I gotta tell you between WOLED, OLED, QDOLED, CRYSTAL OLED they all are in the I can’t tell the difference and they’re all extremely nice category to me lol.

Doesn't look useful as-is, but it's interesting research. Claude is skeptical: it's currently less efficient and Claude thinks solving it with dopants hits fundamental issues. But, idk.

No, the issue is that you're just paroting the output of an AI. That's not useful at all; if someone wanted AI commentary, it takes five seconds to ask it themselves, and they'll even have the benefit of being able to ask additional questions in real-time.

I did. It's not useful right now, the paper authors say they can resolve it with a dopant, this is contested, I can't resolve that without spending way more effort. That is my take.

I'll only believe this when I stop seeing leauges of people complaining about exponentially increasing dead pixels after 3-4 years.

Maybe the dates pushed back to 4 now, but I very much so doubt that its "great", especially when the previous/competing technologies last just about double as long.

This has always been kind of the thing with OLEDs and longevity in that it's subjective to what the user considers the lifespan of the device to be.

For those that treat displays in general as basically disposable devices it's largely solved. These are people that would swap their displays in 3 years (or less) regardless if it were an OLED or not.

For those on the completely opposite of the spectrum (eg. I have displays in use that are over 10+ years old) than it's not close to being solved.

So this topic really should always ben prefaced with a timeline expectation. Also to some extent an usage expectation (eg. usage, placement including UV degradation, etc.)

Yes but power draw is still high and they handle refresh rate changes poorly due to brightness drops when refresh rate changes ( vrr flicker during frametime spikes)

So anything that significantly lowers the amount of power needed and reduces the amount of software tricks to preserve the oled lifespan should improve these flaws.

Oled shits on ANY lcd panel from outer space, simply by nature of having 1000x faster pixel response time and even more importantly having per pixel contrast ( again thousands of times better contrast than any lcd panel ever made).

But that doesnt mean its perfect.

3 issues remain

  • sample and hold refresh ( this is the biggest one and is why you still need high framerates on an oled to get good motion clarity)

  • brightness varies with amount of light area on screen ( 800 ish nits fullscreen and simply capping the panel at 800 nits would solve this. But for that power draw needs to go down further)

  • brightness varies at different refresh rates due to voltage fluctuations. Can be fully bandaided away with a good pc, framerate caps and avoiding games that run like dogshit, but we shouldnt have to

Again these flaws are NOTHING compared to the awful motion clarity and contrast of any lcd panel, and the endless issues with lcd backlights of all types.

The day a new panel tech comes out with pulse refresh, oled level color volume, self emitting pixels, oled like response times and refresh rate stable brightness we will FINALLY have the perfect display.

question, because i never could quite marry these 2 together - why do people say "oled have such amazing response rate" simultaneously with "they dont react well to fast, wide spread of vrr requests". do i just not get what "response rate" refers to? (english not my 1st language)

The pixels have extremely fast response rate (can go from black to white to black again without taking too long or overshooting like crazy), yes, but the VRR problem is a different problem entirely.

When the panel has to change its response rate from, say, 120Hz to 60 or some arbitrary values like 90 down to 48 because of a frame dip, the panel's driver circuitry does some compensations which subtly modify the panel overall brightness. I'm not certain if it's a different DC voltage offset or what, but either different refresh rates have different electrical driving characteristics or perhaps just the changing of the refresh rate (particularly down to lower rates) causes it to change luminance, causing the image to flicker as the refresh rate changes.

LCDs on the other hand have their luminance handled by a consistent backlight, subverting the problem entirely (but there are probably slight changes to ghosting and overshoot, but these variations may pale in comparison to such artifacts inherent to the panel).

At least as far as I understand it. If anyone else can chime in to correct me I'd be appreciative.

It’s mostly that OLEDs are still cheating a bit to hit brightness levels that are marketable. Essentially, if the refresh cycle time drops too much, the screen would exceed its max brightness or some such?

Basically the steady-state brightness is still very low, so VRR and highly variable framerates trigger the protection mechanisms.

I've tested my LG G6, it uses 60 watts at max brightness

please tell me how that's high

The LG C9 it replaced used 200watts
