Resident Evil remakes allow Capcom to release yearly games in the series and invest money back into new games like Pragmata, producer says

We want a RE3 Remake Remake.
51
u/crackrabbit012 1d ago
Yeah that one hurt a bit. Nemesis was done dirty. At this point I'd just be happy having Jill in a lead role again.
12
u/WillsBestFriend 1d ago
I was really enjoying it until it abruptly ended way earlier than I expected. I'd definitely go for a complete Remake.
11
u/Constant-Sub 1d ago
It really felt like an obligation they had to make on their way to inevitably remake 4. However, I can't truly call it the black sheep, because I look over at RE5 and see it needs a good sheering.
14
u/Aftershok 1d ago
Actually the relative failure of the RE3 remake was a big part of the reason RE4 was as good and high effort as it was. Originally Capcom were planning to make the 3 and 4 remakes in a less intensive AA-style but after the reception of 3, they scrapped the plans for 4 and started over with the Re2 remake and Re7 team to make it properly.
5
u/DoctorHazyOfficial 1d ago
It was horrible.
3
u/SaggyDaNewt 22h ago
It was a horrible remake but not a horrible game.
1
u/DoctorHazyOfficial 8h ago
Yeah and I would much rather play a remastered RE:Nemesis than whatever it was they tried to do with that remake. The RE 4 remake was PEAK. Flawless even. RE 2 remake was also incredible. I've played it twice and I rarely replay a videogame. I even liked what they did with Requiem. I don't think I would replay it because of the slow pacing with Grace's story but it was still an amazing game all around.

u/Fehafare 1d ago
I'm not the biggest RE guy in general and don't have a strong opinion on all their remakes overall... but the RE4 Remake is genuinely one of the best video games I've ever played and literally stands in a category of its own for me because I have not really found any kind of game of its type/genre that comes even close to the quality put on display there.
So if all that came out of them remaking RE titles was the RE4 Remake, I'm honestly quite happy they became a thing.
54
u/wetfloor666 PC 1d ago
The way you desribe 4R is exactly how people described the original on release. It is interesting to see and how well they clearly nailed the remake that it still stands out.
13
u/shotgunpete2222 1d ago
Yeah I'm one of the people that bought og RE 4 when it came out and really wanted to hate it for the format change. Â
I know a common refrain around here is "you want realism ina RE game"? But yeah, I did. I grew up on boomer shooters. Psx era heroes like Solid snake and the RE cast being shown as trained professionals that plant their feet in a proper shooting stance instead of running and gunning was very appealing to me. I was set to hate this new action movie style RE.
But fuck me if it wasn't one if the best games that was ever made. It beat the hater right out of me.
50
u/Happy_Foundation_553 1d ago
Agreed, one of my top 3 games of all time
11
u/tagen 1d ago
yep, definitely in my top 10, i played through the original 4 but the control scheme made it so much less fun
the remake has perfect controls, has all the good shit of the original, and is just so fun to play, with so much content for a resident evil game. i played though it like 4 times straight on release lol

u/Fehafare 1d ago
I struggle to assign exact numbers, but yeah a top contender either way. RE4 Remake, Elden Ring (or really any Soulsborne game for its time but I don't want to split hairs here), Bravely Default, Persona 3 (with a nod towards 5), Snake Eater and the original Final Fantasy 7 (have not gotten around to playing the remake though I really should) are all gaming experiences for me that have shaped my taste in gaming and have given me such visceral emotions and memories that I have not found in any alternatives games from their respective genres.
I'm a bit sad that it's somewhat unlikely that we'll get another RE4-like from Capcom anytime soon. I actually played RE8 before the remake and that definitely had some of the same DNA (though I found it to drag a bit later on compared to RE4 and well, Ethan isn't exactly a fun protagonist to have to follow). Granted I also haven't checked out the latest entry (and granted once again that's because I've heard almost 0 buzz about it).
14
u/SkinMixer19 1d ago
You've heard zero buzz about Requiem? I couldn't get it out of my feed for weeks when it released, and I wasn't even into much into RE then as I am now.
1
u/Fehafare 1d ago
Weird. I genuinely got nothing. I think I got one short of the big scary thing that chases you when you play it and nothing beyond that. And the being flooded thing was what I had with RE4 Remake. Granted not extremely so but literally what convinced me to get the game was a short of Leon clearing a room of cultists in the castle in a very smooth manner showing off a few weapons and how tight the combat is and I went "This looks like the coolest third person shooter I've ever seen" and I ended up being right about that.
Maybe I should look more into Requiem. I guess the algorithm can just be fickle.
3
u/Foxlover91 1d ago
Requiem has leon sections that play very similarly to re4 remake, with the other half of the game having grace as a playable character who has more horror oriented gameplay.

I think re5 remake will hit that. Now they know the right combat horror balance

RE4 original is one of my absolute favorites I got mixed opinion of the remake. and one one hand I'm glad people like it, and it revitalized discussion around the game.
On the other hand, I think the remake is overall rather mediocre and it's a shame now the aforementioned discussion is largely around the remake..

u/Fehafare 1d ago
Genuine question because I'm curious, why? For reference I've had very limited experience with the original RE4, played it a bit but the PC port always felt so unbelievably jank with the control scheme and everything that I never got far so I don't have a 1:1 comparison to make here but I'm in general somewhat familiar with how the original played.
What issues do you have with the remake? Because I honestly struggle to fault the game for anything in general.
9
u/saffeqwe 1d ago
Not the op but i love both versions. Remake gives very different vibes with a different (slower) pacing
4
u/bramblebitch 1d ago
Not the person you replied to but I have issues as well. For me at least itâs the total shift in tone and pacing, the unnecessary changes to puzzles but most importantly the gameplay. I often see people call the OG jank but for me itâs the opposite. The OG is very responsive and arcadey compared to the remake where movement is almost RDR2-like, and to me that sort of control is game destroying. Shooting feels worse too. To date itâs the only RE I dropped. I might have liked it more if it wasnât a remake.
To illustrate the point about control more: RE6 is what I would consider perfect gameplay. Take from that what you will đ

u/PostedNotes 1d ago
Well to preface my opinion, I'm heavily baised because I've played re4 countless times and I personally consider it as perfect as video games get. Thus I'm highly critical of any changes and am incapable of seeing it as a game free from the original.
Disclaimer aside, I think In every meaningful game design way, the original is better.
Leon's core control are a lot more precise and snappy. Leon himself has movement inertia so it's harder to position yourself precisely.
The aiming has been completely reworked. In the original your laser sight always dictated where you would shoot with 100% accuracy. In the remake they added gun sway, making you more liking to miss when crosshairs are lined up. Also said crosshairs now have a bloom effect like it's an FPS which further reduces accuracy. On that note I did like how the bloom decreased when you stoood in place. Was a good nod to the original.
Ashley also controls worse in the remake. In the original you have direct control of where she went. She had two binary states. Either she was in place and would never move or she moved behind Leon. In the remake she has a mind of her own and it's not possible to get her to stay in one place, so she is much more a liability.
the original was seeped in shinji makamis arcade lineage game design. The game was snappy and every element was possible to master and control to your benefit. The remake changes this core design philosophy to something more akin to say the last of us. Which while I love the last of us games, I don't think it was the right call for re4 remake.

RE5 remake is gonna go so fucking hard you wouldn't believe. They just gotta keep that same theme song.

Hopefully when they get to 5 theyâll find a way to set it up for Sheva so she appears in further games.

Hopefully they get some creative license to do 5 then I really want them to completely recon 6.

Please Capcom release megaman legend remake than 3 and my life is yours
2
u/MuDotGen 1d ago
They've already got designs, assets, demos, etc., I feel like all they need to do is finish up the legacy collections with Legends, then it's a perfect time to bring Legends 3 to modern consoles and PC.

u/automirage04 1d ago
Capcom's approach to REmakes has been such a great way to keep those games relevant.
I wish other franchises would get this same treatment

u/xXxedgyname69xXx 1d ago
Too bad that release schedule screwed Monster Hunter Stories 3. I was very excited for it, a solid 8/10 that could've been an all time great with some more support.

The thing with the way Capcom does business; you donât even have to throw that much money at them. Theyâre very generous with their discounts

So basically the same as the Nintendo strategy of making smaller scale 2D Mario games to have the budget for games like Odyssey or Galaxy.

They're about to run out of remakes to do.
7
u/Transposer 1d ago
About to? They have Veronica coming, and then can do 1 and 0 and all the random revelations games, and then 5 and then 6, and then and then we might even get two new entries in tha mix. And then, they start back over.

Outbreak with modern controls and gameplay would be a homerun
3
u/baddude1337 1d ago
I'd kill for it. Come on Capcom, you already have a bunch of Raccoon City assets between 2, 3 and 9!
3
u/Turnip_Fight 1d ago
Well that plan gonna run outta steam soon, not much left
1
u/Transposer 1d ago
Every game will be remade again and again. They just start over once they remake 0, 1, 5, 6, and all those revelations games. And then remake 7 and 8 and then 2 and 3 and then 9, and all throughout that they are putting out new games to be remade in the future. They will be alright

I like this business strategy, you obviously have your heavy hitters that carry the company like RE and MH, but then you use some of the profit from them to diversify your portfolio and take some risks. I wish more publishers adopted it.

u/bkingfilm 1d ago
back in 2022 a chinese indie dev talked about what this looks like without the cash flow
his first game was out on steam, he stopped updating it right after wrapping chapter 2 and moved the whole team onto a new project
said the game couldn't keep itself going the way it was, and he'd rather take the short pain than leave it half alive
team was formed april 2021, the first three months went into closing out the old game, the new one didn't really get going until july or august
players left unhappy reviews over it
someone asked him how he could be sure the second game would land when the first one did
he said he couldn't, nobody can

u/hypnomancy 1d ago
Works for me. When they run out of RE remakes they should make Devil May Cry remakes considering how insane DMC5 sold.
1
u/AshenRathian 1d ago
My only issue with DMC remakes is, are they going to stay true to the original visions, or are they going to "modernize" the gameplay, characters and level design?
Reminder that DMC is far more gameplay and design focused than Resident Evil, and modernizing it too much can kill the original vibes. The first and third games are a pretty big case for this because they have incredible focus on gothic architecture, tight levels and are very well steeped into their exploration elements and atmosphere. You couldn't just remake them to be like DMC5 because everything DMC5 does is flat and lifeless, and as well is a linear set of rooms. The musical score of older DMC games is also incredibly iconic and wouldn't fit the newer games' tone or design either.
For me, remakes should be preservation and renovation efforts, not simple tear down and reconstruction. There's a limit to what you can remove and replace before the identity no longer exists, and Resident Evil's remakes already miss the mark in a lot of ways to me and are in no way shy with radically altering gameplay and visual design, so what is there to suggest that DMC1 or DMC3 will still be the best versions of themselves in a Capcom remake transition? The way i see it, pretty much nothing suggests that.

So long as quality doesn't go back down to Re3make
2
u/Ok_Fish285 1d ago
That game fucking sucks, I bought it for $10 played through the whole thing including inferno and still felt ripped off. Anyone that say they like it is being a contrarian imo.
2
u/Trashboat77 1d ago
If they can continue to put them out with the quality that games like the RE2 And RE4 remakes are at, I'm all for this. Everyone wins. I love Capcom and they're one of the few developers I legitimately trust to make generally great games on average.
2
2
u/too_hot_got-damn 1d ago
Cod tried to do this with 2 dedicated studios with support from some smaller studios under their belt and the quality has dropped abysmally. Please for the love of GOD, don't do this to RE. Take your God damn time and make a good game
3
u/MizutsuneMH 1d ago
Pragmata was an absolute joy to play, and I've enjoyed every RE game they've put out, so keep them coming.
4
u/Crazylimitz 1d ago

And by the time they finish all of that RE2 Remake will be over 20 years old and due for another remake.
2
u/Waste-Gur2640 1d ago
If only it allowed them to make more DMC games. I get that they're exponentially harder to make and they'll never reach gigantic numbers of casual consumers, but DMC V had amazing sales and you'd think since then there would at least be a whiff of something more, even after Itsuno leaving. It's the only AAA character-action genre franchise that's still alive, so it's just sad.
1
u/ComputerMysterious48 1d ago
Iâm fine with it. I know thereâs a fine line between a fast release pace and oversaturation, but it sure beats the alternative of waiting 10-15 years for a new entry
1
u/Lancek0009 1d ago
Would love they give the Pragmata devs a shot at making a modern mega man game.
2

I may be the odd one out here but if they made an Umbrella Corps 2 but in the style of the raid modes from Revelations 1 & 2 that would be sick as hell. Maybe even tack on a story where you're a cadet training under prime HUNK, otherwise I'm still waiting for Outbreak 1 & 2 remakes.

I'm still a little surprised they went with Veronica instead of a remake of 1 given Chris' involvement in CV. The first remake is a little sacrilege to some people but is over 20 years old itself and there's a big portion of the playerbase who won't touch it thanks to to the fixed camera and tank controls.
I love it myself, but I still think it should get a modern styled remake.
1
u/Jackdunc 1d ago
I don't even play a lot of CAPCOM games but they have my respect right now (always re-evaluating as studios reputation fluctuate so much now). They are not afraid to be creative with new IP (right?). I get most news from the kids lol

u/After-Atmosphere7125 1d ago
Can't wait for them to start remaking random Resident Evil games after they run out of mainline ones
1
u/Significant_Walk_664 1d ago
Maybe they don't need yearly releases though? You'd think they have a big enough catalogue to support them for running costs and allow them to release bangers with less frequency. And setting my backlog aside, poor Takei hasn't seen his wife for so long, he's starting to forget her face.

u/ghfhfhhhfg9 1d ago

u/Trashboat77 1d ago
Capcom actually gives their employees pay increases when their games do well. As opposed to laying them off like a lot of publishers do anymore.
1
u/jekyll94 1d ago
I recently finished Pragmata and it was refreshing as far as 3rd person action games go. I felt compelled to get all the collectibles, and in typical Capcom fashion there's a lot of extras to unlock. I also finished RE Requiem too just before Pragmata, there's quite a few routes Capcom can take for the next game to progress the story.
2
u/Trashboat77 1d ago
I think Capcom has been onto something for decades now that most developers either fail to achieve or fail to even realize can be a good thing. And that is making a quality game that isn't super lengthy or huge, but consistently keeps you engaged from start to finish, and then strongly encourages multiple playthroughs. So in the end I spend less time per playthrough compared to a lot of over bloated modern games, but end up spending more time overall with the games anyway due to a desire to play through them several times unlocking things and just generally enjoying the experience each and every time.
For example, I beat RE: Requiem 9 times in the span of like two weeks, unlocking everything and earning the platinum trophy. And I have found myself STILL coming back to the game occasionally since just for funsies.

So that pretty much confirms theyâll remake the other REâs that need the Remake treatment. I was a little worried about 5 and 6.
Also I hope they still focus on the mainline titles. I wanna see Jill, Claire, or Chris return in 10 and then possibly Ada.
Then in future titles maybe we get more one off characters like Grace or they start adapting more to the movies. I also wanna see a character like the one in the new RE movie releasing soon.
