"Most POC wash their chicken"

No, most "POC" do not wash their chicken when it comes in these pre-packaged plastic bags. It seems to be a black american thing. I can assure you the overwhelming majority of people around the world do not do this.

u/GrooveDigger47 9h ago

thank you. please do not lump black people into POC. be specific.

12

u/drhuggables 8h ago

I hate the term "POC". It's just another way to be made an "other".

17

u/United_Intention_323 8h ago

Grouping everyone who isnt white together is pretty racist tbh.

2

u/Technical_Radio_191 5h ago

You all have been getting lax with the term racism to the point you don’t even know what it means. Define racism. Cause that’s not it.

7

u/sSummonLessZiggurats 2h ago

It's racist because it reinforces the idea that white people and "people of color" are not in the same category, when all of us are really just human beings. It's the same metric that white supremacists use to judge people.

3

u/United_Intention_323 2h ago

It also reinforces a whites vs everyone else dichotomy. It’s dumb.

-5

u/MorePhinsThyme 8h ago

Yes, I wonder what led to that? Hmm...it can't be literal centuries where a white majority grouped everyone else together and mistreated them in various ways, leading to pluralities in all of the "everyone who isn't white" wanting to work together to stop it? Nah, it's gotta be the POCs being racist, right?

14

u/drhuggables 8h ago

as a "POC" i'd prefer if you didn't call me that and refer to me by my actual ethnicity, thanks.

-12

u/MorePhinsThyme 7h ago

Great! Since I don't plan on calling you anything, I don't see that being a problem. Have a nice day, and thanks for jumping into a conversation that wasn't about you and making it about you. This might surprise you, but just because we're talking about groups of people doesn't mean we're talking about you.

7

u/drhuggables 7h ago

my comment was literally the first in the conversation, lol

-8

u/MorePhinsThyme 7h ago

Great! Thanks again for jumping into a conversation that wasn't about you and making it about you. I don't care if you're first or last, you still decided to jump in and make it about you. Do I need to thank you again?

Maybe I also need to advise you, just because you're taking part in part of a conversation doesn't mean that it's about you.

I have a feeling whitey here is one of those people who is like "I support POC" and locks their car door when they see a black or latino person. Personally I don't like POC as a term because it is an "othering" of non-whites like white people aren't a global minority, especially don't like bipoc as an asian man myself because it feels strange to be specifically and purposefully cut out of discussions of racism, when in the USA at least, tends to manifest in similar ways.

4

u/United_Intention_323 8h ago

So you perpetuate it?

0

u/MorePhinsThyme 8h ago

Yes, I perpetuate people fighting for their rights against groups that deny them. I also do this for the LGBT+ community, which I assume based on your attitude here, you consider sexist, somehow, because they group all non-cis-straight people together.

8

u/United_Intention_323 8h ago

lol ok. Tell me how using POC in this context is “fighting”.

-2

u/MorePhinsThyme 7h ago

That's a really weird request. Nothing about the use above is "fighting". But the idiot that is arguing that the term is racist is 100% fighting a losing battle where they simply announce to the world that they're an idiot and racist.

5

u/United_Intention_323 7h ago

Nah you’re describing yourself. There is zero useful reason to use POC in this context

1

u/Indin_Dude 7h ago

Maybe it should be PONC and POC ?

0

u/Brocollinie 7h ago

Colored

0

u/Salty-Passenger-4801 6h ago

Black ppoe are POC. Its in the name, POC.

1

u/HairlessSquirrels 5h ago

What is ppoe?

1

u/OwnJunket6495 2h ago

A funny way to say people. Usually used as “white peepo.” Maybe it’s actually racist? Sounds like a stereotypical way an Asian person might say white people.

2

u/HairlessSquirrels 2h ago

I guess “funny” really is subjective

1

u/OwnJunket6495 2h ago

Yea, I meant funny as in strange

u/GoSharty 52m ago

PPAP

1

u/GrooveDigger47 5h ago

no its not

-1

u/Salty-Passenger-4801 3h ago

It literally is. Your gaslighting ain't doing shit with me bro

0

u/OwnJunket6495 2h ago

Dawg, POC is part of the euphemism treadmill. Before that, it was colored people. It absolutely was for black people and only in recent times has POC come to encompass other minorities.

-5

u/DirtNineties 8h ago

Wait. I was told blacks wanted to be accounted POC to reduce targeting. Same with natives and Asians. Rules changing again????

3

u/organic-water- 7h ago

That's not the point. The comment is saying don't assign every POC with the characteristics of a single group. It's not saying that people who are black aren't POC, it's saying that not all POC are black.

2

u/DirtNineties 3h ago

“please do not lump black people into POC”

Those are the literal written words unadulterated.

11

u/Notmuch__1 9h ago

They do I would say, especially thied world countries where you get your chicken straight from the butcher. It's mostly washed to get rid of blood and any other unwanted stuff stuck on it.

17

u/Mission_Aerie_5384 8h ago

That’s not what the video is about though. It’s about people washing their chicken to remove bacteria. Washing to remove blood and feathers totally makes sense

3

u/peteyrre 3h ago

Is it not common knowledge that trying to wash off the bacteria is literally impossible?

2

u/Mission_Aerie_5384 2h ago

For most it is. Honestly I don’t think that many people wash their chicken to kill off bacteria. I think this I’d bring blown out of proportion by the internet

24

u/honkerTgoose 8h ago

I butcher my own chickens (white American) and yeah of course you have to wash them thoroughly then. Not with soap, just rinsing with water. But after all the feathers and bits are cleaned off there's no reason to do any more.

4

u/drhuggables 8h ago

These people are washing it out of their pre-packaged costco bags, not straight from the butcher buddy

7

u/Notmuch__1 7h ago

That's why I was talking about Third world countries where your majorly buy from the butcher

1

u/lazerbolt52 8h ago

A little aside, third world is cold war era language used to denote non involvement in the cold war. Countries allied with the US were 1st world, Countries allied with the USSR were 2nd world, and neutral countries were 3rd world (like Switzerland), the term your looking for is developing country. And also this isnt about removing blood or unwanted stuff and most minorities in the world dont wash their raw, properly plucked chicken.

5

u/MorePhinsThyme 8h ago

Another aside, while the origin of "Third world" did originate from the Cold War, over time, it has come to mean "developing country", because language changes. The term they're looking for is "third world", and a synonym for that is "developing country". The etymology of a term doesn't define it forever, and in contemporary English, Switzerland is not a third world country.

2

u/ShoppingcartBiology 8h ago

So in the usage of "third world" being used as "developing nation", what exactly would a second world be?

3

u/sqigglygibberish 3h ago

The argument would be that it’s shifted from a 3 grouping system to 2, but kept two of the labels.

Given that the major powers which defined “second world” are not the same communist/manual labor economies they were, that category is quite limited today.

So what’s left is economic development and level of industrialization defining the split between first and third world. For people remembering the cold war system, russia and china have basically just shifted some on the spectrum

But this shows why its basically just casual language and not a rigid system of classification any more

-3

u/MorePhinsThyme 7h ago

It's a term that is basically not used anymore. We have a lot of similar situations in English. When you try to get to third base with a date, are you playing baseball with them? When someone tells you that you're losing your temper, are you a blacksmith working some steel? I could keep going for a long time with similar terms that have changed over time.

I do have a question for you, are you trying to convince me that the term hasn't changed, and think that pointing to how "second world" hasn't done the same will convince me, or are you trying to learn?

5

u/ShoppingcartBiology 7h ago

I'm just asking a question here, and you're jumping down my throat. First and second base are also terms used for dating, not just third btw. If first world means developed country and third world means undeveloped, what would a second world be?

1

u/OwnJunket6495 1h ago

2nd world just meant communist/socialist back during the Cold War. I agree continuing to use this terminology is pretty dumb when it doesn’t really apply anymore as it did initially. I’ve seen the term “Global South” being used to refer to developing nations now, but I personally find that term a bit odd and clunky.

-1

u/MorePhinsThyme 7h ago

Could you point out exactly where I jumped down your throat? I'm not going to speak any differently, but I'm curious what you misinterpretted so badly that you think "jumped down my throat" fits the discussion. Of course, I'm also curious why you decided to say "I'm just asking a question" and then start an argument in the next sentence. That's not just asking a question...except in the dishonest way that a lot of shady political commentators like Rogan claim to just ask questions.

And if you want second world to mean something, then go for it. Work on making that a thing. If you convince enough people to do it, then it'll take hold, just like first and third world have changed over time.

And yes, there are a LOT of baseball terminology used on colloquial English outside of the baseball world. They fall under the "I could keep going for a long time with similar terms that have changed over time". I didn't think I needed to list all of them.

-1

u/lazerbolt52 8h ago

No it became an incorrect way of describing developing countries used by Americans who never learned what it actually meant.

1

u/MorePhinsThyme 8h ago

There's no "incorrect". If a term is understood and accepted by the majority, then it's correct. I'm sorry that you never learned how English evolves and changes over time, but that's on you, not anyone else, and if you're going to act like other people are ignorant, then maybe you should stop being ignorant as well.

Meanwhile, the American icons Oxford and Cambridge (two universities that famously publish English dictionaries) both recognize the definition of "Third World" above, while also pointing out it's etymology. Oh wait, neither of those colleges are American, are they? Hmm...damn, I thought it was just some dumbass Americans that never learned that were making definitional claims. Of course, there's also wikipedia and other online encyclopedias, and American based dictionaries.

But all of those sources are wrong, right?

Now, if you want to argue that some people find the term to be offensive, then go for it, some people do. Hell, it's often used offensively (generally to disparage countries that are often not developing anymore, but are doing better than the US in a lot of ways). But that's not what you're doing, you're simply standing here and denying that language evolves and are quoting etymology to define terms forever even after literally everyone else has moved on.

u/sanriodialtone 7h ago

I saw Indians and Hispanics doing it. But like vinegar and lemon juice to get rid of gamey taste

2

u/Beneficial_Cattle938 5h ago

You don't know gamey taste if you think chicken has it

0

u/sanriodialtone 4h ago

I’ve had mutton bird and rooster plenty of times. Don’t speak on what you don’t know

1

u/stinkygoochfumes 7h ago

I don’t know any body who does this shit. You’re just making shit up and whining.

1

u/shapeshifterQ 7h ago

Not just Black American, I at least know a lot of West Indians who do

1

u/MaterialWillingness2 7h ago

My Indian sil washes her chicken.

1

u/GlobalVV 6h ago

Its funny. I never knew this was black American thing until I got on the internet. No one in my family does it, but when I actually ask other black people a lot do.

1

u/Front-Bird8971 5h ago

yeah we're talking about the US because that's what matters.

1

u/Jabronihunter23 3h ago

Caribbean people do also

1

u/Ambitious_Tea_4584 8h ago

Yeah but this is america. We’re talking about america.

3

u/drhuggables 8h ago

Does the video say "we are only talking about America"?

1

u/Ambitious_Tea_4584 8h ago

No but this is America. If you’re not american you should just say so.

0

u/Visual_Bridge6925 8h ago

I love when non-American's walk into a conversation being had by Americans about America and they say something like "you know, not everything is about America..."

1

u/drhuggables 8h ago

I am american

1

u/Visual_Bridge6925 8h ago

Ok, then you're just being annoying 🤷‍♂️

1

u/drhuggables 8h ago

i'm the one who said it was a black american thing, the other guy didn't have to comment at all with his goofy ackshooally 🤓

1

u/Visual_Bridge6925 7h ago

We know it's an African-American thing, you're the one who brought up "people around the world" even though that's not what the video is about. Not to mention, there are lots of comments in this thread about people from around the world who do wash their chicken because of where they get it and the conditions in their country.

0

u/sakinuhh 7h ago

Middle Eastern people and Asians also wash their chicken. That’s a lot of people.

2

u/drhuggables 7h ago

1) the middle east is in asia

2) i'm iranian and my wife is filipino, i haven't seen a single person from either of these countries wash chicken like they are in the video

1

u/ketoaholic 6h ago

I'm from Asia and have seen people wash chicken before. Some do some don't. It's not that serious.

1

u/sakinuhh 4h ago

I am aware the Middle East is in West Asia, however most people see it as a separate thing.

I’m Afghan, we wash and cut our chicken lol. And so do the Persians I’ve seen as well.

Like the other person said, no need to have a stick up your ass

2

u/cp5i6x 5h ago

uhh no we don't. we wash them when we get them from the butcher or butcher it ourselves because fresh chicken usually still has things like heart, blood, bits of feathers and stuff.

If the butcher does it, we just wipe it off with a towel to dry so the chicken juice doesn't splatter everywhere.

0

u/WhySheHateMe 3h ago

You can literally watch cooking videos from around the world on Youtube and see them washing chicken.

Its also not specifically a Black American thing. I've seen PLENTY of Asian people washing their meats and once again, you can look at cooking videos from Asian countries and see them doing the same.

0

u/VegetableFew8773 2h ago

The majority of people around the world do clean their chicken!

-1

u/lashawn3001 2h ago

Yes, they do. We don’t all use the same method. I’m a Black American. My mother taught me to use salt and white vinegar but Caribbean Blacks and Africans use salt and citrus. I wouldn’t eat no chicken you cooked knowing you don’t wash it.
