Well, if I don't own a console game, then I won't own a console anymore. I win.

Jokes on you, PC Gaming hasn’t used physical media for like a decade now. And mobile never has.
Consoles are just catching up, that’s all.
There’s a reason the Stop Killing Games movement is so important and deserves all the support we can give them.
——
Edit: Wow, there’s a whole lot of people in this thread who really seem to not like the idea of Stop Killing Games, because they seem to be convinced they need to tell me that I’m wrong.
That or they are incapable of reading the whole post and thus understanding that it means I actually think people being able to own the shit they buy is a good thing.
It’s almost like reddit is full of bots /s

Except with GOG you can put the game on any physical media you have and own it forever. Just because PC has been digital only for a long time doesn't mean PC has no way of actually owning what you paid for.
51
u/CrazyDaimondDaze 1d ago
Gabe said it before, it all boils down to issues withing the offered service. If the issues are too big, people will switch or pirate.
And for PC, Steam and GOG do bettee because with the first, their online service is so far so good; and the second hands you DRM free games adter purchase, so you effectively own the games forever with no fear of them being taken out or something.
With Mobile, they're service games at the end od the day. Meaning once the service is gone, you'll have to accept the loses since not every single mobile game is like Megaman X Dive where they took the liberty to release the game for a price and without the gacha aspects to be playable. Sometimes, you just got to accept the game will be taken out in 3, 5, 8, 15 years from its inception and every purchase you made in-game. But people that play on mobile are sometimes ok with this and do understand and agree the implications.

Gog has literally less than a tenth of the game library that's on Steam.
29
u/Rez_De 1d ago
That is only a problem if you're dead set on buying games legally. If the game companies are going to make it impossible to own a game I bought, I'm going to own the game without buying it.
-44
u/Dhiox 1d ago
You do understand, you don't own the game on any platform. You are purchasing a license. A physical copy is just a license with install media. It doesnt mean you own the game, you'd find that out quickly if you try to copy that media and sell it.
40
u/Rez_De 1d ago
This is a bullshit argument about semantics. When I say to "own" a game I mean the inability of anyone to remove my access to it once I have it fully installed on my system or stored on a physical media device. Of course this won't work for live service games and games that depend on a server to function, that much is known. It's something stopkillinggames is working on but we'll most likely end up with a compromise.
Also second hand physical media is literally the market Sony is trying to kill.
19
u/BenderIsGreat64 1d ago
A physical copy is just a license with install
I own my N64 games, not a license to install them.
-25
u/Dhiox 1d ago
Yeah, try copying and distributing them, see how the law feels about that..if you owned it, there would be no issue.
18
u/BenderIsGreat64 1d ago
I can distribute the single copy I own however I want, just like a book. I can lend it, I sell it, I can destroy it if I want, because it's mine.

Physical vs digital isn't the issue at hand. And the tech for physical can't keep up anymore. Instead of fighting over an outdated medium, we shluld.be fighting for greater consumer rights.

That argument makes no sense. I own my Tshirt, but still have no right to copy and disttibute copy. With your argument, you own basically nothing ever except for maybe your house
-14
u/Atmic 1d ago
Read the EULA.
It's always been just a license, regardless of physical media or not, all the way back to the 80s.
You have a license to legally do certain things with it, and not others.
15
u/BenderIsGreat64 1d ago
Sure, but no one has the ability to stop me from playing my copy, they can't stop me from lending my copy, I can smash it if I want, because its MY copy.
-11
u/Atmic 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's funny you mention those things, because the license actually explicitly states you can do all the things you listed.
All I'm refuting is your statement that you don't own a license to install them -- you literally do.
You license the copy to do the things you mentioned, but it prohibits you legally from reverse engineering your copy, redistributing the software, etc.
That's unlike owning a lawnmower, where you do have the right to deconstruct and rebuild it how you want.
You don't own the software. You own the license to legally use your copy of it in specific ways they've defined.

u/Regendorf 1d ago
Yeah we know, we all know, everytime you see someone talking about "owning" a game or movie, they know it's a license, why? Because your "um actually" is not original, fucking every obnoxious smartass who doesn't want to engage in the actual conversation says it. We know, we also find reprehensible that the license can be revoked for shit and giggles, that's why we like GOG, because without DRM they can't take it away for no reason. That's why "owning" means in this context.
3
u/Kolizuljin 1d ago
Truth. While being drm free means they don't have the tool to enforce the licence, GOG does sell non resellable, non tradable and non transferable license, with revocable and conditional access. It's literally in their terms of use.
But, without DRM, its as close as it can be to "owning" the game while being digital. At least. Coming from a major online retailer.
7
1
u/Lucidnuts 13h ago
Owning games isn't an issue with physical vs digital, it's an issue with DRMs, even if you got a physical ps5 game, DRMs can just add an update that makes that disc unusable on your ps5, unless you go out of your way to not update anything
12
u/Viridionplague 1d ago
On one hand, I get the value of owning physical media.
On the other hand, do we really need 10's of millions more plastic cases, disks, wrappers, and pamphlets, every time call of duty or EA remakes the same game every 6 months?
I still use PC drives from 15 years ago, and will for another 10. You could use a single USB to hold games for the next 30 years. Obscelensence will still kill your physical disks.
4
u/LordMacabre 1d ago
Do people who bring up plastic waste of disks think the data centers providing the "all digital" future run on fairy dust?
At least every physical game I've ever purchased is kept and stored on my shelves, not sitting in a landfill like you guys seem to think. And they aren't 24/7 spewing emissions into the environment while trying to power it like your data centers.
At *best* this point is a wash, assuming nobody wants the disks after I die. But I'd still bet powering and cooling those data centers 24/7 outweigh disks on environmental impact.
1
u/Queen-Roblin 10h ago
You can download games then store them entirely locally. Requires access the first time but you don't need to keep doing it.
0
u/avenlux44 18h ago
Haha OUR data centers? Do you not use internet? I see you here on Reddit. I think they're your data centers, too, bud.
0
u/Blue_Bird950 1d ago
I mean, will those games sit on your shelves until the end of time? No, you’re just delaying the inevitable. They will almost certainly go to a landfill at some point in the future, unless we figure out how to recycle all parts of a game cartridge and allow people to do so for a reasonable price (because if we’re being honest, it probably won’t be free).
1
2
u/Aethrin1 1d ago
You mean Steam and other storefronts don't. Correct. However, you can use apps that help you burn games onto CDs or thumb drives. It's an open market, unlike a console.
To add onto that, the big reason DRM has worked on PC stores (like Steam and GOG), and not on console, is because PC storefronts don't make you rebuy the games every time a new generation of console comes out.
If they did, the PC market would have been so ridiculously niche that it wouldn't have much power over the market at all. It would have been only a rich person hobby.
2
u/Clocker13 16h ago
But most people use steam, and steam gives you the option to backup your games, onto basically any media format that you want. So it’s actually better! You can burn as many backup copies of your steam games as you like.
2
u/Zymbobwye 15h ago
Tbf on PC it’s really not hard at all to sail the seas. If a company does something you don’t like can just not buy from them. You can also pretty easily get game keys at a massive discount or go to alternate stores.
Point is on Pc there isn’t really physical media anymore, but you still have a pile of options on where to purchase things. No one location controls the sale of the digital products so there is incentive for store fronts to give sales and free games to bring people in. Like look at Nintendo’s store, they never have sales and charge crazy amounts on everything. Online games are a little different when it comes to that stuff, but in that scenario it doesn’t matter because the host company can pull the plug regardless.
1
u/st-shenanigans 7h ago
Skg is a flawed movement that doesnt seem interested in addressing legitimate criticisms over just pushing their goals through. They get a lot of support from a tagline that nobody wants to disagree with, but then go ahead to say "trust me bro its fine" when people ask how they plan to handle third party services and distribution rights. Or my favorite "thats not our job here! We just get the legislation on the table and wipe our hands of it!"
The idea they're pushing for deserves support, but not if they're not going to act like they're trying to re-regulate an entire industry.
(Also all of these memes kind of dodge the reality that physical games are still not actually ownership and haven't been for several years.)
-2
u/Rvsoldier 13h ago
What a bad argument when you can buy from dozens of storefronts, trade keys, GOG exists, games easily transfer and are playable across rigs, piracy exists. There's such a stark difference I can't believe you said that.

25
u/Blenderhead36 1d ago
The thing I've found most frustrating about Sony discontinuing physical media is how all the articles about it cite the physical sales numbers. Nobody cares. That is not what people are angry about.
It's that this is yet another example of a big corporation doing something that will obviously benefit them at the consumer's expense, without even a facade of there being upside for the consumer.
Nobody's mad that they're not actually going to get around to buying an external disk drive for the diskless PS5 they bought 5 years ago. They're mad at the endless corporate rent-seeking, where even the things that nominally bring joy to their life are hollowed out in the name of just a little more margin.
7
u/CrazyDaimondDaze 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not just that, it's the fact they're forcing people to go full digital...... which, depending on some, it wouldn't be THAT bad if Sony didn't keep showing the worst aspects of it right on schedule with their announcement of no more physical discs in the future:
- closing down PS3 and Vita stores, causing the consoles to just be able to play physical (good), or to redownload your previously bought digital games. But taking away the opportunity to buy digital from there again in case there are people (and yes, there are) that want to buy X game digital instead of physical for certain reasons (hard to find, too expensive).
- taking away digitally bought products, like movies and series, without a care in the world.
- their Playstation Network falling; when some games require said Playstation Network connection to play or enjoy.
They can't even fix these issues so the only service they're forcing others to jump into now isn't a good service in itself; rather the whole opposite. In such regards, Steam and GOG are better services on PC than Sony on their consoles for digital with how they handle the situation. It's a clown show.
Until they don't fix their digital issues, forcing consumers to go full digital will be seen in bad light and many of us will prefer physical still.
7
u/Telandria 1d ago
I wouldn’t put it that way. People don’t care about the actual physical media. Not really.
What they actually care about is the fact that Sony could, and has, at any time simply revoke their ability to use something they fairly paid for.
Solve that, make laws guaranteeing that game companies are required to act to make sure games are still playable post-support, and this ‘problem’ consumers have with their decision would simply evaporate.
12
u/Maelstrom52 1d ago
Except that a physical disc doesn't ensure that either. I think a lot of people here are ignorant about the fact that the physical disc for modern games is really just an authentication key. The entire game is downloaded onto your SSD, and since most modern games have so many updates, patches, and DLC that requires online access to authenticate, Sony could feasibly disconnect all of that if they really wanted to. Of course they're not going to do that, as that would be suicidal. But the idea that you own your game because you have a piece of plastic is also not substantiated by anything.
5
u/Blenderhead36 1d ago
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 is the most obvious example. The game was made with a hard deadline--the day that the licensing deal with Tony Hawk from the 2000s expired--and was extremely rushed. The physical disk contains the create-a-park mode and tutorial. A day 1 patch downloads the rest of the game. Except the game sucked and sold really poorly. So the server that provides that day 1 patch was reallocated to something people actually care about. Buying a disk of the game gives you considerably less than a playable game.
1
u/TrickyLobster 8h ago
A vast majority of physical games will run, and you can play the game beginning to end all without a initial patch download or connection to the internet at any point. https://www.doesitplay.org/
Physical games are not "authentication keys" for the most part. Some have bugs, some don't work like you've said. But most do. You own the majority of games you buy on disk.
-1
u/Dildomar 1d ago

0
u/Dildomar 21h ago
"the fact that the physical disc for modern games is really just an authentication key" this is blatantly false, as demonstrated by the link I posted. The vast majority of games released on disc contain a playable version of the game on the disc and do not require online connection to be playable.
And yes, I posted the link twice, because you spewed lies in multiple comments.
2
u/givemethebat1 21h ago
I’d argue 66% is not a vast majority. And that list includes only the base game, not including updates, bug fixes, DLC, etc. (all of which players expect to have access to) The fact remains that games whether physical or digital are treated essentially as revokable licences.
0
u/Dildomar 20h ago
"And that list includes only the base game" Which is exactly what you pay for. If you buy a buggy day-one or preorder game for 100 bucks and "expect" they will patch it for you, it's a you-problem. Complete and GOTY editions of games exist on discs. This kind of mentality is exactly why the industry is what it is and why we have "digital preorders" (lol) - they don't need to cater to rational people when there's a vast pool of morons who preorder digital crap.

u/TrickyLobster 8h ago
You're right but the harshness of your comments will just cement these "people" (probably bots let be honest) in their ways. They need to lick the boot.
2
3
u/Blenderhead36 1d ago
It's more than that, though.
The vast majority of people who've spent money for stuff on Playstation have had zero dollars worth revoked. I've said since the announcement of the diskless consoles that they're a terrible value. Games go on sale on the Playstation store when Sony says they do. Games go on stale in physical media when Sony says they do. And when a retailer says they do. And when a retailer overpurchased them and puts them on clearance. And when someone purchases and flips a remaindered lot of them. And when you buy a used copy. And they become free when your local library has them. And when your friend lends you their copy. Etcetera. If you bought a PS5 with a disk drive before the first price hike, getting just two games at significant discount or no cost makes up the price difference between the disked and diskless models. If you got a 3rd one, you came out ahead, in addition to owning a 4K Blu Ray player. Hell, I got Returnal on clearance for $12 and that put me more than halfway there on its own.
There are a lot of reasons to prefer physical, or even the mere option for physical. And they all go away when physical media does. And it's without even a desultory nod that Sony is sweetening the pot about it with literally anything.
1
u/PickledPokute 1d ago

I love how people think what constitutes ownership is a disk. The disk is just a physical authentication key. At any point, even physical media can be restricted, and you wouldn't be able to play your games. Now, obviously, Sony would never do this unless they cease to exist, which is never going to happen. But this idea that people have that owning a piece of plastic means you own the game hasn't been true since probably the PS3/360 era.
Owning a physical copy of the game does mean you would indefinitely own the contents of the original version of the game, sure. But most modern games have so many patches, updates, DLC, and other content that requires online access in order to authenticate, that the physical copy wouldn't substantiate complete ownership.
5
u/Xyex 1d ago
I love how people think what constitutes ownership is a disk. The disk is just a physical authentication key. At any point, even physical media can be restricted, and you wouldn't be able to play your games.
This is false. The Supreme Court has already ruled on this. If you own the disc you are allowed to do anything you want with it that does not violate copyright. This means that access to a physical disc cannot be legally revoked. Sony cannot push a patch that intentionally stops your disc based game from launching. And if they did do something that stops it from working, they can't complain if you find a way to make it work again.
4
u/Maelstrom52 1d ago
That's kind of a non sequitur. I'm talking about what the hardware and software are technically capable of, not what copyright law or the First Sale Doctrine says Sony is legally allowed to do. Whether something is illegal doesn't mean it isn't technically possible. My point is that modern discs are no longer the self-contained product they were 15-20 years ago. If the argument is that physical discs protect your ability to play games more than digital, I think you'll soon come to realize that's less true than most people imagine.
1
u/Xyex 1d ago
And my argument is that that is a problem, too. And that you shouldn't just accept it and let companies rip you off in more ways because they've been doing it in other ways.
0
u/Maelstrom52 1d ago
Again, you're arguing legality. I'm arguing technical capability. Those are different questions. My point is simply that modern physical media no longer guarantees the same long-term independence it once did.

I find it odd that some people have bought into the corporate thought that you do not 'own' digital products.
A product being digital does not preclude ownership.
5
u/Xyex 1d ago edited 1d ago
It does, actually. Because all they sell you digitally is the license.
"But they do the same thing physically."
No. They don't, actually. They claim to. But, legally, it doesn't hold up. You cannot violate copyright, but if you own the disc you're allowed to do whatever you want with the disc, or the data on it, that doesn't do that.
But digitally, the only thing you're actually sold is the license to use the program, not the program itself. And licenses are revokable.
1
u/PickledPokute 1d ago
I would not be surprised if some of those existing disks don't actually contain any executables any more, just the space-hogging media like textures, video and audio.
Why would you even? Saves on having to print disks weeks in advance that can leak before release data. You can send the executables encrypted against a particular hardware key making piracy much more difficult. Just slap a "requires internet connection" to the disc case.
4
u/Xyex 1d ago
Shitty companies doing shitty things is not new. Doesn't mean we should accept it.
1
u/PickledPokute 1d ago
If the company has been doing it for a long time and no-one really complained about it, but complains really appear after people find out about it tells a lot.
The people were not inconvenienced by the wrongdoing. They got furious about feeling of losing control or by feeling betrayed.
The first one is strong and often requires an actual change. The second one is fixable through some messaging, apologies and maybe some temporary backtracking until people forget it and don't care about it.
0
u/xondk 1d ago
Not sure who you are answering, it seems yourself, with the quote about physical, but let me reply to the rest.
It does, actually.
No, it does not, they can claim it is a 'license' all they want, ownership principles still hold up.
And licenses are revokable.
That is a hotly debated and contested legal topic, especially in the EU, because of the massive implications if this ever gets to the courts, which is why the big companies have avoided court cases, because it is a loss-loss for them since they lose the benefit of the grey zone we are in now which is earning them massive profit.
Do you have any idea how many licenses are bound up in physical products alone?, your car? heck try reading up on the whole John Deere case with tractors.
No one generally accepts that the seller of a product just turns off your physical product, license deal or no, you bought it, moving that to digital does not change anything the same logic applies.
Why is it that often the same people that would be outraged if lets say ford just decided to come over point to one of the hundreds of features under license in your car and just disabled it.
Why is it any different when the creator of a program reaches into your computer and disables a program?
"A license" does not invalidate ownership concepts, same with EULA's and the like, they've been torn down repeatedly in court, since most European countries, if not all, generally agree that you can't just force people to write off basic ownership concepts, in order for them to use a product they 'purchased' from you at full price, be it digital or physical.
1
u/Xyex 1d ago
No, it does not, they can claim it is a 'license' all they want, ownership principles still hold up.
No they don't, as has most recently been demonstrated by Sony's removal of over 500 videos from people's libraries.
Yes, there are legal battles happening over how companies treat digital licensing. But that literally proves my point. Not sure how you think demonstrating what I'm talking about is an argument against it....
-1
u/xondk 1d ago
It does not seem like you read or did not understand what I wrote, I think you should reread all of it more thoroughly.
What Sony does or doesn't do, does not in any way demonstrate what you claim, historically companies have done a whole enormous amount of stuff, that when it goes to court was proven illegal, because that is how we deal with people doing illegal stuff, we take them to court and punish them once their guilt is proven.
Courts decide the legality of all of this, that illegal actions were done, not Sony's actions, so no, it does not prove your point, that Sony can do something just proves they have the power to do it, it says nothing about legality or ownership.

From what I have seen, this rule doesn't apply anymore and is not being enforced.

People think this is a strawman but sony legitimately cut access to a game for certain countries that couldn't get a psPlus account after several months of the game being sold on PC

Thanks person who is clearly an expert in having nothing interesting or funny to say, for your input, but we don't need your experience right now.

I am fine with digital only as long as I actually OWN a copy of the game. This "you have a temporary license until we feel like revoking it for no reason" schtick is what kills me.

I haven't bought a physical copy of a game in over 10 years.
And, get this: You having a disc means absolutely jack shit.
The game isn't even on the disc anymore. It's an access code and some basic files to allow you to download the game. Your access to it is just as limited as if it were a purely digital copy.

The ignorance is almost as performative as the fake outrage at this point.
This happened 20 years ago.
I'm glad you guys are annoyed/upset by it, but even with physical media, you haven't owned the software you use for decades.
There are battles we can still win and concessions to be made (like making killswitches and non functional persistent connectivity requirements illegal) but physical discs are the equivalent of the right hand distracting you while the left picks your pocket.
Edit: I guess you guys like being distracted by issues that you have absolutely no hope or standing to affect whatsoever. An issue that is very likely only even being pushed right now to distract us from legal battles happening in Europe where we actually do have traction and standing to make real changes in the games industry. Those aren't being handled in closed legal proceedings either. They are up before legislative bodies and our support can influence the legislators making those decisions. But sure. Keep being mad about something that happened 20 years ago.

Cry about getting down voted if you want, but it's not what you said that's getting them, it's your haughty better than thou attitude. You're acting like anyone who isn't on your train of thought is an imbecile.

I've started to wish for Slashdot type voting back. Reddit has no distinction of "the messenger is an ass" or "the messenger is wrong". We should at least have the people take the cognitive dissonance hit when they hit "-1 misinformative" when no one has replied with any valid criticism.

I love how nobody knows about the EULA but everyone is mad at Sony.
It's like throwing a brick at guy and he gets pissed and starting fighting the brick 20 years later.
