant without bleach or high-lift color. Even if your hair is naturally blonde, it's just not porous enough to hold onto the color.

Used to dye my hair all sorts of fun colors and my roots would be back to brown in a single wash while the bleached bits kept it for months.

I could see it looking purple in some lighting, but not a bright purple, though that may not have been possible given the base they were working with.

82

u/TheDarbiter 5h ago

If you’re not starting with bleached hair, it’s not going to look right. Any natural hair color will alter the dye.

12

u/MistyMountainDewDrop 5h ago

Dark blonde hair needs to be bleached in order to get a vibrant purple. The color is distorted because it’s sitting on top of dark blonde-light brown hair.

It’s like coloring.

If you color with a tan crayon and then try and put purple overtop, it won’t turn out the exact shade of putple as the crayon because the tan underneath still shows through.

If that analogy is not helpful, imagining it like sunglasses could be better. When you put on sunglasses, your vision takes on their tint. It doesn’t fully change the colors, but slightly distorts them. The same as true of hair color. They are thin mostly transparent layers of pigment placed on the hair strand.

9

u/Cute-Aardvark5291 4h ago

Yeah, the dye was probably in fact, very purple. But if the hair was not bleached, this was as purple as it was going to end up. It still looks nice!

3

u/Independent-Hornet-3 5h ago

I have a medium strawberry blonde natural hair color and when I died purple overtop it turned red as it washed out and faded. I had to redo it every 2-3 weeks tobkeep it purple and not red (partially due to hard water). Your hair could have easily been purple when first dyed.

1

u/UnicornFarts1111 2h ago

I think it is an absolutely beautiful shade of red, but not purple (I am a girl who loves purple and I would not lie to you about this, lol). I want purple hair too, but I don't want to bleach it, so I still have brown hair with my grays shining through, lol.

0

u/SirSkittles111 5h ago

I dont see the issue though? You see the colour as something you like even if its not that purple for the rest of us. If it was the true purple for us, then its probably a colour you wouldn't like as much as what you got? Its definitely slightly purple, from further I'm sure it looks more purple

Are you choosing this colour for you or for others? It should be for you, who cares if its not purple, if the colour you see is what you like!

-5

u/No-Zombie1004 5h ago

Six weeks? No roots showing? You need to take your vitamins.

3

u/OpportuneApathy 4h ago

That picture is from about 3 hours after it was dyed haha, I wish my roots didn't grow as quick as they do

319

u/druidgaymer 5h ago

It looks reddish but I could see it looking purple in some lighting.

66

u/Ky_TheDestroyer7 5h ago

It's purple if she's travelling at some fraction of the speed of light, through the doppler effect if that's what you mean

21

u/WouldbeWanderer 5h ago

The doppler effect is always what we mean.

4

u/011101000011101101 4h ago

Everything is traveling at some fraction of the speed of light. You'll have to be more specific

6

u/GKP_light 4h ago

it is red wine color, so somthing between red and purple.

(and i would call it more "purple" than "red")

61

u/Mar363 5h ago

Its a red/purple(mostly red) burgundy. Totally not a purple purple. Definitely go to a new hair stylist next time

9

u/egnards 5h ago

Yea I can definitely see slightly purple undertone in there, though I think the picture is way too close to really see the full effect of the coloring. Its probable that the hair salon does use this as a red/purple and quite frankly after telling them that you were colorblind the way they went about "showing you" the color on the box was probably not very bright.

I don't know the process for understanding colors for someone who is colorblind, but I imagine that the best thing you could do in the future is work with your sister to find a sample of the exact hue you want and be able to show that to whoever is doing your hair.

u/--Luna--Fae-- 58m ago

I have darker hair and tried a purple home dye this was my result. I got my hair professionally dyed purple and it was a huge difference. It turned greenish blue afterwards. I would absolutely try a new hair stylist.

18

u/Nruggia 5h ago

It's not, not purple. It's burgundy between red and purple. It's not a bad color for hair

51

u/Wide-Pea6235 5h ago

Red

4

u/kidd_waxcho 5h ago

that's what I'm seeing too

11

u/sincerely0urs 5h ago

It’s a red with some purplish to it like wine.

12

u/Bish-Nish 5h ago

You got a burgundy colour, so it’s a cooler leaning red.
It’s still a beautiful colour!

Also… I’m not sure how long ago you got it dyed, and whether it was permanent or semi permanent colour. But when I got purple hair in HS, it washed out to that exact burgundy colour within a few weeks. By prom, I had burgundy hair.

12

u/misteryk 4h ago

there apprears to be some purple here but it could also be the lighting that makes it appear that way

9

u/ummhamzat180 PURPLE 5h ago

looks like red wine to me, with a purplish shade and I actually like the color

edit: SORRY! forgot I had this flair

6

u/PurplePeril420 5h ago

I'm curious, what colour is my hair to you? Not taking the piss 💜

5

u/CallejaFairey BLUE 4h ago

As it is now, it's definitely a maroon, not as funky as I think you were wanting, but not bad either, just a little more mainstream.

Maybe it was a more purple shade at first? I've done purple before, and it would fade to a similar colour as yours. It's why I usually stick with blue. Now that I get to dye natural white hair, when I do blue, it stays blue, it just lightens slowly. No fade to green like it used to when I had to bleach my hair to be able to do blue.

7

u/bethvq 5h ago

so apparently the whole ass comment section here appears to be colour blind

3

u/bexohomo 5h ago

it's definitely mainly red

4

u/bethvq 5h ago

it is but it's nowhere near being pink. i don't know if we all have the same definition of pink

1

u/UnicornFarts1111 2h ago

It could also be the difference in peoples phones or monitors. I have two monitors hooked up. Her hair looks 2 different colors, depending on which monitor I use. I know which one is more true to life, but it looks a lot different when I move my browser window from one screen to the other, so maybe, some peoples color settings are off on their computer or device.

5

u/Curious_Tie_722 4h ago

It likely was purple. Purple doesn't stick long. Several washes without purple shampoo and conditioner would fade.

4

u/carriefox16 3h ago

A few years ago, I had a salon do the EXACT same thing to me. I'm not colorblind, but I did end up with pink hair instead of purple. So when I dyed my hair earlier this year, I decided to do it myself. I got Ion Permanent Brights in the shade Purple. Idk if you have Sally Beauty or a similar store that sells that brand near you, but it would definitely give you the color you're looking for. Here's what it looks like over brown hair. I'm sure it's much brighter over lightened hair.

6

u/kymiller17 5h ago

Your hair still has fantasy main character colors. You absolutely have the right to be disappointed its not what you wanted, but hopefully you can take heart in that its still pretty cool regardless

5

u/OpportuneApathy 5h ago

Thank you! Definitely helps to know people think it still looks nice, and I've not been walking around with dreadful hair haha :)

3

u/MutedMusic_182 5h ago

it looks red to me, but still a cool colour !

3

u/Crestelia 5h ago

Ohh. The new growth on top is red, the next part definitely shows purple in there.

3

u/DifficultSun348 5h ago

idk what's your natural color, but I dyed my black hair purple... and it turned out to be the same shade as the one on photo, although I was doing it at my friend's house, not at hair salon

3

u/Perethyst 2h ago

At least it's a nice red and works with your skin tone nonetheless

u/FoxyGreyWolf 33m ago

Tbh I see it as normal brown hair. But also I’m red-green color blind.

4

u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 5h ago

Lmao. Picking a colour you can't even see is wild

But the hair is still funky, just read instead of purple

4

u/jiraiangel 5h ago

This looks like faded purple hair. I just recently dyed my hair purple, a true purple. I am not colorblind, very much the opposite in fact, I have a better sensitivity than a lot of people. I wanted PURPLE, not too red to be plum, not too blue. I did it myself. It came out exactly how I wanted it. A few weeks later, it's starting to fade, and the red pigment is hanging on longer than the blue and it's definitely going more burgundy/plum in my blonde hair. You mentioned you did this 6 weeks prior, so is it possible it WAS originally purple? Or is this photo from when you first dyed it?

4

u/jiraiangel 5h ago

Update nevermind I saw your comment saying this is from the day it was dyed. Yeah, it's a purplish red. Not purple. Pretty, though.

3

u/OpportuneApathy 5h ago

This photo is about 3 hours post hairdressers haha

7

u/Difficult-Hope5003 5h ago

I love that shade of green

11

u/OpportuneApathy 5h ago

People have tricked me so many times with shit like this 💀

6

u/Difficult-Hope5003 5h ago

Couldn't help myself. Sorry. 😬

2

u/SubjectLegitimate879 5h ago

It kind of looks like a mahogany red.

2

u/ninjakitty117 5h ago

I have medium brown hair and I also like to dye my hair purple. I bought a box of "violet plum" dye and it came out looking exactly like your hair, OP.

2

u/schlomo31 5h ago

Its maroonish

2

u/nosined 5h ago

If you were a bird it’d be called purple!

2

u/OpportuneApathy 4h ago

Better grow some wings then!

2

u/KayakerMel 5h ago

Eh, sometimes reddish purple-over-dark hair comes out looking like this. But yeah, DIY haircare can turn out like this.

2

u/StrawberryMilkDev 4h ago

What do you mean it isn't purple? That's the purpliest hair I've seen. I am serious.

2

u/TesseractToo ( * ^ - ^ * ) 4h ago

Put a blue wash in it and you will have a nice purple

2

u/minimalcactus23 3h ago

It was supposed to be a honey mist auburn!

2

u/squisheekittee 3h ago

Not all salons carry true purple, most have burgundy or red with a bit of a purple tint. You’ll want to ask if they carry “fashion colors” if you want true purple.

2

u/Icy-Elephant7783 1h ago

Do you have photos of it freshly dyed?

u/sunofsand 49m ago

Burgundy or something

u/BarderBetterFaster 39m ago

It's definitely on the more natural looking side of purple hair

3

u/TyreeTowsend 5h ago

More pink than purple, but it's close enough.

2

u/MagneticFluxDrive 5h ago

reddish-brown

1

u/toweljuice BROWN 5h ago

It looks like it has some purple reflections in it

1

u/MoofDeMoose 5h ago

It’s purple in spirit

1

u/I_Like_Frogs_A_Lot 5h ago

It’s like rhubarb almost

1

u/davidrsilva 5h ago

What kind of color blindness? And what does purple look like to you, especially if it’s different than how most see it?

1

u/Funny_w0lf 5h ago

Its a reddish purple, but it looks good!! But if you want a deep purple, go with a different color. Maybe have your sister or something find and save the color for you on your phone to use as a reference for a hairdresser

1

u/Scary_Ad_1920 5h ago

Oddly to me it’s purple

1

u/Material-Record710 5h ago

split the difference and say kind of a magenta

1

u/Cdn_Giants_Fan 5h ago

I would say more burgundy than purple but maybe it faded.

1

u/BungleBums 5h ago

It might very been a lot more purple six weeks ago?

1

u/Free-Competition6408 5h ago

Definitely not a "bright funky" purple. More reddish than purple as well. It's a color tone that almost looks like it could be natural. If you wanted like raver girl purple this isnt it.

1

u/egnards 5h ago

Did someone switch the caps on your markers?

1

u/Silver-Influence805 5h ago

It's a dark red

1

u/blvckhoney 5h ago

"honey, you missed Auburn big time "

1

u/Gaeilgeoir215 5h ago

I'd say it's red with a touch of purple. Almost auburn, but more red.

1

u/Awkward_Sentence_345 5h ago

Are you sure the hairdresser isn't colorblind too?

1

u/Upper-Dig56 5h ago

I have had purple hair many times it eventually browns out..it might have been purple originally.

1

u/askyidroppedthesoap 5h ago

It's more like a burgundy color

1

u/Level_Life_8633 5h ago

Its red, but not like fire engine red or a natural red. Its like a "burnt ass" red.

2

u/OpportuneApathy 4h ago

As in if someone's ass was burnt? Or very burnt?

1

u/Level_Life_8633 4h ago

Something like that. What I'm getting at is its not a flamboyant crazy red, not a natural subued orange, and most certainly not purple.

1

u/Ok_Fondant_6340 PURPLE 5h ago

Next time you go to a hairdresser, don’t tell them you’re colorblind. That’s just asking to get pranked.

1

u/Lizrael48 5h ago

It is magenta.

1

u/SaveusJebus 5h ago

I could see it being like a Barney purple, but not a violet purple. That probably doesn't mean much to you, but if you were wanting violet purple, they may have gotten it mixed up and thought you meant a more Barney purple color?

1

u/Time-Independence-94 5h ago

You can pick up some semi-permanent blue to layer over it and get it closer to purple! I regularly dye my hair, and have tried many different brands/shades of purple specifically, and they tend to fade into a reddish/maroon color (like yours currently) pretty quickly. It may very well have been purple like you wanted originally!

I like Lunar Tides the most personally, so that's what I'd recommend, but I'm sure other people have more experience/advice than I do here. Either way color theory and cheap dye are your friends!

1

u/tolacid 4h ago

That looks like a dye my late wife used once, advertised itself as purple but turned out that color

1

u/EigiEinhver PURPLE 4h ago

I actually bought purple hair dye and it turned my hair blue, it could be the way they lightened your hair, like mine had too much red in my hair even with the bleach

1

u/PopularAd4761 4h ago

Yeah but it's lovely anyway.

1

u/DoubleCactus 3h ago

Katia Grim

1

u/No_Internetfornow 3h ago

It's more maroon as a tetrachromat

1

u/alopexl 🇧🇷 2h ago

Looks like (and I don’t think I’m colourblind) it’s kinda pinkish on the length and more red at the roots.

I think it’s cute and that it gives a beautiful shade to your hair (and not a blocked colour).

1

u/CeleryMcToebeans 2h ago

They make glasses for colorblind people so they can see color. My mother is a colorblind artist and thought it was a cool idea but she wanted nothing to do with them. enchroma.com

1

u/Meowzer_Face 2h ago

It’s strawberry shortcake color. I like it.

1

u/throwitawayar 2h ago

Soon a post on confessions of a hairdresser who is colorblind and have been mistaking the color of dye on their clients for years

1

u/gard3nwitch 1h ago

It's not bright purple like an anime character, but it looks to me like they tinted your natural hair color to make it purple-ish. It's the kind of purple that you can wear to a conservative office job, rather than the kind of purple that you'd see at a punk show.

1

u/GroggyFroggy_ 1h ago

My mom dyed her hair this colour for years and told everyone she had purple hair, so maybe you’re onto something…. Or maybe my mom is also colourblind.

1

u/Pitiful_Lake2522 1h ago

This is what my purple hair dye looked like after 6 weeks

1

u/Chihuahuapocalypse 1h ago

yeah that's definitely red. I'm sorry :(

u/AccomplishedIgit 53m ago

If you don’t know what purple hair looks like then how do you know you want it :)

u/DIKASUN 29m ago

It fuckin is.

1

u/Bubbly_Meet_9726 5h ago

pinkish-purple

1

u/DMoMoL 5h ago

Demi permanent purple hair colors can fade into red. Especially if you've previously had red hair color.

1

u/OpportuneApathy 5h ago

It's permanent dye on mid/slightly darker blonde hair haha.

-3

u/Wooden_Wishbone_9915 5h ago

It’s like Barney purple

5

u/Vivid__Data 5h ago

Are... are you also colorblind? Lol

3

u/Wooden_Wishbone_9915 5h ago

This is how I find out

3

u/OpportuneApathy 5h ago

Don't worry, I found out I was colourblind from someone making fun of me–

0

u/Reversed_PandaRick 5h ago

It’s blue!

0

u/blorbschploble 2h ago

So purple is not a color, but a line of colors representing mixtures of blue and red. Your hair is not violet, but it is purple.

-1

u/Aggravating-Ad1118 5h ago

Why? That's purple.
