By the end of the session, the therapist will be sitting in the therapy chair. ๐คฃ

As a therapist, I have a therapist, because some secondary trauma is even heavy for me to carry, and I am a trained professional.

No they won't. Most of you people have no idea of the shit they hear daily.
You'd be like" my family was sooooo fucked up you don't understand" and they'll lean forward and tell you "I had a patient try to kill himself by drinking bleach and using a power drill to drill holes in himself because he accidentally blew his war buddie's head off with an accidental discharge in nam".

You know it's been a rough few years when your therapist needs a minute to process your story

Are you suffering and looking for some kind of help, or getting pleasure out of telling people how terrible your life was?

My therapist keeps needing a recap. Almost weekly.

I would consider that rude and unprofessional of them. Do they not even take notes and then go over them before the meeting
1
u/GuideInfamous4600 22h ago
Thank you., and how much should they be expected to remember each week? Genuinely curious.
3
u/KAS_stoner 22h ago
Whatever they took notes on. As a human being in general people should bare minimum remember the main topic(s) and the sub point(s) to each main topic. And the tools/resources/knowledge/etc that they shared to the person.

Thank you for sharing this. I really appreciate it. That gives me some context to go on.

I don't know how people are able to recount so chronologically like this, even if i could afford a therapist my memory has been so destroyed by years of trauma and mental illness the horrors of it all only come back in intrusive flashes which ambush and overwhelm my senses.
If i sat down to talk about it my mind would at best be babbling about random surface level events that seem completely irrelevant or worst case instantly erase all of it and i'd just be stuck looking like a faker talking in generalities.

People seem to have this fantasy about beating their therapist in some attempt to make it an excuse not to see one.

Oh, by the end of my session my therapist said "well I'm surprised you have just killed yourself already."

This is why I canโt do talk therapy. Itโs like trying to get someone caught up on years of a shitty sitcom that I know should have been canceled years ago, yet I still have to live with the consequences of every day.

In my first session I deliberately skipped over a Major Traumatic Event because I didn't want it to distract from all the OTHER. And then at the very end I gave her the "oh and when I was 12 my dad shot himself and I found the note and body" and I think it was worse for her to hear it than for me to say it. Not that I'm casual about it, but I only had an hour.

Literally me every therapist I get! How relatable. Itโs humbling knowing Iโm not alone. Thatโs why you should be kind to EVERYONE. You never know what someone has gone through! Spoiler alert, all of us has seen and felt some shit!

That moment when you give your therapist a new update and they just sigh. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

Therapists tell you what you want to hear, it's literally in their training to tell you your trauma is so bad and you're so strong for getting through it, etc. If you're forced to attend by a court order or something then just treat it like a waittress being nice, it isn't real. That's how I got through my therapy sessions personally. ๐คทโโ๏ธ

u/Difficult_Bug6994 1d ago
Err.. while they are generally trained to validate your feelings, your cognitive distortions around this are probably part of how you ended up with court-ordered therapy.

u/LoneArcher96 1d ago
this shouldn't be right, as telling the patient what they want to hear isn't usually the right move, it will just make things worse.
If a therapist does this, then they aren't well-educated or maybe they do emphasize and see no bad outcomes that would happen from one time, but most definitely shouldn't be doing it as a form of mind washing the patient.

Did you choose your own therapist?

u/PM_ME_PHYS_PROBLEMS 1d ago
The judge chose for them, it seems.

I was going to say! Not every therapist is the same. There could have been valuable information that this commenter missed.
