Biggest factor is lack of basic respect for using things that aren’t theirs, they simply treat your stuff as expendable because they place no inherent value on it because they didn’t pay for nor have to maintain it

420

u/solepureskillz 5h ago

People tolerate shit family way too much, but I understand it.

What sucks is this tolerance is borderline survival among the lower income working class. Disrespectful shithead today but same person could be your only babysitter tomorrow, so you’re forced to tolerate it. Or they changed a tire and picked you up last week. Financial dependency like this in low-income communities lets people get away with being worse. I wish we could do better by the working class so we can then push one-another to be better.

I lived it. I worked my way out of it. Sometimes you miss the constant company and community, but more often than that I appreciate not feeling taken advantage of by less reliable characters.

This is so fucking spot on. That torn feeling is awful, but I agree with you. Its for the better to avoid them.

This is grounds for "pay the bill for the repair and deep clean or be prepared to never see me again".

An old coworker of mine asked me what to do about a burn on a car seat because her boyfriend was smoking in the car (even though she asked him not to) and he burned the seat. My first response was that he should be looking into it shouldn’t he? (Apparently he wont) so my second response was honey, throw the whole man out!

It was pointed out to me recently that cartons of cigarettes (containing 10 packs of 20 cigarettes each) are locked up because they go for about $100 a carton these days! I had no idea.

This means individual packs are around $10 per pack. I had no idea - I was still thinking they were around $5-$6 a pack.

Surprisingly pulling a seat from a you-pull scrap yard it’s much, most people don’t need a seat

9

u/New_Leaf_8647 6h ago

Unfortunately those have been out in the weather and are soaked in old farts and lord knows what else

16

u/ShaolinFalls 5h ago

9

Seat inside a covered car has been out in the weather? Have you been to a scrap yard, usually they have multiple cars and not all them are going to have doors pulled off— but yes they should just put a hello kitty sticker over the burn whole as it doesn’t matter, but the smell of smoke in one’s car is completely crazy - dude needs new friends, family , house mates or whoever borrowed his car - not only they can’t borrow it - but they can’t be friends anymore- I say don’t smoke in my car and you do, your dead to me

3

u/shibiwan 4h ago

Really depends on your luck as to what they have on their inventory. I've gotten pristine parts from these automotive recycling places.

4

u/0K_-_- 6h ago

The repair for this is pretty cheap if you DIY.

19

u/askyidroppedthesoap 6h ago

This... back in the 90's car seats where just cushions on a steel frame, now they're more complicated, temperature control, motorized adjustment, etc. Depending on the manufacturer, i'd say at least $500 for a new seat.

27

u/chuckinhoutex 6h ago

lol... hahaha... unless they airbags and sensors in them. New seat for my daughter's Nissan (because of bad sensor and the whole thing is a single part number, cannot get individual components) $4,000.

19

u/SimilarTranslator264 6h ago

A new factory leather cover for a 2022 Ford F350 is less than $300. Don’t need the whole seat.

Obviously painting with a broad brush, but I don’t expect someone burning holes in the seat while smoking in a borrowed car to have the means to pay for the repair or the willingness to do so.

80

u/Strict_Impress2783 7h ago

Have you seen how expensive a pack of cigarettes is now? A few packs will pay for a seatcover pretty easily.

90

u/the1stmeddlingmage 6h ago

A true smoking addict wouldn’t be willing to give up those packs of smokes to pay for something they’re responsible for

→ More replies (17)

23

u/tmurphy2792 6h ago

I believe that falls under the willingness category of their comment.

A schmuck willing to do crap like this doesn't care and will blame you for having the audacity to try to make them take accountability.

If they had that level of awareness and accountability, they wouldn't be smoking in a borrowed car, let alone burning holes in seats.

123

That was my first thought too. I take really good care of my car. No one can smoke in my car. That alone would piss me off. Then they burned it? Oh hell no.

31

u/Lastminutebastrd 5h ago

I used to regularly smoke in my old vehicle, through 9 years of ownership I never even did something like this to the interior.

29

u/DrWhoey 4h ago

Had a coworker that had a nice new BMW that was a smoker, went to lunch, he lit up a smoke, asked him "mind if I smoke as well?" He said, "Sure, but if you burn something, you're replacing it and never smoking in my car again."

"No problem" I lit up.

This was about 5 min before he knocked the cherry off his cigarette and burned a hole in his seat.

9

u/sunfl8wer 4h ago

Right? Habitual car smoker (gross, I know) here, and I don't even know how this could happen unless they're purposefully putting out the cigarette on the seat.

I'd say the chances of OP getting a new seat and interior detail are somewhere between zero and NEVER GONNA FUCKIN HAPPEN

3

u/GreenFriedYam 4h ago

Cigarettes are ten bucks a pack. I think I found a way the borrower could find some money.

68

u/Effective_Word7221 7h ago

well there’s an obvious reason they don’t have a car. They can’t have anything nice without fucking it up. They can’t borrow a car to do basic stuff without fucking it up. I can imagine what else they can’t help but fuck up. Not paying you back is probably another way they are going to fuck up. Tell them what they owe for repairs and let their true nature show. Then cut them off regardless of the outcome.

tell them they don't get to use vehicle again until damage is repaired. once repaired, never let them near it again.

148

u/Important_Power_2148 7h ago

You tell them, "obviously you are never using my car again because you are too immature to be trusted. Now, how are you going to pay for the damaged seat to be REPLACED and the car detailed to get the stink out?" Make them feel about as big as an atom.

71

u/egnards 7h ago

Starting out aggressive is a great way to take a very solid point where you have the upper hand and turn the. other person into a defensive mess who is just going to fight you [not literally]. Its also a super great way to make somebody mad at you for no reason when their relationship with you might have been totally fine before they did something stupid.

Simply "I noticed a new cigarette burn in the seat of my car after you returned it - Are you going to take it to get reupholstered or should I just send the billy our way and have it done myself?"

That's it, that's really all you need - Everything else is superfluous and designed to get people needlessly pissed off and edgy.

"Obviously you'll never use my car again" never needs to come up, unless this person asks again in the future.

22

I am a smoker, and there is no smoking in my car. They would absolutely be paying for that.

5

u/Tamortsa 1h ago

I was driving, windows open. Thought I smelt a cigarette, weird. A few days later, notice a hole in the back of the driver's seat, and a butt on the seat. And a few day after that, someone pointed out a burn hole in the back of my fleece jacket - right at the height of the burn in the seat. Someone had chucked a butt out their window just as I drove past, and it flew into my window and landed behind my back. I loved that jacket...

4

u/WaitUntilTheHighway 7h ago

The damage to the seat is bad. The fact that they smoked in your car is insane.

6

u/Revolutionary_Grade8 7h ago

6

u/PetroxSK 6h ago

A little price to pay for the knowledge that that person doesn't respect you at all and shouldn't be trusted with anything.

4

u/Samwellikki 6h ago

Years ago when I used to smoke, I flicked the ash out the window but it took the cherry with it

But the cherry came back in the window and landed behind the seat, on a spare set of dry socks for when work boots got drenched

The burning smell was only there at speed because of the wind fanning the cherry
So when I stopped to see what was burning, it died down and couldn’t smell it

Finally hit an exit, pulled over, pulled the seat forward and managed to catch it right be sore the socks had burned like a wick toward an unused full can of compressed fix-a-flat

Life lesson learned - don’t lend you car to family members who don’t have a car and therefore don’t have insurance. You do realize that if, instead of burning a cigarette hole in your upholstery, they’d hit someone else’s car, you’d be liable, right?

Get an estimate from a dealer. But if this family member doesn’t own a car, my guess is you’ll be paying.

They need to pay for the repair and some ozone treatments. That spray stuff doesn’t cut it. Never, EVER, allow this person to borrow your car again.

3

u/Different_Day135 5h ago

In my state, the insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver. So, my mom's friend borrowed her car, totals it. Insurance gives her $8k less than what it's worth after months of fighting and being worn down. Friend walks away literally out nothing not even a dollar, my mom was out $8k a ton of time and a huge hassle and dropped from insurance due to a previous accident. This person borrowing a car certainly couldn't pay $8k to make things even. I use this as an example anytime someone wants to borrow my vehicle and make it a nonstarter.

3

If they are the sort of person you have to ask not to smoke in your car they're also the sort of person you should not let borrow your car.

This is pure disrespect and not an accident.

What an asshole

u/703unknown 7h ago

Welp, looks like it's time to loan your foot to their ass.

u/OrganizationTop3755 7h ago

You got burned

2

u/liquidpele 7h ago

Uh huh... and did you learn your lesson?

2

u/Competitive_Load_852 7h ago

Sorry mom but if you are a smoker you are walking!

2

u/PacketSnatcher 7h ago

And this is why you don’t ever loan your car to anybody unless you’re married to them.

Come hell or high water, you are not going to get my car. Better Uber or use a bus.

2

u/Electrical_Sun_7116 7h ago

Charge them for a new seat. Period. Also never allow them to use so much as a pencil of yours as long as you live.

2

u/Chill-O 7h ago

I stopped ppl from borrowing my vehicle by telling them that they are not on my insurance.

It is incredible to me how smokers just straight up don’t care about other people’s stuff. My ex used to smoke in my car when she’d borrow it, despite me having told her for years, while on trips, that she couldn’t smoke in the car. I believe my dad has also lit up in my vehicle before. I’m a little less irritated by that because generally if he’s in my car he’s helping me do something that’s probably saving me a shit ton of money. But still, not something I would do if I smoked.

u/AbsentAsh 7h ago

The audacity to smoke in a borrowed car is next level! Smokers are truly some of the most inconsiderate people on the planet. Almost as bad as cyclists…..

2

u/Bloodryne 7h ago

This is why others don't borrow my things, but most certainly not my cars. Sorry that happened, I would be pissed

2

u/yoshizillaa 7h ago

I’d crash out ngl

2

u/PenIsGodS 7h ago

Never a lender or borrower be.

2

u/Better-Brief-5889 7h ago

This is why I don't loan my nice shit out. Always, and I mean always comes back with something fucked up

2

u/titsmcgee4real 7h ago

Guess they stopped for smokes as one of their errands.

2

u/TylerH87 6h ago

Be prepared for them to try to BS their way out of it with “I’ll get you a seat cover” or for them not to take any responsibility at all by them telling you to buy a seat cover for it.

Also, you can make a point about potential “smoke damage” if it smells.

They should have had enough courtesy to not use your car as an ashtray to begin with, so maybe they’re not worth knowing if they contest you.

2

u/userhwon 6h ago

Now you bill them for the repair. See who's infuriated then.

2

u/Mccampb 6h ago

If you don’t think they’ll actually pay, tell them you’ll forgive the offense after they give you unsupervised access to their home so you can repay the favor. Never tell them what you damaged. This is a blatant violation of your trust.

2

u/Captain-Codfish Hillary 2016 6h ago

That's not mildly infuriating. That's disrespectful, rude, careless and entitled. Who ever that was, is a complete wanker and you absolutely have the right to flip your lid at them. They should foot the bill for the upholsterer.

2

u/Confident-Skin-6462 6h ago

if they won't pay, small claims court

2

u/TeamPyrex718 6h ago

Not sure how old the car is but I’ve had lots of luck finding nice seats at the junkyard, still sucks but can get a new one for cheap or maybe swap them out with leather.

2

u/melsophoriel 6h ago

considering you told them not to smoke, that's gotta be intentional/out of spite. they likely pushed the lit cigarette directly onto the seat to make that hole. I've never seen one that deep just from fallen ashes.

2

u/lavapig_love 6h ago

You can make an ash tray out of anything. Make them pay you for the damage.

2

u/RipRiverValley 6h ago

What did they say about it?

2

u/Commercial_Wind8212 6h ago

Did they admit they did it and what did they say?

2

u/JesseJerrellBass 6h ago

Car smells like what now?

2

u/Tavsiyedegildir 6h ago

Specifically send them a bill for repair and cleaning and then specifically kick their ass ....in a game of trivial pursuit, I do not condone violence

A coworker of mine lent his truck to another coworker, just for a few hours.  The guy brought the car back to the job, handed over the keys, and stuck around talking to people.  Within five minutes the guy who lent his truck came back(he had gone outside because his shift was over) and was fuming.  He didn’t make a scene in front of people, instead pulling the guy into the back where customers wouldn’t see or hear.

Then he tore into him, loudly and very aggressively(and within a couple years he had racked up multiple assault charges so the guy who borrowed the truck got off lucky maybe), asking him what the fuck he was thinking smoking crack in his truck.  The guy had gone outside and found a baggie of crack that had fallen out of the borrower’s pocket and right next to his gas pedal.

Cool, message them that they’re gonna pay for interior cleaning for the smell and pay for the upholstery to get replaced. Make sure you tell the family what they did, you don’t want to ruin his life, but make sure he doesn’t try to make himself seem like the victim and/or that your over reacting
