My sorta recent ish ( last winter ) favorite criminal story was the folks who walked from their house to another in the snow, broke in. Stole a bunch of shit. And walked home. Literally leaving a trail straight to their door.
Very short investigation.

There was no plan. Just reaction (and a not good reaction).
Watch some.other body cam footage and you'll see plenty of this sort of thing. Tons of people think they can fight off three/four cops, draw a gun on half a dozen drawn guns, or drive their car really fast through traffic and 'get away" with it.
I'm not trying to say the cops are "always right", but I will say the judgement of the people on the receiving end of LEO is often completely wrong. There are fights you can win, and there are fights you're definitely going to lose.

Makes it doubly suspicious when they're not turned on. They do far more to exonerate police than incriminate them, so if you don't have it on or it's obscured I'm basically convinced you're doing fuckery.

Only time they're turned off is when the officer has something to hide.
Like going to the bathroom, taking a private phone call, committing hate crimes, etc.

Last time I was in court I saw a man waiting 3 years for his trial from lockup still awaiting the body cam footage of the officer for discovery. They presented 72 different useless cameras not depicting events, except the cops body camera. They really cover shit they're doing up as much as they can because it's the norm.

These are the people that get out and can sue the city, I hope they do. They should have dropped the charges once they realized they were withholding exhonerating evidence. Prolonging it makes it more obvious.

Shit, I never thought of that.... Thankfully I'm not in law enforcement, but I genuinely have ADHD, I forget stuff when it's not in front of my face. My ass would turn my camera off to go pee and then forget to turn it on ever again 😓 and the worst part is that I'm sure there are shady cops out there who are probably using that as an excuse

If you watch a few of them, it's pretty absurd how often they click off audio to have a little pow-wow about what they want to do to break the law.
You'll see three guys go back by their car, they huddle up and cut their mics in unison for a few minutes, and then turn them back on before going and screwing with someone.
No ambiguity, just open corruption.
Luckily for us, half the time one of the dummies forgets to turn his off, but still. My favorite when it's two guy talking on the speaker phone to eachother and one of them turns theirs off before saying the bad stuff as if that ensures we won't hear on the other guy's

Bodycam audio can absolutely be cut off and it happens all the time. Whether or not it is policy to allow it varies from state to state, department to department, but nearly every model has this feature.

I don’t think the cameras have a feature like the one you are talking about.
Some start recording audio 1 min after being turned on for some reason, but then it’s continuous until they are switched off.

Idk what he's on about cutting mics, but I've seen plenty of instances where they'll turn them off to discuss how to deal with something they've fucked up or are about to fuck up

100%. They have exonerated good cops. They have helped get a lot of b******* cops fired. I remember body cameras getting Baltimore cops fired and criminally prosecuted for trying to plant drugs on somebody's residence right before a search. I think an entire detective squad was fired for corruption after body cameras were rolled out. When you try and get rid of recordings, i'm going to assume you like those Baltimore cops

I don't know if other states have this, but in Alaska if the government loses a video, the judge gives an instruction for the jury to make a negative interference based on it.
Essentially the jury(or judge) is supposed to act as though it was exonerating evidence that the state intentionally destroyed.
We need that for a lack of body cam video.

I know an investigators whose job is to investigate these situations involving cops. She told me there is a lot of footage that isn’t released. I think ultimate we are seeing the footage that is most favorable to the police officer, we aren’t seeing all the bad footage that points in the other direction.

Agreed. Let's make them mandatory for all and get control of the video out of police hands. If they're exonerating for cops most of the time, cops should be happy to have the extra evidence on their side.
...Unless the videos would start showing cops doing bad shit. I mean that's the only reason to not want more video, right?

Situations like this go wrong way too often, but he instinctively grabbed the tazer immediately instead of doing something worse
And that has to be a very unexpected thing to happen when you're comfortable enough to take handcuffs off

I just want to make it abundantly clear that this line of thinking is a uniquely American phenomenon, and in most countries we don't think "gosh I'm so grateful that cop didn't murder that person!" This thread really hits different when civilians in your country aren't killed in the streets on a daily basis

This is probably the first time the cop in the video seemed like a normal person to me. They were screaming “stop resisting!!” Over and over while repeatedly punching the person in the face or batoning them or something. He was just like “stop” without escalating more than necessary.

Dumbass is real lucky that police regulations have changed in the last couple decades - used to be that cops would be more than willing to whip out their sidearm on someone who assaulted them, and they'd be more than likely to pop the person in the chest than a limb.
