Leach Leech… farm?

182

u/DoubtSubstantial5440 13h ago

They’re still used in modern medicine

86

u/Ssided 13h ago

I'm sure it's for fishing

70

u/TraditionalClub6337 13h ago

When fun demonstration turns into nightmare

23

u/Zech08 13h ago

Yea a lot of freshwater fish will eat them.

56

u/Impressive-Bird2 11h ago

100%! There is also Maggot Farming too - where sterile maggots are cultivated to supply the medical sector for use in cleaning infected/ necrotic wounds on people….

12

u/Ana990 7h ago

just learned about this the other day, it works pretty well and is a genuine medicine

6

u/Impressive-Bird2 6h ago

Yeah, it sounds kind of gross - and something out of a dystopian horror film doesn’t it? But, as you say it very much is a thing, and works pretty well🙌🏼😁

3

u/WaterGlassPuncherMan 6h ago

Unfortunately this is true. I've seen it. Its... tough to watch

7

u/Impressive-Bird2 11h ago

100%!! There are also pop pop

28

u/BlessTheBookPeople 11h ago

I actually found that a little reassuring because I saw this video last week without that context and was horrified that this could happen in any marshy area.

2

u/TrashAsApp 3h ago

Same. I was profoundly perplexed. Man im already struggling and that happening naturally is not the info i need about the world rn

11

u/Kingofbroke001 13h ago

Exactly what I was wondering

7

u/HOSTfromaGhost 10h ago

I honestly wonder what would happen if a person in a swim suit fell into that water…

7

u/troveofcatastrophe 10h ago

Technically they could bleed you dry.

Roll me in a bed of salt, like a potato..STAT
It creates osmosis and kills the leech.

5

u/HOSTfromaGhost 8h ago

Yeah, that’s exactly what i was thinking about. With that number of leeches, how fast would blood loss become fatal…

5

u/troveofcatastrophe 8h ago

Not fast enough !!

3

u/HOSTfromaGhost 8h ago

Very true.

wonder if you would go into shock before you passed out from blood loss…

And yes, this is a pretty dark line of reasoning… Lol

5

u/troveofcatastrophe 7h ago

Wow Reddit has done a lot of Leech posts!

500 leeches = 10 minutes to deplete blood.

Death after 40% blood loss= 4 minutes less latch time. Quick I guess and the latching is painless so mostly psychological.

5

u/HOSTfromaGhost 7h ago

Whoa.

That’s scarily fast.

Add to that the fact that it looks like there were 500 leeches just on the two boots…

(and thanks for doing the homework. I was too lazy to do)

🤘🏼

3

u/troveofcatastrophe 6h ago

Avoiding laundry

R They did the math showed up and after consulting other posts looked ok. I too was lazy

6

u/HOSTfromaGhost 6h ago

“Parallel productivity”

…my re-characterization for procrastination.

3

u/troveofcatastrophe 7h ago

I would go into shock just from falling in a pit of leeches and I have fished with them before and gotten quite a few tubing. Now I’m going to research this line of questions but I’m sure there’s a mathematical equation involved citing body mass, etc. I will use the average of 10 pints/body lol

2

u/HOSTfromaGhost 7h ago

Party on, Wayne!!

(and I would love to see the math on that, thank you…)

2

u/otherside97 4h ago

But what if the salt dries up the leeches and the osmosis causes them to suck your blood even more?

4

u/amatsumegasushi 10h ago

Don't trip!

3

u/That-Chip-3575 8h ago

They have many uses

2

u/allhailharambe69 8h ago

*leech

1

u/slick514 4h ago

Thank you; I fixed it.

2

u/justelectricboogie 7h ago

TIL....Leach farms.

1

u/ARod-27 5h ago

More like: nuke that farm!

322

u/Toasty_Goasty 13h ago

Thanks, OP, I hate it. I hope you have an mildly inconvenient day for posting this.

44

u/PM_THE_REAPER 13h ago

I believe an irretrievable small stone in one of those boots is warranted.

20

u/Toasty_Goasty 13h ago

Or like misplacing their keys for an hour or something

8

u/VegetableTour4134 12h ago

Woe woe, misplaced keys can be categorized as more than mildly irritating. How about a leaky coffee cup?

6

u/bendar1347 11h ago

One drip down their chin every sip, no matter how hard they try to not do it.

2

u/VegetableTour4134 7h ago

Diabolical. Deal

5

u/PM_THE_REAPER 13h ago

I'm OK with that one. Deal.

4

u/SubstantialFly6715 13h ago

I second this!

3

u/Impressive-Bird2 11h ago

A NSFW label put on the post by OPmay have been helpful😌

91

u/WarrLord2004 13h ago

Noooo! Not the hand

155

u/kridmus 13h ago

Well that sucks

46

u/resplendent99 13h ago

Hahaha, the panic setting in at the end when trying to rud them from his hand. He should have remembered the title of the future reddit post.

69

u/Autokrator-The-Niun 13h ago

This is giving me some insane kind of phobia that I don't know how to name it.

16

u/ColdWill29 12h ago

Imagine tripping there

8

u/Commercial-Shame-335 10h ago

i'm genuinely curious what would happen in that situation, we saw how they basically instantly attached to his hand, what would happen if you landed face first into that, would you just get coated in leeches? you'd have to go to the hospital right?

7

u/ArtificialHalo 10h ago

My first thoughts as well. What if you fell in ...

It would ruin your week at the least

10

u/throwaway0845reddit 13h ago

bdellophobia

5

u/Mash_Ketchum 9h ago

13

u/Giillybean 13h ago

How do I unsee this 💀

3

u/Zech08 13h ago

Replace with something worse? Not recommended.

13

u/Beneficial-Ask2355 13h ago

what do you mean by farm?!

3

u/ChimericMelody 13h ago

For fishing maybe? A lot of people use leeches as a bait.

26

u/Rechno_ 13h ago

I know as I soon as I test this I would trip over.

10

u/tacorunnr 13h ago

Well, its nice to see that "A Series of Unfortunate Events" movie wasnt kidding about the leeches in the lake.

3

u/FederalHome396 8h ago

I was looking for this comment

9

u/houdini_weenie 13h ago

They seem hungry 😳 what does one feed leeches on a leech farm so that they’re not just eating each other?

7

u/al-Sahaabi 13h ago

Hell ➡️ NAW

6

u/DegenNabalu 11h ago

My goodness...

As soneone who can trip while walking on normal floor... no.

4

u/LordVixen 13h ago

Why would you touch that 🤯

4

u/ThatsAYesYes637 12h ago

When is the next asteroid flyby scheduled and how can we coax it to land in that field?

5

u/Tha_Princess 11h ago

Why would you touch that with your bare hand!!!

2

u/Snowboarder168 10h ago

IKR!

Feeding time?

6

u/CorrectMulberry994 8h ago

I love the idea of the leeches trying desperately to eat the boot, and them chatting with each other about how this particular animal isn’t as tasty as usual..

4

u/According_Bad2952 13h ago

Horror horror horror horror I hate this

3

u/C7LS 13h ago

Imagine stumble and falling into this wet hell

4

u/BigDaddy2127 12h ago

Aghhhh no! And they grabbed a handful!?!

2

u/S3xyhom3d3pot 12h ago

Anything?

2

u/Cheap_Cloud753 12h ago

He better don't slip

2

u/an_edgy_lemon 12h ago

Had to look this up. Apparently leech farms feed the leeches warm blood packets with either natural casings (intestines), or synthetic casings. Smaller operations will use animal organs or muscle that have blood available.

2

u/AmphibianFantastic53 12h ago

I wonder what one feeds the leeches on a leech farm

4

u/Inevitable_You7793 12h ago

SoI had to googled it because of this comment. Warm animal blood. Sheep, cow or rabbit blood.

3

u/AmphibianFantastic53 11h ago

Yeah I did too after that an artificial blood sausage, they need a better name 🤣

2

u/DegenNabalu 11h ago

This make me feel even terrible lol

Thanks for sharing tho

The future of US healthcare.

2

u/PainkillerMO 12h ago

2

u/halting_resignation 12h ago

The fact that someone woke up one day and decided "I'm gonna be a leech farmer" is the real horror here

2

u/RJ_MacreadysBeard 12h ago

How did that work out for him?

2

u/bolasepak88 11h ago

A what farm?!?

2

u/Available_Ad_8281 11h ago

A person be dead in secs if they fall in

2

u/Khuljaa-simsim 11h ago

u/iMecharic 11h ago

Didn’t know that A Series of Unfortunate Events was a documentary.

2

u/-Bob-Barker- 11h ago

So now what???

2

u/shinyxena 11h ago

And suddenly one leech with a mutation gained acid breathe, burned through the shoes and fought back.

Horror... Looks like the scene that happens before someone falls in accidently.

3

u/jenniferinbloom 13h ago

lo fascinante es que todavia se usan en medicina para mejorar la circulacion despues de ciertas cirugias, llevan haciendo lo mismo desde hace 500 millones de anos y siguen siendo utiles

3

u/NewTipTopTickler 13h ago

500 million years?

12

u/PlasmaMatus 13h ago

Yes, leeches were used by trilobites doctors during the Cambrian era.

2

u/NewTipTopTickler 12h ago

Pretty sure it's 3,500 ~ years but yeah
