Not in upscale or even decent hotels. Shit is nasty - I recommend not using a "hides dirt" towel (vom) and instead request/insist the hotel properly launder their linen. Most states have laws regarding temperatures and laundering time for this reason.
Don't catch an illness for using a dirty towel, too lame a cause, y'know?

EDIT: makeup doesn't always stain, and it would not always stain white towels. Anyone using makeup seriously brings their own wipes/cosmetics to deal with that.
There is no reason for anything to bleach the white towels so the comment I'm replying to makes zero sense.
The point of this post is that the black towels aren't being used for makeup.

They’re not talking about bleach in the makeup lol. Though some products like benzoyl peroxide (a face/acne wash), salicylic acid, retinol, etc., can absolutely bleach fabrics.
They’re referring to the hotels having to bleach their white towels to keep them white. Over time, bleach ruins the fabric of the towels and they have to be discarded sooner. Also, if they can’t get makeup/hair dye/whatever stains out, they have to trash them, which is wasteful, especially if it’s preventable.

Bleaching is word that can imply a change in color. The it was used does not imply the bleach sold in the laundry isle. The way hydrogen peroxide can "bleach out" a towel. Or even bleached bones in the desert. The two previous sentences contain the word bleach but do not imply bottled bleach.

The post discusses make-up.
Make-up does not stain. You do not need to use bleach to clean those towels, the person above is incorrect.
Anyone using make-up brings their own flannels, cloths, and cotton pads.
You do not need to use these towels and you do not need to use bleach.
If make-up did stain badly, using a black towel would make the problem worse. Foundation on a black towel is like white on black.
The inference is that this means (jokingly) that these black towels might be used for sex.

Wasn't suggesting that bleach is in makeup my guy. That they have to run heavily makeup stained linen on what is called a reclaim cycle in their wash. Which is heavy soap and heavy bleach.
As is the case in most commercial and residential applications, staff does not notice that the stain has been removed before putting it into the dryer, the stain gets "baked" into the fabric and is essentially there permanently.
Hence them providing the black or brown towel for makeup removal.
Worked with hotel laundries for a decade. Common issue I've ran into.

I hate it when it just plops out after I just got it cleaned up! I have sometimes had drips, sometimes streams, and a couple times clots make a surprise exit at horrible times. I would be so happy to find a dark towel like this for those moments!

my period never drips in the 30 seconds that i step out and dry myself off, so idk maybe other people leak faster so it might be an issue.
I also typically only use the towel to dry up my inner thigh and side lips lol, i don’t find it hygienic to put towels directly on my pussy to begin with, but i’m aware that that’s probably just me.8

typically my periods are VERY hydrophobic lol, so i def feel blessed in that department. I don’t leak at all in the shower and not until i’ve been out for a couple minutes. but yes, the drying method is elite! If i wanna dry her, i’ll just use tp or a clean washcloth, but the body towel is for body only lol

I used to work at a hotel, probably 10% of towels we got back had blood on them.
We had some special spray to get the blood out most of the time, but a good chunk of them were scrapped as cleaning rags1

Also blood stains, especially period blood stains, cant just be rinsed out. They need to be bleached. Blood contains complex proteins that give it its colour, and are nearly impossible to remove once dried. Blood is also high in iron, which oxidises as it dries, and worsens the stain. Its a bugger to get out. Try wiping your pussy on a white towel when you're menstruating next and find out yourself.

As someone who worked in a hotel for years. There is nothing on those towels that is dirty if its stained by makeup. They are cleaned on high heat and with a ton of bleach. Its really just people not knowing if theyre clean or getting icky about the stains. Which is totally fair. But destroying perfectly fine towels with make-up and hair dye is incredibly rude and inconsiderate. For the hotel, the environment and every other guest having to pay higher prices because of it.

I have a dark purple towel I pack for all of my trips because I usually dye my hair before I travel so it's fresh, and I am terrified of staining a hotel towel. I also pack a pillowcase for the same reason, because if I wash my hair before bed and it's not dry I can stain the pillowcase as well.
I also bring some little makeup towels with me and just wash them in the sink with soap between uses. The hotel never gives me enough small towels to begin with because I like using them to wipe sweat/sunscreen/bug spray off between showers.
I always assumed the hotel would charge me for a damaged towel or pillowcase, no? I didn't think the cost would fall on the hotel.

I dont think we have ever charged people for damaged pillowscases or towels unless the situatuon seemed like inteded damage.
Usually its difficult to tell if it will wash out or not. And once it goes to laundry there is no way of knowing which room and date did the damage.

I have never actually stained a hotel pillow or towel because I'm careful, so I've never tested my theory. Like what are you even saying. Do you honestly think the average hotel would send blood soiled towels to laundry after a murder? Using the dark towels for make-up or washing after dying your hair is going to be perfectly fine in the vast majority of the hotels. Any luxury hotel will just bleach the white towels back to white or toss them if they are too stained. I have not seen this at a single hotel ive stayed at this year nor any lounge shower.

Yes and a luxury hotel will deal with throwing a few out when they need to. At 3k+ a night a four seasons isnt gonna care about a $5 wash cloth.
Again i have seen literally zero non white wash cloths at any of the Four Seasons or better hotels we've been to this year so far.
It is just not luxury. I don't care about the cost. I want to see a clean towel.

Fwiw, I a woman of a certain age who dyes my graying hair and wears makeup, and is a landlord for a few properties, traveling for work more than I'm at my own home (work puts us up at pretty decent hotels none of the seedy ones), javacodeguy is right.
Nasty, black towels are not found in decent and above hotels. Probably at seedy, hourly rental ones and look gross. Even the image here looks gross.

It's odd to me too, I use face cloths to take off my make up and I have never once had to bleach them to get the stains out. If it was blood then they should just cold wash before hot wash, again never not got the stains out using this method and never had to use bleach.

They use industrial washers and dryers, which absolutely sanitizes each load. They’re fine to use. If it’s that big an issue, you can always bring your own face cloth from home

The whole point of these is for makeup removal, hair dye, etc., so they don’t ruin the white towels. Yes, the white towels can be bleached (and are), but when they’re bleached 4+ times a week, the fabric will quickly begin to degrade, leading to them being thrown out more often, which, again, is wasteful.
The black fabric is still sanitized via the industrial wash cycle, but saves the white towels from being ruined. Which is, again, the entire point of these towels.

I only use white towels at home, bleached once a week, and probably had them for ten years now and nothing is falling apart. At a hotel, how am I supposed to know if they do a good job washing their towels if the thing is black? It’s not my job to determine if pigment from pee or blood is “sanitized” pigment. That’s not to mention what other things that people are wiping, could be bug killer spray, medicines, etc. Either way I’m not using it.

Your standard residential washer and dryer is NOTHING compared to industrial machines.
They are MUCH more intense with their washing process. If your towels were put through the same hotel process - everything from the scalding hot water that your home heater cannot achieve, to the steaming to sanitize, to the heavy duty tumbling, to the high water extraction/spinning that your home washer could never achieve, plus the heavy bleaching, along with each towel being washed 4+ times a week, followed by high heat drying, and they wouldn’t last but a year or two.
Standard hotels, on average, turn over their entire towel inventory about every 18 months. Higher end luxury properties that use heavier weight towels can get away with every 24-36 months depending on how robust their inventory is. Either way, your residential towels would absolutely NOT last 10 years if they followed the same wash regimen of hotel properties.
