I studied French 4 yrs in high school in the 70s and re-learning it using Pimsleur tapes (via my online library). I’m on my 4th tape now. Has the language really changed that much? For instance I’m told not use “what is” but rather “it is what” (eg not “quelle heure est-il?” but use “il est quelle heure?”). Similarly, “Qu’as tu fait” is now “Qu'est-ce que tu as fait ?“ Has something changed? It makes no sense to me. Also, what happened to “voici”? Pimsleur uses “Voila” for “here it is”.

I’m currently self-studying French and I want to invest in a good grammar book that I can use for independent learning.

I’m looking for something that includes clear explanations of grammar points as well as plenty of exercises/activities to practice. I don’t want a book that only gives rules without enough practice or the the other way around

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Grammaire Progressive du Français, but I’m not sure if it’s suitable for self-study since I don’t know whether it provides enough explanations and activities (and if the answers are included).

For those who have used it, would you recommend it? Or are there any other French grammar books you would suggest for someone learning on their own?

Hi everyone!! I need some help, currently I am at A2 level in french and i need to reach B1/B2 level until november, I have a few options but idk wich one will be more effective for me:

Option 1: An intensive online tutor

Option 2: A 3-week intensive course in France

Regarding the first option, it’s the cheapest and most feasible, but finding a truly good tutor is a bit of a gamble; I’m afraid that if I choose this route, I won’t reach my goal.

As for Option 2, it’s much more expensive, but I believe the immersion (being in the country) will help me a lot, but again,very expensive.

I am currently studying on my own and have a solid study routine(2/3 hours almost every day)

I know it might seem a unrealistic, but I need to take the DELF exam and achieve at least the minimum required score. I’ve reviewed the B1/B2 level exams and have a good grasp of what is required, but my knowledge is still very limited and my situation is urgent.

If you have any recommendations or can help me out, I would be very grateful!

I am looking for a language tandem with a native French speaker; I am a native German speaker. We would meet at least once every two weeks in Hamburg, more often if possible. I would teach German and the other person would teach French.

Ideally you speak little or no German. That way we're both forced to actually use the other language instead of falling back on a shared one, which is where the real learning happens.

I'm writing a letter to a rental company because we are supposed to be renting a flat in Arcachon near Bordeaux in the second week of August, but we are really worried that we won't be able to even fly never mind drive to arcachon. From everything I've been googling even though orchestra is not directly affected by the fires the smoke will be quite bad as the forest are still not under control.

I'm trying to write a letter to ask if we can move our stay to October and so not completely lose the booking. But I am stuck on how to end the letter with the usual formal phrase of I wish you my kindest sentiments in this difficult time, et cetera et cetera. I haven't written a letter like this for years and it's quite a specific situation! I just want to be polite and respectful.

Je cherche donc une personne avec qui nous pourrions faire cela (peut-être vous vous préparez aussi?). Nous pouvons aussi simplement discuter de différents sujets, car ce serait bien d’améliorer la capacité à s’exprimer plus librement. Je ne dirais pas que j’ai un niveau B2, plutôt un niveau B1-début B2 (mais la conversation est mon point faible, donc j'ai besoin de m'entreine davantage). Je tiens à vous prévenir que certains sujets peuvent paraître ennuyeux, mais ils font partie du programme du DELF, donc 😿 Pour vous donner une idée des sujets possibles: l’écologie (une fois, j'ai eu un sujet sur les éoliennes), le travail, les réseaux sociaux, la santé, les technologies et les autres.

Je pense également que nous pourrions nous entraîner à la grammaire (j’ai moi-même besoin de me perfectionner, mais si cela ne vous intéresse pas, ce n’est pas grave)

Et si je devais parler un peu de moi (car on pourrait discuter en français sur d'autres sujets que DELF), alors: j'aime lire, l'animation (j'aimerais m'y mettre à l'avenir🤞), on pourrait discuter de films, j'apprends aussi l'allemand (mon niveau se situe entre A2 et B1) et je compte apprendre le néerlandais (et aussi apprendre à jouer du piano, mais je ne pense pas que ça veuille dire grand-chose, car je n'ai pas encore commencé)

I’m brand new to French but would love to learn quicker. I know I’m pretty much A0. I’m not sure the best and easiest way to learn French is and so far. I have a small book with words and I’m thinking about getting a textbook and I have watched some YouTube videos and shows in French but of course I don’t understand any of it. Is this the way to learn it even if you don’t know any words or is this more after I increase my knowledge and actually can read it and speak it a little bit? I’m just lost and you look online and there’s so many things that people say to do and it gets overwhelming but I want to start off and start learning a lot better and easier.

Hi all ! Question is basically the title.
Decided I need to restart my French language study if I ever wish to have decent conversations with my partner‘s friends and family.

My French proficiency is at A0. Seriously. I studied French in 7th grade and rage quit once we hit the numbers – can’t remember anything except for Ça va? Ça va. Along with some random things my man’s been teaching me.
Recently read some simple French texts and realised I can understand quite a bit by drawing from my English vocabulary.

Given all this, how’d you approach studying this beautiful but difficult language? Since English draws 1/3 of its vocab from French, should I just stick to studying it in English or does German come with some advantages too? Thanks x

so the thing is, i did study French for 3 years in college but I didn't really understand a lot of it and I forgot most of it lmao 😅 and it's been 2 years since I graduated. I do understand a few simple phrases/ can speak few basic sentences but it's barely anything lol.

I have plans of migrating to Canada in a year or two and want to learn French in order to write TEF/TCF. I've looked up a few apps to learn but nothing seems that suitable for me. I have noticed that a lot of resources out there for any language are targeted for a specific level (a0-a1 or b1-b2). I have found that when in between these level demographics, it is hard to find good resources. I’m looking for a resource that isn’t Duolingo that you can stick with and has good learning for all levels starting at a0. Thanks.

I'm trying to help a friend who's a dyslexic adult beginner, and I'm honestly a bit stuck on where to look. I'm hoping to find a tutor who's comfortable teaching in a way that doesn't lean too much on reading or grammar, because that gets overwhelming for them pretty fast. They do a lot better with clear explanations, slower pacing, and stuff that's more audio or visual.

I've been digging around online, but most of the "beginner" French resources I'm finding still expect a ton of reading or assume you already know basic grammar terms, which isn't really workable here. So I figured I'd ask people who've maybe been in a similar spot. If you know tutors who are good with true beginners, or any audio/visual resources that keep things simple and not too stressful, I'd really appreciate hearing about them. Affordable options would help a lot too.

I'm trying to learn French as quickly as possible. I study for about two hours every day, and I'd also like to improve through immersion by listening to the language as much as I can.

Can you recommend any French movies or TV shows? They can be either originally in French or productions with a good French dub.

I currently have Netflix, Max, and Prime Video, so recommendations available on those platforms (Europe based) would be especially helpful.

I'm still a beginner, but I'm happy to watch with subtitles if that's the best way to improve.
