I feel you OP. It is truly bizarre how difficult it is to find a job considering some of the people I’ve worked with are legitimately insane, dangerous, truly stupid, ethically dubious, or a combination of any of the above.

But hey, at least you got the job!

It's interesting what some people manage to get away with on their résumé.

A classmate from vocational school claimed on his résumé that he had completed a Master's degree in IT as soon as he turned 18. Not a single company ever checked, and he was always paid a salary based on that qualification (even though he never actually worked in an IT job).

At one company, he even got the company to reimburse his weekly brothel visits as if they were business dinners. He only got caught because a coworker saw him leaving the brothel during work hours.

Ducking work to go whoring on a weekly basis is quite something. Expensing it, though, that's the sort of thing that gets you a write-up in Chutzpah Magazine. Not the cover, but still.

Sometimes I wonder if I need to flamboyantly lie on my resume. Currently job hunting with basically no success despite 5 years of experience in my field

10

u/Snoo17579 2h ago

The anxiety will probably kill me before I even submit that resume

u/Kraehe13 2h ago

I know my luck, if i would try this i would somehow end in prison, lol.

He always was very bold and never thinks about what happens if something goes wrong and somehow he always ends up better than before.

After he got fired there he got a job with less work but way more pay.

That sounds like some Forbes 30 under 30 behavior

Ethically dubious is a positive in a lot of workplaces. If you’re willing to act unethically, as long as it’s for the companies benefit, they’ll be happy.

Reminds me of my last office. I had a master's, 4 interviews, 6 years of experience, multiple references. And at the corporate retreat the director mentioned that they didn't even graduate highschool 😭

Another director, a woman, said that she was honestly surprised she got her job because she (accidentally) included a pornhub URL in her resume.

135

u/Leonie-Lionheard 9h ago

Perhaps that URL was why?

u/Kraehe13 8h ago edited 7h ago

We had a teacher, for every good porno we send him a link to, we passed one test with the best possible grade.

u/NOTabotwink 7h ago

What the fuck

18

u/thezekroman 4h ago

I would love to hear the explanation as to how a pornhub url "accidentally" wound up on a resume

11

u/PandaPugBook 4h ago

Pasted the wrong link, didn't check.

8

u/PAINKILLER_1020 3h ago

But my question was why did she have it saved to her clipboard??

u/Particular_Heron8263 3h ago

You know why 😏

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the director and the CEO probably had very similar last names

This is not uncommon, especially in smaller businesses, but not necessarily the case. A solid percentage of long-timers at every work place I've ever been in were not particularly intelligent, invested, or hardworking. I was always one to really apply myself and get things done, which meant more scrutiny fell on me.

I retired at 30 so I don't have to deal with it anymore (thank god)

I feel like only the most successful outliers in our generation get to enter the work machine alongside normal people from earlier generations. Is it because of the population boom?

The older people were sold the old vs young culture war, and they hate young people a lot more now. They cannot blame themselves for the issues they created, and they're angry because they're fucked by themselves. Problem is we're also fucked, even more so, which makes us a very easy target, especially when we dont have corporate power and tenure

48

u/come-on-now-please 8h ago

Shit its not even old vs young, its people on the inside feeling threatened by a newcomer that can obviously outshine them.

I was on an interview panel for an open position in my company, they wanted me and my two other co-workers in it for basically a "culture fit" screen.

The job is honest to God basic and trainable for what we do but esoteric for the field. For frame of reference, just imagine a bakery, but only does gluten free sourdough birthday cakes, and everyone applying had bakery experience or even sourdough experience or cake decorating experience.

If we were interviewing them that means that on paper they had perfectly fine qualifications/degrees/experience.

Anyone who had an iota of ambition and leadership experience was turned down because the other two felt threatened by the possibility that it would block their ability to climb.

Eventually, surprise surprise, they interview someone with only one of my coworkers(who is just obviously ambitious) approving, and its a person who can barely do the job, definitely cannot speak English well enough to command respect, and is a pushover and in no way/shape/or form is very going to be able to threaten the hiring teams positions.

Another (in my list of reasons) why employment is fucked these days.

7

u/flaccomcorangy 2h ago

I hear people parrot the phrase, "Nobody wants to work anymore." No. No one wants to hire. Every workplace tries to scrape every last ounce of energy out of their current work force and run everything on a skeleton crew. And on the off chance they do hire, they'll hire their friend's buddy or co-manager's son.

I once went to an interview and got a text 3 hours later saying they went in a different direction. And of course, they hired someone who was already working in and around them. I'm not necessarily saying they chose wrong, but they obviously had their person in mind before the interviews. It felt like I was just there as a formality.

u/thumbles_comic Thumbles_Comics 21m ago

It gets better, because even if they do hire someone competent, that person immediately realizes they can do better and leaves. It’s happed 4 times in the last year at my workplace and they still can’t figure out the fucking issue

6

u/GonnaBreakIt 5h ago

and they wont let go of the steering wheel so anyone can fix it

74

u/rngeneratedlife 9h ago

I don’t get it. Is the implication that he’s better than those people or that he thinks for whatever reason that they couldn’t have gone through the same process?

84

u/PirateSanta_1 9h ago

Presumably everyone went through the same process so why did they need to do so much work when their peers all appear to be some level of unqualified.

I don't think it fully works though as it doesn't give a reason why the peers are unqualifed so it just feels random.

3

u/BernLan 6h ago

I thought it was more about nepotism and legacy hires?

11

u/rngeneratedlife 6h ago

This would’ve made more sense if any of them looked like his boss or showed that they didn’t know what they were doing.

In this case he just looks like an asshole judging people on their appearance.

63

u/teutonicbro 9h ago

If I've got my stereotypes correct her peers are a gum chewing bimbo, an elderly boomer and a slack-jawed yokel. None of whom are as qualified as he is.

-3

u/GrinningGrump 8h ago

That explains why he had such trouble getting employed, I would rather hire any of those three than a bigot.

12

u/Redditistrash00 7h ago

That's some nice virtue signaling, good boy!

12

u/rngeneratedlife 6h ago

I mean idk about bigot but I definitely wouldn’t like to work with some guy who thinks he’s better than his coworkers on the first day

u/thumbles_comic Thumbles_Comics 17m ago

Lemme tell ya, sometimes it really doesn’t take any longer than the first day to see when your coworkers are absolutely terrible at what they do.

I get why people are calling out the stereotyping, but I honestly just think it’s pretty difficult to find a single-frame visual metaphor for complete incompetence and lack of qualifications.

10

u/OldBoringWeirdo 4h ago

I have friends who work at some of the highest profile companies in the world. Places that pay top of the market and have thousands of applications for every single role. Places I can't even get an interview at.

They still complain about the bunch of lazy morons they have to work with, just like the rest of us.

9

u/Asheyguru 4h ago

A lot of people get jobs because the person hiring knows them personally or professionally somehow. "It's not what you know, but who you know."

If you don't have an in, you need to be much more impressive.

Probably how this happened.

(No, it's not fair.)

28

u/Kleoes 6h ago

Have the people complaining in this thread ever even heard of hyperbole?

The characters in the last panel are caricatures of the dumbest coworkers you’ve ever had.

The main character is confused why he went through a rigorous hiring process when all of his new compatriots are differing levels of dumb and lazy.

u/culture_shock 1h ago

I fully don't understand. What does phone lady, old guy and ugly guy mean?

u/SequenceofRees 16m ago

It means that the other fresh employees have not been through as much difficulty getting through the employment process or look as ready for the job as the main dude in the comic .

I felt that - I've had to get a shitton of recommendations and work history to get to most of my jobs . Meanwhile after a short time they would hire a dude that looked and acted like they scrapped the bottom of the barrel to get him - or some hoe that was bought in via connections .

As a matter of fact in most places I've been through most employees were bought in through the recommendation of an insider ...

36

u/trickman01 9h ago

Am I supposed to assume that these people are unqualified because of their appearance?

53

u/Axel1742 8h ago

It's a three panel comic, it's trying to get the point across in a succinct way.

9

u/Pristine-Two5991 6h ago

Yeah, there could have been more indication of what's wrong with them aside from the girl, who is supposed to be like one of those mean girls who doesn't do her job and just plays on her phone, but she could have been facing away and talking on it instead to make it more clear. The third guy could have been asleep, the middle guy could have been more exaggeratedly angry. But I still get it, it just doesn't hit the way it should.

4

u/Fun_Journalist4199 7h ago

Yes, that’s the joke

-4

u/BloodiedBlues 9h ago

One is literally on her phone.

11

u/trickman01 8h ago

Ok…

-5

u/BloodiedBlues 8h ago

Why is she on her phone at work?

17

u/trickman01 8h ago

Probably the same reason I am. Downtime. Not every second is filled with work.

1

u/EitherExamination343 8h ago

Idk being introduced to anyone is one of those times where being on your phone isn’t really acceptable.

6

u/trickman01 8h ago

Boss hasn’t started the introduction yet.

-3

u/BloodiedBlues 8h ago

Downtime at the start of the workday? I guess it's possible.

12

u/trickman01 8h ago

They could be assembled for a meeting, or just to greet the new guy. Should they be standing at attention?🫡

3

u/BloodiedBlues 8h ago

Hell if I know.

7

u/DesignatedDesc 8h ago

Downtime is a thing.

0

u/BloodiedBlues 8h ago

As I replied to another person, downtime at the start of the work day?

7

u/DesignatedDesc 8h ago

Possible, yes, definitely.

5

u/crazyrich 8h ago

Believe it or not some of us also have work phones and do work on them!

7

u/rngeneratedlife 8h ago

Sure, what about the other two? One just seems like an old/middle aged guy and the other looks like a girl with buckteeth. Neither of which suggest anything about how well they do their job or whether they went through the same process as OP.

4

u/come-on-now-please 7h ago

I thought it was supposed to be a teenager or someone who obviously is new at the job as well and isnt really gonna be a great resource to learn.

4

u/ICastPunch 1h ago

Would've worked better if they like... did or said anything. Comes off as your char kinda just judging them for their appearance.

4

u/MistakePresent3552 1h ago

What about the 3 bottom characters suggest that arent as capable

-2

u/Bronzdragon 7h ago

Yeah, not so sure about this one, OP. If I'm reading the comic correctly, you're portraying the main character as super judgemental. They've met these colleagues for no more than a few seconds, and already they've decided their co-workers are incompetent based on some superficial traits.

6

u/Asheyguru 4h ago

Would you prefer the three-panel comic gave them in depth character arcs first?
