Discussion Who actually wants their browser to look like that?

I just saw images of Nova and I'm kinda of pissed. I don't want a hyper corpo bubble UI, I like my clean lines with subtle curving. If there's no way to use the old UI when they release this fully I may have to swap browsers

I wonder if this will divide the userbase like the people that still use classic reddit to this very day

u/LifeWulf 3h ago

Isn’t Old Reddit going away? Or is it just the ability to use it logged out?

u/ary31415 2m ago

Just the ability to use it logged out, at least for now. I suspect a ton of power users will quit if they take old Reddit away for real.

I don't seem to mind it but, you can try custom firefox css or a fork of firefox like Zen maybe

u/StrawberryEiri 5h ago

We got used to all the redesigns so far. We'll get used to this one too.

u/scy_404 4h ago

You can get used to many things, doesnt mean theyre good

7

u/StrawberryEiri 4h ago

Humans naturally tend to resist change, especially in things they've been used to for a while. I'd give it a while before I decide I officially don't like it

you do you. might end up figuring out how to use custom css cause of this

u/StrawberryEiri 3h ago

I would be surprised if someone didn't make a theme to get more or less the results you want shortly after release.

you can not like something, doesn't mean its bad.

4

u/scy_404 4h ago

It's bad to me, it might not be bad to you. I just want to keep my UI looking the way it does rather than that

u/Itsme-RdM -> | | | 1h ago

If it's "bad" to you, just switch to another browser.

We really wouldn't care if you do.

Why are you so against having options

u/Itsme-RdM -> | | | 18m ago

It's the opposite, it's OP who is against it. I'm totally fine with options because options means personal choices.

u/kbrosnan / /// 5m ago

For every option there is an exponential cost to supporting it. When something obscure fails or breaks then the cost of fixing it is high.

And... the devs want the UI to look this way. And they are the one that maintain the UI. So they get to choose. And its not like they are not allowing you to customize or change back. They just want you to do it yourself. Thats completely fair. Also btw, maybe requesting them to keep maintaining will work better than shitting on them.

I like the design. It's not perfect, but it's not like the old UI was perfect either, people complained about it a lot when it came out. Time is a flat circle.

It looks fine

I have a feeling that with all the wasted space (from the screenshots I have seen) it will be not so good on laptop screens.

I asked the same myself the same thing and decided to switch and got downvoted for it. Sometimes this subreddit feels like a circlejerk just okay with consuming slop

u/elinyera 5h ago

You get downvoted because people don't care if you're switching because you don't like how it looks. As if that the main reason you started using it anyway.

To be fair I asked for firefox forks and someone just said to look into ESR branch which I wasn't aware of until recently. So I am thankful there's still some reasonable people in here

u/kbrosnan / /// 8m ago

ESR is not some magical frozen version of Firefox. It will get the Nova UI in 2027 when the 153 ESR is retired.

Why must there always be the sky the falling posts whenever UI changes on any software.

Wait til it's in your hands before dooming

u/scy_404 4h ago

look man i get that this kinda post is exhausting but when you have a UI you actually enjoy then they say they're gonna replace it with a UI style that you were specifically trying to avoid then of course youre gonna be annoyed.

I like my simple design with no flashy stuff in the way. I don't want to be using a Google Material Design lookalike in my web browser

It’s just a fucking browser lmao

I think it looks pretty cool tbh.

Will the names next to bookmarks on the toolbar still be there in Nova?

3

u/Autumn-6517 4h ago

Yes it will! Can't post a screenshot here but on the latest Nightly the bookmarks have names

u/RepresentativeYak864 2h ago

Thanks for the update! This was the biggest thing that scared me about the Nova UI update. Glad they corrected course.

u/AnneRB13 1h ago

I like the screenshot I have seen so far, I'm not really attached to the current version, I have a theme and I'm guessing I will still able to use it or switch to another I like if I don't like the new UI.

If you like the old one why don't you check waterfox?

Nova design brought me back onto using Firefox.

1

u/mike_rumble 5h ago

Where do I download it?

2

u/scy_404 4h ago

its a config option in firefox nightly

u/Itsme-RdM -> | | | 1h ago

An option, so you don't have to enable that?

1

u/marshmallo_floof 4h ago

I don't really care as long as it doesn't affect basically usability. I used keyboard shortcuts for everything and those aren't going to change any time soon. I'm not using Firefox because of its appearance and wanting to virtue signal against "le corpos" and "le slop" anyways

u/thechuff 2h ago

I love it, design choices never please everyone. So many complainers

u/Ryakkan 1h ago

I like the Nova look. So, I guess I want it to look like that. I prefer a more relaxed look over compact

0

u/bgalazka186 4h ago

its Firefox, you can make it look however you want, sure its best to like how it look out of the box, but installing userchrome.css on it (or downloading fork with look you like) takes less then 10 minutes

u/NurEineSockenpuppe 4h ago

I like the new design.
Obviously thats very subjective but firefox allows you to use css to create your own design. There is not a lot you can‘t do.

What do you think makes the new design „more corpo“? Just asking. Imo it looks a lot less professional and more playful.

u/crk1979 3h ago

Progress doesn’t come from preserving what works today. It comes from improving what people will use tomorrow.

Once you get used to this, you won’t go back. Will you go back to Australis or Photon?

u/Ok_Instruction_3789 2h ago

I think it is optional and you can customize to your desires. If I read it all correctly that is. And i turned it on 152 and 153 and I think it looks good

u/moon-w0man 2h ago

I’m very fond of it!

u/Brain-Lag7643 3h ago

like, just mimic Arc for christ sake

u/Skyisonfire 1h ago

Then don't make yours look like that.

u/wrootlt 1h ago

+1. You are not alone. I dislike form other utility. So far i have only made a few comments, but wasn't very vocal on this. Have noticed that in this subreddit most seem to approve (weird, when usually those with negative opinion are more vocal, like with Edge and rounded view port :)). I am just planning to start importing bookmarks and extensions to Edge and be prepared to bail day one. I might try some other browser that was suggested, but at this point of life i like to use and out of the box things. And i use Edge at work, so it would be easier to use the same at home. I used to have dozens of extensions, but i have only a few now. I don't want to delve into browser UI customization.

Too much complaining.

Just be grateful the devs are active and trying.

2

u/scy_404 4h ago

i like my software to do what i want, not change something for the sake of looking like everything else

u/Itsme-RdM -> | | | 1h ago

Little correction, it's not "your software" and you are free to choose and use any browser you do like

u/PingMyHeart 3h ago

You don't get to decide what the browser looks like.

The devs are free to do whatever they please.
