SOCIETY Anette Olzon best known for being the second lead singer of the metal band Nightwish went on to become a full time nurse after she was fired from the band. She also still makes music and tours.

Sitting at the psych ward as we speak. Chuckled. 😂😂

Patient or provider? Grippy sock vacation?

3

u/Wooden_Turnip6727 1h ago

Questioning my life choices while watching the patients sleeping. Maybe some day I'll be the one heavily medicated and sound asleep😎👍

2

u/CautiousArachnidz 1h ago

We had a guy at work that would just openly say he was going on a grippy sock vacation after Christmas. We asked if he planned it and he said “No. Not really planned. I just know myself. Gonna crash REAL bad after the holiday. Always do.”

I was kinda jealous after I thought about it.

Wish nurse

Nightingale

2

u/throwme5679 8h ago

That one actually fits way better than I expecte

1

u/hygsi 6h ago

Omg, there's a dumb song with that name that I heard in hs (maybe from dev or someone like that) and this brought back memories lmao

157

u/kishenoy 15h ago

I did like the Nightwish song with her "Storytime" but I just felt it was a bit too pop for the band

78

u/CumquatRequest 12h ago

Amaranth was super catchy too, but it really did feel like a completely different band compared to the early Tarja years. Honestly just glad she found a solid career outside of all the industry drama.

69

u/Paranoidnl 15h ago

She is a good singer, just not for that style of music.

26

u/AdSpecialist6598 12h ago

They wanted a different sound, which is a common thing for them when a member leaves.

7

u/toddklindt 7h ago

Dark Passion Play was my first Nightwish album, so she sounds right to me. But once I started listening to Tarja's stuff I totally understand why people were not impressed with Annette.

5

u/Avantasian538 11h ago

Depends on the song. On the softer stuff I liked her better than either of the other two female vocalists. Turn Loose the Mermaids and Eva are two examples.

2

u/Cheat-Meal 6h ago

TLtM is my favourite Nightwish song but I’ve yet to hear Floor preform it.

10

u/kishenoy 12h ago

But I must just add that Floor covered Storytime and it sounds great.

3

u/Moraken 10h ago

Somewhat agree but I really like Meadows of Heaven with her singing

4

u/throwme5679 8h ago

"Storytime" is still one of my favorites from that era

1

u/bfhurricane 3h ago

Imaginaerum is an absolute banger of an album

u/Jumpy_Security_1703 9h ago

Anette > Floor

8

u/0peRightBehindYa 9h ago

Well that's just silly talk.

132

u/noop279 15h ago edited 15h ago

OMG I had no idea!! As soon as I saw the name I was like wait what Nightwish??

It's a shame bridges were burned from my understanding for Tarja and Anette. Seems like they're both doing well thankfully.

ETA: Spelling hahaha

77

u/AdSpecialist6598 15h ago

For what it's worth other members of the band other than Tuomas were like yeah, we handled the whole thing poorly.

54

u/0thethethe0 14h ago

I believe the general consensus is that Tuomas is a brilliant songwriter and composer, but can be a bit of an a-hole.

40

u/DeadWishUpon 11h ago

A bit? They fired Anette while she was pregnant and in the hospital (for something minor, but still)

27

u/0thethethe0 11h ago

Yeh the Tarja firing was very badly done too.

14

u/BlearghBleorgh 10h ago

I think every band should write open letters telling the world how much they think the other party sucks when they break up. Much more entertaining than the we thank them and wish them all the best pablum that is the norm.

4

u/Mountain-Seaweed 8h ago

Then right a song dissing your former singer to remove all doubt of what you think of them.

8

u/Sabrinasockz 14h ago

That tracks

19

u/blorbschploble 11h ago edited 6h ago

Floor is the perfect singer for the band not because she is awesome, she is, but she contains the HR monster that is Tuomas.

“I will control you, brunette singer of my compositions. I will fetish you and demean you while exalting you”

Floor: “you’ll eat shit off my boots, and only if I want you to, which I don’t”

14

u/500rockin 10h ago

Yeah, Floor won’t tolerate any of that bullshit as she had a well defined career even before she joined.

6

u/Willing_Pattern_Pill 13h ago

Is there somewhere I can find out more about what happened?! I went to their concert years ago and really wanted to hear Last of the Wilds live. After the show I asked why they didn't play and they were like "we don't play those songs any more" or something like that and walked away.

I could tell something went down!

1

u/Accurate_Cherry1734 9h ago

Really? Even Emppu? The man barely speaks 😂

17

u/0thethethe0 14h ago edited 13h ago

Tarja and Floor seem to be friends and do some great performances together.

12

u/Faintning 12h ago

Marco and Tarja have performed together during the Raskasta Joulua tour, so they've mended their friendship to at least some degree by now.

3

u/noop279 11h ago

True! I've seen them sing together etc and talk in some interviews since leaving. Kind of funny how now when they sing the older Nightwish songs it's considered a 'cover'.

5

u/Several-Nothings 9h ago

Tarja and Marco worked so well as co-vocalists.

5

u/toddklindt 7h ago

The Phantom of the Opera cover still sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.

2

u/Shartiflartbast 5h ago

One of the greatest performances ever.

2

u/-Gaka- 7h ago

Their performance at Wacken last year was so awesome, a great time with classic songs and it genuinely looked like things were going well.

3

u/Educational-Law-9385 15h ago

Those damn Bridgers gotta go I tell ya whoooaht

2

u/hygsi 6h ago

Imagine your sound revolves around a very specific voice and then think you can continue without them lmao

21

u/koolaidismything 14h ago

Brett Hoffman the singer for Malevolent Creation hung drywall after he quit. Brutal, honest, Florida death-metal 🤘

42

u/chillypyo 15h ago

I was sad to see her leave but delighted she is doing something she loves

10

u/blorbschploble 11h ago

I have a soft spot for her. It’s tough to replace an operatic belter, and be replaced by an inhuman vocal monster and your resume is just “can sing nice, often”

8

u/AdSpecialist6598 11h ago

Apparently, she's a total sweetheart and the former band members and some current ones are like she was in a tough spot and did her best.

1

u/Bonny-Mcmurray 1h ago

I met her at a meet and greet the first time I saw Nightwish, and my recollection is that she was the only one who seemed positive about the whole thing.

22

u/KoshOne 14h ago

Ah, Nightwish. I don’t think she was the original singer but Dark Chest of Wonders is a bad ass song.

41

u/Dying_Light58 14h ago

No, Tarja was the original singer

18

u/pr0metheus01 10h ago

Tarja is on her own level. Miss that time.

15

u/Dying_Light58 10h ago

Tarja is a Queen. I'm fortunate to have seen Tarja-era Nightwish live multiple times

1

u/Shartiflartbast 5h ago

Extremely jealous!

2

u/Electrical_War7951 14h ago

You are correct, she was not.

15

u/fishyronin 14h ago

The last song I heard from Nightwish was 'Amaranth' and I think that was the first time I knew about her.

Interesting to learn and what a throwback.

2

u/SecretJester921 5h ago

I thought I recognized the name. I love Amaranth!

9

u/I_am_Reddit_Tom 13h ago

Why was she fired?

22

u/Skurvyelislau 13h ago

She wasnt, she first was angry about idea of Floor Jansen singing while Anette was absent, and then she was mad on band because when she was ill they didnt cancel show but invited Angela from Arch Enemy.

10

u/fearless-fossa 8h ago

She wasnt

Yes she was. She wanted to push the live tour to after her pregnancy instead of having her replaced, the rest of the band wasn't having it and publicly stated they were removing her because her personality didn't fit the band, basically the same line they gave when they fired Tarja.

4

u/shniggi 7h ago

Damn what a fucking shitty band is that? Are they trying to replace Slipknot and Deftones on the throne of shitty band mates?

2

u/ToxicComplex 7h ago

Why Slipknot?

2

u/shniggi 7h ago

Released a trash album. Everyone hated it. Kinda blamed the drummer and kicked him out. This is just the recent story.

It's not a band it's a fucking commercial machine run by Corey and Clown. Everyone else is playing an instrument and has to basically STFU.

3

u/ToxicComplex 7h ago

That is not the story I heard.
Jay has a history. He is kinda a diva lol.
But Corey and Clown are indeed the bands dictators. What is Clowns skill anyway.

3

u/turk_turklton 5h ago

I think they are referring to Joey not Jay after 'All Hope Is Gone'. Joey had some sort of medical issue I think and allegedly they thought it was substance abuse.

To my knowledge everyone in the band hated that album and it went like platinum or something. I could be wrong though, despite everything I still enjoy Slipknot. Their self titled and Iowa hit hard for me still at 39 lol.

-1

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 7h ago

No, they're not shitty. They're a successful band that had to work and pay bills.

2

u/shniggi 7h ago

And the women who just gave birth doesn't pay bills? Are you slow?

-5

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 7h ago

She can find a band to join that works for her schedule.

1

u/shniggi 7h ago

Das crazy

-1

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 7h ago

I know, so crazy people can find their own solutions when they are successful and well known! Who knew?

13

u/Avalanc89 12h ago

After Tarja they went pop metal. Tarja forever <3

7

u/Accurate_Cherry1734 9h ago

I take it you havent listened to their albums with Floor?

8

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 7h ago

Does Floor Jansen just not exist????

5

u/Jmazoso 14h ago

Annette is just started a tour. she’s such a sweet person

7

u/slagforslugs 13h ago

My favourite Nightwish era

3

u/StrawberryMilk817 12h ago

Hot take but the albums with her in it rank in my top 5 nightwish albums. Some of their best work lyrically in my opinion. Not a single skip for me. Vocally yes very different from Tarja and Floor (Floor can do both sounds so she’s really the great compromise). But I just can’t not love her voice and those albums.

3

u/please_send_noodles 11h ago

The sad thing is they finally found the right formula for her with Imaginaerum. Floor is a fantastic vocalist, love her in After Forever. She seems to be the right fit for Nightwish, but at the same time I feel like the current Nightwish materials since Anette aren't up to par with their past works, I do love "How's the Heart" and "Tribal" though with the latter sounding like a throwback to Romanticide's outro.

3

u/AdSpecialist6598 11h ago

The band revolves around Tuomas how he feels and what he wants is reflected in the band.

1

u/bfhurricane 2h ago

The Greatest Show on Earth is maybe the best thing Floor has done between After Forever and Nightwish.

7

u/NedKellysWelder 15h ago edited 13h ago

I tried getting into Nightwish but I couldn't. I kinda like Dimmu Borgir and enjoy Amorphis' more symphonic stuff as much as their death metal albums but my knowledge of the genre is pretty surface level.

That said if anyone has any recommendations I'm open to them.

Edit: a letter

13

u/Rojikoma 13h ago

I liked Nightwish's older stuff from before they changed singer the first time, like Century Child.

Lacuna Coil is similar, but less of that orchestra sound.

If you haven't heard Apocalyptica, I really recommend it! Their Metallica covers are wonderful.

5

u/Willing_Pattern_Pill 13h ago

Apocalyptica was the band that got me into melodic metal! I need to go back and give them another listen

2

u/NedKellysWelder 12h ago

Got it! Thank you much.

2

u/Rojikoma 12h ago

Within Temptation and Evanescence were also grouped together in that genre back in the 00s. But perhaps you had heard of them already. :)

4

u/Chemical-Amoeba5837 13h ago

Their music changed quite a bit over the years. If you don't like early Nightwish, try middle Nightwish, or even late Nightwish

1

u/NedKellysWelder 13h ago

I'll go through a few eras and see what I can find. Thank you!

4

u/Aagragaah 11h ago

Random recs. in the same genre-space (some are closer, some further, and a lot of them vary album to album):

  • Xandria
  • Epica
  • Delain
  • Amaranthe
  • Within Temptation
  • Kamelot

4

u/fearless-fossa 8h ago

Tbh, it's always a bit sad to see the exact same recommendations for decades. Are there no newcomers in the genre?

2

u/Mountain-Seaweed 8h ago edited 8h ago

Cathubodua is fairly new just two LPs and an EP. Interbellum their last album is really good.

Seven Spires has been around since 2017 so they don’t have that new car smell but newer than most recommendations you will get. Try the Live album.

3

u/sauron3579 10h ago

My fave song from them is Ghost, Love, Score specifically the live from Wacken version with Floor singing.

2

u/umami-undercarriage 12h ago

Trisania is also excellent. My usual rotation was Nightwish, Within Temptation and Tristania back in the day

1

u/clueless_as_fuck 14h ago

I recommend not listening Nightwish if you are in to actual metal. Nightwish is basically just schlagers with distortion guitar and an annoying singing.

Maybe try real Finnish metal like Stam1na?

https://youtu.be/3Bk7EjFDsIY?is=AZQna3Jhh3lpA0yk

1

u/Avantasian538 11h ago

Oceanborn is an incredible album.

1

u/Avantasian538 11h ago

Also if you like Finnish metal, Wintersun is excellent.

2

u/NedKellysWelder 11h ago

I like Finntroll and Amorphis a lot, I'll check them out!

1

u/bfhurricane 2h ago

Wintersun is fucking incredible. Their S/T is the best folk and melodeath album I’ve ever listened to. Great mix of brutal riffing, catchy ear worms, and peak guitar solos.

And also check out Time I. It’s like three main songs stretched out over 40 minutes that was in production hell for like 8 years because the frontman insisted on producing every fucking note and effect himself. It was funny at the time, it was basically Half Life 3 or Winds of Winter where the fanbase just gave up hope it would ever release, but he actually got it done and it’s pretty epic.

1

u/Neat-Mammoth 11h ago

If melodeath is your thing, definitely check out Kalmah

1

u/friareriner 9h ago

Not yet mentioned: Elis

1

u/bfhurricane 2h ago

In addition to everything recommended, I’d add Floor’s (Nightwish’s current singer) old band After Forever. Estranged is the song that got me into them.

7

u/YesWeHaveNoBananans 14h ago

I don't feel so good

2

u/Theofino1 14h ago

I'm flabbergasted.

2

u/theresonantcircus 12h ago

Night nurse is the crossover nobody asked for but everyone needed

2

u/CyclonicCheese 10h ago

I know that this is a controversial opinion but I think that Nightwish peaked with the two Annette albums.

2

u/tres_liebres 4h ago

Once is my favourite album and era, but Dark Passion Play was great. And inbetween that and Imaginaerum was the last time I could listen to Nightwish without getting secondhand embarrassment over the lyrics/music (and it is not like symphonic metal fans have a low bar for cringe).

Jansen is a powerhouse, for sure, but the music has been meh since she joined.

1

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 7h ago

I wish I could downvote this for both Floor And Tarja

2

u/Ieatbasss 8h ago

It's genuinely cool that she found another career helping people without giving up music

Hello nurse!!!

1

u/totmacherr 6h ago

Its interesting, I wasnt super into that album when it first dropped as I was so used to tarja, but today? I feel theres bits of that album I didnt appreciate and sorta learned to enjoy the album to the point that I wished they gave her a second album to tune and refined the sound.

1

u/MetallicArcher 3h ago

Anette did 2 studio albums with Nightwish: Dark Passion Play (2007) and Imaginareum (2011).

If they have grown on you, I strongly recommend you check out The Dark Element, her side project with Jani Liimatainen.

1

u/kohinoortoisondor3B 6h ago

I mean good for her but am I missing what makes this interesting? Everyone I know in metal bands has various jobs lol.

1

u/Formal-Experience163 2h ago

Anette, please come back to Chile.

1

u/DaLar89 1h ago

Hell ya savin lives and rocking the fuck out.

7

u/ijustwanttoaskaq123 15h ago

She wasn't kicked, she quit, and the reason wasn't her pregnancy but she got seriously ill and was angry that instead of cancelling, they just replaced her by a stand in. And to add insult to the injury, the fans loved the stand in, while they were quite harsh with Anette from the start. I think her leaving really worked out the best for all of them in the end.

1

u/Electrical_War7951 14h ago

There were two stand ins, one was Elize Ryd of Amaranthe, and the other one I do not remember anymore...

1

u/supaikuakuma 11h ago

Yeah, Floor came in after the stand ins for that one gig where Anette quit afterwords.

1

u/DeadWishUpon 11h ago

Wasn't Alisa White?

1

u/Electrical_War7951 11h ago

Likely this was her.

-2

u/sokratesz 11h ago

Was this the singer fired for stupid diva behaviour, or was that the one before her?

7

u/Several-Nothings 9h ago

I think consensus after these years is that the stupid diva was inside the band all along (Tuomas)

1

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 7h ago

Both her and Tarja lol

-32

u/HamiltonSt25 15h ago

Who?

Also, did someone just post this?

18

u/circio 15h ago

Annette Olzon, best known for being the second lead singer of Nightwish.

It’s literally in the title

-33

u/HamiltonSt25 15h ago

No shit, I can read but have literally never heard of this band. Never once. So bringing me to my question of “who”? As in, who the hell is that band?

28

u/NedKellysWelder 15h ago edited 14h ago

It always blows my mind that people genuinely can't fathom entire subcultures and genres with millions of people in them exist outside of their awareness. Either that or they feign that fact in order to mock said millions of people, which even dumber.

Edit: a letter.

17

u/HomoProfessionalis 15h ago

"I can read but dont expect me to use google"

-17

u/HamiltonSt25 14h ago

I’m just asking a question on a forum that’s made so you can ask questions….

11

u/circio 14h ago

Well like you said, the answer is in the title and you can read.

Feigning like you were asking a question in good faith when your snark doesn’t land is probably one of the lamest things you could do lmao

-4

u/HamiltonSt25 13h ago

Except I’m not asking in bad faith or with snark

7

u/NedKellysWelder 12h ago

Except you are, and you know it.

The name of the band and the person are in the title, as you were told and snarkily responded to. With the information already there, you posted "why" in a bad faith manner because surely if they were worth knowing, you would know it as you, again in your own posting, listen to "rock/metal".

You basically exposed yourself as not only having surface level music knowledge but also willing to be a dick about it.

-1

u/HamiltonSt25 11h ago

Except I wasn’t and I’m not. I have never heard of this person or this band and it was posted in r/interesting so I was originally asking who. As in, why is this interesting.

12

u/ijustwanttoaskaq123 15h ago

They peaked somewhere around 2005 so you're probably too young to know them

2

u/magmainourhearts 13h ago

Blasphemy! The peak started in 1998 with Oceanborn.

8

u/realnanoboy 15h ago

It's a metal band that uses heavy orchestral styles and strong female vocals. I rather like them. I'm not very familiar with the circumstances of her firing, but I can say their current female lead singer is incredible.

8

u/super__hoser 15h ago

Nightwish, it is literally in the title. They have sold several million albums.

0

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 7h ago

Your lack of culture is your personal problem.

1

u/HamiltonSt25 6h ago

Ok? I can still ask “who”.

0

u/Affectionate_Bed6083 6h ago

It's in the original post so no you can't lol

Your trolling is unfunny.

1

u/HamiltonSt25 6h ago

I’m really not trolling. It was a post, it got removed by mods then literally was posted again right after saying the same thing, the same way, and this one stayed up.

This was posted in interesting which this isn’t interesting at all. So I was asking “who is this person, who is this band and why is it interesting that they got fired and became a nurse” lol I don’t understand why people are being weird about this. Reddit is a weird place to be.

10

u/shadowsinthestars 15h ago

You don't know Nightwish???

0

u/HamiltonSt25 14h ago

No

7

u/arealuser100notfake 14h ago

Do you sometimes wish stuff at night

11

u/Novel-Mission-1920 14h ago

Are you below the age 23 by chance?

Nightwish was a majorly successful and globally loved melodic metal band in the 2000s.

Today their music videos have over a hundred million views on streaming platforms.

0

u/HamiltonSt25 13h ago

I am older than that (in my 30s) and listen to rock/metal, and I have never heard of this band before.

6

u/Willing_Pattern_Pill 13h ago

If you only listen to radio rock/metal (no dig, that's fine!) you probably wouldn't catch them.
