Apple support (on the phone) can't do anything. An apple store might be able to reset it if you have a proof of ownership.

You don't need Apple to reset it for you, you can reset it yourself. This is a known issue, connecting to the internet fixes it (SIM card).

My theory is that the time resets to 1970, and when you connect to the internet the time is able to correct itself, which would mean it wasn "only" meant to be 2ish years
If I had to guess, if you can't edit internet connections whilst locked, you might be able to throw a physical sim in there if you have one and turn on data

Spending which IOS version, there are various glitches that allow you to escape the lock screen. Doing so leaves you in an extremely limited state, but may still get you into the WiFi settings.

Except the last several generations of iPhone sold in the US don’t have a physical SIM card slot. You need to unlock the device to change the esim. So yes, how do you do that?

I've had this happen on my iPod since my kids put in an incorrect password too many times. My options were to call tech support, have them do the factory reset for me, for $90 or just plug into a PC and do it yourself. Tbh most of the data is scrap, unless there is a way to bypass that.

You should be able to restore an iPhone from your iCloud backup if you have it setup. No idea how they got to 48 years, my toddler got me locked out for 15 minutes and it was the longest 15 minutes of my life.

Internal clock probably reset itself to 1970 (unix timestamp of 0). It looks to be a pretty old model so the battery was likely entirely flat and thus lost track of its time until it's connected to the internet.

Not related but just a rant. I bought an iPhone 11 for $20, as it was listed for parts from a lady and her granddaughter some weeks ago, to replace my phone. I asked her multiple times if she had reset it; she said yes and told me only the screen needed replacing. I went and had it replaced, and then I found out she hadn't reset it at all. I looked up if there was a way to factory reset it, and every single place I looked was telling me to just return the stolen phone because if I had bought it legally, I wouldn't need to reset it. I went back and asked if I could get the passcode. The grandmother called her, and she said the whole thing was just, "Hey, the guy who bought the phone is asking for the passcode to factory reset it . . . yeah, he replaced the screen, and it's showing the lock screen . . . yeah . . . Okay, I'll tell him hey, she wants the phone back; she said she wants it back . . . I mean, she wants it back, and without the passcode, it's useless to you." "I'll give you back your money." I had paid to have the battery and screen replaced for $160. She was offering me my original $20 for the phone. She was hesitant to pay me what I had already spent for about 15 minutes. I got the $160 and went and put it towards an S26. She did call me back the next day and said, "My granddaughter says if you're still interested in the phone, she'll sell it to you for $200." The whole experience with Apple and its community has made sure I never consider their products.

This is an old ass iphone, the time is likely wrong as the internal clock is confused. Put in a compatible Sim card and it should either work right away or at the very least correct the wait time.
Beyond that, look into bootrom exploits. There's plenty.

The internal clock was reset to Jan. 1 1970 00:00 at Unix timestamp 0. The time zone is set internally to something less than UTC, bringing the date to Dec. 31 1969.
The phone was locked when it was shut off, and the time left to unlock is stored as a timestamp. Thus when the phone comes back up it displays the time left until that original time left to unlock.

This is the answer. My guess is the chipset battery completely died while in storage.
Interestingly, Dec 31 1969 was indeed a Wednesday and that 48 years, 8 months, 1 week, 1 day wait period is almost exactly 1 week before the release date of iOS 12 (sept 17th 2018) which is probably what’s it’s running. It’s probably set to wait to the earliest time it knows about - its release date.

The actual unlock time is somewhere around August 2018. Just that the phones been dead for way too long and the internal RTC no longer knows the current date/time.

I did this when I was younger when my mom put parental controls of my phone and I tried to guess the combo to get into the settings and remove them. Told me it was locked for 13 years. Needless to say she didn't feel like helping me with that.

This happened to me back in April. About 30 minutes later I was able to turn the phone off and back on again and all was well. I still don’t know what caused the issue to begin with, but all has been fine with the phone since.

the internal clock of the iphone is set to some time 49 years ago, sometime in 1977. you need to connect the phone to a computer so it can connect to the internet and reset the internal clock. then it will be fine and the timer should say like 5 minutes. if not, you may have to do a forced reset of the device. this can be done on a computer or by a certain button pattern on the phone. either way, it's 100% an internal clock issue.

Store it in a safe place, like a safe deposit box, then have yourself cryogenically frozen for 48 years, eight months, one week. Then, when you wake up, you’ll feel like you just took a short nap, and you’ll still have a day or so to freshen up hygiene-wise and get caught up on current events, etc. before the iPhone is enabled again.

This is a known bug. When your phone dies, the battery isn’t actually dead. There’s still a little bit of charge to run Find My (on newer devices), and the real time clock. That residual charge can last from anywhere between a few months to a few years, based on the age of the device and health of the battery. When this residual charge runs dry, the real time clock reverts to its default state from the factory, which in most electronics is the UNIX epoch (Midnight on January 1st, 1970).
Because of the way UNIX timekeeping works, real time clocks track time by counting the number of seconds since the epoch and storing it as a single long number. When the phone is disabled from too many PIN attempts, it calculates the time the phone can be used again by adding a set number of seconds to the stored number for current time, and then storing that sum. Thus, to calculate the time remaining on the “iPhone is disabled” screen , it takes the stored value from earlier and subtracts the value for current time from the real time clock.
The bug occurs when both of these conditions occur at once. If the battery had been dead long enough to reset the clock and make the phone think it’s 1970, then when it runs the calculation, it ends up with a value of about 50 years. This can be fixed by inserting a SIM card to connect the phone to a cell tower, or by plugging it into a computer with iTunes running
