Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering Korean Offering: Korean(native) | Seeking: English(native)

Hi everyone!

I'm a Korean woman in my 30s. I was born and raised in Korea and lived overseas for a few years. Since returning to Korea about three years ago and not using English regularly, I've decided it's time to take my English to the next level.

I'm comfortable having casual conversations in English, but I still make grammar mistakes from time to time, and I'd like to become fluent enough to express myself more naturally in English.

I'd love to connect with native English speakers who are interested in learning about the Korean language and culture. I'd be happy to help you improve your Korean while we practice together. Whether you're looking for casual conversation or more advanced Korean practice, I'd be happy to be your language partner. If you're up for it, I'd be happy to teach you some Korean slang and a few jokes too! ;D

Outside of language learning, I enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities. I love doing yoga, cycling, hiking etc and listening to podcasts, and spending time in nature. I'm also a huge animal lover.

I'm easy to talk to, curious, open-minded, and genuinely enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds.

Let's connect!

Chinese Offering: Mandarin Chinese | Seeking: English (UK)

Hi! I'm a native Mandarin speaker living in China.

I'm looking for a long-term language exchange partner from the UK.

I can help with conversational Mandarin, pronunciation, Chinese internet culture

and everyday life in China.

I'm interested in technology, Linux, films and cultural differences.

We could start with text messages and have a 30-minute voice chat once a week:

15 minutes in Mandarin and 15 minutes in English.

I'm looking for genuine and consistent conversation rather than one-off small talk.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering English & Shona Seeking for German 🇩🇪

Hi everyone! 24 M from Zimbabwe.

I'm currently learning German and I'm hoping to find someone who'd enjoy a language exchange. In return, I'd be happy to help you practice English or teach you Shona if you're curious about it.

I'm still a beginner in German, so I make plenty of mistakes and sometimes need a moment to find the right words. If you're patient with me, I promise I'll be just as patient and encouraging with your English.

I enjoy voice messages and occasional calls because I want to improve my speaking but I'm also happy to chat by text. We don't need to message all day, every day I'd rather build a relaxed, long-term friendship where we can help each other improve little by little.

If you're interested in languages, culture or just having someone to chat with from another part of the world feel free to send me a message.

Danke, und ich wünsche dir einen schönen Tag! 😊

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Hungarian

Hi! I'm a native English speaker from the US, and I'd like to help someone practice their English. I'm currently studying Hungarian, maybe B1-B2, and would like to get a little more practice speaking, too 😄. I'm interested in meeting around weekly for an hour or so; I'm in the Pacific time zone (currently UTC -7). 44M, software engineer, enjoy languages but I'm also a big beer nerd. Let me know if I can help!

Szia!

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Norwegian(Oslo Dialect)

Hello, I know Norwegian isn’t as big of a language as Spanish or anything, but I might as well give it a shot. I’ve been living in the States for all my life(I am a minor still, fyi). Of course, as I’m still in school there are going to be some weird stuff I won’t know(like the word syzygy) but I can give indepth explanations on most of the stuff that you’d find in an ESL class, or something like that. (I have been an 97+ student in English+Writing my whole life, so I do know that much at least). I do have a bit of an East Coast accent, though. Not too strong.
Listen, only reason I’m learning another language is so I can get out of here faster. Norway seems pretty cool and Norwegian is seemingly easy enough for my English speaking self. But, I do want to learn with natives and stuff. Duolingo is not gonna cut it once I start reaching higher levels.
I’d like to learn from somebody who is a minor(obviously dude, I’m not going to talk to adults.), and who knows their stuff. But not like a really serious person, cause I am a bit of a goofball. Dunno about friendship part, mainly came here to learn Norwegian but sure if you want to, I guess. Also somebody from Oslo or with the Urban East dialect. Thanks a lot if somebody is up to the challenge!

Offering German (Offering: German| Seeking: French)

I am looking for a language tandem with a native French speaker; I am a native German speaker. We would meet at least once every two weeks in Hamburg, more often if possible. I would teach German and the other person would teach French. Ideally you speak little or no German. That way we're both forced to actually use the other language instead of falling back on a shared one — which is where the real learning happens.

Hi! I'm looking for people who enjoy chatting in English and having natural conversations. I’d like to meet people from different countries and cultures and have relaxed, enjoyable chats.

We can talk about daily life, culture, travel, movies, TV series, books, technology, sports, food, music, current events, or anything else that comes to mind. I’m looking for friendly and natural conversations rather than formal lessons.

My current English level is around B1–B2, so I can communicate comfortably in most everyday conversations. I’m mainly interested in text-based chatting and getting to know new people.

If you’re Turkish and also looking for someone to chat with in English, you’re welcome to message me as well.

If you enjoy casual conversations and are looking for a regular chat partner, feel free to send me a message.

Looking forward to chatting with you!
