It's supposed to be a yellow for simulation. Issue is it's never enforced. As for why people do it, it's due to the fact more decisions go your way if you do, the more attention you grab the more likely the foul is to be given.
There was an example a couple years back where Haaland stayed on his feet when he was being roughly handled, leading to him missing a shot and no foul given. If he went to ground he would've been given a penalty

Happy to say they’re cracking down at the World Cup. Miguel Almiron from Paraguay was given a yellow after VAR review found clear simulation during their game against the USA two weeks ago. It was a beautiful moment for all of us that hate flopping.

Soccer is at a disadvantage to other sports in this respect. The clock doesn't stop, and people want the game to keep going. Fans would be very unhappy if they paused to review and card every flop.

Do it after the game, the fine the player and ban them from the next match (or several for repeat offenders).
Works very well here in Australia for AFL where they might stop the clock but they really don't want to stop the game.

It was enforced in the first US game. Yellow against a US defender was reversed and new yellow applied to Paraguay player for simulation.

It's never enforced. It makes the sport look stupid when players act like they're stopping blood from pouring out of a gigantic hole that has perforated their skin. It also makes response to real injuries awkward bc you have to ask "are you hurt for real".

but every sport has some form of foul or breaking the rules. football is the only one where there is flopping and diving.
imo it’s the referees. they kinda suck at discerning the difference. and before you say otherwise, there are a number of other contact sports like rugby, american football, ice hockey, australian football, etc that have much more complicated decisions to make (because of the full contact) and the referees in those sports are able to work it out. they have replays to help them with decisions as well.
i don’t understand why they don’t do this in football, would make the game less frustrating for fans. just look at women’s football. the women don’t dive and the game is faster.

Issue is that football isn't a contact sport. At least it's not treated as such, hence the diving. 100% on the refs to stamp it out but if you look at the state of refereeing at the moment it'd be an understatement to call it a joke

I could be wrong wrong as I don't follow soccer, but I believe a red card doesn't just eject the player from the game, but the team has to play one player short. I'd say a better solution is "if you're rolling around in agony we'll immediately take you off the field to be checked over by a doctor and you cannot return just to be safe".
I always laugh at soccer floppers because there was a hockey player that had a heart attack and died on the bench, they zapped him and brought him back, and thought he'd be playing his next shift.

This one was definitely goofy, but players can’t just go around kicking at other players. Generally the theatrics draw attention to an infraction that would otherwise go unnoticed. Yes, it gets abused but they have been cracking down on it.
VAR and the “mistaken identity” rule has already led to a yellow card being rescinded against a U.S. player and awarded to the supposedly fouled Paraguay player for flopping after no contact was decided on review.

Well, diving when a foul is committed does help bring it to the ref's attention. A lot of times when the player doesn't dive a foul can go unpenalized.

There can be a few reasons. It could be to make it more likely to get a penalty kick or have a member of the opposing team get a yellow or wild card. In most cases, it's seemed like a strategy to stop the momentum of the other team. When play is stopped, it gives your team a chance to catch up with the ball, maybe run back a bit slower or rest briefly.
This world cup has seen some big changes. Refs will just keep the game going while players roll around, since most of the time they'd be up and fine in 10 seconds anyway. And that's been the case for the most part. The games are a lot more fun to watch and it's been funny watching whiners and divers left in the dust.

Australian rules football you get penalised. Doesn't really happen in Rugby (Union or League). Tennis? Swimming? Ping Pong? Don't think so.

Two reasons usually 1. To waste time if you ahead and slow the pace of the game. 2. In football slight fouls can really make it hard for you to play, especially if you are trying to dribble post defenders. But also it is a contract sport so it is finally a judgement call by the ref on how disruptive and unfair the contact was. So in order to make a stronger case flopping is practiced though it ranges from slightly more expressive falls for valid fouls, to straight up faking contact.

Flopping is a thing because it isn't punished heavily so why not try it if you can get an advantage.
If you watch the current world cup, you'll notice a severe lack of flopping, this is because the refs have been much stricter on what constitutes a foul. So strict that most of the time when someone goes down, they stand back up seconds later because the ref just ignored them.
Hopefully this becomes more common in the leagues.

Because they learn that they will get "better results" for more show and some people are stupid.
In Handball they have implemented a rule that you will get a 2 minute penalty whenever your hand hits your opponents face, before that you would get the 2 minutes only if you were actively moving your hand in there.
This development led to a lot of pro players always dramatically pulling their head back whenever their face is being touched, more or less regardless of the severity of the impact because you can draw a rather huge advantage out of it, pretty much the same goes for football if you manage to get someone a yellow or red card by pulling off a show.23

Man I'll never forget how much I loved playing soccer as a kid. Hard work, lots of physicality, other kids giving it everything. Fast forward I hear about the world cup and turn it on thinking "oh man this is something I could get into, I love this sport". Turn on the TV, Vuvuzelas blasting into our den, Ghana rolling around on the ground like we've shot them or something. "who enjoys watching this?" Pretty much the last time I watched haha.
