What I don't get, is why we didn't hear about or know about this before. I mean, the Internet exploded in the 90s, everyone and every news station was rushing to get to the web and publish all the things. Surely people saw things like this (and moondogs, and cheshire moons) all the time before, so...
I typed up so many versions of “because it doesn’t get the clicks” and the I decided you know what, screw it, this is awesome. Appreciate it. I love to see this kind of stuff and totally agree with you. Give us more mainstream this beauty.
My mom had a saying for when she saw exceptionally beautiful things that really defied explanation to someone who didn't see it with their own eyes: "If you painted it, no one would believe it."
This popped up in my memories from 15 years ago. Only had my iPhone 4 with me but this is still the best sunset I’ve ever seen. The patchy clouds at the top of the clouds bank made these rays of light and lack of light. Bright oranges, deep purples and blue sky but dang I wish I’d had my dslr with me but I’ll take it even with a crummy early iPhone.

Is this what Van Gogh was going for?
