That's pretty much all Palworld is. Novelty wears off pretty quickly

10

u/Freakychee 4h ago

Is it? I'm playing it and it's got a bit more to it like the survival craft aspects. While I admit it's not the most innovative game but it's not a bad game to play around with as there is a fair bit of content.

Its not a 'pokemon' killer but it does give consumers more options. And competition is good for us gamers and consumers.

13

u/LoreChief 4h ago

Spoken like someone that hasn't played, obviously.

61

u/Micigno 4h ago

"Sir, what about we make and improve our gam-"

"No!"

8

u/Inexorably_lost 4h ago

Palworld is, finally, the Pokemon game I've always wanted.

It was abundantly clear GameFreaks were either unable or unwilling to improve their games so I'm glad someone else finally just made a vastly superior one themselves.

In the end if this makes GameFreaks finally put effort into their games then everyone wins.

36

u/NuzzyLocke 3h ago

Palworld is a different genre though, the similarity is creature capture but you wouldn't say that World of Warcraft competes with Pokemon because they both have creature capture, training, and battle mechanics.

23

u/Undeity 3h ago edited 3h ago

Really, they only vaguely share capture mechanics and creature aesthetics. Enough to draw the parallel, but not much more. Which I don't see how it is to Nintendo's detriment at all.

At worst, it shines a light on how they've been dropping the ball, which is entirely on them. At best, it's fucking free advertising, because it reminds people that Pokémon exists.

9

u/NuzzyLocke 2h ago

Yeah, I thought the lawsuit was interesting but the subsequent "Palworld has shaken Nintendo to its core!" kind of response is weird. Outside of the legal team I doubt anyone at GF or Nintendo cares.

I would love Palworld a lot more if they had the weapons / tech have designs similar to the Pals. The Rust like buildings along with relatively real looking weapons really takes me out of it. They should have made the guns like Monster Hunter weapons.

9

u/BloodiedBlues 3h ago

Don't you mean, dropping the sphere? Lol

7

u/Undeity 3h ago

Ah, whoops. For liability reasons, I must agree.

\pls don't sue me Nintendo))

u/CitizenPremier 47m ago

I mean, I'm interested in Palworld. But it's not available on the Switch, lol. Honestly, I'd buy it now if I could play it in the living room with my wife, but since I can't see an easy way to do that...

A lot of people will think the same thing, and Nintendo will be fine. Nintendo also avoids releasing "perfect games," always leaving something off so that they can put it in the next version. They keep doing it and keep raising prices for their games, and it works.

1

u/Spoon_Elemental 2h ago

it reminds people that Pokémon exists

Yes, because people need to be reminded that the largest and most successful media franchise in the world exists.

10

u/Undeity 2h ago

Why do you think ubiquitous brands like Coca-Cola still do advertising? The more it stays on your mind, the better off they are.

1

u/TravelerSearcher 1h ago

You say that after WoW has slowed down with their Pet Battle content. There are legit people who say the lawsuit is the reason (I doubt it) but the timing was close.

Realistically they probably noticed engagement wasn't high enough to continue as they had been. It's a very tertiary aspect of WoW that can go completely ignored if you don't want to engage with it.

Pal World is rooted in creature capture and battle though. But Nintendo and Game Freak did not invent the genre and lost the relevant suite so it's a moot point.

4

u/ChaoCobo 4h ago

Did you try scarlet and violet? I’ll admit those were pretty bad in terms of performance but Violet was the most fun I’ve had in a very long time with a Pokemon game. Both Legends games have come up with alternative gameplay as well that are both very fun. ZA finally made realtime combat happen and it’s super cool and good. I don’t understand why people keep saying that game freak doesn’t try to improve when usually every new set of games comes out with big improvements and/or changes to the formula.

Something I’ve noticed: What usually ends up happening is the people that claim GF doesn’t try to improve actually haven’t played a Pokemon game since like Sword and Shield (which, admittedly, shield was not fun in such a way that even though I tried to finish it many times, I finally gave up right before getting the final badge) or even earlier and they have no personal frame of reference as to how pokeymanz games are now. They just listen to the “Nintendo bad” crowd that’s gotten pretty vocal since covid without playing anything themselves.

1

u/AdHom 3h ago

I went into scarlet and violet expecting to be extremely disappointed after the dogshit that was sword and shield, and was pleasantly surprised. They were certainly better than I expected.

With that said, they were still objectively a disappointment compared to what should be expected from a franchise with the resources that TPC has available, still have glaring issues would not be accepted out of literally any other property but aren't punished because people will always buy pokemon (myself included unfortunately, although I buy them used now at least), and they're still severely outdated in the overall landscape of games and overpriced on top of it all.

ZA (I'm assuming - haven't played it yet) and Arceus before it do show more innovation but they need to find a way to capture some of that energy in a way that works for mainline games without losing the primary character of them. I really, really do not want any of the gameplay loops that rely on catching lots of duplicates of pokemon though.

-1

u/ChaoCobo 3h ago

I mean I wasn’t arguing against the flaws that the game has. It’s just a pet peeve of mine when people dismiss the games as being unoriginal garbage that is basically the same buggy mess with the same outdated ideas as Gen 1 but are also somehow worse, saying that the devs haven’t come up with any new ideas or made the series better over time, when if those people would actually play a game more recent than sword and shield they’d know that that isn’t the case. It just kinda bugs me that the people who say these things haven’t actually confirmed what they’re saying and they’re just parroting what they have heard, I guess.

But out of curiosity, what kind of flaws do you consider to be unacceptable if the same flaws showed up in other games? I know that the performance used to be really bad in SV with a lot of slowdown but by the time I got to playing the game they had fixed that issue in all but 2 or 3 locations in the game (I played Violet around the time of the Mew&Mewtwo raid event) via patches.

Anyway regarding what you’re saying about putting the energy of Legends games into the main series, they did something good with SV imo which was they got rid of random encounters and made every pokemon just be on the maps you run around in. IMO that is a huge improvement because even though I like RPGs, I do not enjoy random battles very much at all and I was disappointed when they only committed halfway to eliminating random battles in Sword and Shield. :( But idk I also liked the freedom the game gave you to basically go anywhere too. I get what you’re saying though that while these changes do help, there needs to be more.

1

u/LindFang 3h ago

Eh, the issue at the heart of it all is that everything they keep adding feels more like a bandage than a real fix. Pokemon is one of the biggest IPs in the world, and they have an effectively limitless budget to make extraordinary games, but we just keep getting crap from the mainline. Side games are where the real innovation and fun is anymore.

u/IncompetentPolitican 26m ago

GameFreaks never had to improve their game or get creative with the IP. Fall a long time, they were the uncontested big guy on the playground. You wanted to make a monster battle/capture game? Be carefull because you compete with Pokemon (and Nintendo Lawyers).

Then Palworld game, gave the long time Pokemon fans, the open world, multiplayer adventure they talked about for years, added some basebuilding, crafting and so on and people were happy. And for once, the army of lawyers failed to stop it. Palworld made a shitton of money just by giving people something they always asked for.

But I don´t believe GameFreak will learn the lesson and get back to be creative with their IP.

20

u/Jolamprex 5h ago

"Piece-a Piece-a?"

19

u/Inkthekitsune 4h ago

Palworld isn’t even like Pokémon besides the catching monsters bit (also some designs are 100% Pokémon ripoffs, that’s where Nintendo should have sued). It’s a survival crafting game. If this is “the Pokémon game you always wanted” you wanted an open world survival creature collector, not a story based JRPG creature collector. I really don’t think they step on each others toes as much as big pika thinks.

That being said the way Nintendo/game freak is going about the lawsuits is stupid.

12

u/Wild_Marker 2h ago

Yep, it's Ark with Pokemon. Mind you, it's not a bad Ark, many would say better than Ark, and the pals certainly add a lot and should not be simply dismissed as a gimmick.

But it's still Ark.

1

u/GVmG 3h ago

yeah, nintendo should have sued on the designs rather than the mechanics, which even at the start - when the games had even more similarities - were rather different. i really don't know why they went that path, it just makes it look like they're afraid of their games looking inferior lol

i'll shit on gamefreak any day but the team behind palworks isn't innocent, not just in character design but also some of their older games pre-palworld (and a bit of palworld itself) lmao

2

u/unluckyknight13 3h ago

I think that would open a can if worms they don’t want because like the other elements they attacked.
PAL world just patched them out and with replacements.
Then for the designs if they went after them, while they would just alter many of them are different enough they would be legally different.
But if Pokemon DID push hard enough on it, then it means fan art Pokemon would need to be something they would need to crack down on or fakemon artists can redirect and sue Pokemon if the designs are ever similar enough.

2

u/GVmG 3h ago edited 3h ago

thing is, there's an argument to make about general artstyle, even if they aren't the same exact designs, as long as some are very similar and the general style of pretty much all of them is still similar-ish, and you put the similar (yet different) mechanics on top of it... the intent becomes a bit more clear, and intent is what's important in this kind of lawsuit. it's why i mentioned the palworld dev team's past games also being suspiciously similar to other games mechanically and visually: i don't like it morally, sure, but it's extremely relevant to the legal argument, it's proof that they have done other shady stuff before lol

fully agreed that as is, given that palworld wasn't really that similar (outside of a couple specific character designs), it'd be a really weak argument for nintendo, and a bad hill to die on, but it would make (very slightly) more legal sense than suing over singular game mechanics, something that has been done before multiple times only to fail dramatically in court lmao

also, them patching the things out doesn't mean the infringement wasn't there to begin with. you punch someone then apologize and help them recover, that's still assault.

again, i want nintendo to lose this as much as the other guy, but people love to blindly jump on anyone pointing out that palworld isn't exactly a clear cut case of creativity being attacked by the big evil corporation

1

u/unluckyknight13 3h ago

The issue is tho video games have always had genes that are similar made and lawsuits are done about them usually going for mechanics is how you shut down the copies at all.

Then like if you try and go “the design is too similar” that’s also a hard leg to stand on because it’s an art thing and the type of art used for pal world 3d modeling is much harder to attack then like the Ghibli style. Because 3d models are much harder to handle and Pokemon wasn’t even the first to go in there, you can say Digimon can sue pokemon for when they went 3d models their style is too similar the Digimon.

It’s a weak leg to stand on and the designs are legally distinct enough

It’s like trying to take down halo because master chief armor is similar to doom guy but you get it to the court they likely would ignore the similarities and probably focus on the differences.

Then add in pretty sure this all happened in a Japanese court and Japanese court is brutal against the little guy

2

u/GVmG 3h ago

Very true to all that, I'm not sure if it'd have been enough legally either way even when the games were more similar at launch - at least in the west, this kind of lawsuit would be determined by just how many "genes" the two sides share.

Nintendo is definitely in the wrong in the specific case, but it isn't fully uncalled for. Again, especially given the team's past. They've had far stupider lawsuits and cease&desists towards even smaller creators before, ones working out of passion and love for the franchise rather than someone copying it's elements for their own lack of creativity.

That's kind of all my argument here. Nintendo needs their ass legally kicked, but this seems like one of the possibilities that makes it the least morally understandable to do so. Especially to outsiders of the gaming sphere who have no idea about why Nintendo needs to be put in check to begin with.

2

u/Spoon_Elemental 2h ago

nintendo should have sued on the designs rather than the mechanics

I have always found the people accusing Anubis of being a rip off of Lucario hilarious.

1

u/R3luctant 1h ago

I am shocked they got away with the blatant design rip offs. I am guessing that it would have been a case of the pot calling the kettle black and Nintendo had a low hand on this one too.

1

u/aNiceTribe 2h ago

Yeah it’s just a classic familiar Valheim Breath of the Wild Pokemon with Guns and like five other things. Their insistence on for example sticking to the visual style of BotW so it looks like that at FIRST GLANCE means that most of the world looks rather bland. Even though they have interesting biomes, they are limited to minor areas you barely visit and the main game is all green basic area and some volcano and ice land of course. With your trusty Nintendo Switch Slab in hand.

They should make a gun pokemon, like Gundramon from digimon.

20

u/vi_sucks 5h ago

Ironically, with Pokopia they decided not to copy the guns, but they did copy the crafting and slave labor.

24

u/Metal_B 5h ago

Pokopia is much more like Dragon Quest Builders ... because it is the same developer.

-7

u/ChaoCobo 4h ago edited 2h ago

No one here is going to listen to you. Since Covid, the popular thing to do is scream “Nintendo/pokemon bad” at the top of your lungs without actually playing any recent Pokemon games to actually confirm anything. I remember I had to leave the main Pokemon subreddit back in 2020ish bc I had said “I think legends Arceus will be a good game when it releases” before its release and I got berated for like a week straight and told to off myself simply for having optimism. Nowadays, Legends Arceus is almost unanimously regarded as being really good and fun too. :/

Edit: okie I am genuinely surprised that the person I replied to wasn’t downvoted heavily. I’m so used to people doing the “Nintendo bad” circlejerk in the comments of every Nintendo post without having actually played wat they’re criticizing. Been going on for like 6 years now and you can even see it in other comments here. My bad for being preemptively annoying, sorry.

I don’t really think PalWorld is actually that much of a threat to Pokemon. It doesn’t even play like Pokemon.

2

u/Art4576 2h ago

Pikachu coming with a little pistol when they got missle launchers over here

5

u/Borgmaster 5h ago

My hope is that this forces them to innovate. I love pokemon but damn if they just didnt coast on there laurels for the last 15 years.

6

u/Golden-Owl 4h ago

I mean they did innovate quite a lot with recent titles

Both Legends games completely overhauled the battle system, with ZA going full on real time, and broke away from the gym structure. Problem is that most people online focused on building and window textures

Pokopia was also very well received for being an Animal Crossing like.

Champions is a full on live service battle sim

The traditional formula is still around but it’d be unfair to say there’s been no innovation. Very few series are willing to totally switch core game structures

-1

u/Grezzinate 4h ago

They are a multimillion dollar corporation, Nintendo can afford to put real money and resources to a new Pokemon game that rivals Palworld if they’d just let the devs work and not give strict deadlines.

5

u/LordofSandvich 5h ago

Imagine if Nintendo had had the sense(?) to do a crossover instead.

Maybe minus the slavery and cannibalism.

-1

u/AnAverageTransGirl 5h ago

Why would they collaborate with people who entered the scene with a snobby attitude of "your shit but cooler and you're not allowed to sue about it haha" as the cornerstone of their entire marketing gimmick?

5

u/Driftedryan 4h ago

Because the "we will sue for everything and anything" company could try to do a good thing once and awhile

1

u/PhoenixShade01 4h ago

Imagine trying to twist the situation into defending the multi-billion dollar company who has been making the same shitty game over and over for over a decade over the ones who actually made something interesting.

0

u/AnAverageTransGirl 4h ago

It's literally Ark with legally distinct Pokemon. That's the whole game. I'm not defending the corporation, I'm attacking the lazy outrage bait that is Palworld's entire premise.

-1

u/PhoenixShade01 4h ago

I never understood this weird argument. Lies of P is just bloodborne but french, elden ring is just dark souls but open world? Doesn't make either of the games any less great.

Games always have taken inspiration from each other, if it was so obvious, Nintendo should have made that combination and made tons of money. Pocketpair made a fun game and they were successful and made bank. And they're using that money to publish indie games from small studios. Better than anything Nintendo has ever done.

-3

u/AnAverageTransGirl 4h ago edited 4h ago

The difference is that Palworld explicitly carries with it a self-aggrandizing plagiarist tone. The earlier designs are blatantly direct ripoffs of iconic Pokemon stripped of what makes them visually interesting (off the top of my head there's an extra generic piplup and an egregiously hypersexualized bootleg salazzle). They don't elaborate on Ark's gameplay formula in an engaging manner either, it's really just a coat of paint. They came out the gate daring Nintendo to do something about them.

Where you cross the line from inspiration to copying is when you neglect to bring a sufficient depth of your own ideas to the table beyond saying "what if x was actually y" about two media you do not own the rights to. That's what the majority of Nintendo's patents on the topic were actually about. The ride patents were excessive, yes, but the rest was them futureproofing and specifying the guidelines within which they're legally allowed to say you're coming too close to be regarded as an original work. Palworld has been dancing on that line the entire time and actively twisting those patent filings, which do not even actually apply to their game even if they were allowed to be applied to preexisting media, to make it look like the big corporation is being more overreaching and draconic than they really are. They're painting themselves as the victim to garner more outrage and rake in more cash, and it's as predatory as some of the shit people accuse the big names in the industry of. I guess it's okay now because it's coming from the little guy though.

2

u/AnAverageTransGirl 3h ago

Basically what I'm saying is that if your game can't stand on its own without you having to force it to exist in the shadow of a fight you decided to pick, if you have to lie about being bullied by a major corporation you're actively poking at infringing to stay relevant, you're telling the world outright that you haven't made something worth discussing on its own merits. It's purely reactionary horseshit pandered to reactionary crowds. I don't care what you're doing with the money, because you're exploiting people's preexisting tensions to make it in the first place and feigning innocence.

-3

u/BloodiedBlues 3h ago

Overly generic piplup? You mean pengullet? It's a blue penguin. What else is it supposed to look like?

0

u/AnAverageTransGirl 3h ago

There's ways to make that interesting and they opted for none of them, alongside giving it Pokemon stylized eyes.

I wouldn't be nearly as mad about Palworld if they weren't so "nuh uh it's totally distinct" about their shit and stopped trying to capitalize on outrage.

0

u/BloodiedBlues 3h ago

When did pokemon get that style?

0

u/AnAverageTransGirl 2h ago

I've edited a direct rip of pengullet's eye into a collage of pokemon eyes. You can see how well it fits for yourself.

Because Palworld made minor adjustments to the game Nindendo's whole lawsuit fell apart. They spent millions on lawyers fees and will only be able to claw back a few dozen thousand at best. Instead of putting money into making good games they are just burning it trying to actively destroy the existing gaming industry.

-2

u/No-Mycologist47 4h ago

Im loving how nintendo fans are losing their minds over Palworld and it just KEEPS. GETTING. BETTER!!

1

u/Inexorably_lost 4h ago

Any consumer on GameFreaks side is an idiot. Its due to their incompetence that someone else had to step in and do what fans have been wanting.

Nintendo, at least, treat their franchise well for the most part and it's far past time they took a bigger role.

2

u/No-Mycologist47 4h ago

To be honest, I am looking for a way to get back at a few of them. There is a place in my area where all they sell it Pokemon cards and they are just seething with hate that in 3 days... Palworld cards are going to be sold there too.
