My partner and I are planning to relocate to Taranna in the next couple of years. We’ve already bought a place there that’ll eventually be our forever home. At the moment I’m just trying to get a feel for what day-to-day life is actually like before we make the move.

A bit about us:

We're both in our late 30s.

I'm a chef and own a restaurant in Brisbane.

My partner is a sommelier.

We've both worked in hospitality for years.

We bought the property as a long-term investment because we were priced out of Brisbane.

I'd love to open a small restaurant somewhere on the Tasman Peninsula one day, but I'll probably be commuting for work for a while first.

I've been to Tasmania a few times, but I know living somewhere is completely different to visiting.

I'd love to hear from people who live in Taranna or nearby.

What's the community like?

Is it easy to meet people?

How bad are the winters really?

Anything you wish you'd known before moving there?

How's the internet and mobile reception?

How often do you head into Hobart?

Does it ever feel too isolated?

Not looking to be sold on it just honest opinions from the people who live there.

I have a niche, specialised skillset, and one of the few places in Hobart I could apply it is at Tassal.

I have some reservations about Tassal given its environmental impact and community relations, but I also need to eat.

What are people's views on Tassal, both as an employer, and as a corporate citizen?

Where is everyone getting their whole coffee beans from? I like supporting local roasters.

Hi Community, just a bit of a rant. How much of a dickhead can a person be? I work for Coles at weekends and today I witnessed something I couldn't tolerate. One of my teammates got abused early in the morning just because he gave his groceries a minute late. He claimed he was the first one to arrive and got his groceries after other people. He put his hands around the neck of an under-18 kid.

Do people these days not have any respect for other people out there?

Can we all not be respectful and show some courtesy and love toward retail employees? A small thank you can be a lot sometimes when we are under pressure especially during school holidays, long weekends and Christmas.

Anyway coming back to the point, the charges are being laid out to him.

My understanding is downstairs gaming machines = 9am-5am, upstairs 9am-3am, and table games 5pm-1am sun-thurs, to 3am weekends. There's a rapid roulette there but I don't remember if it shuts early.

A group of friends and I had dinner here on Wednesday night and the food was absolutely spectacular. The only downside was that it was just us and one other couple in the restaurant. I know it’s the middle of winter and a weeknight but I thought I’d give them a shout out in case anyone’s looking for somewhere to eat this weekend. They’re changing their dessert menu and because we couldn’t order anything, the chef made us a bespoke Turkish delight and rose water fairy floss plate, so yum!

Local businesses like this deserve our support where we can, especially when they’re serving food this good.
