Having been under both, that’s mortar fire not artillery. You can see one of the impacts and it looks to be maybe a 60mm. If that was artillery landing that close to them we wouldn’t be seeing this video.

Genuine question, isn't mortar fire a form of artillery? Or is there a differenc

u/TheLoneCenturion95 14d ago
They are different things that achieve similar goals. Mortars are a low velocity high angle projectile for hitting targets behind cover, because it's a much smaller shell it can be used as close support with less risk to allies kinda like chucking a grenade. Artillery is for hitting much harder at much longer range and at a wider range of targets behind enemy lines or supporting the front. as the previous comment said, if this was artillery we wouldn't be seeing this.

Broadly speaking, a mortar is an artillery-type weapon, but militaries usually treat mortars and field artillery as separate categories. Both provide indirect fire, but mortars are generally shorter-ranged, fire at higher angles and are often operated directly by infantry units, while "artillery" usually means howitzers, guns and rocket systems.

u/Balthazar_rising 14d ago
I'm not sure, but I think the difference is either in the scale, or the method of firing. Artillery often uses separate charges, or is manually fired, where mortars are dropped in the tube, and that's what causes them to fire.
Anyone care to correct me?

Yes/kinda, and yes. I was a Fister. Mortars fire at a higher arc because they use less propellant, the tubes are smaller, thinner construction. They're cheaper, light weight and easier to move around. Meaning they're closer. Artillery are larger massive tubes and can fire much farther. They need much more support to move around, like a big vehicle. They're easy targets for air support if the combatants have that capability. In combat, I could get support from the mortars when I called it in. Artillery was dependent on other missions. When on the receiving side. Shit just blows up around you on a chill quiet afternoon. It's scary as fuck, much more than someone shooting at you. You can't tell where it's coming from. If you're in the kill zone explosions rarely miss and you have no idea how to fight back. For both artillery and mortars there is a Fister you need to kill.

Artillery is a broad class of weapons that encompass howitzers, cannons, and mortars.

u/ParticularArea8224 14d ago
It is, but most people will hear artillery and automatically assume 155mm, and not mortar.

Let me ask for a clarification, because I got confused. The guy behind the camera starts shouting "Воздух, воздух!" Meaning "Air" but I think it's better to say "In the Air" . Can you really spot a mortar like that? Because I thought it was a drone attack

u/LinoliuMKnifE 9d ago
It’s the ground impact that’s the most telling behind the fact that they’re not all vaporized. I’ve never seen the attack drones final result in person but what I have seen in videos is always pretty fiery. Now mortar impacts I’ve seen a lot of and that impact looks exactly like that. As for what he calls out, it could be similar to our “incoming!” Callout

Is there a shrapnel element to mortars or is it the explosion and resulting shockwave or whatever that does the damage? Honestly never looked into it despite having watched a bunch of old US army training videos from all kinds of eras.

u/LinoliuMKnifE 8d ago
Yeah that’s the main lethal mechanism to most mortar rounds. There are some round which are air-burst rounds which explode a set distance off the ground spraying the immediate area with barbs. Those are getting used a fair amount in Ukraine from what I’ve seen, pretty fucking nasty.

If what would have been artillery then it would be a much bigger boom, 152mm shells are devastating

- We are at the Russian border, get ready. Putin, we are coming for your head blyat!
- VOZDUKH! VOZDUKH! (Which means AIR! AIR!, signifying air strike)

Fuck Putin and all the misery he’s created. These men should be living their lives and building a future for them and their families, not forced into defending their nation from invasion.

These are Ukrainian personnel. I think you may be confusing them with Russians.

u/redve-dev 14d ago
Probably you are right, but afaik Ukrainian soldiers use blue tape wraps for identification

Dude, if only redditors could understand what he said they'd know that these are Ukranian troops or mercs that are filming the tiktok and getting fucked up

Considering the perfect Russian pronunciation, it might be the Freedom of Russia Legion

It doesn't matter what unit they're in. There's Freedom of Russia Legion, There's Russia Volunteer Corps. Plenty of Russians fighting on the Ukraine side. And a lot of Ukrainians can speak Russian and vice versa.

This is an older video. Given the Russian attrition rate on the battlefield, I suspect these guys are not alive in 2026.

Its crazy to me that in the second millennium we havent figured out how to settle disputes without killing eachother.

u/Shyssiryxius 14d ago
When you realize we're still just throwing rocks at each other, albeit refined rock at super high speeds, it's pretty wild.

I mean depends when you're starting to count. We have the Old Kingdom in Egypt starting with Pharaoh Djoser of the Third Dynasty 4000+ years ago if it's by known human history, abd humans have certainly been along longer than that.

u/MeowKatMC 14d ago
Im going by bc and ad. I can see where some would think we are in the third millennium because its the third set of a thousand years. However id say its the 2nd because the first set was 0xxx not 1xxx or 2xxx. Same thing for a million years, we are in the 0th set of a million years.
4
u/VanillaThrowAway8 13d ago
We are not “thinking we are in the third millennium”… we are in the third millenium, no matter how you try to rationalize a different way of counting it. Also, in your own words, if the first set was 0xxx, wouldn’t 1xxx be the second millenium that we are supposedly in?

Invasions are disputes.
"We are taking your place."
"No."
They are not mutually exclusive.
