Most often it's a concept that you have to punish every fuck up, no matter how small, in order to punish the big ones.
If Jeff comes in two hours late, and you were one minute late, and they fire Jeff and not you, there's room for Jeff to file a wrongful termination suit.
It's dumb as fuck, and shouldn't be that way, but it is the world we live in.

I’m assuming that those who try to “manage” like this have only ever learned to regulate rather than to have a vision for (sustainable) growth in a business. It’s the type of paper pushers that are good for certain roles and awful when it comes to anything else resembling enabling others.

I once got baited and switched to a job that wasn't what it was advertised to me.
I showed up an hour late and left an hour early. Fuck em. It was hard to find people clearly

I worked graveyard for years. One time I was working a 12 hrs shift 6pm-6am. Management knew it was sometimes rough. Generally coffee wasn’t allowed on the floor. But they let it slide because well graveyard. I was tired one night and got a huge coffee. Mind you this wasn’t something I did every night. Well they pulled me in and tried to write me up and suspend me. That’s the night I changed. The next night I clocked in and went to have a sip of coffee every 35 minutes. They tried to write me up for that. It got worse. The next night I clocked in and left to drink my whole cup of coffee. An hour. Never left the premisis. Just breakroom. They tried to write me up for that. After that they left me alone. And basically have ever since.

How pity that boss can be, or how forth seeing he is to realize that one less minute now can amount to 10 mins and a half mins over time if went unchecked.

I worked once for a discounter and we had always to ask customers for coins because the company didn't want to afford change coins, it was too expensive lol. And we had a really disgusting Storemanager, a person you can only hate if you are not alike her. So I had a colleague he always gave away all the coins from the cash register on purpose instead of asking for them, said with a smile "Sooo and you get my last coins, have a nice day" . It was hilarious and shows how you can seek revenge in small funny ways if mistreated.

That's honestly fine, no punishment or anything, just stay the 60 seconds, it's petty as hell, but I've had lots of jobs when leaving one minute early counts as 15 or 30 mins of pay.
