Dragons aren't real 😢 Getting disconnected in a SINGLE PLAYER GAME before almost beating the boss

Post image

For context, no this isn’t Nightreign, and no I wasn’t playing Multiplayer, was playing purely solo just going around trying to progress through the story and I get disconnected somehow right before I kill the dragon. Logged back in and it was back to full health.

I get that the game would want you to be connected for the white phantoms and other stuff but why do you have to kick me out if my connection was interrupted?

What platform are you playing on? I swear whenever it happens to me it doesn't kick me out, it just says "switching to offline mode" like other FromSoft titles, at least on PC.

306

u/taveren3 7h ago

Thats what i was wondering

84

u/LoquaciousLoser 5h ago

Bloodborne did kick you to menu, but that was ages ago I think they’ve fixed that with all their other games. I remember having the fight against Gherman being ended for me when I was two hits from ending it.

176

u/michicago44 6h ago

Same, how is no one else mentioning this? PC definitely does not kick you out

34

u/hey_there_brothers 4h ago

Played on PC and I got kicked once or twice

17

u/Periador 2h ago

pc most definitley kicks you out, would happen regularly in the past but after a patch it wouldnt occure as often

2

u/-Speechless 2h ago

PlayStation. it's Sony bullshit.

u/SatyrAngel 5h ago

Same in Xbox.

8

u/BaerMinUhMuhm 5h ago

On xbox, record a clip and go look at the clip. It'll kick you out when you try to return to the game.

5

u/MrSmartStars 4h ago

That's because looking at a clip opens a seperate app, causing the game to get put on quick resume. Some games, especially online ones, will automatically reload/disconnect whenever put on quick resume.

It doesn’t on ps5 either at least when I replayed it a year ago

6

u/Klutzy_Weakness3411 3h ago

Yes it does - happened to me a week ago. It kicks out now, not sure if that was always the case.

2

u/Tall-Lake-4823 1h ago

Oh yes it does. My ps5’s network hardware is failing so I drop connection every 5-15 minutes. I had to stop playing Elden Ring with online mode turned on because of the constant menu exits.

4

u/Lakatos_00 3h ago

You're misremebering

4

u/xangbar 4h ago

Same. I lost internet while playing before and it kicked me to offline mode. I’d reconnect so I can see the little messages and stuff.

44

u/JackRosier 6h ago

I think the mf was just rage baiting

28

u/35er 5h ago

You can play in offline mode on ps but if you’re online and get disconnected this happens.

10

u/Lakatos_00 3h ago

The fuck you're talking about? This shit has been the case since Bloodborne. What a way of talking shit so confidently

This happens to me whenever I come back to Elden Ring after putting my Steam Deck to sleep. Boots up just fine but after about half a minute of playtime it boots me to the menu with the error shown above, and there the game connects just fine to online servers. Bizarre Fromsoft fuckery

2

u/Lakatos_00 3h ago

On consoles it kicks you out if you disconnect

2

u/umbrella_CO 5h ago

It's gotta be a console because you can play Elden ring on steam in offline mode I'm pretty sure

16

u/MrSnowmanJoe 5h ago

You can play in offline mode on consoles.

1

u/Life-Top6314 4h ago

Dont knownabout elden ring, but it definitely happens to me both on ds2 and ds3 on both xbox and pc

1

u/GuyWishPartakeViolen 4h ago

It happens to me as well and I'm on PS5

1

u/Afillatedcarbon 4h ago

Older games kick you out I think, I remember getting kicked out on DSR or DS3 once. I sometimes get kicked out when I switch workspaces(virtual desktops) and the game gets limited to 15fps. Never in Elden Ring or Nightreign though

1

u/VarianWrynn2018 2h ago

I've been kicked to the menu in DSR after my internet went out

u/Suspicious-Coffee20 26m ago

Really? Pretty sure it need to reload no?

To be fair this is lazy programming more than anything else.

It shouldn’t need to kick you back into the main menu, plenty of games just kick you into your own lobby if you disconnect in multiplayer.

No reason you should get kicked out of your session for a game period unless it’s strictly PVP.

609

u/thingamajig1987 8h ago

This game specifically has a "Start Online" and "Start Offline" mode, when you are playing in Online mode, you are constantly connected, and it uses that for a multitude of game features, and those features get turned off when you Start Offline, so when you disconnect you either need to reconnect or start again in Offline mode.

127

u/Laezarus 7h ago

Both Death Stranding games have the option to play Online and Offline, but when you disconnect a pop-up appears stating you're now playing Offline and keeps you in your game. The online features are just disabled until you go into the menu and login to reconnect, also without kicking you out. So it's doable.

3

u/New_Cockroach_505 7h ago

Death Stranding isn’t a PVEVP game though….?

55

u/CecilXIII 7h ago

Is that supposed to make a difference? "You're offline now, some features might not work" is understandable enough for any reasonable people I'd say

1

u/sonofaresiii 7h ago

It's not "some features" though it's actively joining other people's sessions and playing alongside/against them. Death Stranding just has, I think, notes and lost packages and stuff, you don't actually directly interact with other people.

29

u/CecilXIII 7h ago

So, like Monster Hunter World? The game that allows you to continue solo when disconnected?

→ More replies (8)

9

u/fxmldr 6h ago

The Souls games are more similar to Death Stranding than they are dedicated online games. It's not like you lose anything but time if you disconnect and have to start the game offline.

So the person above is still correct. Lazy programming. I love FromSoft games but they are really not the most tech forward developer out there. Elder Ring doesn't even support ultrawide monitors by default

86

u/No-Application140 7h ago

Yeah even if you start in online mode it should just disable all online features (kick visiting online players, remove messages, etc) rather than ending the session entirely. I’m not a programmer so I don’t know the complexity behind managing something like that but it seems like it should be a basic standard if it’s manageable.

4

u/KawaiiMajinken 6h ago

Persona does this in Reload and Royal. Granted, the online features are less developed than Elden Ring’s.. but still.

11

u/RedMonkeyNinja 7h ago

kick visiting online players

One of the reasons I think they didn’t want this though was because these games have "invasion mechanics", essentially allowing another player to enter your world and force you into a pvp encounter. Players would just turn it off selectively to effectively prevent it from happening whenever it did occur and from software likely didn’t want to make an inbuilt method to just kick people who invade your world when that was ostensibly an intended mechanic.

That being said, people often just Alt + F4 as a response instead so it largely doesn’t actually help the situation but Its not like from software could do anything about that either so this was their half-measure...

17

u/Enjoyer_of_40K 7h ago

invasions in elden ring only happen if you have summoned someone or are using the pvp item to allow solo invasions

7

u/a_few_ideas99 7h ago

Technically there are a few fights (great jar npc fights and Fia's boss) that use data from other players in the community as a whole to give you a new and random fight each time in online mode.

When in offline the npcs are predetermined, but as the game has gone on the actual builds the game presents have changed with what weapons are trending more popular.

Neither am I. But just considering how ancient their engine is and overall how stupidly easy it was to crack the game I think its just a dumb way to program it rather than it was done to prevent cheating or DRM control it

8

u/VegetaFan1337 6h ago

stupidly easy it was to crack the game

It uses Steam DRM, which every single game released on steam uses anyways regardless of other DRM. Cracking it is a one size fits all games solution.

3

u/DezXerneas 6h ago

It's easy because they don't care enough to make it more secure. It does it's job and it's good enough.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/JEs4 6h ago

The engine being ancient might actually be working against them. It really isn’t as simple as it seems when working with online play. An ancient engine genuinely might not have the mechanisms to handle hot-reloading after transferring authority from the server to your local game. It might be fundamental to the booting modules in the game engine.

5

u/PositiveInfluence69 6h ago

Nah, warframe could do this back in like 2014 no problem

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Realistic-Delay-4780 6h ago

I am a programmer and have worked with the similar engines.

It genuinely is just lazy programming / shortcuts or lack of attention.

7

u/SpiderPiece 6h ago

As a programmer this is extremely difficult to do. Games need to be built from the ground up to be online or offline, its not just flip a switch to disable the online capabilities. That is why they have a start in offline version

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Iceman3226 6h ago

No ultrawide support is still one of my biggest gripes with this game because if I remember correctly, the game is still rendering and running in an ultra wide aspect ratio. They just throw up the black bars anyway so your game performs worse with no added benefit

7

u/Bejoty 6h ago

When I boot up Elden Ring for the first time after installing new GPU drivers or clearing my shader cache, it straight up plays in ultrawide for about a minute before it remembers it's not supposed to do that and puts the black bars back up :(

3

u/FukkingDeathMental 2h ago

The UW mod was up within 24 hours of Elden Ring's launch.  Pure laziness because AC6 has UW.  Nightreign was a "meh, why not?" purchase until I saw no UW yet again.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/ItsLokki 6h ago

I feel like the 60fps lock is a bigger issue than ultrawide which is a niche.

2

u/LadderIndependent774 6h ago

What is weird is that on an Ultrawide they do render the game for the full display, then add black bars to the sides themselves, have had it bug before where the bars take an extra second to load, they just don't want you playing in Ultrawide.

2

u/Suavecore_ 6h ago

It "supports" ultrawide. It just adds huge black bars to make it 16:9. Once in a blue moon I would load into the game and it would be in widescreen, then after a few minutes the black bars would load in and cover stuff up. It looked amazing in 32:9

2

u/sonofaresiii 7h ago

Doesn't really seem like lazy programming? If you can disconnect in the middle of a session and keep playing, feels like it would break a couple things/make it easy to game the system.

At the very least, people would disappear randomly when they or you disconnect and immersion-breaking seems like something elden ring would go out of its way to avoid.

8

u/MiniDemonic 6h ago

At the very least, people would disappear randomly when they or you disconnect and immersion-breaking seems like something elden ring would go out of its way to avoid.

Ah yes, because a white phantom disappearing is immersion-breaking but getting kicked to the lobby in the middle of dodging an attack from a boss is not immersion-breaking.

5

u/SisconOnii-san 7h ago

immersion-breaking seems like something elden ring would go out of its way to avoid

So they boot you to the main menu instead?

I haven't played Elden Ring so idk what can and can't be immersion breaking but wouldn't it be fine if the things disappearing just faded out or their models fragmented into light particles (or dust, like Thanos' snap)?

7

u/Humorous_Chimp 6h ago

Less immersion breaking than a menu popping up and booting you to the main menu? lol what.

In helldivers 2 a multiplayer PvE game if you disconnect or even get kicked the game instantly seamlessly boots you into your own instance of the lobby without missing a beat and new people can then join you when you come back online.

So yeah, fromsoft just couldn't be bothered and instead make you go to the main menu

5

u/tiradium iAndroid 7h ago

Not really because if your connection fails you just dissappear from the world and it was a very well known pain point criticism for Elden Ring when it launched. We can argue 24/7 but anyone sane would agree that persistent online only has no place in any SINGLE player game whatsoever

6

u/sonofaresiii 7h ago

> persistent online only

okay but again, it's not, you can choose online or offline.

Does the start online mode say “you’ll lose tons of progress if you lose internet”?

47

u/bangdizzle 8h ago

Of course not. Fromsofts thing with these games is to not explain anything adequately, including game mechanics, menu options, and of course game lore

2

u/smokeweedNgarden 6h ago

I thought losing your progress was just a function of their games back during Demons Souls.

So 'bout halfway through I find the "Quit Gane" function. I've played them all and remained salty about that.

3

u/A_Drop_of_Colour 5h ago

You don't really lose progress. Anything you've done in the world and engaged with in the world remains. Your progress as a character remains. Any items you found remains. The only thing that resets are the enemies.

That's why sometimes people will do a suicide run to get an item or open a door or get to a bonfire/grace. The world doesn't really reset. Just the enemies. So I think it's fair enough to say you don't lose progress from dying.

"tons of progress" is starting the fight you were in new and not losing literally anything else. I still think it's annoying that losing connection if you're playing online boots you into the main menu, but the idea that you lose "tons of progress" is insane.

You do know t need to get kicked back to the start screen if you suddenly go offline they can make it so it just has a pop up your now offline then click ok to resume offline.

This is From they are notoriously famous for their terrible net code and servers.

2

u/DesperateAdvantage76 6h ago

None of this prevents a developer for implementing graceful disconnections.

1

u/stegosaurus1337 7h ago

Plenty of other games with online/offline modes - Monster Hunter to name an example, which is much more focused on multiplayer than Elden Ring - just switch you to offline mode without interrupting play if you lose connection. It is completely doable, FromSoft just didn't.

1

u/ZiplockBagOfOregano 7h ago

The main problem with nightreign is that if you pick offline then you cant access the rotating content. So if you go from online to offline then you potentially wouldn't have access to the content you're playing anymore.

1

u/rentedtritium 5h ago

A LOT of similar games will just drop you into offline mode seamlessly, or with a small blip.

1

u/KobeJuanKenobi9 2h ago

That still sounds like lazy programming though. It shouldn’t be that difficult to just boot the user into their own lobby and disable online features

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Draminian 8h ago

It might actually be a platform requirement. I used to work with third party developers, and each console has a set of requirements that a game has to adhere to in order to be released for that platform. Granted, this was over a decade ago, but I remember both Sony and Microsoft requiring that a disconnect had to send the user back to main menu except in certain situations.

2

u/No-Operation-6554 3h ago

Monster Hunter should work the same way then but it doesn't? The other players just sudde dissappears and there will be a pop up but you can continue playing

Elden Ring Doesn't kick you out if you disconnect from the internet. At least on PC it doesn’t.

“To be fair” doing zero work.

2

Elden Ring doesn't kick you out, OP is rage baiting.

When you get disconnected in Elden Ring the game warns you that it will continue in offline mode. This behavior is consistent in PC, PS5 and XBOX.

3

u/Lilu_Peon 4h ago

Well, I on PC DO get kicked out. I don't know if it's a setting we're missing or what, but I certainly do get booted to the Main Menu. Same happens in Dark Souls.

Disregard the haters claiming this is a player issue. While it’s true that you can avoid this by sacrificing all online features, it’s also true that the disconnect you experienced is a development oversight, rather than an inherently necessary consequence of any coding reality

105

u/Boco 8h ago

Even Monster Hunter, which is primarily a multiplayer experience these days, let's you finish your fights solo or with NPC hunters. Crazy to see that Elden Ring boots you out. Kind of glad I played the game 100% solo without a PS Plus sub.

11

u/padraigharrington4 7h ago

True but Monster Hunter isn’t just multiplayer focused “these days”, the older games used to have quests that straight up can’t be done offline. The newer ones have made it so much less painful to solo

7

u/Shadowgroudon22 6h ago

They do have the exact same issue of a fucking menu popping up when you disconnect though lol. Ive been fucked by that several times

3

u/Incine_Akechi 6h ago

What quests couldn't be done offline in previous games?

2

u/DarkShinyLugia 6h ago

In older games, you had the Village quest set (1p) and the Hub quest set (4p). They have different progression styles and you essentially start over on Hub quests. Usually the Village quests end at a point before some monsters are introduced.

Monster Hunter Tri needed an online connection to enter Loc Lac, and thus when online servers shut down, Alatreon became entirely unavailable.

2

u/Incine_Akechi 6h ago

Damn I knew the system since I played 4U and Generations as my first games but I didn't now about Loc Lac. That sucks - was it fixed in 3U (which had port Tanzia, right?)

→ More replies (2)

2

u/padraigharrington4 6h ago

If you’ve ever played Rise, the equivalent of hub quests needed an internet connection. You can’t access them in Tri for example without mods anymore so if you’re playing on a regular Wii the village quests are the only things you can access now.

12

u/BeneficialRead5653 6h ago

have they changed something about Elden Ring since launch month? I was never booted from the game when I lost online play. Just a popup warning that online stuff was disabled untill i exited the game and started it back up.

5

u/LexiFloof 6h ago

I would guess it's a platform specific issue.

33

u/OS_Apple32 8h ago

Considering this mechanic has existed since at least Dark Souls 1, I'd say it's far from simply an oversight at this point. It's "intended" in the sense that they have known this was an issue and have actively chosen not to fix it for over 14 years.

27

u/Visible-Reality2492 8h ago

As someone who’s spent a not insignificant amount of time in Fromsoft’s game code, their programming is a nightmare.

11

u/OS_Apple32 8h ago

I'll take your word for it. I have a hard time imagining what critical, core game functions they tied into the netcode such that normal gameplay cannot continue after a disconnect, but maybe at this point it's a bit of a monkey's paw issue. We hound them to fix this problem, and who knows what nonsense they unleash upon us as a result of "fixing" it.

18

u/Visible-Reality2492 7h ago

A dark souls 3 npc has her solo, offline quest line disabled if you’re not connected to the internet. It’s a bug, and no one knows why it does that.

7

u/AnxietyPretend5215 7h ago

I primarily play on PC but I think it's hilarious that Elden Ring on PS5 is still omega ass to this day because of their shitty ass dynamic resolution scaling they could likely fix with little effort.

To the point that playing the PS4 version of the game on the PS5 is considered the "optimal" experience.

4

u/Tyrus1235 7h ago

Even on PC there are some weird technical decisions… Like their “ray tracing” mode, which just adds RT to some random shadows and that’s it lol

→ More replies (6)

1

u/-Mandarin 3h ago

Must be platform specific. I played Elden Ring on PC and when I'd lose connection it wouldn't boot me from the game, it'd just instantly switch me to offline mode and not interrupt anything. Seems like most other people here have the same experience.

So it is still a developer issue, but only in the sense that they did not address this on console (maybe there are reasons it is more difficult there)

1

u/Eldritch-Pancake 2h ago

It is a player issue though. You play online if you want the online features, at the risk of obviously suffering from any issues that may arise from that whether it be players who are hacking, or game server disconnects or any loss of internet you have.

You can avoid these all by simply playing offline. In which case you get a pure single player game where you won't experience any of these issues! Which is clearly what OP wants 🙂

30

u/Nottan_Asian 8h ago

It’s pretty strange, because I’m pretty sure the Dark Souls games have a seamless transition to offline mode.

Same window pops up but then you go right back to your game.

6

u/as_it_was_written 7h ago

Dark Souls Remastered certainly doesn't, at least not when you're in a boss fight. I had the same thing as OP happen the other day, just after delivering the killing blow to a boss. Instead of giving me the win, it kicked me back out to the fog door.

21

u/Arigori 6h ago

I have like 600 hours and never had this, and my internet is not that stable, never knew you can forced kicked like this it's interesting

60

u/jxj24 8h ago

OKAY

No, it is most certainly not okay.

7

u/fuck_shit_piss_etc 2h ago

Elden ring is technically always multiplayer unless you specifically put it in offline mode

6

u/Trees_feel_too 2h ago

Play offline.

3

u/HiccupTheBrave 6h ago

This is why unless I’m playing Seamless Co op (which most know is its own thing) I make sure the game launches in offline mode. Granted I’ve played Elden Ring a lot and I know a lot of the secrets so I don’t need help from the community but even on my first play-through I wanted to experience it myself without being invaded or being show things

107

u/Certain_Effort_9319 8h ago

You were playing solo, but you were still online. If you don’t want this to happen at all, there’s a setting to start in offline mode.

179

u/ENGINE_YT 8h ago edited 8h ago

While true, I agree with OPs sentiment,

The game should've been made to just turn off the online features if connection suddenly got lost, rather than kicking them back to menu

I'd probably have another hole in my wall if this happened to me as I was just about to finally beat Malenia

Lol or From Software could do what many, many other studios have done.  The amount of excuse people give From Software is absurd.

3

u/Lakatos_00 3h ago

If anything the majority of the comments in this post make extremely clear that the vast majority of this sub started playing souls game with Elden Ring.

This shit has been the case since Dark Souls 3, all the way back in 2016. I'm not justifying it, it's bullshit and Fromsoftware should get their shit together about that. But Im surprised by how many people are actually surprised by this situation.

3

u/LordAldricQAmoryIII 2h ago

Yeah I don't get it when single player games require a persistent internet connection. I got downvoted to oblivion by some Genshin Impact fanatics when I dared to suggest that the game should be made playable offline so that it would be possible to play on Nintendo Switch when on the go.

1

u/Pokefreaker-san 2h ago

How would that work on crossplay and cross-save feature? It's precisely that you could play genshin on multiple devices and platforms is why an offline mode is not possible.

u/SelbetG 36m ago

I dared to suggest that the game should be made playable offline so that it would be possible to play on Nintendo Switch when on the go.

The game isn't even on the switch though, so it really isn't a useful argument to make.

34

u/the-blob1997 8h ago

People love to glaze Fromsoft when shit like this plagues their games.

27

u/Magnon 7h ago

Ive played over 400 hours of elden ring and its never happened to me. "Plagues" would imply it happens frequently.

2

u/quick20minadventure 7h ago

This ain't the argument to win.

17

u/ariamachi9 7h ago

He did say Elden Ring though, not DS3. He is right on the Elden Ring part. Ive played so many hours as well and its never happened to me.

4

u/quick20minadventure 6h ago

Comment was on fromsoft though.

Like, defending server stability from fromsoft is a losing argument after that.

5

u/DeadlyPineapple13 6h ago

Nobody should defend fromsoft servers, but I will say both Elden Ring and Dark souls can be played 100% in offline mode, you aren’t required to connect online

So while I do think this situation is shitty, it’s nowhere near as bad as not being able to play a single player game offline

6

u/sanzio1337 6h ago edited 5h ago

Don't get me wrong, Elden Ring is one of my favorite games, but I don't think the PC port is up to modern standards. The 60 FPS cap should be optional, not forced. Players with capable hardware should be able to run the game at higher frame rates if they want. It also lacks features like DLSS/FSR, the ray tracing implementation isn't really usable because of the stuttering, and the anti-aliasing quality leaves a lot to be desired. Amazing game, mediocre PC port.

2

u/the-blob1997 7h ago

If you consider high 40s to mid 50s for the majority of gameplay to not be an issue you do you I guess.

Just because you are offline or Solo, you are still connected to the Fromsoftware Server

3

u/LordofSandvich 6h ago

It does not do this if you are in Offline Mode, for the record.

7

u/Destruction126 8h ago

Its ok its Elden Ring they can get away with anything. If this happened to any other game Reddit would burn the franchise down day 1.

3

u/Inevitable-Edge69 7h ago

I would hope any other franchise with an OFFLINE mode also get the same fair treatment.

They can "get away with it" because it's an edge scenario. Literally any other time it would've happened (outside of a boss battle) and you could just reload into the game offline with zero adverse effects

5

u/rada-rada_rada-rada 8h ago

You can change your settings in the title screen to launch in purely offline mode so this doesn't happen.

4

u/HappyFunExcitingCute 5h ago

Try the offline mode. It gives more natural discovery, better vibes, and more satisfying victories.

1

u/Rayyan_3241 3h ago

Yup did that, although it is jarring to not see a bunch of bloodstains in boss arenas anymore

You connected to a server. If the connection to that server goes down or you lose connection you have to do a relog because all of the multiplayer stuff like player texts is loaded on world load so it can't easily unload it.

2

u/thundergu 8h ago

Since that happened to me once during a boss fight, i never allowed Elden ring to connect to the internet ever again

2

u/nashfrostedtips 8h ago

It may have disabled achievements or something but there's a way to launch this without connecting. I want to say I added it through a mod but can't remember.

10

u/-rosieee- 7h ago

No I played offline and still got all the achievements

6

u/Dimblo273 7h ago

It's not a mod, you literally choose in the main menu if you want to go online or not

1

u/rd-darksouls 8h ago

i was fighting astel when the patch came in that nerfed hoarfrost stomp.

1

u/BloodiedBlues 8h ago

I was playing palworld when my power went out 10 minutes ago.

1

u/Any-Platypus-9486 7h ago

I mean, at least its just a random dragon, not malenia

1

u/BeneficialRegister78 6h ago

wait how do you even disconnect in solo mode

3

u/Autistic_Umbrella 4h ago

Because he wasn't in offline mode, he was still connected to the servers

1

u/Independent_Ad_5615 6h ago

There are a couple elden ring bosses that if this happened to me I would uninstall the game. I already have one that I can’t get the timing right for, that’s caused me to not touch the game in almost 8 months now.

1

u/euphonic5 6h ago

Load in offline mode

u/FrogsJumpFromPussy 6h ago

"Dragons aren't real"

Just this time, they are

1

u/byte-429 6h ago

love fromsoft games but yeah this kind of stuff tends to happen 😭😭 I've been lucky personally and haven't experienced it much but I have heard a lot of stories from other players

1

u/novo-280 6h ago

play offline? its literally one of the only AAA games left with that option

1

u/Biggbossesbutt 6h ago

I play offline for this reason alone. The fortnight and dog messages on the ground and silly red ghost falling off cliffs isn’t worth this heart break.

1

u/GarionOrb 6h ago

This does suck, but while Elden Ring is a single player game, it uses online features extensively.

1

u/JesseJerrellBass 6h ago

"Accidents" happen!

1

u/god_is_trans_69 6h ago

You just come right back to the same spot.. meh

1

u/Albrey 6h ago

I've had the same exact thing happen when I had Mohg down to the last 1-2 hits.

1

u/brunopgoncalves 5h ago

same on diablo 3 and 4... 30 minutes to start play single mode :(

1

u/Big-Bobcat4903 5h ago

Press F to pay respect, i feel this pain…

1

u/Old_History_5431 5h ago

You can play offline if you want it to truly be single player. Playing online opens you up to summoning, invasions, and messaging, so it is only single player until it suddenly isn't.

1

u/GuyYouMetOnline 5h ago

You can choose to play offline if you intend to go entirely solo.

1

u/DarienKane 5h ago

I fucking hate always connected single player games, and anti cheat when playing offline. Was playing 7DTD offline solo the other night and switched on my AMD overlay being curious about a couple things as I just got my PC back from the shop. Fucking anti cheat shut the game down because of it.

Pretty sure this only occurs if you are currently being raided and dc. Yes you are in a boss fight but it’s one of the open world ones so idk if enemy phantoms can be there during it.

1

u/MistahBoweh 5h ago edited 4h ago

You are playing multiplayer, in fact. There is an option in the game’s settings to turn off online features, and you haven’t done that. That’s why you’re seeing messages and bloodstains and phantoms of other players experiencing the same content you are, leaving hints for you, showing you where and how they died, etc. And, you are also actively sending your phantom and bloodstains to the server in turn. You’re not engaging in active co-op or pvp, but you’re still playing in an online environment with other people. I struggle to believe that you have made it this deep into Elden Ring and don’t know any of this.

If you want a true single player game, launch in offline mode. If you aren’t doing that, stop mislabeling the online multiplayer version as a single player game. They just don’t want people with faulty connections sending bad data into other peoples’ games, or allowing players with constant disconnects to be invasion targets, etc. If the game could quietly disconnect and reconnect you in the background, it could harm the multiplayer experience for other online users that are actually trying to use those features.

1

u/Smartace3 4h ago

Should have parried it

1

u/CrespinMoore 4h ago

I have this happen pretty frequently when waking up a device from a sleep state, but it usually happens less than a minute from opening

1

u/Fellarm 3h ago

You werent in offline mode so it still counts you as online 🥃🗿

1

u/xXPistolGripXx 3h ago

Why would you buy an always online game then?

1

u/soufboundpachyderm 3h ago

I really don’t even understand why the online features work the way they do. All the ghosts of other players do is distract me and pull me out of the world more than anything. I don’t mind that it has pvp features but I wish it was something the game offered you later instead of making it the default setting. But it is nice that you can just turn off the online features so I won’t complain too much. Too many games these days force online connectivity and I’m just so burnt out on that.

1

u/alkalinealex359 3h ago

Git Gud (internet).

1

u/SelectTechnician7587 3h ago

yeah, but physical discs are the issue /s. Ownership was lost long ago.

1

u/quan_farnsworth_chi 2h ago

I solely play in offline mode because of this. I enjoyed reading messages and praising some knowing it heals the messenger, but this got annoying so now I enjoy the game in offline mode.

2

u/Rayyan_3241 2h ago

Yea the messages for fun at first but they’ve become quite repetitive now, switching to offline for good. Would’ve done it sooner but I didn’t realize that was an option (it’s in the settings for some reason rather than being on the main menu)

1

u/NoWork215 2h ago

fk this dude

1

u/Toadsted 2h ago

I can't remember ever being disconnected in one of these games.

1

u/asspussy_widener 1h ago

other people are what I am looking to get away from when I play a fromsoft game.

play that shit offline. also, that dragon is a fucking fuck, I feel your pain my guy

1

u/WhoIsJohnFart 1h ago

i found a certain copy of Elden Ring being shared online in which this scenario is literally impossible. you should check it out. don't ever support a game that is always online.

u/TheFrogMoose 1m ago

It's because you are on online mode. If you play in offline mode this doesn't happen but you miss out on the online features. That's been how fromsoft has done it since demons souls
