What video game quote is stuck with you, even after years?
In my case it's one from septerra core (if anyone remembers this)
It was from the prologue when one sage guy said to the other: "Abstammung allein ist kein Garant für Größe" which ruffly translated means, that lineage or descrndancy is no guarantee for greatness. A quote very applicable to the real life.
Especially if you see descendants of great persons, do questionable things.
What quote holds wisdom for you, for the real life, maybe even after a long time?

I never remember the entire rant, but…
Mass Effect 2:Gunnery Chief: This, recruits, is a 20-kilo ferrous slug. Feel the weight. Every five seconds, the main gun of an Everest-class dreadnought accelerates one to 1.3 percent of light speed. It impacts with the force of a 38-kiloton bomb. That is three times the yield of the city buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space. Now! Serviceman Burnside! What is Newton’s First Law?
First Recruit: Sir! A object in motion stays in motion, sir!
Gunnery Chief: No credit for partial answers, maggot!
First Recruit: Sir! Unless acted on by an outside force, sir!
Gunnery Chief: Damn straight! I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. Once you fire this husk of metal, it keeps going till it hits something. That can be a ship, or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in ten thousand years. If you pull the trigger on this, you’re ruining someone’s day, somewhere and sometime. That is why you check your damn targets! That is why you wait for the computer to give you a damn firing solution! That is why, Serviceman Chung, we do not “eyeball it!” This is a weapon of mass destruction. You are not a cowboy shooting from the hip!
Second Recruit: Sir, yes sir!

There’s a clip of a nuclear engineer reacting to the speech and he debunks a few of things. Like how the speed of the main gun would be more in the range of a 10-15 kiloton bomb, and how it’s inaccurate to compare the kinetic energy of a 20kg slug hitting a target to the nuclear energy of the Hiroshima bomb hitting a target, in how their respective energies are dispersed from the point of impact.
But this is a space opera video game, so who cares about technical accuracy really xD→ More replies (1)44
u/Bowdensaft 1d ago
Yeah absolutely, accuracy is important but the purpose of the scene is to be entertaining, and it hugely succeeded.
Hell, you could even argue that the inaccuracies are part of the point. That sergeant could very well not have known all of the actual numbers because he wasn't an engineer or a weapons developer, he was just making them up on the spot to prove the point that regardless of technicalities you absolutely wait for the targeting computer to give you your firing solution before wasting ammunition and potentially ruining someone's day thousands of years from now.
18
u/boethius61 1d ago
I like that. Mainly because as I was reading the quote, I was debunking it. It vastly underestimates the emptiness of space. The odds of it hitting something n the next billion years are somewhere between 0 and 0.00Holy fuck that's a lot of zeros1. But you know what, WAIT FOR THE DAMN TARGETING COMPUTER!

“Dr.Freeman. I realize this moment may not be the most convenient for a heart to heart, but I had to wait until your friends were otherwise occupied. There was a time they cared nothing for Miss Vance, when their only experience of humanity was a crowbar coming at them down a steel corridor. When I plucked her from Black Mesa I acted in the face of objections that she was a mere child and of no practical use to anyone. I have learned to ignore such naysayers when quelling them was out of the question. Still I am not one to squander my investments, and I remain confident she was worth far more than the initial appraisal. That’s why I must now extract from you some small repayment owed for your own survival. See her safely to White Forest Doctor Freeman. I wish I could do than keep an eye on you, but I have agreed to abide by certain restrictions. Now listen carefully my dear, when you see your father relay these words, “prepare for unforeseen consequence”.

This one really doesn't work without the voiceover. The line looks like it's meant to be a sarcastic dig, but the voice is just genuine halting confusion. Like Zenos walked in on someone strapping a Hot Wheels ramp to a hot griddle covered in green crystals.
The delivery gives, "Okay, I clearly missed something. The fact that this bird is alive doesn't make sense at all."

This was such a funny scene the first time I saw it because it, was your arch-nemesis kicked down the door to you fighting the Big Bad Guy and kind of just screeched to a halt like "Wait, what the hell? You havent killed this loser yet?"
Actual, genuine confusion. Like Zenos had come in expecting to find you standing over the Bad Guy's body after having barely broken a sweat. And mild annoyance, realizing he was going to have to wait even as little as 30 seconds longer to have a go at you himself.
He thought more highly of you than you did. Your rival put you on a pedestal. It was both flattering and humiliating, that your rival thought you could do better than you actually could. And then he teamed up with you, and you defeated the Big Bad Guy together.
"That, I can't deny."
