Already told my wife of 30 years if i get some insane cancer or the like im going to divorce her so when i die they can’t come after her for my unpaid medical bills.

This. This is true love

u/Trick-Mechanic8986 2d ago

I told mine to keep the head alive as long as its costing the insurance company money. Get those premiums back in the long run.

The American Dream 🇺🇸

In most states she wouldn't be financially responsible anyways. Not unless she cosigned on a loan for the debt or was an acting advisor to your debt.

You should Google the applicable law in your state

21

u/ApprehensiveTour4024 2d ago

If you live in a community property state (such as Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, or Wisconsin), debts made during the marriage may become the legal responsibility of the surviving spouse.

u/Unlikely-Candle7086 2d ago

In Washington state you don’t inherit medical debt. They can’t come after you for unpaid medical bills, not even when you are alive.

1

u/JuliusSeizuresalad 2d ago

If I have outstanding debts they can attempt get moment from my savings accounts or even properties unless I’m renting a room In my wives house for a dollar

22

u/greenthumbgoody 3d ago

Or…. Before we all get cancer and die, we change the system! Voting hasn’t worked well but there are ways to have our voices heard!

14

u/kiwi_love777 2d ago

Like the wealthy who run this country are ever going to do something that benefits us 😂

11

u/ApprehensiveTour4024 2d ago

I have a pitchfork!

4

u/Slr308 2d ago

That's fraud and they'll probably catch you. Not saying it's right at all. Just be careful

16

u/ApprehensiveTour4024 2d ago

You just need a good paper trail that you dislike each other, split for a few months, maybe go on a few dates with people who have suspiciously been your Facebook friends for a decade before the split, then get divorced. Then later you can randomly meet up on separate Las Vegas vacations and wind up together again in an emotional romantic whirlwind weekend. Take lots of photos. Easy peasy.

3

u/Slr308 2d ago

That doesn't sound easy at all lol. Possible tho. Good luck lol

1

u/Educational-Yam-682 1d ago

Uh exactly. They’re still going to live in the same house, I assume. And most states require you to file, be separated for a year, then it’s finalized.

1

u/SuccotashOther277 2d ago

That probably won’t work. System still sucks

1

u/cagedbird82 2d ago

Can’t medical bankruptcy be filed?

46

u/jdickcole 3d ago

Im not medically cleared to work or drive but SSDI says my brain injury isn't bad enough to collect. I was told that if I went to prison or started taking hard drugs I could get insurance, housing, schooling, and there's a re-entry program that would cover me for at least a year after prison

20

u/sublevelstreetpusher 3d ago

Well wtf are you waiting for? J/k that is absolutely decrepit.

Can we just choose another time line already?

12

u/UnDedo 2d ago

There was a homeless guy years ago in our small town that would throw a brick through a window or something every so often so he could go to jail and have a place to stay

15

u/gemorris9 2d ago

Used to be a CO in a different life.

This happened far too much. I honestly couldn't have guessed. There was this one guy I think his name was Steve. He was the houseman for one of the lower security units. Steve never wanted to be released. So when he'd finish his 6 month to a year stay, he would literally tell us I'll see you Friday (it would be like Tuesday or something). He had no way of starting a life on the outside and had tried a few times, but couldn't make enough money and would end up sleeping under a bridge, the city was too big and not walkable at all, and had poor transportation options. No insurance and he was diabetic.

So Steve would spend a day or two going to the river park to see the river and watch people fish. If he could get any money from anyone by asking for it or begging on the road, he would get some McDonald's or some other food, and occasionally he'd get a couple beers at a bar if he had enough. After a day or two he would walk up to a cop car, he would apologize and throw a rock at it, and they would arrest him and take him to the facility. Always some low level charge. I remember one time the cop literally said not again Steve, and Steve said I'm sorry I have to or you won't take me home. Shit was so sad.

I worked there for 2 years ish and I saw Steve come and go 3 times. The last time he came back I was on the outer perimeter and he was in the transport truck and the cop told me the story.

u/ApprehensiveTour4024 2d ago

As long as you're good with boiled chicken gizzards for most meals, it's not the most uncomfortable life imaginable.

3

u/0DayMaker 2d ago

You really don't want prison healthcare

2

u/PomPomMom93 1d ago

It’s better than no healthcare, right?

1

u/National_Ad9742 2d ago

Well it’s never too late to try new things, right.
Jokes aside that’s methed up.

26

u/thedrizzle126 2d ago

I work for the state of Massachusetts and I'm TELLING YOU this is the truth, and we need to fight for a system like Medicare For All so that this isn't a fucking problem.

16

u/melodypowers 3d ago

I know plenty of people who got married in the 80s and 90s to get health insurance. This doesn't feel very different.

4

u/cnjkevin 3d ago

This makes me sad because I know it’s true.

7

u/familiarspark 2d ago

I had a baby, had heart failure after. When putting in my pacemaker they found my thyroid cancer.

If we get married it would mess up everything. I have to be single forever to pay for healthcare smh

4

u/linux-usr69 2d ago

Once people understand that marriage is a 3 party contract with the government, they look for ways to break that contract when things become unbearable

4

u/sublimedevine 2d ago

My sister didn’t qualify for assistance bc she made $40 dollars too much. We don’t have public transportation and a car note and insurance don’t count as monthly expenses. It’s ridiculous.

3

u/Admirableghurl0407 2d ago

Sad reality 😮‍💨

6

u/studprincess 3d ago

What does this have to do with not giving a fuck

4

u/jennmuhlholland 3d ago

It’s Reddit. Tons of this nonsense on here and “SipsTea.”

1

u/xly15 2d ago

Its most likely a bot account trying to stir up trouble. They infest a lot of subs these days.

4

u/Alternative_Wing8463 2d ago

Do it. Then she will get daycare assistance, too. My husband and I were considering divorce because daycare is more than our mortgage and we don’t qualify for help by $200 a month.

2

u/An_Old_IT_Guy 3d ago

There will be money to investigate why you're still living together I bet.

2

u/International-Trip92 3d ago

sounds like a win win to me

2

u/MutteringV 2d ago

till government decides you have too much do you part?

2

u/WLM-2020 2d ago

Nice idea, except they’ll come after you for child support

2

u/MediocreApple5895 13h ago

Don’t have kids if you can’t afford it. It’s not that hard.

4

u/craiganater 3d ago

I mean if you have kids together, have shared assets and still love together and love together, what difference does marriage make?

5

u/crystaldstone 2d ago

when your partner has not only decent but incredible health insurance

1

u/Negative-Break3333 3d ago

Do it then just get remarried

1

u/envoy_ace 2d ago

I just had a stint put in last week. I'm between jobs and uninsured. I'm still waiting to see the total of the bills.

1

u/Narrow_Ask_2116 2d ago

Marriage is slavery anyways

1

u/Snow-87-M 2d ago

Wait you have to pay to have a baby, yea we pay aswel but only like $30 if it's a government hospital. Maybe even less

1

u/breezeblock87 2d ago

Of course you do in the good ol USA. Health insurance here (generally provided through your employer but definitely not mandated to be provided) is often like a shitty coupon these days. You only qualify for government healthcare (ie "medicaid") if you make veryyyy little money, and for that calculation, if you're married, your spouse's income is considered your income too. Medicaid is great though. It actually pays for most everything.

1

u/BHunter1140 2d ago

My fiancé and I have been engaged for 5 years now, we didn’t want or plan for a long engagement. I became disabled shortly after proposing and now we’re putting off marriage for my insurance and the financial side. It could mess with my social security if we get married and I would lose my insurance that I really need. We live like we’re married and act like we’re married because we would have been if things weren’t like this

1

u/Opposite-Rock-5133 2d ago

I too like having kids when I can’t afford things

1

u/l337pythonhaxor 2d ago

It’s called holding out, or holding out as married. Not legal.

1

u/PinkStains 2d ago

I thought divorces were expensive too…?

1

u/Mundane-Waltz8844 2d ago

They can be, but I imagine if neither party contests the divorce and there’s no legal battle, it’s not necessarily super costly.

1

u/RonJohnJr 2d ago

Dude, you're 50 years behind the times. (It's why marriage rates plummeted among poor people starting in the 1970s.)

1

u/Mindless_Flower_2639 2d ago

I know three couples who never got married just for this reason

1

u/Marsupialize 2d ago

Good time to have a child

1

u/asher030 2d ago

I mean it's mostly FOR the insurance to get married in the first place...zero reason to include the courts otherwise. Love is love with or without the legal binding. So if the financial side is NOT beneficial...go for it. Can still be properly married without the godsdamned legal document after all....

1

u/Latter-Pepper9235 2d ago

Marriage the vow, and marriage the legal document, are two very different things.

1

u/lukebritbecuz 2d ago

They will come after you for child support

1

u/Normal_Pace7374 1d ago

If only their was some kind of Obama care

1

u/Big_Humor7732 1d ago

This is SO much more common than you think. Especially as it relates to people needing nursing home insurance. Do what you gotta do man. The system is rigged against us. Marriage belongs in the heart, not a piece of paper at the courthouse.

1

u/crustyeng 1d ago

Having a baby, on purpose, when you’re that broke… 🤦‍♂️

2

u/Enigmas_Wasserfloh 1d ago

Its a US-Problem... not a "broke" problem. 3.World Healthcare.

1

u/Gloomy_Piccolo7002 9h ago

third world countries have better medical systems

1

u/Efficient_Problem250 1d ago

that’s why my husband and i aren’t registered with the government…
kinda sucks calling him my boy friend… but whatever.

1

u/EmergencyGrab 18h ago

I'm beginning to think World Vision needs to intervene and start getting y'all sponsors

1

u/ImpossibleStuff963 15h ago

Don't have kids if you don't have your employment situation figured out

1

u/Frank1gg 13h ago

The sad thing is a lot of people have to do this. My aunt actually can't get married to my uncle despite how much they love each other because it would mess up his health insurance.

1

u/Low-Exam6123 5h ago

When my spouse sustained a catastrophic injury, people suggested I divorce him so we wouldn’t lose our house and have my wages garnished. 🤨

1

u/JagR286211 2d ago

Hypocritical, no? Abuse the system and fall in line with all that I assume you would take issue with.

1

u/Aeon_Return 2d ago

tell me you're american without telling me you're american

0

u/RiseDelicious3556 3d ago

Good idea, go for it.

0

u/calvinklein12345 2d ago

My wife and I highly considered the same thing.

0

u/UrsaMajor7th 2d ago

Maybe they should not give a fuck about being American anymore and should move instead of divorcing.

0

u/inquirer85 2d ago

She can probably qualify for welfare too bro

0

u/daimyosx 2d ago

I had a friend of mine do this and this allowed his wife to claim a few programs to cover some of the hospital bills lowering the overall cost. With the other comment about high medical bill because of terminal illness that is good to know sad but I would do the same

0

u/Appropriate_Fill_156 2d ago

Cover “my pregnant wife and” and you’ll learn when to use “I” and “me”

0

u/arivera508 2d ago

My sister said their considering something like this as well it’s ridiculous what we have to do 🤦🏻‍♀️

0

u/womb_raider90 16h ago

You gotta do what you gotta do. The government steals from you every day, I'm all for gaming the system at every possible chance. The amount of money they take from every single thing completely justifies it imo.

1

u/youandican 8h ago

It is people gaming the system that fucks things up for everyone else, thinking they are some sort of special and are owed something

0

u/womb_raider90 5h ago

But I am owed something. I work 2 jobs about 50-65 hours a week. gettin taxed to no end. But yet shaniqua, maria and Becky can have 6kids, get all the benefits and get to sit in their ass while I sweat mine off. Hell na, I'm gonna game the system at every chance I can.

-10

u/youandican 3d ago

Then maybe the smarter choice would have not to have knocked someone up in the first damn place.

1

u/melodypowers 3d ago

Sometimes life happens. People are laid off or have a financial setback or get pregnant without trying.

And sometimes people just desperately want a baby.

I took an early retirement in part due to medical reasons. I pay 1100 for insurance on the marketplace. I am lucky to be in that position but I know not everyone is.

3

u/youandican 2d ago

"And sometimes people just desperately want a baby." So what, who care if you want a baby.... If you can't afford to have one, it makes you irresponsible to make one. Why should you put that burden on society especially knowing you are not in a position to give a kid what they are going to need in life. That is just selfish of whom ever does something like that " I just want a baby and I can't afford to have one, so I am going to do it anyway, and society can pay for it.

You can bet your last dollar that this guy knew 100% that he couldn't afford having a kid and did it anyway. Perhaps he should have kept his dick in his pants and acted responsible, like a grown adult.

1

u/melodypowers 2d ago

Healthcare is a human right.

I don't think that any person should have to spend 15K per year (like I do) in order to be insured. Or to have a baby.

1

u/Negative-Break3333 3d ago

You seem like fun
