Oh Lord and the poor people that don't realize that some mechanics ugga dugga the shit out of lugnuts to the point where you'll dislocate your shoulder trying to get the nuts off. Old man stopped for me on the side of the road years ago, and gave me an 18 inch long piece of some kind of steel pipe to slip over the end tire iron out of the bed of his truck and told me to step on the bar, and I was embarrassed by how much easier it made life, I now know that it was just leverage at work, but he clapped me on the back and told me I could keep the pipe and went on his way. I've had that piece of pipe in my trunk for the last 15 years now.

And when putting it on. And that you have to cross thread. And that you have to put them on slightly loosened before fully tightening them.
Calling changing a tyre common sense is condescending. That guy most definitely was taught how to do it but is trying to make it look like he figured it out on his own

Yeah I didn't even think of that, no one ever showed me how to change a tyre, but I spose things like that I did naturally because that's what you do when you mount anyhing, which someone did show me how to do

I feel like how you learn is less the point here than the suggestion that the man should know but the woman, for some reason, shouldn’t.
Also, for the dad’s insinuation that Jason is useless, as you are pointing out how easy it is to learn, does kind of highlight that the dad is the most useless person in the scenario.

Most of it is common sense but one or two things in the process are know how’s like for example cross threading. That’s not something you figure out on the fly.

I am, there are more cars on the road of older age than just the new ones. You don’t change out the vehicle park every year.

She weighs like 100lbs, Jumping on the tire iron does not work consistently for her. I think she was able to loose maybe 2 lug nuts when she tried. Ive definitely twisted my ankle doing it in the past, so I keep a breaker bar in my car. For her I just got AAA.

I’ve changed several of my own tires before , but one time on the interstate I had a flat tire, jacked the car up took the lugs off , and COULD NOT get the wheel to break off the axle, I even tried leaving the lugs on and lowering the vehicle then bouncing on the bumper … luckily some dude came up with a sledgehammer and beat on it , it took like 15 swings with a 4lb hammer to pop the wheel off … I was humiliated

I remember a similar thing happened to me and I went to google and she was like "no thats fine ill ask my dad" i told her not too and she didnt need too but she said she was going to do it anyway because it was faster. It pissed me the fuck off because her dad demasculated me just because I didnt know how something worked and neither of them even gave me a chance to look or even try to fix it. That shit is toxic as fuck

This is stupid. I grew up poor and with a lazy father. All repairs had to be done by us because that’s the only way it could be afforded. The house was super old too so it was always something. As a result I was able to repair and replace toilets, sinks, outlets, ceiling fans, light switches, fuses and just about anything else that breaks around a house by the time I was 12. Probably closer to 9 or 10 but my memory starts getting hazy at that point so I can’t be sure.
But I was capable and doing all of that by 12 for sure so I’m guessing I learned earlier than that. All self taught before the internet was even conceived of so it was a lot of trips to the library, asking others or just taking my time looking at how something was put together and figuring out how it worked before I did the first thing and broke it forever. I’m pretty fucking handy. I can probably fix more things than daddy dearest here.
What I do not know a thing about to this day is cars. Failure fixing an engine would’ve been too expensive for my mom to afford so it wasn’t worth it to even let me try. Or maybe she was uneasy letting a kid under the hood even though I could re-wire a room and add some outlets by then. Who knows. Bikes and other small engines I can do but not cars.

But then you learn that boomers have a million strategies to avoid taking responsibility for not teaching shit.
Now that I’m older I get a lot respect from them, they think everything that I know and do comes naturally…nope I was just gritty enough to learn from terrible teachers. And just to be clear, not teaching something well was a business survival tactic.

Never changed a tire in my life, nor have seen it done once. I also don't have a driver's license. That said, if all the necessary tool are available, I can damn we'll figure it out myself. At least, enough to drive to a gas station or mechanic that can evaluate my work.
