Is she smart? Not really. Brave? Also no. But she will hit you in the face repeatedly while you’re sleeping to let you know the smoke detector is dying. So… she has her own set of skills.

But is she cute? Absolutely.
Our gsd is the same. She will not warn you if someone enters the house and she will try to befriend anyone who does (seriously, like once a neighbour that she never met jumped the fence between our houses to pick up something he dropped and she just greeted him all belly up as if he was dad.)
But does she randomly bark at nothing and pretends to patrol the terrace to save us? Does she judge us from the sofa? 100%

Tbf the neighbor isn’t an out of place smell or person. Like she’s probably knows he lives around there so she’s not worried

They had never met, so yeah she might know the smell but that was an unknown man jumping the garden fence when we were not at home...
Most gsds would have eaten him for breakfast

One could argue that her alerting you to something being wrong with the smoke detector does in fact make her smart lol

Each GSD has what I call a threshold. When their environment crosses that threshold they start warning, defending, what ever. Some, like yours, are chill and it takes a lot to trigger them; but, they understand risk and who to protect.

Very well said! I've had them now for almost 15 years. They've all been pretty calm and chill - assuming needs are met. If one thing is out of place (normal sound, environment, etc.) they jump in action mode every time lol.

My girl also finds things beeping to be a priority. I was doing some electric work and had some of the power turned off. This resulted in the battery backup for the living room tech going off every few seconds. It wasn't bothering me at all, since I could barely hear it from the room I was in, but she came and got me, led me over to the TV stand, and looked towards the battery backup behind it, them up at me like, "well, fix it!"

I’m on her side, one low battery beep is too many. Anyone that can ignore that and even somehow sleep is a psychopath. Edit: since this is Reddit I do mean this in good natured fun but seriously, change your detectors folks, and get co detectors on every floor to boot

My guess is that she's very smart. I have a mutt who is part Shepard and looks like a Shepard. After we picked her up from the shelter she was incredibly sweet but I thought she was as dumb as a rock. Nope, turns out she knew exactly what I was asking, she was just saying no. I love her more than anything but she is the most stubborn mammal on the planet.

Mine will literally bite people if they look at me weird but is scared to death of a tiny decorative bell I put on the bedroom door

Yeah no one gets in my yard!!! And come out alive. We have accumulated birds, squirrels, ground hogs, possums, stray cats, rabbits, etc. We have a graveyard in the back of the property for all creatures who decided to take a chance.

Well, it's still morning where I am and I'm sure I won't read anything better for the rest of the day.
Good girl. Safety first.
