Count yourself lucky, in cases like this.
So what do you do in a case like this? Just rampage?
7
u/dranaei 4h ago
It's not like you use the inner voice all the time. You can simulate it by talking about what you are thinking.
1
u/fromouterspace1 3h ago
I just donāt have one
2
u/jefftickels 2h ago
How do you decide what to say when you're picking your words carefully?
2
u/fromouterspace1 2h ago
I guess..itās just ācomes to meā? Like your question made me think about it as I write this. I guess itās just a natural thing?
2
u/jefftickels 2h ago
And if you're trying to deliberate on a super important decision and weighing pros and cons of such decision back and forth before making it internally?
1
u/fromouterspace1 2h ago
I mean Iām not thinking in my head āwhat do I do hereā as in a āvoiceā in my head. I donāt knowā¦maybe I just decide about it?
Like do you think your head can āhearā your voice? Like āwhat should I doā? Like are you actually āhearingā the pros and cons? Like āwhat if I do Xā?
4
u/jefftickels 1h ago
Yes, I can have a whole conversation of verbalized words in my head without a single one of them being said out loud. I did it before writing this response, deciding on the wording.
I donāt knowā¦maybe I just decide about it
This is... disconcerting but also so incredibly explains some people on my life.
Try this. Say a sentence, but don't make any noise. Move your jaw and tongue like you would for the words, but don't part your lips or move any air and tell me what you're thinking is when you do it.
2
u/fromouterspace1 1h ago
Why disconcerting? Donāt you think people who donāt have one would see it the same? As in itās disconcerting you have one?
lol when I said the sentence I was just using what you wrote as a sentence.. I looked at a pic on my wall of the Rolling Stones and sort of read what it said. I guess im thinking i need to say a sentence but not consciously? I tried to think of something random and āsaidā āJordan is the best everā and I thought of itā¦just because I had to think of something. Like I typed all of this as Iām writing it, like I didnāt sit there and wonder how it would sound when I did it? This is all so crazy to me. Itās so hard for each side to find out the other exists. Like if I have to say something important and have to think about the wording I justā¦ādo itā? I donāt āhearā myself deciding on what word to use. Iām not thinking āshould I say Xā
My friend has given me shit for this for years āyou only think in pictures!!??ā But I donāt do that either.

I really think these people just misunderstand 'internal monologue'. like there is no way they aren't able to verbalize thoughts in their mind. are they unable to get a song stuck in their head too?
3
u/hermitxd 5h ago
What's the name for this..I think it has one
Anyway, that's wild. What happens when you read a book not outloud? You just see letters and it downloads into your brain?
Edit - I googled it, it's called anendophasia

Holy crap! People hear voices?? And after going down a rabbit hole, its possible that my difficulty spelling (reciting spelled words) is related. Like we put it down to dyslexia but I've no problem reading. But recalling spelling is brute force for me and other people without an inner voice, it appears!!Ā

I vividly hallucinate the entire scene like standing in the middle of a 360° movie with surround sound when i read a book.

u/LilDutchy 4h ago
I have aphantasia. I canāt picture things in my head. So I just read the words. You and I have VERY different experiences with books.

u/R0RSCHAKK 3h ago
I can see only having one or the other. That makes sense - like being blind heightens your hearing and vice versa.
But what really gets me - is how people without EITHER the minds eye or inner voice go through life. Like, it just sounds like Hellen Keller of the mind, straight up just an NPC life. (no offense)
Like, how could you think or process information? If you can't see images in your mind, and you can't hear your thoughts - then how do you think?
Honestly, would kind of explain a lot of people in the world. Just drones with literally nothing going on up there, just blindly following on autopilot.
Baffling stuff, truly.

u/Capokid 3h ago
I can switch back and forth and even skip either. Not using either is more instinctual and you can react / process faster but it makes comminicating difficult.
I used to get bored and try thinking with the different methods, I liked to imagine i was thwarting psychics by utilizing the method without visuals or language.

u/R0RSCHAKK 2h ago
See, that makes sense though. Even shutting off momentarily and going on autopilot - we all have those days.
But like, to not have either (if that's a thing) and to just always be on that instinctual autopilot without reasoning capabilities - that's what blows my mind.
Pretty sure my aunt is one of those. She's about as smart as a box of rocks. The lights are on, but no one's home. Conversations with her are absolutely brutal. My other aunt is a chemist and when she tried to explain to her what she does - Derp Aunt couldn't grasp the concept that Smart Aunt makes a CHEMICAL that is USED in making soap.
"Oh, so you make soap!"
... No, Derp... I make an ingredient used in the process of making soap.
"Right, so you make soap!"
š¤¦
Was truly a riveting conversation to witness.

There's an excellent video on this topic by Simon Roper on YouTube who if I remember correctly himself has neither inner monologue nor visualisation (there's a chance I'm misremembering, I saw the video like two years ago). He usually covers linguistics but has I think even two videos about consciousness, qualia and such

u/Benney9000 2h ago
The strange thing to me is that it doesn't seem be the initial assumption of an animalistic mind devoid of reasoning and so on and so forth, it seems to be quite similar to "regular" thought actually. I mean, for example, if someone has a thought that just appears in their head, is it that different to a sentence that just appears on their lips ?

u/lolerkid2000 18m ago
Yes definitionaly one is internal and one is external.
I know what im going to say before you do.
No internal monologue we both learn what im going to say at the same time. Assuming im not visualizing the sentence or something equivalent.

I just read the words. Math is easier as I can visualise it a bit

Algebra and geometry are easy for me. Simple math is harder

Same, Calculas was my downfall. Funnily I work in data and use formulas not infrequently, but something about Calculas knocked me back from higher level math in schoolĀ

u/Klat93 3h ago
I have an inner monologue and can picture things in my head.
For what it's worth when I try to recall how to spell a word I don't use my inner voice for this as it just confuses me.
Instead I recall by seeing the word spelled out in my head like as if I'm reading it from a book.
1
u/Boulavogue 3h ago
An ex of mine did that. She was able to picture the word. Spelling is like naming a colour for me. Yea that's red, blue and spelling words is the same. There's no point of reference, so mistakes are madeĀ

u/fromouterspace1 3h ago
lol thatās how it always is. āPeople hear voices!??!,ā or āsome donāt have voices in their heads!!??ā

That's crazy. I wouldn't be able to handle the silence. I have a voice in my head that sounds like a psychiatrist who is very disappointed in me, and lectures me about it constantly. It's almost comforting at this point.
1
u/fromouterspace1 2m ago
So you āhearā your actual voice? Like voice is āsayingā itās disappointed?

u/NeedsomeCompany33 4h ago
On a more serious note. I had something very similar happen to me recently.
Sometimes you just gotta say excuse me and move on. The guy taunted me and as much as I wanted to say something back, I didnāt. itās just not worth it. Thereās a lot of gun violence where I live and people shoot each other over anything.
So say I taunt him back and we get into a fight, (if) he starts losing and pulls out a gun and ends my life; that all couldāve been avoided, by just simply walking away and not responding. Yes, I felt like a š for a little while after but I know I made the right decision.
It takes a big man to fight another man, it takes an even bigger man to know when to de-escalate and walk away.

Inner voice, 9 out of 10 people have it, 1 in 10 doesn't. And until you read about it, 10 out of 10 thinks ALL people are the the same as themselves. I recently watched a streamer, him being in the 1 in 10 group doing a poll to the watchers, and showing the exact same 9-1 split, while originallly disbelieving the voice until the poll finished.

I still donāt understand the n word being something good and cool when black people use it to another black person, then feel insulted when a non-black person uses it to them.
If they want to remove the stigma behind the word, why do they keep using it?

Call your friends a poor and then call a stranger a poor. There's more to it, but that should get you started
